PETA utilizes a tired girl-on-girl trend

Following their banned Super Bowl commercial, animal rights group PETA decided to up the sexy ante by going gay on America with their “Girl-On-Girl Make-Out Tour.” The “Make-Out Tour” basically consists of two bikini-clad girls lying on mattresses at various street corners and periodically lip-pecking each other. (You can watch a video here.)

I’m sorry, but this sounds kind of like a Bud Light ad to me. I understand that PETA is trying to shake things up and get noticed, but I think all of this is just lame and exploitative. Yes, they’ll get noticed, because two girls making out is well, fun for everyone, but as Joaquin Phoenix proved the other night on Letterman, not all publicity is good publicity.

this whole thing just reeks of desperation. The big message behind PETA’s racy campaign is that studies have shown that veggies have better sex. Well, I’d like to see a study that shows how many straight men go veggie after seeing two girls pet each other.

PETA is placating to the stereotypical straight male fantasy that two women can’t wait for a big, burly man to come in and finish the job, or in this case, a big, burly broccoli-loving man. Sorry, PETA, but your latest stunt makes me hungry for a Big Mac.

Social progress at all costs?!

Why does one social conscience issue progressing mean that it has to drag another one back several paces? I find it ironic that the progress of PETA comes at the expense of the LGBTQ community. Their publicity stunt delegitimizes sex and love between two women. Is it too much to ask that visibility of one issue doesn't come at the price of another? And is it too much to ask that those working for social justice actually work together? I believe there are a lot of queer women who are (or were) PETA supporters whom have just been somewhat alienated from the cause.

Huh?

Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake, but I don't get the point of the ad. What the hell does two straight women making out have to do with animal rights? Doesn't anyone just stand on the corner and pickt anymore?

Another reason for me to hate PETA

Let's use a quote from one of the worst shows on ABC, to quote one of the worst adds ever made, "Seriously?"

"You either want them or you don't! Taking longer to decided is not going to make a difference!"

oh, PEtA. At least this

oh, PEtA. At least this isn't as bad as the picture of animals next to slaves.

I think the slavery analogy makes way more sense, than this girl on girl campaign does..
gemisoutrageous's picture

??

i have been aware of the peta girl on girl campaign for a while and find it to be TREMENDOUSLY degrading, but let's be for real here, the slavery campaign was still far more offensive.
Ungeheuer's picture

...

A lot of Animals actually ARE slaves until they get killed for Humans, thinking it'd be ok to kill what they "breed" (Slave"owners" thought the same way)

and just as some may think you could OWN Animals, Slaves were "owned" by others....

Oh dear, they're at it again...

Even if i wasn't already a vegan, im really not sure how that ad would make me want to be vegetarian...i guess these kinds of ads raise PETA's public image, which in turn helps get donations, which in turn goes to more productive animal rights campaigns (i hope! :/ )...
letsdrawkid's picture

Appalled.

I’ve been Vegan for quite some time now, and was vegetarian for years previously… I’ve donated and supported PETA so much. I seriously can’t believe this. It’s repulsive, and I feel personally offended. Atleast it will benefit the animals i guess... but seriously. The media continues to throw homosexuality around and portray our lives as being a complete joke. And now animal rights organizations? Dang.... don't they know how many lesbians are veggies?? There's going to be riots in the street! LOL.

On a lighter note: Go Vegan.

We do make better lovers ;)

Low-Ren-Zo.'s picture

yeh

I would expect this from a car/beer/Tide/whatever commercial, but never from a non-profit org....I understand trying to get new support but the people who generally donate to causes aren't concerned with seeing women, or anyone, make out. There're better ways they could have gotten their point across; this was unncessary.

If thats working to help save animals...

...count me in. Though I'm not quite sure how two women kissing really is helping animals, but I'd say its worth a try.

that's sad that girl-girl is being used on this epidermic contexts and emptiness..
that's sad that people don't have other ways of capture passers-by attention for important issues (and vice versa)

I'm vegan and I hate PETA

PETA is pure misogin and sexism, they use women as objects in their campaings. It doesn't make any sense for me, people then became vegetarians for beauty, sexual health, and this other shits, some months after they forget and restart to eat meat, bullshit.

