Margaret Cho writes a song for Miley CyrusA picture spoke well over a thousand words for Miley Cyrus this week, who has taken quite the public beating after an obviously racist (or at the very least completely ignorant) photograph surfaced.
The picture features Cyrus and friends slanting their eyes, seemingly an attempt to mock the only person in the group who isn’t involved in their game of “goofy face” — an Asian man. The photo sparked outrage from fans, the general public and Margaret Cho.
"In no way was I making fun of any ethnicity!" Cyrus wrote in her blog. "I was simply making a goofy face. When did that become newsworthy?” She went on feeling sorry for herself and accusing the media of turning her into a “bad girl.” Well, Cho saw the photo and thinks Ms. Cyrus is full of it. Pissed off by Cyrus' obvious ignorance followed up by denial of such ignorance, Cho decided to write a song about the incident. I personally think it's far superior to any of Miley’s songs. Here goes:
I am hoping Cho takes to the stage with her ditty, since history has proven Cho’s angry protest songs to be pretty fabulous. If Miley isn’t scared of Cho, which she probably should be, she may be a bit frightened by the lawsuit she was slapped with on Thursday.
A woman filed the class action suit claiming to represent more than 1 million people of Asian Pacific Islander descent in the Los Angeles area who were offended by the photograph. The suit says Cyrus “had actual knowledge that her conduct was in fact a form of racism” and asks for $4 billion in damages. While I don’t think a $4 billion payout is necessary, the bratty pop star should learn a thing or two from this whole ordeal. Maybe Margaret Cho needs to sit her down and give her a talking to. What do you think of the Miley Cyrus racist photo debacle? Submitted by on February 13, 2009 - 10:00am. |

She's not smart...
By Britney road you mean
By Britney road...
By "the Britney road" I mean, chewing gum, trucker hats, cut off jean shorts, quickie marriages, basically acting like a 16 year old for the rest of her life.. Now don't get me wrong I love Britney. She really is my girl and I have been a fan since day one. And it's not her fault that things like that happened to her. It was because she had people around her more interested in fame as opposed to her actual well being.. Sorta like *cough* Billy Ray Cyrus and a 20 year old underwear model *cough*. I think that anyone with eyes can tell that Christina certainly transitioned into adult stardom much better than Britney did.. And I just feel like Miley is going down the Britney road.. Sorry just my opinion.
I was too young to love
I was too young to love X-tina, I was scared by the assless chaps :(
Now I wish she *had* that phase for me to enjoy at my age. Now she's a mommy and I'm happy for her.
But still, I loved that stage, pre-nervous breakdown.
Miley is 16 and teenagers will do stupid things* I was and is currently living with one*, but here's the thing: She's a public figure!!!!!! When you are a public figure, people keep a close eye on you. Whatever you do will be judged, so she's going to have to face it. Fair or not, that's judgement is up to each of us. Everyone is different which is clearly illustrated by this thread. So whatever she gets from this, I hope she learns *from this* and that people keep an eye on you, so try to keep that *ish* to yourself!
Plus I don't think people commenting on this are upset*angry*, I would seriously consider getting off the computer if it had come to that over this. My sensibilities is so frigile that I get upset about a blog about a not so *talented* pop teen sensation!!!! Please, I always find it interesting people assume the emotions of others behind the computer. Tone, context? Try saying what you wrote out-loud to see if you sound angry.
"I'm not yelling, this is how I talk!"
Heh.
Yeah.. well luckily I was
it
UH HUH
I know that Miley's
I know that Miley's actions in this situation are not acceptable under any circumstance, However she is a kid. She likely doesn't realize the magnitude of each move she makes. If she were a normal kid in school (which I know she isn't) she would be put in detention and sent home to be punished by her parents. What she has done is very wrong but young people aren't always the moral compass we would like them to be (even celebrity saints). If everyone were born with the innate ability to do no wrong, we wouldn't need laws to protect them.
