Gaming is for girls: video games for "Clueless" and "Mean Girls" are in the works

There's quite a few tidbits of information from the video games press sector this week. Sure it's in the shadow of E3, but hey it's still video gaming news, so here we go.

Legacy Interactive has teamed up with Paramount Digital Entertainment to develop titles based on the popular Paramount Pictures’ films Clueless, Mean Girls and Pretty in Pink. Yes ladies and gents, it's all about casual gaming here and it sounds absolutely dire.

Here's a rundown straight from the press sheet:

In Clueless: The Game, the player takes on the part of Cher trying to find perfect boyfriends for all her pals. Players will need to figure out what kind of guy their friends want by noticing what clothes these potential suitors wear and what sort of interests they have. Once Cher knows what they want, she will have to pick out the right elements to make the perfect man for them. Players will have to be quick! Love waits for no one!

Mean Girls: High School Showdown allows players to take on the role of a student trying to restore balance to the many cliques in their high school and to end the reign of the terrible “plastic clique" — the prettiest girls and the meanest of the mean. To do this, players will need to unite the cliques by using a few tricks of their own. Players can choose to take the high road by using kind words and revealing important truths at the right time, or use the Plastic’s own evil tricks against them, by using rumors, pranks and put downs. A mix of both might go a long way, too!

The classic 80’s hit movie, Pretty in Pink, is known as a movie that defined a generation, and now players will have the chance to relive the story in an all-new entertaining game format. Through a series of beautifully rendered scenes, players will need to solve a variety of fun and challenging visual puzzles in order to experience the memorable story about love, friendship, the clash of social cliques and how to rise above them. Andie, Duckie, Blane, and the rest of the unforgettable characters from both “the wrong side of the tracks” and not, return to play out the romantic fairytale love story, but this time with a dramatic difference … their fate will be put in the hands of the player.

So there you have it: women gamers once more looked upon as drivel by a certain sector of the games industry (given these games will surely only appeal to the 8-10 female, if even).

In other news this week, the teaser trailer for the new Tomb Raider: Underworld game was released and looks awesome. Its use of Mozart's "Lacrimosa" is superb and the trailer brings about all manner of questions, such as "Lara … WTF are you doing?!!" and "Lara, why are your pants so low, doesn't that hinder climbing somewhat and give you terrible wedgies?"

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop (what a great title!) is the Wii game based on zombie fest Dead Rising, which has sold in excess of one million units since its release in 2006 (pretty cool game, but not fantastic). Chop Till You Drop is scheduled to hit store shelves this winter and utilizes the WiiMote to shoot, slash and bludgeon through a zombie infested shopping mall.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords - Revenge of the Plague Lord — wow that's some title — hit the Xbox LIVE Marketplace on July 23, 2008, just on the off-chance you missed it. The expansion pack is available for play as an addition to LesbianGamers' favorite game Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords for Xbox LIVE Arcade. It includes four new hero professions, scores of new spells to cast and items to collect, challenging new quests, monsters and bosses, and the introduction of a new archenemy. Revenge of the Plague Lord will set you back 700 Microsoft Points.

World renowned for their amazing shredding abilities, three legendary guitar artists make their virtual debut in Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock. The Guitar Virtuoso Track Pack continues the ultimate rock experience with three fresh master tracks set to storm living rooms across the globe from July 24.

New tracks include influential guitarist Joe Satriani’s soulful 1987 hit, “Surfing with the Alien,” guitar slinger Steve Vai’s reflective, “For the Love of God,” and eccentric guitarist, Buckethead, as he shreds “Soothsayer,” at hyper-speed.

I don't recognize the names of any of the songs and would rather have some Amy Lee, but I guess she's more Rock Band than Guitar Hero. The Guitar Virtuoso Track Pack is available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the PlayStation Store now.

Do any of these sound worthy of your game time?

yay...

Great, more video games tailored to "girls." If the gaming industry really wants to inlcude the female players, they'll need to start listening to real live women, not the virtual ones that they dream about on screen. There's tons of female gamers, lesbian or not!

I think the moral of this recent press release is, don't make games for women if you have no intention on making it worth their dollar.

Megan's picture

ehh....

I think Clueless and Mean Girls as a game is a horrible idea. However.....Tomb Raider: Underworld looks pretty cool.

