Dara & Karman's Hit List: "Best Lesbian Movies" (Episode 4)

Dara and I have seen a lot of lesbian movies in our time, and this week we'd like to offer you the opportunity to learn from our viewing mistakes.

Rather than smack-talk the movies that have left cinematic scars on our fragile psyches, in this Hit List we talk about some of our favorites.

Whether you like your lesbian movies tough (Stranger Inside), sweet (Imagine Me & You), or downright dour (High Art), there's plenty of quality films to choose from.

Watch as we discuss the importance of happy endings, two movies in the making that we think will be on our list in the future, and how a couple of dudes managed to make our favorite lesbian movie of all time.

Did we forget one? Tell us what's on your list!

The More You Know

I don't know why cleavage wouldn't make everything better.

"With extra batteries you can seduce anyone." Quotable quote. The feedback on that cowbell was a little harsh though. And if I wasn't already your friend on Facebook Dara I'd hit you up right about now. That was some nice cowbell.

Underworld with lesbians ... and better? Seriously going have to see this movie. And nipple sparks? Dara you are amazing.

Can't wait for next week.

Good point!

Gia is terrific--terribly sad but very moving and sexy (oh, to be that chain link fence...). High Art another movie to watch but...hello...Radha Mitchell (pant)? Patricia Clarkson as the smacked-out girlfriend? Not a wasted couple of hours...

This was the best episode so

This was the best episode so far! I loooveee you two and you definitely inspired me to watch some of the movies on your list that I haven't seen. Bound is definitely one of my faves as is If these walls could talk 2. Oh and Karman you have a brilliant laugh.
IfOnly's picture

Annabelle

The only lesbian movie I can watch over and over and over again is Loving Annabelle. Besides the story and characters, there's something about the colours and the lighting. And the music too! It's just beautiful!

i'm getting nowhere's picture

U two crack me up :-)

I love this vlog its so funny and informative at the same time, Dara always has the best one liners "watch it even thou its canadian" I lmfao at that plus the PSA's.I agree with most your list, Bound, loving Annabelle, debs, itwct2,imagine me and you.

Thou unless your putting them in your worst list, you forgot about "But im a cheerleader" such a great film cute and funny plus clea duvall is soooo fine in that film, and i dunno if "Monster" counts as a lesbian film but that probs deserves a mention, and also theres a cute little british film called "my summer of love" It stars emily blunt :-) its a bit weird and arty at times but quite good.

So thats all I would add. I havn't seen some of the ones on your list  but I will have to give them a go, all over me, dessert hearts and lost and delirious sound pretty good.I'm still trying to get hold of Freeway after you mentioned it last week :-p

Anyways great vlog as always :-)

Don't mess with my weave giiirrrrllll :)

I really didn't like

I really didn't like High Art. I looooved Loving Annabelle, although I thought it was a bit short, but that was because of the budget. And Desert Hearts... that's one of my all time favourites. And I'm not even from 'that' generation Gosh, that Helen Shaver was gorgeous in that film... Lost & Delirious I like, but is not one of my favs. Imagine Me & You is cute, always enjoyable to watch. Also, not one of my favorites, but I do like it. D.E.B.S. was cute too. Fire! I loooove Fire. Definitely one of my favs. All Over Me, did not like.I can never really explain why I like somethingor not, so that's all I'm going to say. Saving Face I liked. Go Fish my least favourite ever!! Two Girls In Love was alright. Bound was hot, liked it all right.

I'm not even going to start with all the lesbian movies I've seen. I think I must have seen 90% of them. Most of my favorites are non American though. Like films nobody has seen, haha! Low budget, but a good story.

Great lesbian movies

You two are great. Bound is my absolute favorite because of the production values, the acting and the storyline.

There are two others though that fit in for the same reasons: Aimee and Jaguar, you never actually know what Maria Shrader's character is doing, is she part of the resistance? And her performance is brilliant. Also, Mullholand Drive, though don't think that even David Lynch who directed is certain of what happend in the movie :)

The upcoming The World Unseen is quite good, though it could have been trimmed and edited better, but the acting of the three main characters was wonderful. Lisa Raye was wonderful in Water and is as well in this film.

Oh, and Kissing Jessica Stein was sweet...

marilyne's picture

listing

If these walls could talk 2 is one of my favorit, i keep watching it every now and than.

Bound is great aswell, i kept rewind a particular scene the first time i saw it... anyone else or what is just me? ;-)

And even if it's cheesy, i've got to say "better than chocolate": it's fun, entertaining and we get a happy ending!

one other kudo re: "Go Fish"

Great episode -- thanks!

One thing I really appreciated about Go Fish was that at the time it was released (early 90s), it was one of the first lesbian-themed films that was not a coming out story. Not that there's anything wrong with coming out stories per se, but it was so refreshing to have a film with characters who were out already and whose main plot was about finding a girlfriend, not about discovering a new facet of one's sexuality.

re: Bound, also one of my favorites -- part of the reason the sex scene was so hot was that the guys who made Bound had the smarts to hire a queer woman -- Susie Bright -- as a consultant. She helped choreograph that scene. Of course, Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly didn't hurt... :)

And okay, I'll let others take care of bashing Claire of the Moon, but the two good things about it were 1) the scenery along the Oregon coast, and 2) the scene of all the women dancing to what was then a brand-new Teresa Trull song!