Dying to say this to you
that argument is crap and
that argument is crap and you know it. at 16 i knew what racsim was. i knew the magnitude of things like, slanting your eyes....it's really insensitive at the very least and overly racist at the worst.
i even knew and was aware of this at 13 and younger. it's common sense is what it is. you can grow up in the most predjudiced household, but as long as there is tv and the internet one can discern was is racially offensive, or has the potential to be. the girl did a dumb thing...a really racially insensitive dumb thing..... and i believe she knew it and most likely didn't care. it's easy to convince yourself you aren't doing anything wrong so long as you're having a good time.
so don't make cop out excuses for this girl. it's insulting.
"In this prison, booty, was more important than food. Booty. A man's butt. Booty...havin some booty was more important than drinkin water. I like booty!"
~FleeceJohnson
I am hardly making excuses
I am hardly making excuses for the girl. I am simply saying that I remember being young and making bigger mistakes than this indiscretion. Obviously it is innapropriate in any climate but I don't see where everyone gets off judging a 16 year old girl for acting stupid for one night. No one here knows what their conversation consisted of before this shot was taken, or if someone does please share with us.
Bottom line, it sucks that one 16 year old's photo can offend and trigger such an emotional response from so many people. I hope that she will apologize. In saying that, I still firmly believe that she is entitled to make mistakes.
Dying to say this to you
Insensitive, but not racist
She shouldn't have done it, because she knows she is a public figure. And I can see how it offends people. But just because something is offensive does not mean it is racist.
Racism: noun
hatred or intolerance of another race or other race
What Miley did was none of these. She was not saying that Asians are less intelligent, or less worthy, or that they couldn't come to her shows, or that she hated them. She was simply making fun of a physical trait. Not funny, in my book, but not racist.
By the comments here, it appears that this sort of thing happens more often than it should. So, why is it worth monetary damages when Miley Cyrus does it but not when the guy at the QuickMart does? Do people really care so much more what Miley does that they are so much more hurt by her actions that they need monetary compensation? If that's really true, they need to get their heads on straight and realize that they shouldn't base their self-worth on what one 16 yr old pop star does.
Correction: Insensitive AND racist...
Actually, I'm not sure where you got your definition, but this one comes from the Oxford English Dictionary (i.e. THE dictionary):
racism: (noun) 1. the belief that there are characteristics, abilities or qualities specific to each race. 2. discrimination or antagonism toward other races.
I'd have to conclude that however intentional or unintentional, her actions were indeed racist. By your definition, wearing blackface wouldn't be racist--and in my book, it's REALLY racist.
I keep seeing the argument that there is an Asian guy in the photo-so-it-must-have-been-an-inside-joke, and this doesn't really fly either. Again, if there was an African-American guy in the picture and everyone else was in blackface, would that make it okay? No. Or what about one of the Crown Princes of the UK who went to a party in a Nazi uniform? We didn't know the circumstances of 'why', but it's wrong, anyway you cut it. Do I think that this Miley person's transgressions are tantamount the the prince's? No. But it shoots the previous definition of racism down.
This is reminiscent of the (several different) groups of atheletes who took photos making the same racist gestures (usually in front of the Great Wall) at the Olympics in China. All very sad.
It's not about maturity
I also find it very, very hard to believe that Miley Cyrus could not know that this is an offensive and racist gesture--kids are actually quite smart and attuned to such things a lot earlier than their teens.
But it offends me more that when so many people pointed it out to her, she didn't apologize. She actually argued that she wasn't doing something wrong!
Now that's much worse. Anybody can make a mistake, and though I don't think an apology undoes hurt feelings, it at least shows that you understand you screwed up. But to respond so defensively as she has is to say, "All you Asian people I offended--I don't care about your feelings. I don't care about you, and I don't think you're worthy of respect." And in some ways, that's much worse. Or it indicates that she really knew what she was doing, and meant it.
How hard is it to say "I was at fault and I'm sorry for the pain this has caused"? Really, we should all have learned that in kindergarten.
Neices
My neices think this child walks on water, and that is the only reason I read anything linked to her name. I couldn't care less otherwise.
The fact that she keeps appearing in articles such as this has caused some concern for me. She is photographed in ways I would never want to see my nieces or anyone else I care about at that young age. I mean really, 15 and looking freshly f'ed is messed up! Then she is consistently photograhed hanging out with a 20 yr old model and we are supposed to assume she speaks the truth about abstinence.
