Dara & Karman's Hit List: "Favorite Co-eds" (Episode 1)Last May, when AfterEllen.com Editor-in-Chief Sarah Warn was shooting video of some of the AE vloggers waxing poetic about the women on the AE Hot 100 List, she grabbed my fellow writer/vlogger Dara Nai and me, stuck a fake guitar and drumsticks in our hands, and told us to opine about some of your favorite celebrities. We were reminiscing about this recently over a session of Rock Band, and decided that we needed a reason to do it all over again. Thus, Dara & Karman's Hit List was born. So each week, until we run out of random topics, Dara and I will sit down in front of the camera with our plastic instruments, fire up the lava lamps, and share with you lists of a few of our favorite things. These topics will include films, women, TV, women, music, women, or women.
In honor of the back-to-school season, our first episode is devoted to the most memorable co-eds from some of our favorite films and TV shows. Whether they wear plaid skirts, seduce their teachers, or pack some government-issued heat, we give all of the women on our list "A's" for effort. Dara & Karman's Hit List: Episode 1 "Favorite Co-eds"
The theme song is "Seven" by Vagiant — check them out at MySpace.com/vagiantboston — and of course, the awesome graphics were made by Kayla Jones. You can also hit us on our MySpace pages at MySpace.com/KarmanKregloe and MySpace.com/bad_machine. Let us know in the comments who you'd put on your list, as we believe in continuing our own education. AE reader Er1e has kindly transcribed the episode for our hearing impaired readers. OMG YES!
Captions, Subtitles, Please?
Captioning AE videos - someone needs to organize it
When this came up before, it sounded like people (including me) were willing to volunteer their time to create transcripts or captions, but somebody has to organize it to avoid having multiple people working on the same video.
It's becoming much easier to add captions to web videos. Here's how -
Create a captions file in Subtitle Workshop (freeware) or if a transcript already exists, use VisualSubSync to set the time markers. These create industry-standard files that can be used to add subtitles to videos by two methods.
1 - They can be attached to videos at websites such as YouTube, Google Video, Overstream, and dotSUB. Those last two are community-based websites in which multiple people can work on adding captions to the same video. Captioning is time-consuming, so ideally this is the best method, but there are probably legal barriers to using these free websites for an ad-based website like AfterEllen.
2 - They can be attached to the actual video file. The one I'm most familiar with is Auto Gordian Knot. It permanently burns the captions into the video (they can't be toggled off). Here is the best explanation of this method: An easier way to add subtitles to your videos. If you check the related links at the bottom of that post, he explains some other programs for adding captions.
..
Rest assured, Rainbowfish!
A Task Force (for the volunteer women deserve capital letters such as these) has been formed, and is in the process of transcribing numerous vlogs into written form. The comments posted about this problem have been noted. The sheer power needed, the resources that would have been needed for this to be a purely AE effort, with their backlog of vlogs that we all enjoy--well, I'm just glad so many motivated women have freely pledged time to this. As for this specific vlog, come back in a day or two and the transcript I just finished should be posted here. :)
If anyone else would be interested in volunteering to transcribe, even only a vlog or two, visit the organizational thread here for info: http://www.afterellen.com/node/37684

Speaking of Facts of Life
Jo was probably my first female celebrity crush (I just didn't know it at the time). I was a bit of a tomboy, and so I felt that I could relate to her character. Plus she was super hot.
:)
Oh, and for the "toothbrush" reference from Sugar Rush, watch this video around 0:25.

TOO FUNNY
Ok so i watched and have to say this was too funny. i was and am sorry to see WGN leaving but am so happy that i have a replacement. i had forgotten about Daria since its been so long since i have seen it but i loved that show. her friend Jane was great and they so reminded me of myself and my best friend when we were in school. :) you guys rock, keep up the greatness and can't wait for the next epi.
p/s i have to agree with Rainbowfish on seeing how captions/subtitles can be added. if anything, atleast some transcripts of the vlogs. though on a side not, not sure if a written transcript could do justice to Brunch with Bridget. That vlog is just too freaking awesome!!!! I love Bridget McManus.
We agree!
And we (a group of volunteers) are working on it. We ask for your patience, though, as it is a very time-intensive labor of love. To start with, transcripts will be written up. From there, we hope to transfer a number, if not all, of those to caption or subtitle form. Like I said, though, this will take time. The project was just thrown together this Saturday morning, after all! :)
If anyone would be interested in helping the AE Transcription Task Force, please visit the thread: http://www.afterellen.com/node/37684
Right on!
I was so going to miss you guys. Glad to see you guys will be on every week.Snowgirl41

Love you guys
This is awesome- so glad you are back. I'm still impressed with Dara's Godot reference from yesterday's WGN. Two days in a row- what a treat!

