Beth Ditto Sizes Up Topshop

According to British music rag NME, The Gossip's front woman Beth Ditto wants skimpy clothing store Topshop to make plus-size clothing, and she's even willing to design the line herself.

Topshop (which I'm told is the British equivalent of Forever 21 in terms of producing inexpensive hoochie-wear) recently invited the band to give several in-store performances. But Ditto declined on principal, telling BBC 6 Music: "I don't think it's fair to put my face somewhere where they would never let me in there to wear their clothes. I want the respect that Kate Moss gets. If they want our music they've got to actually do something to earn it. I can get money anywhere, I don't need your money unless you're going to do it my way."

She added, "Give me the job. I want to design, I want you to make clothes for big girls, big boys, I want you to make big sizes."

    This woman rocks

It is so refreshing to hear an artist with conviction. I know recording artists are in a precarious situation with their labels, not to mention the politics of our commercial/political system, but I really think it's positive (for personal health but also sustained viability over years) when someone speaks their mind and isn't intimidated. (Of course, we can all find examples of artists, Dixie Chicks notwithstanding, who have paid a price for doing so....but, I always end up by thinking, What's the point of playing it safe, really? You'll die eventually and have no respect.)

Thank you, Beth. Love your singing, too!!

    at last.....

.. maybe something decent to wear, i'm sick of shoes being the only decent thing i can buy, and that says a lot because i really like shoes!

    Torrid

I'd rather her model for Torrid.
Designing clothes is cool...but given the kind of clothes Forever 21 sells...I'm not so sure I'd want to see my fellow curvy girls wearing them...
I just hope Beth Ditto TRULY knows what flatters girls with curves.

She did an interview for them a while back....
I'd love to see her model on there. I find her pretty hot and it'd be nice to see a celebrity I like modeling the kind of clothes I can fit.

I am glad she stood up for herselves and other curvy girls. =]

    rock!

Ay, Beth Ditto is so damn cool!  I had to good fortune to meet and exchange a few words with her after a small concert a couple of years back, and she's also an incredibly nice and humble person.  I'm so impressed, and thankful, that she has the conviction and the balls to stand up for what she believes in.

    Topshop

I'm all for celebrities combatting the super-skinny mandate, but I have to say here I think it's slightly misdirected. I really wouldn't describe Topshop as 'hoochie wear'. It's high fashion affordable clothing for teens and young women, which, as far as i know , are available up to size 16 UK (US 12). I really don't see what they did wrong.

    Size it up

Since I live in France I have absolutely no idea what this Topshop sells... however I can easily imagine what king of shop it is and I'm sorry to tell you this but sizes up to 16 (UK) are not very high at all !

And believe me when I say that by the way she looks I would say that Beth Ditto wouldn't have a single chance to find anything that would fit her in this shop...

    no way.

Topshop shouldnt make plus size clothes.

Everyone moans about how shops promote eating disorders like bullemia/anorexia, becasue of the small sizes that that sell and the skeletal models they use and that they shouldnt do it how bad it is.

Well this is exactly the same but the oposite, this would be promoting obesity, how is that good? having plus sizes is giving obese teenages a pat on the back or just handing them burgur to congratulate their unhealthy size which leads to heart problems and could eventually cause early death.

so yeah well done on supporting that.

what happened to promoting healthy body types? how is obese healthy?

    !!!!!??????????????

Beth Ditto is amazing, plus she's as fit as can be. There are very few performers I have EVER seen who can dance and sing like that over an entire set. She's a fantastic role model, must be amazingly strong and healthy, she' been in the press here speaking out against taking drugs and in my eyes is an absolute hero. The impact this outstanding woman is having on 'body' politics in th UK is incredible.  She's proof you can be healthy what ever size or shape you are and her actions and words are helping children and adults to be accepted and accept themselves, despite being surrounded by body fascist ignorance, bullying and persecution. She's made more strides forward for women and gay and lesbian visibility in the last few months in a controlled, dignified and eloquent way they I've seen any individual do in the last 20 years in the UK.

    It's not just Plus Sizes

Topshop is one of the worst shops on the high street for discriminating against body shapes. Just have a look on their website, I can see loads of pieces of clothes that wouldn't suit me. I'm only a size 10, but I do have quite big boobs, a small waist and then curvy hips and I really struggle at Topshop. They just make clothes for girls who are straight up and down. If you have to wear a bra, there's loads of the backless dresses and stuff that you just can't wear. What's the point in making the clothes they design in bigger sizes if they're just not gonna suit you! Shop somewhere else I say until Topshop take the hint.