This latest is just another idiotic step down that slippery slope that is going to land her in the category with Paris Hilton....famous for being famous and nothing more. Cheap and shallow are the adjectives I have for her today. I do wish she would do something to change opinions...for the sake of the young girls watching her every move if not for her own good.
Just curious...
It was down right idiotic for Cyrus to deny the fact she was making fun of the Asian community. Furthermore, it pisses me off that she's sitting at home feeling sorry for herself. Kid you screwed up and you got caught now deal with the repercussions.
But I also feel like people are being extremely hypocritical with this entire situation. I love Marget, but she is the last person who should be reprimanding someone for making fun of Asian people. That's like Chris Rock scolding Lisa Lampanelli for making fun of black people, it just doesn't make sense.
Everyone at some point should be held accountable for their actions, but when I heard about this woman suing Cyrus my first thought was here we go again. So you're telling me that this chick has never made fun of anyone in her life? I'm sorry but that crap doesn't fly with me
Before we point the finger, here's some food for thought. How many photos do you have at home that could be considered offensive? How many times have you made fun of someone's size, race, sexuality, or personal flaws?
"You either want them or you don't! Taking longer to decided is not going to make a difference!"
RE: Just Curious
She may have made fun of people too...however two wrongs don't make a right and racism is racism. Shit can't be excused just because you've also done wrong.
"That's like Chris Rock scolding Lisa Lampanelli for making fun of black people, it just doesn't make sense."
I'm sorry but why not? I don't excuse anyone from making hateful comments no matter my or anyone else's history of jokes or othewise. It's like saying I can't speak out against the hatred of the KKK b/c I once called some lady "fat". WTF?
*And no I am not comparing Miley Cyrus/Lisa Lampanelli to the KKK ...christ before somebody jumps on that.
RE: Just Curious
"She may have made fun of people too...however two wrongs don't make a right and racism is racism. Shit can't be excused just because you've also done wrong."
Two wrong don't make a right and I agree you should never excuse people from doing wrong. That was not the idea behind my message. I'm simply stating that before we all get on our high horses and judge someone we might want to take a look at our own past indiscretions.
"I'm sorry but why not? I don't excuse anyone from making hateful comments no matter my or anyone else's history of jokes or otherwise. It's like saying I can't speak out against the hatred of the KKK b/c I once called some lady "fat". WTF?"
You are talking about two different forms of discrimination. You can certainly speak out against racism. But I think many people would have a hard time backing you up, if you yourself chose to make fun of that same group of people. Do you see where I'm going with this? That's like me (who happens to be a bigger woman) making fun of other fat people then expecting people to back me up when I jump on Howard Stern's case for disrespecting fat people. That is completely illogical and dare I say extremely hypocritical.
"You either want them or you don't! Taking longer to decided is not going to make a difference!"
What a shame...
I don't think a lawsuit is
I definitely find
I definitely find this funny because she's what? A 15-16 year old girl with little wisdom in the adult life and she's being shoved into it all because of some photo where she's making a face. I really do think people need to lighten up. I agree with the woman above me (Amy Jo); everybody in their life at one point or another has offended or made fun of somebody else (whether in your thoughts, words, or actions). You'd be lying if you said you didn't.
She's a teenager. That's what teenagers do. Most teenagers have no repercussions whatsoever; but she's a celebrity, so of course everything she does gets scrutinized.
I think people should be more focused on the fact that she looks completely blazed in this photo, in terms of being an idol, rather than her idiotic faces.
However, I do hope she learned her lesson not to make fun of people from now on. Although, that does seem unlikely.
completely agree
at the end of the day she's still just a kid. I will in no way vouch for her. I definitely am not a cyrus fan in any way, shape or form, and I think the fact that she's risen so fast to stardom can only mean an eventual rapid decline. At any rate, people will always do something offensive, I've done my fair share of offensive things back in the day. So yes, lets hope she's learnt something from this.
I do like Cho's song though... funny gal.
~The whole world will tell you who you are, until YOU tell the world!
