Y ask why: "The Last Man" comic goes to the big screen

The massively popular comic Y: The Last Man, written by Brian K. Vaughn and illustrated/drawn by Pia Guerra, is getting the big screen treatment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carl Ellsworth (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xena: Warrior Princess) is on board to write the script and D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) has been tapped to direct.

Although the April 16 issue of Time magazine claims that actresses are nearly an endangered species in many of the movies being produced in tinseltown, a cinematic rendering of Y on the horizon means nothing but work for legions of actresses. I mean — and I don't think this is giving anything away, since it happens within the first couple of pages in the very first issue of Y — any mammal with a Y chromosome perishes, except for one dude, Yorick Brown, and his (male) Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. The cast of billions from there on out is nothing but women as far as the eye can see, and then some more. I for one would love to sit in on the casting calls that'll go out for this one! It's all action and a mad dash for control of the world; countless hidden agendas; backstabbing, both literal and figurative; and women sharing their love with other women.

I have some ideas on who I think would make a striking Agent 355. So lethal, so butch ... so Rosario Dawson. And Dr. Allison Mann, oh, I hope they get Sandra Oh for that part! Hero Brown, sister of the last man, would also be a plum role. I'm thinking Brittany Murphy, but then I have this whole thing for her that I can't explain or quantify or anything at all, really. Who would you cast in a movie where 99.9 percent of the on-screen humans are of the female variety?

Has anyone else been following this comic series? The women-centric dystopic world view is reason enough to check it out, trust me. You can see what all the fuss is about here.

casting

Hmmm...nice pics for casting, but here's how I see it if I were lucky enough to cast this film:

Yorick--Ryan Gosling

Dr. Mann--Lynn Chen (Saving Face)

Agent 355--Sonya Sohn (Kima from The Wire)

Hero--Piper Perabo

"Has anyone else been following this comic series?"

No, but you make it sound like I better.

"a movie where 99.9 percent of the on-screen humans are of the female variety"

okay, I'm sold.

thank you jen from p!

Rollins and Oh are totally

Rollins and Oh are totally my dream cast for those two. Yorick, I'd want something like a John Kraskinski but smaller and maybe a little less knowing. Hero is a mystery to my mental imdb, however.

Love For The Y

I picked this series up pretty early on and suffered through the torture of having to wait a month at a time for my next issue. i always HIGHLY recommend this one to friends who are looking for an adult comic series or something "new" to read. talk about hooked. i am however a bit leary about them turning this into a movie were the possiblity of destroying all that is great about it might happen. plus how can you turn this very complex story into 90-120 min of screen time?? i honestly dont know who i see in these roles right now. im usually the first to jump on the names bandwagon but im just soooo protective of this series that i dont know who i trust to do a great job with this one.

Series

I think they'll be looking toward a trilogy, or more. There's no way to tell this whole story in a single movie. If they try to, well, we'll get so confused within the first two minutes that we won't even be notincing that Hollywood has cast men in the women's roles.
K's picture

ok...well that give me at

ok...well that give me at least a BIT more hope. i could handle it if they did it ala resident evil style where its part of a bigger trilogy. i still dont know if i can get behind this though...im shivering thinking about them killing this...kill painkiller jane fine...kill 30 days of night...ill deal...kill xmen in a slow and painful trilogy...blah...ive gotten over it ...kill this and ill be severely crushed....for a lonnngg time

Well, Y not?

Along with "Gotham Central", that is one of my favorite comic books of all times! They could cast Jake Gyllenhaal as Yorick and Frances McDormand as Dr. Mann. Well, I guess that's why I'm not a casting director...

K's picture

wow....a huge gotham central

wow....a huge gotham central fan along with y the last man....who knew those existed besides me (im still bitter about them "canceling gotham")please tell me you like catwoman or at least runaways and you can have my hand in marriage right now...
Call Me Viv's picture

Renee Montoya rocks!

Catwoman or Runaways? Oh, the pressure! I'd have to find me a copy of those first before I can tell you whether or not you should book the chapel. ;) I like all the Wolverine comics Greg Rucka wrote, though, does that count? And I read through all 52 comics of the "52" series just because I like Renee Montoya so much... And hey, I like the band "Runaways". ;)
K's picture

ok ok...so no chapel

ok ok...so no chapel yet...however renee is in a 5 arc series that is just starting to come out i think revolving around "the question" since obviously she IS the question now. i read about it in my newest wizard magazine. and yeah...renee rocks my world. i read all of 52 for her too (talk about a lot of hype with vey little payoff with batwoman...ive gotten more action in the last year and believe me when i say thats saying a lot..lol).

Batwoman was at home knitting or something

lol, yeah, you're so right about Batwoman. :)

Frances McDormand

While she's not quite as cute as Sandra Oh or Lynn Chen, I have to admit, Frances McDormand is oddly compelling and sexy in her gaunt and nasally sort of way. I don't know what it is. Can anyone explain the appeal of this woman, aside from the fact that she's a darned good actress? One problem, I don't know if she's going to be able to play Asian. I wouldn't mind seeing her try.
Forsakentale's picture

Wait wha...?

