Women of IndyDid you watch the Indianapolis 500 this weekend? Three women competed in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in the 91-year history of the event. Danica Patrick finished eigth, Sarah Fisher finished eighteenth, and Milka Duno had a minor crash that took her out of the race. To catch you up on the significance of the women's competition, check out the Sports Illustrated photo gallery of the women and the history of the event. I can't say I'm a NASCAR fan. I grew up in the South, and never understood it. Boiled peanuts and sweet tea, I understand. Racing around in circles in a track, I don't. I do admit the women dressed in firesuits give me pause for reflection. Milka Duno:
Makes me want to dig up my "Beers. Chicks. Trucks" t-shirt. Is it okay to want to come back in another life as a steering wheel? Sarah Fisher is my favorite, with those bookish glasses. She looks like a librarian gone bad.
The Indy 500 does bring up an interesting topic: women competing with men. Because, after looking at those photos, I'm sure you guys are all totally thinking about men right now. Men, men, men. Sally Jenkins, the Sports Illustrated and Wall Street Journal reporter, wrote an article about Danica's finish, her career, and the complicated issues that come up when women compete with men. Jenkins comments:
I like arch-femaleness. What do you think? Are you a part of the 40% of the NASCAR fans that are women? Submitted by on May 30, 2007 - 2:31pm. |

Indy 500 Women
Uh, actually... the Indy 500 has nothing to do with NASCAR. I believe that the Indy 500 is part of the IRL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indy_Racing_League) It's open cockpit instead of closed like NASCAR.
I think both are very interesting, although I usually wind up watching car racing when there isn't a baseball or football game on. But, it's very interesting, especially when there aren't a whole lot of Caution flags, then the teams have to decide how to pit. Do they stay out and wait for other teams to pit, but then maybe have a harder time catching up with the cars who already have newer tires, or do you go in early, and then risk there being a Caution flag later... It's like a gigantic game of chess, 200 MPH chess, but... chess... :)
As for your question, yep, I guess I am one of the 40%, on the other hand, I seem to pick up sports like people change socks...

Not a fan of Danica
I prefer Sarah Fisher. Danica only has the sponsors and attention because she is more attractive to some people. Also, she seems very snobby. I could care less about her career and to me it seems she is one of the women who hurt women in sports because not every woman is going to do a spread in a sexiest men's magazine for attention. A lot of them are probably better drivers than her.Sraha would be doing better if she was willing to do what Danica did. Good cars cost money

Like her or not
Danica Patrick has the skills.
Patrick has been putting up with sexist crap from the IRL boys club since she first appeared on the circuit. She was too small and too light and that was an unfair advantage. She was pretty and that was the only reason she was getting endorsements. Her boobs were too big, she couldn't be strapped in to the car. Despite everything, she just kept running her races and blowing through barriers.
Finally, along come a handful of other female racers and what do we get: Danica is the pretty one and that's why she's getting everything. Swell. Same tired, sad shit, different gender.
As for them being better drivers? What are you basing that assumption on -- the fact that you don't like Patrick? One 4th place finish and a pair of 8th place finishes out of 3 times out would seem to indicate that she's at least bringing a little something to the table other than just her looks and a fast car. There are some skills involved that don't include just accelerating and shifting gears. She was definitely in it to win it this year and turned in her most solid effort yet in spite of the constant rain game. Fisher has had at least 9 times up at Indy and hasn't managed to break out of the 20s but one time. After she's finished 9 starts, it isn't outside of the realm of real possibility that Patrick will be finishing with at least one visit to Victory Lane.
Fisher is every bit as attractive as Patrick, probably more so to some and there is no doubt that fans love her. If she hadn't waffled around in NASCAR about the time Patrick came on the scene, Fisher might have found herself getting the same level of attention Patrick enjoys. The fact that she isn't certainly is not Danica Patrick's fault and is no reason to discount Patrick's skills as a driver.
She doesn't have skills
That's my point. I don't think Patrick has skill. She just has access to better equipment because people consider her sexy. I think she is a weak driver. You can be the worst driver but if you are in a good car, that helps out a lot.I doubt she would survive in Nascar. The only reason people are concerned about her, is her looks.I just don't like or respect her. In the end, I think she si brining down women racers. She makes it seem like you can only get a good car deal is if you are willing to pose half naked across a car. Is that a message you really want to send to young girls?