Stupid
Well, she pissed off the Cho, I would be scared if I was her. Cuz Cho is not the person you want to make mad. Idiotic kid, this is what you get when you're stupid and famous, and this one who just happens to be a rolemodel for millions of other kids. Nice, just nice. The whole photo deal, i know it might be offensive, but racist is a bit of a stretch. She's a public person and obviously she should have some sense of takt. I really see this as one of those stupid/lets have some fun moments, it's not meant to be offensive. I don't think she did the right thing in denying it though, that's the worse part for me, she should have said it was wrong, apologised and said it wasn't meant as an offense. The photo was stupid, she was stupid for defending it and now she's paying for it.
"Blackmail always works better then bribery."
I think that pic had some herbal inspiration.
Is it just me or do they all look completely baked in that picture? I can just see the scenario now. She's in a cipher sparking a bowl when they start doing stuff that seems incredibly funny at the time. The only difference is she's famous and there's a camera.
No doubt it was racist as hell but I also think that she's only getting so much flack because her participation in making America's youth stupid, Disney-consuming automatons sets her up to be an easy target to hate.

Shoulda thought...
I understand that Miley is
I understand that Miley is just a kid and it may have been a stunt that went wrong however on the flip side she influcences thousands of teens and tweens, whether she wants it or not she is a rolemodel. When you are involved with anything to do with the teenage market you have to be soo careful about your image.
One word....redneck
As posted above, she knew what she was doing, and she was probably under the influence, so wasn't thinking. But defending it and not owning up was the worst part. It was racist, though she was too ignorant to know that. She's young, rich and spoiled. Her father isn't one for morals... so... not surprised.
There's a cure for ignorance, and this is a good age to teach her. It's called education. I think rather than being sued for some stupid amount of money to litigants who can't technically be located she should be forced first to sensitivity classes, then to donate some time to the Asian American community. While doing that she needs to locate an Asian cause/community based non profit she should donate to - and she needs to understand what they're doing and where the money will be going. Aside from that, if anyone deserves a settlement, it would be the young man they're mocking. He looks like a fan, and can you imagine how hurtful it must be to see your idol mocking you in such a way? That would probably be the best idea I could put forward for this.

People are seriously mad
People are seriously mad over this??
This is stupid. Kids all over the world do stuff like this, and its no big deal, its funny. But when a celebrity does it, its huge news? "She should be a better role model" you say. No, she's young and she should live her life just like the rest of us.
Stuff like this should be taken with a grain of salt.
I'm seriously amazed at the outrage this has caused....wow.
Amen
I completely agree with you. I was beginning to think I was the only one who thinks this has been completely blown out of proportion.
Has it escaped everyone's attention that there's an Asian kid in the photo? Who knows what the conversation was right before the pic was taken? It obviously doesn't bother the kid who was there so I really don't see how it should bother everyone else.
really! how can they not be mad
Thank you.
Thank you. You took the words right outta my head.
Everybody has the right to their own opinion but it makes me sad to see that some people think it's 'stupid to be mad over this'. It just goes to show you how firmly ingrained tolerance of sublte racism, and even some forms of outhright racism, is in society. Having to deal with subtle racism in comments, jokes, even glances on the street everyday of your entire life isn't all the fun and games it sounds like.
My point is that its only
My point is that its only racist if you see it as racist.
Otherwise its just a face.
Why does everyone extort everything into a huge deal? Just because she's got her eyes pulled back you immediately assume thats she's racist and she's putting down asians. She could just be totally blazed and it was the first thing she thought to do before the picture was taken. Who knows? I just hate that everyone expects the worst out of people. She's a teenager messing around with friends. Oh well.
I completely agree with
I completely agree with you. There are truly some HATERS in this world. What I'd like to know is who had the time to start this outcry??? Was it the Asian guy in the photo? Probably not, right? He probably thought it was funny too because when you're that age things like that are funny (whether us older, wiser, holier-than-thou types agree or not). The fact that people would seriously put so much energy and effort into attacking this kid is laughable. We have the most litigious society in the world. Someone really rallied a group of people to shake-down a kid for $4Billion over a photo? Of all the things Asians have endured from this country, this is the big one? WOW Folks! That's real. I seriously doubt that she took this photo to be racist. I honestly hope that she has enough people in her camp to verse her in the b.s. inherent to this business and to encourage her to brush the dirt off her shoulders. FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T LEARNED IN THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD: HERE YOU HAVE IT, FOLKS - COMPLETE AND UTTER BITCHASSNESS!!!!!!
