Kate Moennig misses ShaneWe have all had our share of not-so-nice things to say about The L Word over the years. Our frustration mostly centered on the storyline (oh, Ilene) but for the most part, we all miss it, or at least some of its stars. I started watching the show a little late — late enough to not want to jump on the Shane McCutcheon bandwagon — but I could not help myself. Now, I miss the skinny and scandalous Shane, and I’m not the only one.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Katherine Moennig, now playing doctor on CBS’s Three Rivers, admitted to missing the role that made her every (OK, almost every) lesbian’s dream. She seems to be missing her former make-out partners as well — big shock there.
Moennig said:
We loved the debauchery, too, Kate; but could have done without the whole Shenny situation. Don’t worry — it wasn’t your fault. When the paper asked who her favorite onscreen make-out partner was over the years, Moennig plead the fifth at first, but the truth came out later in the interview: I remember one time we all sat there and we tried to count how many people our characters had been with on the show. It got to me and I think I was up to 30 on camera? Or maybe a little over 30? I have a couple of favorites, all for different reasons. I loved working with Rosanna Arquette. She was amazing. And I loved working with Sarah Shahi, she and I connected very well. It would be a tossup between those two.
She also admitted to being as perplexed as we were about the show’s ending: I think it was a surprising way to end the show, definitely. . . . There was a reason behind it — I'm not too sure what that reason was, but I'm told there was one. If my favorite show ended that way I'd be like, "What?!” As much as we may still dwell on The L Word, Moennig knew it was time to move on and was scared of being pigeonholed as Shane — hence her new role as Dr. Miranda Foster on Three Rivers. She admitted several things to the Times about the new role.
For one, the long locks she’s been sporting are not real: There was a lot of talk between extensions and a wig; finally we decided to just get a really good wig. There are days when I can't stand it, but I also really like coming to work, putting it on, doing my job, taking it off, and then going home and being me.
Also, her character’s “hot temper” will be rearing its head soon: I mean, I really hope we get to explore the personal lives of these characters and get to know what makes them tick. The cast is so great, and it would be amazing to see them outside the hospital and see what they do when they go home and see what demons they have. Oh, Sarah Shahi
Posts about The L Word always make me want to rant but then Kate mentions Sarah Shahi and...what was it I wanted to say?
In weird news, Three Rivers is becoming a refuge for women who once played gay on television: first Kate, then Janina Gavankar (Papi) and now, I just read, Tamara Braun (Reese, AMC).
We'll see if the show makes it that long, though. The ratings have been abysmal (lower I think than Viva Laughlin if you remember that train wreck) and, honestly, I'm surprised it's made it through two episodes.

There weren't a lot of details in Nelson Branco's column but I imagine she's doing a guest slot like Janina did last week.
I'm happy that she's getting primetime work. Hopefully she (and Eden) stay away from the sinking ship that is All My Children.

There's a big difference between 'annoying FANS who can't tell the difference between Kate and her character' and 'Kate missing her character'.
Just thought I'd point out that distinction since it seems to be lost on some people around here.

Of course, maybe it's hard to break a strong first impression, and she certainly did that as Shane. Still, it just doesn't feel authentic.
I miss Shane too
I miss Shane so much! And I really don't think that the name Miranda fits Kate at all. I am really happy that she still has her beautiful hair still. She is way hotter as Shane.

man i agree with you so much on this alex guy! channel 10 is really pushing the fact that he is an aussie on an american show but hes not great, not deserving of the time he gets on the ads. in aussie ads he is the only character that is shown. kate is only shown in the title shot when they say when it is. very dissappointed with 10

He really is that horrible of an actor. This isn't the first show where he's been the lead and sucked at it, but CBS are determined to make him a star, whether he's got the talent or not. :P

I am a totally tibette fan but I love shane and kate played her so well. I miss how wonderful she was with her friends and how funny she was. You seem to miss things when they are gone, maybe the same for kate and I am sure its the same for all the other L word girls. After playing a role for 6 years, it would be pretty hard just to stop.