Are there really "tons" of female gamers? I personally don't know any females who play....or at least play regularly. I know there are groups like lesbian gamers and PMS but that's not really a lot. I think in the last 2 years of playing Halo 3 on xbox live I have only come across a handful of girls playing. What's the deal?

Women gaming

About 40% of the online gaming population are women.  Polls are always skewed though, but I don't imagine it is that far off.  I don't think as many women are interested in console gaming just for the lack of personal interaction.

Halo was made popular by college guys with the online play, I wouldn't really expect that many women to play.  That's where most of the hype came from.  Personally, I didn't care for it -- There are far better first person shooters out there.

I guess you are right. I

I guess you are right. I don't suppose I've ever looked at actual stats....just going by what I've seen playing.

Is it that a lot of women don't play Halo in particular or is it that they don't enjoy first person shooter games in general?

Harpy's picture

Halo

Well, my thoughts on Halo are that women are not so interested in the online gameplay because of the 'macho' guys.  Or the just freaky insane guys like this.  Atleast, I don't have any interest in hearing that crap when I play.

I love first person shooters, but Halo is known for it's online play and online gamers just know how to ruin it for others.

omg, that guy has serious

omg, that guy has serious mental issues. I don't understand how people take things that far.....what a nutcase.

I agree it does suck coming across idiots that trashtalk but muting it or beating them usually takes care of it for me. ; )

jaydock's picture

Oh, god no kidding. The only

Oh, god no kidding. The only game I ever play online is GH3, and it's full of faux-"macho" guys trying to play DragonForce on expert. It's such bullshit. I've taken to playing with the small Asian character to show them that a girl can kick their ass. Easily.

It just seems like an opportunity for men/boys who feel the need to act tough. Over the internet. Give me a break.

Harpy's picture

No thanks

I'll pass on Clueless, Mean Girls, Hello Kitty Online and Pretty in Pink.  I mean, come on, really?

When I got my new phone there was a waitressing game on it.  I can't imagine that was created with men in mind.  Sad.

Ugh, this is

Ugh, this is exactly why female gamers gain so much criticism in the first place. Developers begin releasing ridiculously stereotypical games geared towards females, and it makes us all look like morons. @__@ I think it's fair to say 98% of female gamers would rather die than touch one of these games. Honestly, the thought of any of these games being released makes me want to vomit.

On a positive note, I cannot WAIT for Dead Rising to be released for the Wii! Oh, yeah, baby, chop till you drop indeed! I'm gonna have hours of fun with that game, hehehe.

I love clueless & pretty in

I love clueless & pretty in pink.......why??????????? This is the worst idea, it are probably going to be very limited games.

Lara Jean's picture

Oh wow...

My first thoughts while reading this all related to whether or not you were going to jump out and say, in bold text, "April Fools!!!" It just sounds like a giant joke, which I guess explains my feelings about creating matchmaking video games, or games about high school escapades.

Also, I think Pretty in Pink and Clueless have kind of missed the video game boat... a lot of adolescents won't know the movies, and those of us who do (and either feel nostalgic toward them or weren't interested the first time 'round) are probably at the point where we don't have time to revert to high schoolish behaviours*.

*By high schoolish behaviours I mean setting up our virtual teachers/friends and spending our days worrying about what the virtual jocks, geeks and dropouts do on a daily basis... I'm not referring to gaming in general.

true

Maybe there aren't that many female gamers that don't like first person shooters, but I have many friends who love RPG's, (role playing games). The whole Final Fantasy Series, Kingdom Hearts, Oblivion, Mass Effect, and many many others.

Personally, I enjoy first person shooters like the Quake Series, Gears of War, (mostly for the coop), Turok on Nintendo 64, C-12 (not very popular, but still awesome game on playstation). There's more, but I may bore everyone reading the post.

I would say to draw more female gamers they should create more games like Heavenly Sword and Tomb Raider where the star player is female. That being said, she should also not be made to look like a 14-year-old males wet dreams.

Well, I guess I don't mind scantilly clad video game characters, but for the sake of not making every women character an object, I would make them have just as many cool toys as the guys, and make them just as strong.

Katie's picture

That's part of the problem

That's part of the problem with a lot of the games I've seen with female leads - they all end up looking like Jessica Rabbit and they're the weakest characters. I like the concept of Lara Croft as a strong, kick-ass character, but she's indeed drawn like "a 14-year-old male's wet dreams." Where's the REAL-looking female characters at, yanno?