And PS.
For those that may want to retort with comments about how I am insensitive to the plight of minorities, please slow your roll. I am in no way trying to discount or minimizes the discrimination suffered by any minority group (Hello Homos). I am a black, lesbian with an Asian girlfriend (whom I love and respect very much). I know discrimination well. I still think this is absolute b.s. and completely thrown out of proportion. And my girlfriend agrees :-)
You are wise.
Eh...
Personally
4 million just isn't neccessary, but I do think she needs to be reprimanded in some sort of way.
I slightly agree with Kels here. While I don't think Cyrus is a very smart girl and lacks quite a bit of common sense, I too am quite surprised how much outrage this has caused. I'm not saying her actions were at all okay, but 4 million is a little much.
Okay...
suing?
The only reason they are suing a 16yr old is because they know she has money. Yes, what Miley did was unacceptable especially as she is a public figure and role model to young girls, however suing her is a waste of time and energy, what's done is done. She obviously isn't a racist otherwise she would not be sitting next to the asian boy, it just seems like friends messing around that has gone wrong. Like the inside joke got out.
I love this record baby but I can't see straight anymore.
The asian kid in the pic
The asian kid in the pic is doing a "white eyes" impression! Racist!

*Looks for the irony*
Nope not there.
*looks closer*
Wait.... How did I not see it!?!
Ha.
It's spins!
omg
That was my exact reaction when I first saw the picture!
hahaha
"Stacey Merkins is a fu**ing c*nt! Say it say it say it!"
This is outrageous!!!
* lmao!!!!! *
4 million in damages?? I agree they are just suing her because she has money but seriously, I see I am not alone in this one. Why attack the girl? only because shes famous?...chances are if any of us would be making those faces none of us will get out arses sued. ( and I believe we have/had more than one 'racist' picture around =P ).
This is too funny seriously, will money set Miley straight? haha.Nay. If you look at the pic they are all obviously under some kind of influence .They were just having fun for chrissakes!shes old enough to know what shes doing.
Those that are suing her should grow up, let her be, shes human after all and a teenager!
*dies with laughter*
People seriously.
Oh before implications give way to accusiations I am in no way saying its alright to be 'racist' but then again I dont see racism there at all, just a pic after a bowl? Get moi?.
Let it Rock,Let it roll
Who
is Miley Cyrus?
There is nothing to defend her. I find her age, possibly high on some substance, and the fact that there was an asian guy in the photo irrelevant.
She is either racist or extremely stupid to pull a stunt like this. I'm thinking probably both. She has made it even worse by trying to make it out as nothing.
this is stupid.
they look more drunk than anything. I mean, it's a poor choice out of the arsenal of silly faces, but i don't think she intended to be racist doing that. The two dudes behind her look high as well, and the asian guy just looks surprised, like he's trying not to look high.
If it was intended to be racist, the fact that there's an asian guy present shouldn't excuse it. It's like something thinking they can say 'nigga' just because their best friend is black, and things like that might be fine in a small group of people, but when something like that is done in public or a photo is leaked, your friends look racist and you look like an Uncle Tom.
And anyway. Everyone past first grade knows that the 'asian face' requires that you slant your eyes upward.

Racism against the Asian community.
"Why is there nothing that Asians can do?
To make fun of other races as easily as you
Why isn't racism against Asians taboo?
Why are we always so racially screwed!"
I can only speak from my own experience, but I think that Margaret Cho is absolutely right in that Asians get screwed when it comes to society's reaction against racism directed towards the Asian community. The words chink, chink-eyed, chinky, nip, ching chong, etc. are used so casually and are so commonplace that I never hear people raise objection (except from the occasional Asian who has the courage to speak up and take offense, almost never other races/ethnics). If you insult a black person, you get SO much flack, which is good, but so many other races are excluded from that "protectiveness" of being politically correct. As Cho says, why isn't racism against Asians as taboo as it is for racism against black people or other races? I don't think it's fair at all and I'm tired of there being different standards and hierachies of importance of reaction, public or personal, in regards to race and racism.