time will tell
You can keep saying that she has no skills, but her stats say otherwise.
Yes, a good car is a big advantage, but you can have the best equipment in the world, and if you don't know how to use it then it is worthless. I could have the best car that money can buy and if I don't understand the mechanics of racing and the strategy and have the instincts, I'm going to lose. In fact, I'm probably going to go out and run into the wall and take a bunch of other drivers with me.
There are other lots of other drivers out there who have the same level of equipment and better and more experience than Patrick and she's able to compete with them at their level. If she lacked the skills at some point she would have been consistenly been blown off the track instead of improving.
As for the message she is sending young girls, would these be the same young girls who look up to the likes of Britney, Paris and Lindsay as icons?
I would hope that the message any athlete is sending to young girls is that if they want to put their hearts and minds into something and follow up with the sweat equity, that they can do anything that their hearts desire. Even if that desire is to race cars with the boys club at Indy and that is clearly what Danica Patrick is showing them is possible.
There are plenty of worse role models in sports and elsewhere than Danica Patrick.
If you feel that she's gotten where she is only because she's a pretty girl and did a FHM layout, then that's fine. I just happen to disagree.
Quite a bit of "make it up
Quite a bit of "make it up as I go" in Deja's post. Though she makes some good points about Danica, several of her "facts" are well off the mark. Her claim that the "sexist crap from the IRL boys club" had Danica's boobs being too big for her to be strapped into a car... Who said that, Deja? I've never heard that from anyone. I probably never heard it because it was never said. It was never said because Danica is about as flat as a board. People have said that about Ralf Shumacher's wife, Cora. People have said that about Milka Duno. Both of them sport silly-cone enhancements in the D-cup range and actually have had issues being strapped in. But be real, no one has said that about Danica, unless they were being mean and teasing her. Sam Hornish has bigger boobs than Danica. As well, no one in racing cares about how small (height wise) she is. Her weight, well of course that would be an issue. The IRL weighs the car without the driver. Most pro series weigh the car with the driver. No one who knows racing (or physics) would question that her weight provides a static advantage. That's the IRL's fault, not hers. Some comments made about her do smack of sexism. But that doesn't mean that there is not also some legitimate criticism. Like this is her 3rd year in the IRL (5th year in American open wheel racing) and she still can't get on or off pitroad consistently without spinning or stalling the car. Those are rookie issues. She's been around too long to still be struggling with that.
Sarah Fisher. Sarah has raced at Indy 9 times? Really? Danica has raced at Indy 3 times and Sarah has raced there 6 times. And yeah, Danica has always had good equipment and Sarah's was usually sort of marginal. But equipment aside, I believe Danica to be a better (formula) race car driver than Sarah. Danica grew up with go karts and formula cars. Sarah grew up with go-karts and sprint cars. IRL cars are formula cars > advantage Danica. Rahal sent Danica to Atlantics for two years and then moved her into his IRL operation. She's had enough time in formula cars to be well trained at this point. I don't particularly like (or dislike) either one. I do think Danica is incredibly over-hyped, considering that she has NEVER won a professional level auto race. Whereas Sarah Fisher has won races. She was actually a very promising sprint car driver. And then she fell for Tony George's IRL scheme and promises of Indy once again being for American short and dirt trackers. And Sarah didn't waffle around in NASCAR. She lost her IRL ride. She bummed around the track for most of one season and then managed to get a sorta-kinda lower level NASCAR deal. She got married and I believe she got back in school aftre dropping out (good for Sarah!). She got back in the IRL with some luck and some mystery bucks said to come from Tony George.