I think the movie games mentioned at the top of the article are horrible concepts. It paralells the thought that all men like first-person shooters. I know plenty of male gamers that love the RPG's as much as I do... and I like to blow stuff up myself every now and then.

When it comes to entertainment, trying to solely use stereotypical gender roles as some sort of guide will never work!

Mar's picture

Agreed..

Allow me to begin by saying that I completely agree with everything you said. :o)

However, i feel the need to point out that the male leads in most video games aren't exactly "Joe Averageguy" either. (Really, i think this has more to do with a cultural expectation...average looking people just aren't what a 'hero' should look like).

I think the main problem comes from the fact that, in most games, at least the peripheral male characters show some.. diversity,..(sometimes there's a fat guy, or maybe a dude who has bad hair..) while the women in games are almost -always- characatures of the female ideal, no matter -who- they are.

Gaming is an industry that's only just begun to reach it's potential, (and one that's still trying to understand it's growing audience) and i think the best way to show them that we're not going to put up with this 'Shopping/Boyfriend Matching/PseudoGirlie' crap is to not buy these games. Let's not buy the heck out of them!

Maybe send an email or two, as well. Something along the lines of "For shame, <insert distributer name>.. Shame."

omg

I think i just heard every fiber of my body scream "NOO!" in response to Clueless and Mean girls games, i would rather get my hands on resident evil 5 mm oh yes.

Dead rising: chop till you drop.. some one must have been reading my wishlist cause it sounds like a whole lotta awesome xD

The Tomb raider trailer looks cool but when i saw it i was thinking "Is that leather pants Lara is wearing? must be hella hard to go archeology hunting with 'em on."

Well the Clueless and Mean Girls should be...interesting. Dead Rising and Tomb Raider look good... :)

Take a listen to "For the

Take a listen to "For the Love of God" and "Surfing the Alien". Satriani and Vai are big thumbs up if you like good ol' guitar solos. :)

Boo to Amy Lee and her over produced music.

And as for why women might not game as much... my theory is that females mature much quicker and by correlation don't find video games as appealing and tend to be drawn to their career, family, a more constructive hobby or doing more socialable things.

Brutal_Romance's picture

oh lord...

i'm not sure what kind of consumers they are directing with these games, (personally i believe girls no older than 10) but if video game creators really think that girls want to play a video game where you have to play cupid or bitch in hallways, i dont believe they have ever talked to girl gamer before.

i for one dont mind the Tomb Raider trailer teaser, whether her pants were too low or not. :P

who am i kidding, thats exactly what i hoped for. *sigh*

Tomb Raider looks awesome,

Tomb Raider looks awesome, but the new Dead Rising title for Wii? No thank you, the first one drove me to my grave.

Mean Girls Game??

I'm not gonna lie, that 'Mean Girls' games sounds kinda fun(ny). I can only hope it'll be similar to Rockstar's "Bully", however, movie-oriented games have a tendency to be rather low in gaming quality...

But I can only imagine the fun things the game implies. I love the idea of playing as a student in a school-setting. Pulling pranks on other students, saying inCREDIBLY mean things and getting away with it, and facing Regina George in a boss battle (but you win in the end cause she gets hit by a bus xD ) And if were lucky, we might get a lesbian cut scene, just like the two girls making out at the halloween dance party! =D Well...Maybe not, but still it'd be fun to imagine!

As for the clueless game...*shudders* I dunno...Maybe if an option to try and 'catch' a girl was available, then I'd be all over it like a Harvest Moon/Sims game...The main character is adoringly cute though...

abbagirl's picture

eh.

if a video game has neither power chords, a la guitar hero, nor moderate violence, then i'm afraid i'm not too interested.  :)

the mean girls game sounds kind of similar to bully.  i didn't like bully too much . . . .

but i swear i'm not the mean, violent type.  i only like moderate violence.  nothing too bloody or gory, but something that at least gives one the opportunity to punch, kick, throw, or throttle the enemy to the death.

:-D

no. just no

when will people learn that movie turned video games are a bad idea? the only good movie turned video to come out was goldeneye 007 for N64 and that was a loooooong time ago

though i gotta say, it'd be funny if they make the mean girls game into something like no more heroes. hehe imagine lindsay riding a motorcyle and slicing people up with a katana