Unfabulous's picture

Ouch

What's wrong with Canada?

Definitely some good movies though.

sleepylobster's picture

Canadian cinema

I think that Canadian cinema is wonderful... from  those I've seen, they don't go out for the big Hollywood bang, but for quieter, thoughtful, more acting oriented movies. With Atom Egoyan, David Cronenberg and Deepa Mehta (Earth, Fire, Water) as some of my very favorite directors, and Lisa Ray as the consumate expatriate Indian-Canadian, Only she and Mehta could have made Water such a beautiful film. She's also in The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight.

NO kidding. Thats what I am saying.. What's wrong with Canada.

BOUND... I agree in every shape and form. One of the best movies around..

The movies that made it to

The movies that made it to my list are Saving face & Imagine me and you. Two movies that I am looking forward to watching:

1. I can't think straight - Theatrical release in SF,LA, NY on Nov. 21st.

2. The World Unseen- Theatrical release in SF,LA, NY on Nov. 7th.

Karman, great to hear you mentioning about the movie FIRE. It is a sad movie but beauifully shot and well-acted.

Dara, did you get a chance to watch an 'American' made Indian movie - The Journey? If not, check it out.

Tiikeli's picture

About Loving Annabelle..

Have you guys seen the alternative ending, or should I say, the ending that was cut off and included in DVD extras? Sort of makes it a happier and less cautinary..

You can see it on YouTube, I'd recommend checking it out.

You guys definitely picked the best ones...some of which I now really want to rewatch.

Dara, it was scary how much I agreed with most of the things you said this episode...

If These Walls Could Talk2

I agree great movie, but I would have thought Karmen and Dara would have known that Brandon in Boys Don't Cry is a Pre-Op FTM TG and not a butch lesbian.Amy in ITWCT 2 is a butch lesbian and not TG.It just peeves me off that people don't get the difference between a butch lesbian and a FTM TG-one's a guy and ones a girl.Boys Don't Cry is not a lesbian movie, and Chloe Sevigny's character may have been femme but she wasn't a lesbian, she saw Brandon as a guy and I saw her as straight.

I do agree about the rest of what they said though, and they do have good taste. The one movie i'm looking forward to is I Can't Think Straight and Out At The Wedding looks cute as well.

hmmm, Dara I actually did

hmmm, Dara I actually did become your facebook friend the other day, and I'm sure you dinged the cowbell last week so. clearly its true! Karman of course Dara is right, you do have the mojo with that guitar but I think you played a real one with Bridget on CTTA, the snowy one?

haha to you laughing about the batteries and the 'thunk' I learn so many words to use from you guys tho i think i used that one before :p

Bound sucked

NOT! :P

That's the best lesbian movie ever made. I always thought it was funny that it was made by two guys :P and awesome trivia about the trackingshot Dara. Usually no one pays attention to stuff like that and people call me a weirdo. You're the best *hugs*

this is your best vlog yet, ladies. one of my fav moments:

Karman: "..more fulfilling in a lot of ways, it's more of a conventional narrative, the acting is more even..."

Dara: "conventional narrative?"

Karman: "it's a, it's a ROMANCE..."

Dara: "I enjoyed the juxtaposition of the metaphors inherent in the character of Toby..."

Karman: "are you done?"

i'm also a fan of but i'm a cheerleader .

Imagine Me and You

I am a huge fan of Imagine Me and You!  I think that even though there isn't much physical contact between Lena and Piper, they did an amazing job with the sexual tension that just continued to build over the course of the movie.  Not to mention I think it was really well written, it wasn't over the top or ridiculous (okay maybe expect standing on top of the car screaming "You're a wanker number 9").

m916903m's picture

its getting better!

i agree, lesbian films are getting better now. but still Saving face and Imagine me & you are on top of my list. i could say that i have watched almost all of the films you guys mentioned , yes to debs, yes to all over me (well, leisha's in it) ,but sorry i disagree with you karman i like adventures of 2 girls rather than Go fish... i haven't watch stranger inside (seems interesting)and looking forward to watch the world unseen and i can't think straight...

let me share that my first lesbian movie was If these walls could talk2.. definitly a good movie and a good way to start.. it made me cry(yay!)

piphoo peraboo, "the hot chick with the nice teeth" ...ohh that was a pine tree LOL!!! you guys makes me laugh time and again. thank you!!!!

Love and Other Catastrophes

Not actually a 'lesbian movie' per se, but 'Love and Other Catastrophes' does have, at its heart (not just the centre, it is the absolute heart-beat of the film), the lesbian relationship between the always gorgeous Radha Mitchell and the equally gorgeous Frances O'Connor (plus Alice Garner who I always crushed on).