I loved Shane mostly because Kate played her so well. Haven't seen the new show but judgingby the reviews I'm not missing much.
Also I really love that one of her favorite ladies to kiss was Sarah Shahi. I like to think that "we had a connection" means we had lots and lots of hot sex off camera...what was I talking about?

me thinks Kate is passive aggresive...on twitter and her twit pics, if anyone mentions SHANE, she freaks and takes it down...me thinks she protesth to much as they say. Now she misses Shane? I don't believe it for a minute.

Kate liked the character of Shane and misses her.
HOWEVER - Kate is not her character, nor does she answer anyone who calls her by that character's name. Because, hey, wonder of wonders - she's not Shane. I think some people forget that those guest spots on This Just Out were meant to be satire. Namely satire of the deluded fans who can't (or refuse) to respect the fact that Kate is Kate and Shane is Shane. Kate is real. Shane is fictional.
Kate misses the character. I can't blame her for not wanting to let fans muddy the reality waters by calling her 'Shane'. Because that's NOT HER and it's not healthy to encourage those beliefs, because - again - they're not reality. Down that path lies stalkers and weirdos and all sorts of other nastiness.

..It's nice to hear she misses TLW, crazy as it got towards the end, I kinda miss it too.
As far as Shane is concerned, after much debate me and my friends have come to the conclusion that the majority of L Word viewers either want to sleep with Shane or be Shane. I was reluctant to admit it at first, but I have to say it would be pretty cool to be Shane for a day... pre-Shenny, that is.

I agree with a lot of you in that I don't think the show will last a full season. It's really that bad. Oddly enough, Miranda Foster seems 10 times gayer than Shane ever did.
Dr. Foster doesn't walk like a girl, she has a swagger.. hands in pockets, walks with shoulders. Yep, GAY!
As much as I bitched about ICs horrible writing and butchering of characters, I really do miss the show. They really should consider an L-word franchise, like all of the Law & Order shows. I'd watch.

I was actually really glad to get rid of The L Word, what with the way it was wrapping up. But I miss Shane!!! And I don't think I can stomach a straight Kate on TV, it just doesn't seem right... :P And that hair... *shudder*

Haven't seen Three Rivers yet but it looks like I'm not missing much.
So, for you haters of Kate Moennig and/or Shane, what's your take on the consensus that the Shane character made being a lesbian "cool" or "in"? I've had this discussion with other people (straight and gay) and the general consensus was that it wasn't so much TLW as it was Kate Moennig's character of Shane with the hairstyles, wardrobe, attitude, etc. What's your view?

Yep. But is was at the end of S3 that still pisses me off! Shane lost her freakin' mind and left Carmen at the altar. WHO would do that??? STUPID!!!

Yeah I thought so too! Her hair in episode one literally made me cringe. Episiode 2 was a definite improvement. I just keep hoping they'll let her put it in a ponytail or something. That perfectly curled and styled do just doesn't mesh with who I imagine her character to be.
What I don't understand is what exactly was wrong with Kate's own hair?

I love the misses these top execs make when changing things on the show they think matters to us viewers. Like Kate's hair, I'm glad she can take it off at the end of the day. But did you notice that she's sporting the new (fake) locks but her ID badge hanging off her dr's coat shows her regular style? Nice.

It's hard not to miss Shane...one of the most definitive lesbian characters ever and sexy as hell...I miss The L Word too, it's hard knowing there's no more of it to see, even with all the times it felt like a let down...
I'm excited to see Kate doing something different, I think she's a fab actress and it would be terrible if she was only known for Shane (loving Sarah Shahi in 'Life' too...)

I'd suspect that it would be hard for Kate not to miss Shane. It was a huge part of her life, and a character that she spent years trying to master.
And Three Rivers is hard to watch. It's so...uninteresting half of the time. If they could just make it a Miranda Foster show...that would be greatly appreciated. It's just boring. Like...nothing really seems to happen. And I HATE HATE HATE their little pre-commericial thign where they spend like 10 seconds showing people's faces in different colors.
But i'll watch for Kate.
