AfterEllen.com's 2009 Gift Guide

Holiday shopping during a recession can be a total bummer. There’s nothing worse than splurging on a gift and seeing it unopened in your BFF’s apartment six months later. With that in mind, I present to you the AfterEllen.com Queer Lady Gift Guide. Whether you’re buying for your butch boo, femme friend or bisexual coworker; we want to help you homo up the holidays.

My personal favorite gift to give on a budget is a book. For the literary lesbian in your life, Trish recommends picking up Terri Griffith's short novel So Much Better.

“[The book] is about a lesbian who is unhappy with her daily routine,” Trish explains. “All she wants is out of her relationship with her drunk girlfriend and something more exciting than her job at a city credit bureau, but she didn't mean to begin a relationship with her girlfriend's 15-year-old sister. It's a great piece of stream-of-consciousness writing where you have a lot in common with the protagonist and her daily ideas and thoughts on living a life that is much more exciting inside her own head.”

Other queer books that will liven up any collection: Sarah Waters' Tipping the Velvet, Cool For You by Eileen Myles and Ash by former AfterEllen.com editor Malinda Lo.

Trish’s gay movie gift pick is Humpday: ”[It] may center around two straight men, but it's one of the queerest films of the year.”

Karman's DVD recommendation is the Shamim Sarif double-feature of The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight, starring Sheetal Sheth and Lisa Ray. "Two beautiful films, two lovely women. You should be able to count it as giving two gifts!"

If you’re looking to splurge (and secretly want to re-watch all of the L Word seasons with your friends) then the L Word box set would not be a bad way to go. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing for the show’s ending.

Other DVDs worth picking up, if they don't have them already: Imagine Me and You (Hornito's pick), But I’m a Cheerleader (total classic), Born in Flames (for the cult movie fan in your life) and D.E.B.S. (AE blogger Jamie says the fact that I haven’t seen this yet is totally ridic.)

If you’re looking to get a little more creative with your giving, the Nikki McClure calendar is a good place to start. I have been Nikki’s calendars for years and still get excited to see a new image each month. Nikki’s beautiful illustrations are cut from a single piece of paper, and each month features a verb meant to get you through the month. The calendars are selling 3 for $40 on buyolympia.com at the moment — and mom will like them too, I swear.

Also for the gay and artsy set, Mia says that Frida Kahlo is always a safe bet. These Mexican mesh shopping bags Mexican mesh shopping bags are earth friendly and super cool.

Handmade, all-natural bath products are the stuff lesbian dreams are made of. The masters of this artform are the folks at LUSH. AE blogger Grace Chu sings their praises: “They are handmade, which appeals to lesbians' DIY ethic. They are not tested on animals, which appeals to lesbians' love of cute furry fauna. They are all about the green movement, which appeals to lesbians' love of the environment. Oh, and they are whimsical and make you smell good, which I guess is the most important factor. Bonus: They have a body butter called ‘Buffy.’”

Still at a loss? Some “seed bombs” would be a good gift for the nature lover in your life. Jayson Home and Garden is selling Midwest flower “bombs” for $9.

Lesbians love whiskey (at least this one does) so boozy gifts never hurt. A bottle of John Powers Irish Whiskey or Makers Mark will impress most lesbian holiday party hosts.

Also, Circa Ceramics makes really rad, out-of-the-ordinary mugs. Fill them with some delicious organic coffee or tea and you can’t go wrong.

Another great way to show the queer lady in your life you care? Charitable donations. Charities have taken a serious hit with the economic downturn, and many of us would gladly sacrifice a $20 gift for a worthwhile cause. The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice works to keep lesbian-led or queer-minded organizations going. One of the foundation’s main missions is to "address the lack of funding for women-specifically lesbians and women of color."

Also, the Human Rights Campaign , Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and the The Point Foundation , which provides financial support to at-risk gay and lesbian students, could all use your support.

What is on your wish list this year?

    HRC?

bleh. not a good choice to give to if you want to support our trans brothers and sisters (they are often content to put trans rights on the back burner if it means getting gay and lesbian rights through. I say we've done enough of leaving the T out of LGBT.) I'd suggest finding a local organization to support. The national groups are doing okay, but in the current economy local activist or service organizations are really struggling. In Boston, I'd really suggest supporting SpeakOUT Boston. They train LGBTA people to tell their personal stories as a form of activism to schools, businesses and churches. Just like Harvey Milk told us to. www.speakoutboston.org

    Awesome!

Hey, that is a great idea! Way to think about the T in LGBT. It's nice to know we're not forgotten! :)

    Non-Profit Orgs>>

Word! Support our trans/gender queer brothers and sisters!

It's for all the reasons you listed that I don't give to HRC but to Lambda Legal.

Here in DC, a great local org to give to is Transgender Health Empowerment (www.transgenderhealthempowerment.org). For other orgs, here are some ideas:

SMYAL (Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League- www.smyal.org) - for our queer and questioning youth

Wanda's Will Project (www.wandaswill.org) - named in honor of murdered, out DC mayoral LGBT aide, Wanda Alston. This is a project for LGBT folks to get their living wills executed. Seriously, we never think about that but it is so damn important. It's so damn important it's a major reason why we're fighting so hard for marriage equality.

Women in the Life Association (www.womeninthelife.com)- social justice for lesbians of color

The Wanda Alston House (www.thewandaalstonhouse.com)- named in honor of DC's girl, Wanda Alston, this is a safe house for LGBTQ youth.

African Wildlife Foundation (www.awf.org). OK- I work here, lol! BUT it's still a great cause. Our office is queer friendly and despite what may be going on in Uganda right now, South Africa is the only country on the continent that allows equal, legal, same-sex marriage. And not for nothing but the African wild dogs and black  rhinos seriously need your help.

    The fact you still haven't

The fact you still haven't seen D.E.B.S. *is* "ridic"!  I've seen most of the movies/shows you have up there (not yet "Born in Flames" or "The World Unseen"), and the only one that I've had to urge to rewatch more than once was definitely this rocking girlspy flick.  Maybe because I first watched it as a teenager myself, maybe because I grew up in the Xena era where we're not afraid of a little campy mixed in with our SRS BSNS GAY, but that's one of the few I've actually gone "Hey, you know what I haven't seen in a while" rather than just happening to see it on my shelf before choosing it to pop in.  Bonus?  I first found it at my generic old suburban video rental place, so while it's old enough that you won't be able to pull it off the shelf at Wal-Mart (like The L Word, which I've seen there), you might not have to order it off of the webs and cough over the s/h.

Where the hell are the sex toys?

I like flaws and feel more comfortable around people who have them. I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.

    I second that!

Babeland in NYC is the place to find that amazing sex toy gift.  It is the gift that keeps on giving and giving!  I feel like all of us would like to have a little gift card from a sex toy store under the tree!

Frida Kahlo. Love her. She's my new second idol (First is Joan of Arc, obvs).

I bought my GF a replica Frida Kahlo painting which cost about $12. I'm not much with the gift giving. I'm making calenders and 'how to' books and the likes. Possibly t-shirts, too.

    BIG FUN t-shirts.

    those mugs are PERFECT!

I am going to get those today.... they are so perfect for us, as we drink our coffee in matching mugs every morning, and she's a writer, and I'm a photographer.

I think I am in love!

Also, she got me a bunch of LUSH soaps and bath bombs last year... scrumptious. I suggest everyone try it.

    Totally recommend

Totally recommend crafts from 100percentcool.com, in fact, it should have been included in the list - they're made by two out girls Inga and Evija. If I'd be living in the US, I'd definitely get some of the  wallets or necklaces for my friends :)