Women's rights = animals right, and I'll not accept one cause abuse of the other, there is no reason

The animals right moviment was always kept by feminine force, the empathic girls that thinked on the animals pain and suffering for our desnecessary confort. But this reasons are considered idiots at our (patriarchal) society, 'cause, come on, women are considered idiots. Then PETA came trying to change this from the feminine territory and maked the movement acting for a bunch of male chauvinists from the worst species.

Their name  should  SCUM. That's what they have become. You know what.I wouldn't be surprise if more people withdraw their support. Where are the Lesbian Avengers when you need them? Where's Supergirl? Catwoman? Batwoman? Wonderwoman?

I would like to see Queer womyn picket PETA. I need a really good laugh.

PETA is despicable

I don't even consider PETA to be an animal welfare group. They're a bunch of extremists who rely on shock value and intimidation to spread their message, which is far more anti-human than pro-animal. Legit, respectable organizations like the ASPCA do more everyday to help animals than these nutcases ever have.

On the way to the bank last week, my friend and I had to literally elbow our way through a bunch of PETA people protesting outside a clothing store, waving around big posters of dead foxes and blocking the entire sidewalk. After having to duck to avoid three people who tried to shove flyers in my face, I finally yelled "God, I hate hippies!" This tactic seemed to work, as they pretty much ignored us on our return trip.

It's pretty sad when animal

It's pretty sad when animal rights are more important than women's rights. Animal rights are important... but... when did exploiting women become okay? "OH! The beer companies do it and it works for them and no one seems to mind! It should be okay if we do it, too!" WRONG-O.

Fuck, I hate PETA. Ignorant assholes.

Ali's picture

YES!!!

Thank you! I 100% agree with you. I love animals but for me women's rights comes first. Damn those beer companies and PETA.

*Smacks own head on table*

PETA really are starting to bug me now. They epitomise what people imagine animal rights activists to be. Instead of focussing on factual evidence and real animal welfare they run around flaunting gimmicky claims and parrying to the mainstream male audience.

Do they really think anyone would turn vegetarian because two random (probably straight) girls make out on a mattress? Or do they think that they will whip out their camera, laugh and finish their burger?

I stopped believing in the PETA years ago, because I honestly think that they are motivated more by self-interest and publicity than true animal rights anymore, and they never really seem to care who they hurt in the process.

The closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes, but don't be afraid...

Sati_49's picture

exactly

PETA makes all animal rights people look bad!

Cara's picture

Awkward

Although I'm not normally someone who would complain about girls making out, I have to say that this stunt is awkward and unsexy.

I completely agree with what many of you have said, I'm all for animal rights but I really, really don't see how this helps. At all.
And although I will freely admit I don't know all the facts, but I'm sorry PETA, I'll start believing in you again when I see some actual evidence of helping animals directly, instead of over-publicised extremists doing dispicable things like they have done in the past.

rebelzz's picture

I HATE THIS. Hate their

I HATE THIS. Hate their tactics.

Going vegetarian is a very good thing - saves the environment / animals, but they're trivalising / scandalizing / cheapening it.

ARGH.

Sati_49's picture

Sadly im not surprised.

Sadly im not surprised.

PETA long, long ago lost its message. They turned into the fad, the easy group celebs and others could join to say see I care about animals. In actuality PETA causes a lot of harm. When you join for the notoriety and not the cause you don’t really think of the animals first.

I note the cases of PETA members at a protest having a baby cow as a symbol of why we should not eat meat.  After the protest, the members wanted to party so they locked the little baby into its cattle truck and left it there…. All day with no food or water so they could go get hammered. The calf was fine but they ironically enough had animal neglect charges filed against them. They cared more about being part of an image.

This is why I will NEVER donate or join PETA.

And yes I am a vegetarian and animal activist. So no hate mail J
