Updates on "Uncharted 2," "Wii Sports Resort" and more from The E3 Conference

This past week was E3, the biggest week in the video gaming calendar and we've got the rundown for you right here at AfterEllen.com.

Microsoft held a smart press conference that wasn't without its dig at Sony. The conference pretty much started with them saying they were going to concentrate on the games and not the facts and figures — and that's exactly what they did.

The biggest announcement from the Microsoft camp came to us in the form of "Project Natal" (said Natal as in the hot Russian spy name Natalia, not the baby popping "pre-natal"), a new motion sensing controller that seems to promise everything from full 3D motion sensing to doing your laundry.

Geek girl cutie Felecia Day was on hand to inform us about social network sites Twitter and Facebook both coming to Xbox Live. This is a cool addition for addicted tweeps and their peeps. This should be out in the Fall.

A surprise announcement regarding the "Metal Gear Solid" franchise was cleverly integrated with "Metal Gear Solid: Rising" being announced. The title won't feature "Solid Snake," who remains within Sony's grasp for the time being it seems, given they too had a MGS announcement themselves.

Also covered in some depth was "The Beatles Rock Band," which actually kicked off the MS conference. The instruments look cool, but really, who needs another plastic guitar? If you love The Beatles then you'll love this when it's released Sept. 9.

The Beatles Rock Band

Pro skateboarder Tony Hawk also made an appearance to plug his new title "Tony Hawk: Ride," the game that utilizes a full skateboard controller peripheral. Yes, just when you thought you had enough large plastic gaming peripherals, there's more! This looks pretty cool.

Other things mentioned of interest included a stunning trailer of "Modern Warefare 2," which featured some sweet ice-climbing and snow mobile chases. Upcoming Xbox Live arcade racer "Joy Ride" also made an appearance and looked like it might be fun (assuming it has tight controls). A nice "Final Fantasy XIII" trailer was also shown and it looked astounding (release spring 2010). "Splinter Cell :Conviction" was also shown and it's looking sweet for those ladies that like sneaking around (in games obviously).

There were a few other titles on offer, but none got us as excited as once particular game released later this year. Yes we're talking zombie shooter "Left 4 Dead," back with its follow-up, the cleverly titled "Left 4 Dead 2". The game will feature four new survivors and new melee weapons, including the chainsaw, now tell us you didn't just squeal just a little.

The big name in gaming, Sony, had quite a few cross over trailers, a load of facts and figures (they do love those) about how well the Playstation is selling and a few exclusive bits of news. Sony did have one big surprise though:

As though they had decided that MS and Nintendo were going to take over the world with their motion sensing controller technology, Sony once more lept in with something of their own. The Sony motion sensing wand controller is in its prototype stage, but is said to bring true 1:1 motion control to Sony Playstation. It wasn't as interesting as Natal, but it had some fairly impressive technology of its own.

Our standout title of the Sony conference was "Uncharted 2," which is looking gorgeous. Other big titles on show were "The Beatles Rock Band," "Final Fantasy XIII," "Ratchet and Clank Future," "Modern Warfare 2," "Gran Turismo PSP" and the impressive looking 256 player game "MAG."

Uncharted 2

All in all, the Sony conference though was a bit of a let down and featured way too many facts and sales figures that the games press seem bored with.

Nintendo marketing VP Cammie Dunaway (love her!) hit the stage for Nintendo, which is far better than when Reggie does, so that was a good start. Cammie talked gaming trends and pointed out Nintendo's strides in expanding the gaming audience, something they have certainly done well this year.

Mario gets a mention and Nintendo blow everyone away by announcing "New Super Mario Bros. Wii." Fans of Nintendo may have been disappointed at the lack of Zelda during their conference, but the new Mario Bros. somewhat stemmed that sting.

There were no huge surprises at the Nintendo conference, but there was Nintendo quality. Wii Motion Plus was once more brought out along with "Wii Sports Resort" and it will finally hit shelves in the U.S. on July 26.

Other news out of the Nintendo conference comes to us in the form of tennis favorite "Virtua Tennis" coming to the Wii. Crime writer James Petterson is bringing "Women's Murder Club: Games of Passion." Ubisoft showed their upcoming DS cop title "Cop: The Recruit", which looked pretty nice for a DS title. "Mario Galaxy 2" also made a swift and colorful appearance and finally "Metroid: Other M" seemed to garner a lot of interest.

