Wanda Sykes says "I Do" again

Staying true to her pledge to fight for equal rights in the LGBTQ community, Wanda Sykes has teamed up with a California non-profit group that works to educate the public about the importance of equal marriage for all.

Sykes, now on the board of directors for the Equality California Institute, together with the Let California Ring organization, has recently launched a new campaign: “I Do.”

The campaign hopes that through merchandise, supporters of equal rights will spark conversations within their communities.

The merch reads, “'I Do’ Support The Freedom To Marry,” and can be displayed via t-shirt, button, yard sign and bumper sticker. All proceeds go toward marriage education work in California. Check it out at www.supportido.com.

Wanda recorded a short video for the campaign, urging supporters to be “loud and proud," and also wrote a letter on the website:

I do. I do believe in equality for all and I do want to make a difference. When Prop 8 passed, I was heartbroken. As a black lesbian, I already knew there was a lot of ignorance and misunderstanding out there (trust me), but Prop 8 still stung me deeper than I ever thought it would.

She goes on to encourage supporters of same sex marriage to start one-on-one conversations with anyone they can, stressing how important equal marriage is to them:

We all need to talk to our friends, that straight couple across the hall or that favorite cashier at the grocery store.

The merch isn’t the prettiest stuff in the world, but effectively gets the point across: They may have won on 8, but we aren’t backing down.

It’s good to see Sykes fighting the good fight, and let's hope her status and general hilariousness garners more support for the cause.

While I generally wouldn’t wear such a text-heavy tee (I’m all about minimalism when it comes to fashion) I think a button would be lovely on my lapel.

Can displaying your support or disdain for something on your body or property make a difference? Or do you prefer a more on-the-ground approach to activism?

    I love her!

Wanda Sykes decision to come out against Prop 8 was one of the greatest stories of 2008/2009, for me personally anyway! Seeing her come out publically really helped me along the way to coming out ... to myself anyway! but its just babysteps for now :-). She's exceptionally Funny! Please come to the UK Wanda!

    I think that's great but...

I rather support my homestate in equal rights for adoption for LGBTQI Arkansasans as opposed to  California's marriage  for Californians right now. I'm not a Californiain so no I won't be wearing a button. I don't want my money gong towards another state's cause when my state's cause is more important since I live here. Act 1 effected me personally too.  However don't get me wrong, I'm all about equal rights for all everywhere. However, local issues are more important to me right now. Sorry.

show you my support. I couldnt believe when I heard about Arkansas passing that...it just hurt my heart. So that being said I can most def understand wanting to support a local cause and wish you ALL the best in that fight!   :)

    Seriously?

I am very sorry that you feel that way! No one says that you have to spend money on a tin pin, but showing support is just fine. I honestly think that by supporting each state as a whole we can better all of our lives, not just Californian's or citizens of Arkansas. We need to support each other as U.S. citizens, or we won't be able to gain any rights whatsoever.

So, no, don't waste a dollar on a pin, but at least say "Wow, that is great that Wanda is trying to stick up for every gay and lesbian out there, not just Californians". It all starts with one. One state, one person, one I do. Just one.

    TO Ali

I agree with  you Ali. I am glad Wanda is being frontwomyn of Prop 8. I'm tired of saying hey this celeberity is doing great in suppporting this cause... when in fact I just said that in another article. Unlike, California, a lot of states like FLa,AZ,AR and now KY, do not major celeberities to back them up. I agree with supporting LGBTQI rights across the states but also across other issues besides marriage in the LGBTQI community. Unfortuntely, both the mainstream media and LGBTQI media solely focuses on California's marriage prop 8. Other states get one line attention or a paragraph or two in  those news stories.

I'm not on here to put a damper on any AE.com writer's news story. I understand the purpose of this article b/c Wanda is now an out lesbian activist and comedian. The focus go to her. I support the little people out there fighting for causes too. It's one of the main reasons I decided years ago not to pursue Entertainment journalism as a career b/c of some many other non-celeberity  activists that I have met along the way have done a really good job actually and physically change things.

My previous comments last night  was in  no shape or form an insult or a dis to any major celeberity;it is merely another pov and enlightenment. I'm trying to bring causes and other issues to light besides the reoccurring and popular ones.

I try not to comment too much on anything on this site b/c of negativity and misunderstandings and low comprehension levels of certin viewers/readers.
