Heather West of "Hell's Kitchen" defends Gordon RamsayFollowing his ill-advised tirade on Australian television personality Tracy Grimshaw, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay issued an apology for referring to Grimshaw as a “lesbian” and a “pig.” While many feminists could do without Ramsay, especially after that incident, out Hell’s Kitchen winner Heather West thinks we should give him a break.
For those who don’t remember the controversy, on June 5, Ramsay told a large audience that Grimshaw was "a lesbian," according to the Sunday Herald Sun. Apparently, he didn’t say it in a positive way: When the crowd reacted with gasps, he said, "What? I'm not saying she's a dyke," using a slur for gay women. Ramsay also showed a picture of a woman — who appeared to be naked — on her hands and knees with the features of a pig and multiple breasts. "That's Tracy Grimshaw," he told the audience. "I had an interview with her yesterday. Holy crap. She needs to see Simon Cowell's Botox doctor." In a recent interview, West said the media twisted Ramsay’s words, making it sound worse than it really was:
While being “cool with it” is just fine, it doesn’t exactly mean he’s homophobia-free — and certainly doesn’t excuse his comments. I get the vibe that West has accepted Ramsay’s verbal diarrhea as part of his personality, as many Hell’s Kitchen viewers have as well.
West said: It's just like any rumor that gets started. It's the game of telephone. And however it happened and whether someone twisted it and it got out that way, I can tell you that he never treated me any differently or had any problem with me being a lesbian. We certainly don’t have a problem with West being a lesbian. Unfortunately, she also said that dating has not been going so well for her lately. I just feel like I keep meeting girls who are out of their freaking minds. Especially in LA. Oh my god. I have met some winners here, let me tell you. They’re all actresses too … They are pretty self-centered and they don’t want to get tied down because they always think there’s someone better coming around next.
Something better? Than a super hot, successful woman who can make delicious food? Pshhh. She’s just been dating the wrong ladies. Aside from surviving being single and defending Mr. Ramsay, West, the first openly lesbian winner of a reality TV show, has been keeping busy. She is now cooking at Dish Restaurant in La Canada, Ca , trying to increase her number of Twitter followers and getting involved in more gay events as well. Ramsay may have a foul mouth, but he certainly picked a winner there. Submitted by on July 21, 2009 - 2:00pm. |

Hell's Kitchen
Hell's Kitchen premieres tonight! I'm looking forward to it.
I don't have to like the man to be entertained by him.

I got into it.
Gordon Ramsey is probably going to die of a heart attack some day with all his yelling and carrying on, but I really got into the show one season. It's easy to get hooked. If he is homophobic, I wouldn't be shocked or anything. I don't like him at all.

I love Gordon Ramsay
People take what he says way too seriously. Hell it should be MANDATORY to have a Gordon Ramsay in every restaurant, because my food will be made the right way, in a safe and clean environment. I care way too much about my food to care about if someone curses out the sous chefs, as long as my fish is well done and I walk out satisfied and still kicking days later. I have no objections lol.
Here to defend the Ramsay!
If anyone has watched "Gordon Ramsay's F Word" on BBC, then it would be secondary knowledge to know that Ramsay's definitely not a homophobe, and quite a lovable guy! He has had gay chefs on his show who have hit on him, and he was shamelessly flattered and passive about it.
"Hell's Kitchen" doesn't give provide justice for Ramsay's full personality, and it's not his fault that he has high culinary standards :)
Do yourselves a favor and neglect the train wreck of "Hell's Kitchen".

Yikes! ... Is LA really that bad for finding love?
Gordon Ramsey is a complete misogynist ...
His mistresse's have all stated it ... they said he is obsessed with calling women "pigs". Gordon has continually embarrassed his wife Tana.
Even when he apologised to Australia for his recent behavior - he told a lie (in the apology) saying his mother had severely told him off ... his mother hadn't even spoken to him.
His lesbian contestants have brought him ratings (and he knows it) ... Heather and Rachel (RIP - I still think of her) are probably the two people, viewers most remember (of his American series). As for him "not having a problem with lesbians", he has no choice. In the food industry you can't avoid lesbians!
There are many great chefs out there (who know how to run a kitchen) ... for me Gordon's faults negate how good he might be with food.
I find it curious that Heather is defending him - when her 'prize' for winning didn't seem to be, all that it was made out to be on the show?
Even if he's not a homophobe
If....
He's still a complete arse!
polease
i can't watch that show, why would i wanna watch someone who verbally abuses EVERYONE who crosses his path and he gets paid for it! what da hell America...we pay people to openly abuse others now. man I'm in the wrong gig. as a secretary, maybe i should curse out a few people, maybe then I'll get a raise.
and i swear-an angry, shouting chef in a kitchen full of knives...I'm surprised no one has attempted to cut him yet :-p
while he's clearly...
...playing a little (okay a lot!) more harshly for the cameras i actually applaud his over the top abuse of the cooks on his show. these people are not trained chefs for the most part and if they plan on working in a kitchen for a living they need to understand exactly what they are getting themselves into, and in a lot of places, under a lot of chefs, this is the treatment they would get (again not nearly so harsh, but harsh none the less). i can say this openly and honestly because as an aspiring chef i see it at almost every restaurant i've worked at...
just sayin!
no he's certainly not homophobia-free
I remember when he was in NZ a couple of years ago he had a very obnoxious exchange with a local presenter about "faggots".
So I think he is lesbian friendly cos it suits him financially.