Unlike a lot of films that contain a lesbian couple this one doesn't push them to the periphery. They are front and centre thoughout the entire film. The other thing that makes it a truly wonderful viewing experience (apart from the girls themselves) is that the fact the two girls are in a relationship is completely and utterly a non-issue. It just is what it is. There are no double-takes by the male figures, no comments made or questions raised. The two girls are a couple and that's that.It is an idyllic world but it really does make you feel good to watch - plus the music is wonderfully 'up' in that mid-90's 'jangly pop' kind of way. It's a 5-star lesbian movie that should be on every 'best of' list and  in everyone's permanant collection. Actually, it isn't just a lesbian movie, it's really a 'queer' film because every one of the lead actors, male or female, has a completely and undeniably 'queer' vibe.

Oh, and if you've ever wondered where Missy Higgins got her sense of style (referenced on another recent After Ellen blog), this is the movie for you. One look at the 1996 O'Connor, Mitchell, Garner trio and you'll know exactly what her influences are.

Ottie_oi's picture

A big ditto to everything

A big ditto to everything you said!

I loved that the main characters being lesbians wasn't an issue - but wasn't at all hidden or downplayed either.  Just a fabulous non-issue.

I also would have added But I'm a Cheerleader and Show Me Love to the list.

debjordan's picture

pretty much agree except

Two more I really liked were "The Journey" (a downer but sooo well done by a first time filmmmaker), and "When Night is Falling", which was beautiful, and if I remember right, had a happy ending.

Great vlog, ladies, as always...

Show Me Love

I must have mentioned this movie milliion times, but it is my favorite because it is such a sweet story. It is basically what high school is like with the peer pressure, the drama queens and the clicks. And yeah, I know life isn't that happy and I know it is Swedish but hell it is the happiest lesbian movie I have ever seen. But seriously, netflix it...Show Me love (aka Fucking Amal) is just a very good movie.

Never met a pearl quite like you that could shimmer and rot at the same time through

delmacgirls's picture

oh man really??????

Karmen Karmen.....i thought you looked extra cute with that guitar lol But your comments on "2 girls in luv" :(

I dont know why...cause i didnt have a thing for Laurel holloman like i do now back then lol...but i love that little movie...so sweet:)

I always loved 'When night is falling' because it felt like a real movie..well shot etc AND a happy ending!!!! I get so tired of the girl going back to the boy or killing herself!!!

I think i have have watched If these walls could talk 2 more than any other gay movie but i have to skip the 1st segment it makes me so sad.......i totally love Ellen and Sharon...I thought they were hot, but my fave is Michelle Williams she is a fantastic actress.

Maybe because my GF and i were trying to have a baby when we 1st saw it and that happy dance at the end just makes you smile...and yes we have a lil guy now so fond memories......

anyway, my 2 cents....keep up the great work !!

I stalked Karyn Dwyer in the mall :D

No mention of Better Than Chocolate or But I'm a Cheerleader :(

Those are def my top two lesbian movies. Simply because they are sooo cute and sweet and they both have happy endings.

AND I totally saw Karyn Dwyer (Maggie from Better Than Chocolate) in the mall today and I may or may not have followed her into Sears... lol

smithy's picture

lol about Sears and...oh yeah...

...Better Than Choclate would have made my list too, i thought it was well acted and had a lot of good sort of, i guess like issues, would be the word i use, to deal with like with the whole lesbian bookstore thing. but yeah, i agree with you totally.

Perfect selection

Oh, yeah, even down to your choice of #1.

I liked Go Fish too, but I was at just the right age. It was nice to see the kind of women I recognised on screen, despite the bad acting, and I loved the tea shot. I didn't get Daria's supposed hotness either, it must be said, but I don't generally go for other butches (or Eddie Munster, LOL, I totally didn't get what that look reminded me of before!) I had no problems grokking Guinivere Turner's hotness, however (once she got rid of the goddamned baseball cap).

I don't understand why people are giving props to Gia, though, except for Elizabeth Mitchell. And I would have walked out of here too if you had mentioned Claire of the Moon in a positive sense... except maybe in the context of movies that are better with the sound off, and you inventing the dialogue.

While Fire is sad in parts, I didn't find the ending that sad; so too with High Art. Syd has learned a few things about herself at the end of that movie. I saw Desert Hearts the year it came out, and the year I came out, when I was 18, so it's a pretty seminal movie for me too. :-)

I have to second the call for When Night Is Falling. Canadian (heh), and Pascale Bussieres is OMFG hot hot hot. While school uniforms are hot, conflicted religion teachers in long skirts and high-buttoned blouses, and with French accents, are hotter. And while we're on the topic of Patricia Rozema, I liked I've Heard the Mermaids Calling as well. Yes, it's a bit self-consciously arty, but the sushi restaurant scene is excruciatingly hilarious, and the general idea of idols with feet of clay is one I can go along with. And more French accents.

While we're on about French accents, what about 8 Femmes/8 Women? Hil. Arious. Singing and dancing. Emmanuelle Beart in a maid's outfit. Catherine Deneuve and Fanny Ardant's wrestling/make-out scene. What else do you want?