Overall our stand out moments of E3 2009 had to be Microsoft's "Project Natal." If this thing does half the things it promises, it's going to take gaming to the next level and we applaud that. "Uncharted 2" by Sony is looking like a cracking title and it's nice to see a cool title like "Super Mario Bros." getting all updated for the Wii platform.

Over at LesbianGamers.com we've got more in depth coverage of E3 2009, along with trailers and news all with a lesbian twist.

Happy gaming!

Project Natal....

For me it will have to way more than half the thing it promises, it will have to do it all... if it's only half, it won't be anything better than the PSeye. And I'm not really excited about it at all anyway, interested yes, but not excited. I'm highly skeptical, their demonstration only proved that they can do Wii-Lite games for now so I don't see the appeal. And let's not even start on Mylo...

The only thing i want to do with Natal is play old adventure games like Maniac mansion, sam & max, Monkey Island... etc...... I'm more interested in Wii motion plus and Sony's controller right now. I may just have to buy a Wii again this summer.

Heavenly Sword 2?

Anyone know the status of the Heavenly Sword series? Was it canned?

It was depressing to see so few featured games with main female characters... actually, the only one I can think of was "Wet" but that one wasn't really a main attraction. If Assassin's Creed 2 gets to be made, why not Heavenly Sword 2? They were both highly anticipated games that recieved lukewarm reception.

Hazelflagg's picture

No Heavenly Sword 2....:(

I read that Heavenly Sword 2 will not be made. They batted the idea around and for a while now, but in the end the company said it was just better to start a fresh new venture.

Break my heart...I loved this game. I have been playing game for years, and this was the first female character in a game that I have adored.

I do have to say, I am very much looking foward to Uncharted.

$$$?

Since release Assassin's Creed sold more then 8 million units. Heavenly Sword I think has sold around 2 million or something. Maybe because it was Sony developing they didnt want to gamble on making Heavenly Sword 2. Who knows, maybe they are being all sneaky like, James Cameron style but are keeping it totally under wraps for now. Sometimes its about the money, rather then making those people that did buy and enjoy a game happy. Down side of console exclusive games imo. Anyways, keep your fingers crossed till Sony offically releases a statement..so far all just rumors from what ive seen.

God of War 3!!

Last Gaurdian, Heavy Rain were also mentioned at the sony conference, I was really impressed, I didn't think theirs was ALL numbers and figures.

E3, better then xmas eve

If MS has been working on Project Natal as long as they say they have..then they should be able to pull off close to, if not everything they intend. Maybe I look at it not only from a gaming perspective, but the technical side of it. Just the fact that they have all those different aspects in a bundle (cam, software and so on) is greatness to me. Yes, the idea itself isnt so much new, but their result (project natal) is Microsofts take on interactive gaming. A 3D cam actually taking you into the game, you yourself being the controller vs. having to hold anything at all. I think each companies product on this subject is major. Each in their own right a product of great minds and hard work. And as far as Milo goes, I think Lionhead did a great job. To me it seems like they all had fun creating what they did. Gotta love Lionhead.. Overall though, the announcement of Project Natal was the most exciting E3 news for me. Another awesome highlight for me was when Microsoft announced Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4 coming to the 360. I basically had to put the airing on pause to laugh at Sonys expense. Such a rofl moment.

Felicia Day seemed a bit nervous during the Facebook/Twitter announcement and then later being "interviewed" (asked questions she basically already answered in the announcement..gj) by g4tv. Made me wanna give her a standing ovation for diggin deep and gettin through it so well. "Nerve-racking treat" indeed. Yay Felicia.
Not a football fan, but when Pele came out to announce and talk about Academy of Champions, I was touched. Its awesome that someone would want a game created for the reasons he did. And he seemed to have almost the same passion about Academy of Champions as he does for football in general. Simply awesome.

