Brunch with Shoshana Bean (Brunch with Bridget, Episode 57)

This week, Bridget welcomes to Brunch the beautiful and talented Broadway star Shoshana Bean.

Bean talks to Bridget about starring as Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, being a straight ally in the fight for LGBT rights, and her new CD, Superhero.

Along the way, she also teaches Bridget to hold a microphone "like a lady." As you can imagine, it's an uphill battle.

Wickedly good!

Nice visit with Shoshana!  Always fun to see people out of their element and get down to basics!  Am definitely going to check out her CD.

The 'lesbian' content in Wicked is more apparent in the book.  One of the things that does happen in life are women who have not yet realized or accepted they are gay have that attraction, yet fall back on the expected and put their energy in men.  I have been witness to that myself in a friend.  The song 'Loathing' is a good example of the possible lesbian content

What is this feeling,
So sudden and new?
I felt the moment
I laid eyes on you;
My pulse is rushing;
My head is reeling;
My face is flushing;
What is this feeling?
Fervid as a flame,
Does it have a name?
Yes! Loathing
Unadulterated loathing

Come on.....pulse rushing, face flushing, head reeling?  LADIES, LADIES!

Bridget you should know you gay broadway!

speaking from one bridget to another, i surprised you don't pick up on the gay contetn of wicked!!!  they aren't fighting over a guy, they're fighting over each other.  society is telling them be with the man, when really they only wanna have lil green galinda junior babies together they adopted from munchkinland.  there's a tonnn of fanfic about them totally being LUGs at Shiz at the very least.  =P

i heartyou shoshana bean!!! i have your version of "o bless the lord my soul" from godspell and it is amazing!!!

Woo, Shoshana! And, yes

Woo, Shoshana!

And, yes yes yes. The book of Wicked in particular is SO GAY. Even the author says so. Oh, prickly hawk-nosed Elphaba. <3

Shoshana Bean!!??

Ok im having a major freak out! I love love LOVE this lady! She is wickedly funny (pun intended) and just the most brilliant singer ever. Shes not my favourite Elphie (thats gotta be Idina off course), but i love the work she did on Godspell and Hairspray. Superhero rocks and those shows she does with Megan Hilty are H-I-Larious, lol. Wow, im in awe...

SHOSHANA BEAN!

I'm definitely agreeing on Gelphie (read: Elphaba/Glinda for those not in the know). Shoshana's too funny. You should totally get more amazing Broadway ladies on your show! Like, Idina!!

Defying Gravity

In my humble opinion, Defying Gravity is the coming out song of "Wicked"

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules

Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap

It's time to try
Defying
gravity
I think I'll try
Defying
gravity
And you can't pull me down...

I love Shoshana Bean as Elphaba, of course second only to Idina Menzel

The true measure of character

They say in showbiz to never work with kids or animals.  I was impressed with how you included that adorable Mimi so seemlessly in the interview.  The true character of a person is measured by how well they treat animals.  For that, this was my favorite episode to date!

yay

broadway people on brunch with bridget =] there should be more of this.

and as for the lesbian undertones in wicked, i think it all depends on who you see it with (as in who the leads are) and if they're particularly touchy that night maybe. also, you can find something more than friendship there if you look for it.

Well also there is such a big difference between the book and the musical. I absolutely adore the musical (might even be my fav), but its pretty tame. The book is way edgier and sooo gay, lol, really you hardly have to read between the lines, plus its actually really well written.

i very much agree =] the book has way more gay and subtext, and the author has said as much. and it is amazingly written, it's definitely one of my favorites.