As for the lawsuit, I don't think it's about money at all. I don't know much about American politics and law, but they're probably just trying to send a message. Miley Cyrus is a public figure who holds a major influence over an impressionable demographic. Her fans are usually... what... 8-20? Twelve-year-olds seeing their hero making racist faces in the media and thinking it's just a "goofy face" and that it is an acceptable thing to do can be quite dangerous for people so young and susceptible to socialization. As Cyrus says herself, it's just a "goofy face"! So looking like a chink-eyed Asian is goofy. Goofy may seem like an innocuous adjective but it holds a negative connotation and I personally would not like to be described as having a "goofy face". Maybe it's not fair that we put a moral responsibilty on her to act like a decent human being, but that's the price that should come with fame. And with being a decent human being.
People like Miley Cyrus are one of the reasons there is a cosmetic surgery to make Asian eyes more westernized. There is a surgery where you can actually cut your eyelids to crease them and make the shape of your eyes more round.
*takes a breath* Sorry for the rant. It's fustration that has been building within me for a very long time. Racism, subtle or outright, is still very present in society today and it sucks.
Charlie Chan is NOT dead
I completely agree with your self-entitled "rantings." I am taking a breath with you. I absolutely agree with Cho that Asians get racially screwed! Racism, no matter how subtle, is still Racism.
The "goofy face" comment put me over the edge... Why are people defending her ignorant actions and statements? Are we supposed to just roll over and laugh this off? Well, you know, we're Asians...we're not supposed to make a fuss about anything. Why don't we just collectively bow our heads, look the other way, and pretend that this untoward behavior didn't happen and let these *unmentionables@#$%* f*ck us over again and again.
Unfortunately, Miss Jessica Hagedorn, Charlie Chan is NOT dead. I'm stepping outside to breathe.
Seriously?!
People do dumb stuff, I seriously doubt that she had any racsist intentions when she did it. She was just jokin around with her friends and havin fun, and I'm pretty sure the asian guy with them didn't take it offensively. I'm half Chinese & I lived in China for 10 years, and i didn't take it offensive at all.
People need to chill out!! $4billion, is that lady serious? that's ridiculous. It's all just an excuse to get money. The Asians were offended and they want money? I feel like when ur offended what u want is a GENUIEN appolygy from the person who offended u, instead of some materialistic thing.
I have to say, I'm with the
I have to say, I'm with the people who are baffled that this has become such a huge deal. She's with a bunch of friends being an idiot. If my friends and I got sued everytime we got together and said stuff that might offend people we'd be bankrupt 10 times over. It doesn't mean we're being malicious, we're just joking around.
Now, I can't claim to know the context of the photo, but it seems just as likely that it come out of some form of joking with the Asian guy as it does that all the white people decided to be incredibly racist behind the guys back then flash the photo around where it could become public.
That said, when it became obvious people were offended, she should have apologised.
Is it just me...
Or are Miley's eyes even more slitty than some so-called "chinky eyes"? Just saying.
And I think the lawsuit is just something to teach her a lesson so she gets scared and doesn't do it again. I mean, who could sue and win $4 billion in any lawsuit?
Got a style to flaunt? What do you wear or say to attract other women? Show it off in the 'What should be the lesbian indicators?' thread under Surveys and Questionnaires! Do it!
The American Way
I can completely understand Miley's reaction in denying that she had been committing an act of racism. Denial is a common reaction in children (especially spoilt ones) when confronted with evidence of wrongdoing - who wants to 'fess up and face punishment when you might be able to get away with it?
To me, what is far more appalling than any racism, intentional or otherwise, on Cyrus's part, is the woman who filed the lawsuit against her. I equate people like that with opportunistic pathogens, ready and waiting for the slightest opportunity to sneak in and spread their disease. Does anyone seriously believe that woman is suing Cyrus for any other reason than greed? This culture of 'sue first, think later' makes me sick, and I find it very sad that political correctness (or treating everyone equally and with respect) is making it easier and easier to litigate.
Alright...alright...