The hype surrounding Danica isn't all her fault. Her mother and father, T.J., are stage parents from hell. And I wouldn't hack her for taking the checks that are sent her way. I'd cash them too! But when she said that she didn't know what she wanted to do... maybe F1? I wonder if she giggled when she said that. Someone who has never won a race would only get into an F1 race if she bought a ticket. And when she mentioned NASCAR last year, there was no NASCAR deal. There were teams willing to let her drive a car... if she brought her own money to fund the team. Heck, I could get that kind of deal! That was a lie that she and her father cooked up to get more money from whatever IRL team would bring her on, as she was leaving Papa Rahal. AGR bit and Motorola paid. As far as I know, all parties are relatively happy now. Mike Andretti has a fat check (minus Danica's salary) and a championship this year. Danica has a nice paycheck and more endorsements than she ever had with Rahal. And T.J. and Mommy Dearest get their management cut.
Now that she's heading into her 4th IRL season and her 6th year of North American formula car competition, it is time for Danica Patrick to do one thing in order to silence her critics: WIN! Ashley Force wins. Angelle Sampey wins (races and championships!). Shirley Muldowney won (races and championships!). Desiree Wilson won. Katherine Legge (in Champ Car Atlantics) won. For all the hype and excuses (and Danica has more excuses than most people have dust bunnies under their couch), Danica Patrick has YET to put one in the W column. 2008... Danica Patrick... put up or shut up!
On the nice scale, Sarah
On the nice scale, Sarah would be hard to beat. She's just a... well... a really nice girl. She's not a blinding talent in formula cars, and never has been... but she was voted the IRL's Most Popular Driver numerous times because she was as good as she could be to everyone she met. A close second on the nice scale would have to be Milka Duno. Poor Milka can't drive a nail, but she's as sweet as she can be. I hope she gets out of the IRL (or they park her) before she kills herself. She's done OK in sports cars - that'll be a good place for her to return to. Danica seems to believe her own press. I've never heard anyone on her crew describe her as "nice"... but ya know, that's not her job. But if she can't win (and so far, she can't), she could at least bring her head back down to earth, IMO. Danica's into that "you go girl", be-a-brat, Diva silliness, it seems.
And no offense, but there's nothing Sarah could have done to get what Danica's got. Danica established a relationship with Bobby Rahal and that's how she got to where she is (in North American racing, I mean). For Sarah, she tried the same thing with Derek Walker but she didn't have the preparation that she should have had. Plus, to get the media hype and attantion, Sarah acting that way would have seemed unnatural. To get in a really good car (team, actually), you need talent... or lots of luck. You can't really buy your way into a (truly) good team. Well, I guess in the IRL you can. But in non-bush league series you can't.
NASCAR: The New Coke
Hi Guys,
Great comments about the women. Just to clarify: where I am from, race car driving is to NASCAR as soda is to Coke - generic term for racing, so I apologize for any confusion.
People don't walk around in IRL t-shirts, they walk around in black t-shirts with NASCAR written across the back.
Thanks to Vashti for sending me the Sports Illustrated photo gallery!

Woah.
Pussy Willow,
Thanks for the addition.
I agree.. major babe, and exhibiting total lesbian behavior.
Note holding five things in one hand, and no purse. It's both a beacon and a curse for identifying lesbians.
What, exactly, is our problem? I can't tell you how many times I've had on a glamorous dress, and a handful of #@(* in my hand, because I refuse to carry a purse.
I have a new crush now. I don't know what in God's name she is saying, but it's making me fall in love with her.
xox,
Kaki
Happy to oblige Kaki!
I suspect her words match the rather obvious gesture of her left hand. Ahhhh....don't we just love a tomboy.
AND she rides a motorbike...
AND to top it all off, she has a deliciously gravelly English voice...