Ubisofts confrence was so hard for me to watch. It started with about 40 minutes of maybe 4 different people yappin away. James Cameron going on and on about Avatar, describing all this stuff. Then WHAM...no trailer, nothin. Just a simple, come by our booth to check it out. Was disappointing for me. I somewhat felt like I deserved a reward for sitting through his long, drawn out, repetative speech :(. Hmm, maybe a TRAILER or even screenshots would have brightened my mood. Thanks Mr. Cameron.
After they did finally get into showing trailers, they didnt let me down (still want a reward for the first 40 or so minutes though, yes im still bitter).

Im pretty much excited for games in general, but some of the ones on my radar are:
Left 4 dead 2.."And if we run out of bullets, baby..they gonna wish we hadnt." Chainsaw, axe..with those alone how can you go wrong? Hope we can use the frying pan you see at the end of the trailer...and was that a bat I saw as well? But really, running around beating zombies upside the head with a frying pan..sounds like a good laugh to me.
Splinter Cell: Conviction - Ive liked the others, and definitely like the new look and feel to this one.
Ghost Recon 4
The Saboteur - I thought it was a bit like Assassins Creed meets Splinter Cell in a way.
APB - Im kinda iffy about this one..but theres guns :).
Alpha Protocol - "Action/RPG, but also has an action element to the dialogue", Matthew Rorie pretty much said it all.
Assassins Creed 2 - Loved the trailer, wish they showed gameplay though...icing on the cake.
Super Mario Bros. - Talk about bringing back memories. I cant not get this one. Might have to steal my sister away from her husband and kids and force her to play just so I can reminisce.
WET - Not gonna lie..one of the main reasons is because Eliza Dushku is the voice for Rubi. Really though, isnt that enough of a reason?
Fight Night 4 - Not really into this type of game because of the scripted movement (and the repetativeness). Gameplay feels awkward. But, EA said they got rid of the scripted movements, so theres no barrier restricting you from gettin up close and personal to beat the hell out of your opponent.
Tony Hawk Ride - I dont skateboard, and I dont really ever get into any of the Tony Hawk games, but I might have to get this just for the skateboard controller (sad yet true).
Halo 3 ODST - Kinda over the whole Halo thing like so many others. On the other hand, somewhat of a different story..and I cant deny the graphics all. Think I might rather watch trailers then buy it though...

I realize my "comment" is far too long already, but did anyone else think Ruse was kinda cool? It made me think of something like Microsoft Surface. I obviously wasnt thinking and didnt put two and two together till I later took a visit to their site. Talk about having this great expectation and being highly disappointed due to being way off base. Im going to go ahead and blame the trailer..but I suppose my lack of sleep at the time could of played a tiny role. Damn you Ubisoft for gettin my hopes up with that one. Maybe they should actually be literal with their game in comparison to the trailer next time. Anyone else happen to interpret the trailer this way? Or am I the lone soul hoping to some day play a version of Battleship in the way depicted in that damn trailer lol.

No MGS4

Metal Gear Solid 4 is not coming to 360, unless you think Metal Gear Solid Rising is somehow the 4th metal gear game on 360. It doesn't even have Snake on it and it's not even a game in the style of Metal Gear Solid.
Ctrl+F'ing Me's picture

No idea why I said Metal

No idea why I said Metal Gear Solid 4 when I did infact mean Metal Gear Solid Rising (other then the fact that MGS4 should be on the 360). So ty for catchin my slip up :). Kinda wish Koijma had more to say when he was on stage though..

WET

I was hoping someone else also picked up the news that Eliza Dushku is voicing the main character in the upcoming game 'Wet.' Watched the trailer a while back, it's a bit over the top I'll admit, but c'mon....I'm still so getting this. ;)

How could you not get it

How could you not get it :P? Did you have a chance to catch g4tv talkin to Eliza and the creative director? If you havent, heres a link. My fav part of the gameplay they showed was Rubi cuttin off some guys hand then kickin him into on coming traffic lol.

Anguissette's picture

Road rage.

I love how she was car-hopping on the freeway, that was freakin' crazy! Thanks for the link! lol

-drools-

I cannot wait for this fall to come!

And woah! Eliza in Wet? I'm so gonna get that! I still play Saints Row 2 thanks to her gorgeous voicework for that skanky, drugged up Shaundy.

Anguissette's picture

Agreed!

Her voice def stands out a bit... ;)
