"ESPN: The Magazine" puts female athletes front and center for its Body IssueBeing athletic never came naturally for me, but I have always appreciated women who excel in sports — specially their physique. The latest issue of ESPN: The Magazine understands this appreciation, and decided to share some seriously hot photos of scantily clad (or nor clad at all) athletes with us. ESPN’s Body Issue hits stands Oct. 19, but four of the six cover options have already made rounds on the web. My personal favorite is the Serena Williams cover — a nude photo of the tennis star in a very strategic pose — to avoid the whole tape-over-nipple scenario, I’m sure.
This is ESPN's first Body Issue, and, rather than take the thong-on-a-beach approach à la Sports Illustrated, the magazine’s editorial staff had one rule: "Please no swimsuits,” NBA star Stephon Marbury told USA Today. Instead of ladies in swimwear, ESPN opted for actual athletes, male and female, in nude and semi-nude photographs — tastefully done, of course. One of the women to grace the cover is mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano, showing of her seriously stunning abs.
The magazine hasn’t released a full lineup of the issue yet, but we know Australian pro surfer Claire Bevilacqua made it inside, and the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Gary Belsky said the athletes have been quite happy with how the photos turned out.
"They're fine. They love their bodies. They trust us,” Belsky told USA Today. “If you look at our covers over the last year and a half, we had Candace Parker pregnant and Michael Crabtree on crutches ... They trust us a lot, athletes. They trust the way we represent them." The magazine expects to field some complaints from more conservative readers about the issue, and it’s pretty impressive they made it work despite being owned by The Walt Disney Company, who Belsky said they were careful not to offend.
“It's going to be kick-ass regardless," he said. Considering what I’ve seen so far, I believe him. Submitted by on October 7, 2009 - 4:00pm. |

Nude. Disabled. Triathlete.
LOVE.
(Always good to see the multisport/endurance community getting some mainstream love. And if that love also involves naked ladies, I am ALL FOR IT.)

Team USA
It's so great to see women with healthy, athletic, REAL bodies. I'll take this over the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue any day. Best part is clearly the Team USA softball girls, including Natasha Watley, Lauren Lappin (who is out), Cat Osterman (who is not...yet), and Jessica Mendoza (who is preggers and looks amazing). Save Softball :)
Taste the Rainbow
Jessica Mendoza was 8 months
Jessica Mendoza was 8 months pregnant when the photo was taken. And I love Lauren Lappin.
This is going to be a great issue of ESPN magazine. Its great that it will be filled with atheletes of all different shapes and sizes to show what real people look like.
Spot on
Yay Lauren!
I love her, she's such a sweetheart.
And yes, I love when athletes bare their bodies-- I honestly feel like there's no sexual objectification or any of that controversy that is more likely to arise with the SI Swimsuit Edition simply because their bodies are their livelihoods, they know what makes them tick. They're powerful, they're comfortable in who they are, and they look fantastic naked. Hats off!
OMG! I didn't realize Serena
same here
I knew she had an attractive athletic body, bot lord I couldnt stop staring at the pic!
WOW
If Serena is on the cover...I'll buy it.
Zuri
WOW!
oh wow. Gina looks sooo hot.
Why is it that magazines dont show women who love and appreciate their bodies on the front of magazines, but women who have low self-esteem, starve themselves and go to all sorts of diet extremes are the ones who get to grace the front covers of magazines? What kind of message are they telling women and girls?
=)
that pic of Gina Carano just made my year lol
