News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

A men's tailor in the UK uses power lesbians to sell his suits

London-based tailor Sir Tom Baker has been trying to go “viral” with a lesbian advertisement for his tailoring services for weeks now. Unfortunately, the video hasn’t been spreading the way he had hoped, but we think it’s definitely worth sharing.

The video, which is set to a French song that I really need to find, starts out like with hot, barely-dressed, models having a pillow and seltzer fight in a lushly decorated room. Sleazy? Sort of, but I kept watching (and my girlfriend was all “Let me see that!”). The video then backtracks to how this sexy fight began, with the women tearing off each other's three-piece suits.

The ad appears to be for a line of Baker’s suits, which could mean he is attempting to arouse men that would purchase the suits by exploiting lesbians. But, my natural feminist instincts backed off a bit on this. The women look extremely hot in the suits, and their interaction at the end of the video is very gay. Not the kind of gay that generally appeases your average, straight frat boy, either.

Style.com was one of the few sites that mentioned the video, shared their thoughts:

“The effect is a little jolting — as if a Maxim shoot spooled backwards into a k.d. lang video — but if that's the sort of thing you're into, happy Monday, guv.”

You should watch it yourself and see what you think. I think Mr. Baker’s suits are quite nice, but maybe I need to watch again just to be sure.

I'm not sure if it'll sell suits...

     ...but I don't really care...that was hot

I know it's just explotation of woman etc. and as a femnist I should be outraged but as a lesbian I'm just turned on

    I'm a feminist, and I don't

I'm a feminist, and I don't think this commercial is exploiting women.  They're set up as strong, independant ladies, and the ad is kinda tongue-in-cheek, acknowledging the male voyuerism that it's catering to.  It's a fun, cute ad, not offensive or demeaning in any way.  If the sex roles were reversed, it'd be good too (although not as sexy).

    Suits? What suits?

This probably would have been a better advertisement for underwears/lingerie cause I mean honestly...I don't even remember the suits at the end I remember is two things:

    Lesbians

    Lingerie

    Fantastic

I know I've had a fantasy just like this. I think it's a fantastic advert.

    Hot.

Whatever it is that they are selling, I am totally buying.  I love how the video went backwards to show an unexpected begining of the fight.  Hot hot hot!
    Joey's picture

    Nice!

I like the end (beginning?) where they're in power suits more than when they're pillow fighting in lingerie. ;) Hot indeed.

    androg par excellence :)

THat was hot, playful, and adorable ...for this lesbian anyway :) Pretty much my cuppa tea....

Not sure it would set het men alight though. Neither of the women were the stereotypical bait for straight men. Neither had big boobs for a start!

And if u find out the name of the song Jen, let me know :)

i agree!  it was a lot more

i agree!  it was a lot more innocent than lesbian scenes directed at men usually are.

    I liked!

I don't think that it was exploiting, it was set as light and good fun with the french music, it wasn't sleezy or slow motion type that is often used when just appealing to your average hetrosexual 18-25 male and I loved their interactions at the end!! The dark haired girl looked especially good in the three piece!!

    jeepdawg_34's picture

    Holy Bette Porter, Jen!

What is it about beautiful women in tailored suits, cufflinks and sexy undergarments? They are hot is what!!

I, too, liked the lil' interaction at the end.

    Gender bending at its finest!

    No lesbian power suits?!

Ahhhh I need to get proper suits for my upcoming job so I got all excited about this shop, especially since it's like 10 minutes from where I live!

But they don't do women's suits. Psh. Misleading.

If they're gonna put out an ad with women wearing suits they should at least, you know - cater to women wearing suits.

    That was...wonderful.

At the beginning, I can see how it could have been a little iffy, but during the rewind when the blond one tugged on the brunette's pants...well, that's where you got me.

They looked really nice in those suits. And that foot tap was super cute.

    Fine with me

Suits don't do much for me, but like the idea of tearing them off.

    Yum

I love women in tailored suits. I love wearing tailored suits. So that sounds a little weird.

Nevertheless, I liked the commercial. Makes me want to buy one for sure lol.

    svissmiss's picture

would rather see it played backwards (i.e. forwards)

I'd rather see it flow from clothed to unclothed, but I still enjoyed every minute of it. :)

    Hmm, I love that

Hmm, I love that commercial.  Wish there were more like it in here.

    That ad wins

Gee Gosh. I really liked that ad. It was hot in an old-school-English-Draco/Harry-but-girls kinda way... And I didn't find it offensive at all. *watches again*

    suits ad

I like the ad. mind you, some women wears the suits much better than men. actually I haven't met any guys that can carry out a suit as well as someone from my work, seriously!

    That was great!

Speaking as a suit-wearer myself, I think I might well look into getting one of those.

    Suits I mean. Ahem.

    As a lesbian who also

As a lesbian who also considers herself a feminist, I don't see a single thing wrong with this advert.
It starts with women in their underwear. I think it's high time we just accepted that most everyone wears skivvies, and that not all images of ladies in deshabille are exploitative.
There are some, certainly, but lets give the benefit of the doubt for a second.

Neither of these ladies are at all an approximation of the heterosexual male fantasy. The blonde comes close, but even then it's not 100%.
    The brunette? Absolutely not.
The flashing clips towards the portraits and the statues impart a bit of a voyeuristic attitude towards the clip--but at the same time, the first portrait we're shown is of an androgynous/gender bending indivual of indeterminate gender.

As the advertisement scrolls in reverse, we start to see an interaction that becomes less Playboy and fauxbian, and more genuinely lesbian in aesthetic. We start to see some pretty awesome genderbending in the last couple of scenes.

Does anyone really think that if the tailors were advertising by exploiting lesbians, they'd put them in full three piece suits?
    I highly doubt that.

I'll make a broad, sweeping statement here and say that, as a general rule, the people who most enjoy the image of a woman in a men's suit are--- lo and behold, women. I mean, look at our own reactions in this thread. Even the folks who arent sure if they should be offended are sure they really like this ad.
Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich kicked ass back in the day for gender bending in suits--and they were gay women. There's always been that gender bending aesthetic to the suit, and I think this tailor picked that up and ran with it.
Maybe he's even being super-savvy and playing to two markets simultaleously--men of discerning taste and a great deal of disposable income who will appreciate the tailoring of the suit (aka his established customers) and secondly, women in positions of power who see this advertisement, recognize the (power) aesthetic and buy into it.

Personally, I think that this is a brilliant example of subtle, (relatively) tasteful marketing.
Those women, as depicted? Definitely not straight. Their demeanor just doesn't say it.
And wow. Now I want to buy one of those suits.