They're Grreat!
Is it the lava lamp, perhaps the mic stand with the scarf tied around it, or the drumsticks? I don't know but something about this show made Dara hot! Not to say that she wasn't before...maybe I've been semi comatose for a while.
"I stay away from high schools...20 feet now" Dara Nai
What happened with Jill?
You're reaching. Loads has
No wait. I take that
No wait.
I take that back. Something for sure has gone down.
the girls of sailor moon
were hot, smart/stupid, ass kicking chicks. i liked jupiter the best. she had the most lasbian potential...
i also loved Alex from degrassi, payton and brook from one tree hill, and Rory from gilmore girls... and currently, i find myself really liking the Silver girl on the new 90210. she has potential to be gay too... despite the fact that she just started dating her bestfriend's brother.
Yeah! How could I forget?!
Yeah! How could I forget?! Shame on me! :)
It was my favourite when I was a child. Though, I obviously wasn't aware of all subtexts. I've watched it again about three years ago and was astonished: how comlex this was. Haruka & Michiru were the best. And sooo gay :)
Weren't there a couple of
Totally agree with 'Mean
Totally agree with 'Mean Girls', 'Clueless' and 'Sugar Rush'. I can watch these over and over again. In fact I'm going to check this 'toothbrush episodes' right now. I remember at least two: 101 and 201, but I think there was also sth in the middle of the first season. I loved that show!
And I liked 'Popular', too. Both ended too fast.
BTW, great 'pilot': I'm already waiting for another episode.
Nice
Love.
Loved this blog! As a constant list maker.. really LOVED this concept. Whoop!
Hahaha! The Sugar Rush dental care issue is like the 1st scene of the whole thing pretty much. I loved "It's trash, you'd love it" ... It's so true. I love it because of this.
...
haha, nice list.. i must say.
wish i could add something but since i usually don't remember the names of the movies/shows & people that i've seen on the telly, it's not that easy to type something down.
anyway, this was a good episode. looking forward to the next one.
Weezy Jefferson?
Seriously, Karman, Weezy Jefferson!!!??? I almost choked on my drink! I truly was laughing out loud!
And the actress from Romy and Michelle is the great Elaine Hendrix. I am aquainted with her and she is not only an excellent actress, but a very talented and creative woman in general. She is also a tireless supporter of animal rights and a wonderful friend to the LGBT community.
Good to see you back in this new forum. I miss Jill Bennett though.
Ah, The Bitter Twins!
Cady Heron...
is also my favorite teen character... loved Lindsay since then.
Others I love are: Sam from Popular, Veronica from Veronica Mars, and I remember being complety in love with the girls from Freaks and Geeks, Lindsay Weir and Kim Kelly (Linda Cardellini and Busy Phillips) they were just awesome.
Great new vlog! Karman looks so hot on the graphic... hee
Yay!
Eliza Dusku in Bring It On, now that's my kind of co-ed. And Kirsten too, in those cheerleading uniforms. They slept in the same bed and I was slack-jawed with all the possibilities. Cheerleaders experimenting with each other? Please and thank you.
As for SON, I'd have to go with Ashley. It's hard for me to turn away from such a hot bitch with such a sultry voice. Mandy is gorgeous.
Other co-eds, let's see Veronica Mars for sure. I loved that girl, she'd definitely have been my crush in high school. And Mac too, she's just the kind of super nerd that I love.
"Arugula!" "Butter lettuce?!" You need a car horn that garners attention, not one that makes the driver look around confused because they think they heard a mouse.
And as for robots, Dara I would be one too. That would be so awesome, especially a Terminator-style robot. They are freakin' cool. Can't wait for next week's list!
___//♫♪ let your girlfriend do what your boyfriend can't

Finally, a show about lists!
LUCY DIAMOND
Lol, first of all, this new vlog ROCKS. And I looove how you mentioned D.E.B.S. which is the best movie on the planet, but you need to talk about Jordana Brewster in one of your upcoming vlogs. She was amazing as Lucy Diamond and I'm totally
obsesseda huge fan of hers. :P