Ohh hell yeah! I waited quite some time for Y to have a big chance!

I feel in love with this comic... I started reading it after Runaways was released. Brian K Vaighan, the author, is one of the nicest dude ever. I sent and e-mail, he answered my every single "about your lesbian characters..." question.

Strange thing, I never thought about a casting for it, but wouldn't be bad if they had new faces for some os the main characters.

Nervous

I love this comic. Brian K. Vaughn is probably my favorite comic writer out there right now (Y, Runaways, Ex Machina, Buffy!!!) I'm really worried it will be butchered when it hits the big screen, See: X-Men 3. I'll still be seeing it opening night, mind you, regardless.

When the rumors of the movie first came out Topher Grace was mentioned for the lead and I think he has that nerdy/cool/average thing that would work for Yorick.

Gina Torres for 355 maybe? Lucy Lu for Dr.Mann? she is Hollywood's token asian afterall.

With a cast that full of women there is bound to be a celebrity crush for everyone, I just hope it's made half-decently.

I'm incredibly excited about

I'm incredibly excited about the prospect of this movie being made. I adore the comic.

As for casting, I'd go with:

Yorrick = Ryan Reynolds, whenever I picture a live action version o f the character the image that always comes to mind is Reynolds.

Agent 355 = Traci Thoms, my conviction that Traci Thoms would make a wonderful, totally badass 355 has only been strengthen since Grindhouse: Death Proof, which she pwned. Although I'll admit, I like the suggestion of Rose Rollins. She's a bit more of a straight up hottie than I pictured 355, but Rose can certainly bring the badass and looks good with a gun.

Dr. Mann = Maggie Q, yeah okay that's mostly because I like looking at Maggie Q and I'd get to look at her for a long time in a Y: The Last Man movie, but I think she'd also be alright in the role. Did I mention I like to look at Maggie Q.

Sandra Oh, is also an inspired choice. Sandra delivering "Y"ish dialogue would be a thing of beauty, also we already know that she can play a doctor, lol

Hero = Jennifer Carpenter, I think she's practically perfect for it. Check out an episode of Dexter and tell me if you couldn't see her in the role. Also, I think she looks remarkably like comic Hero.

WILD_CHILDx087's picture

Oh, Joy...

There's no way I can even begin to say how excited I am about this. I love Y! It's in my top five of comic favs for life. Its definitely one of the best written comics ever. I hope they don't ruin it...like they do with so many comic books. It's awesome...practically writes itself. One man in all the world, a kick ass monkey, lesbians, male-impersonating prostitutes...what more can you ask for, lol? Oh, love that cover from "girl on girl" its beautifully rendered. 355/Mann love extra awesomeness. Just read it! Please, excuse my fangirl moment.

Yorrick - Toper Grace (near perfect), Justin Long, Ryan Reynolds.

355 - Gina Torres, Sonya Sohn, Rose Rollins.

Mann - Sandra Oh, Joan Chen (in a perfect world), Maggie Q.

Ampersand - That monkey from outbreak.

I am what I am. Love me or hate me. Just consider me.

Gina Torres

Yes, she (Gina Torres) was on my 355 list along with Sanaa Lathan, thought Lathan could play 355's 'teacher' as well as Torres (if Torres would 'allow' to eventually get her butt whipped, man that's some woman!)

I'm a bit sad. I would

I'm a bit sad. I would prefer they made it into a TV shows. Not sure how the movie will do it justice by cramping like 60 issues into 2hrs.
Tina's picture

It be better as a series

Yeah i totally agree with that. I'm afraid it'll turn into the whole 'serenity' thing. . .just backwords. There is a lot of stuff that goes on in the series (relationship, social, political, gender, etc) that im sure is going to get dumbed down for the big screen. if it comes out i'll be a little weary to go watch it.
trypr's picture

I'm divided...

...like a number of fans, I'm worried that they could easily mess this up as a film. However, I will certainly follow it with interest.

I'd obviously recommend the comic series to anyone here for a number of reasons beyond the legion of ladies involved. It's very intelligent and works to keep you off balance and it's characters just slightly outside the comfort zone you might enjoy. You find yourself sympathising with individuals who's actions you deplore and angry with those you want to love. It elicits a complex emotional response: volume 2 of the graphic novel is one of the hardest things I've ever read and had me tearing through the pages utterly absorbed and desperate for some sort of cosy resolution that would put things right. It didn't come and I've not actually been able to read it again.

The character of Hero left me utterly conflicted because the clever writing in the first volume made me identify so heavily with her and completely floored me when it actually introduced her to the plot. I think she would be an exceptionally challenging and difficult part to play. I feel she is brilliant and terrifying in a very personal way.

The series is extremely topical and astute; it challenges the neat pigeonholes into which society places people caught up in the current political situation and our attitudes and assumptions about morality, ideology and their underpinnings.

katemc39's picture

the monkey

ampersand....i forgot.

I think the choice made to use the monkey from outbreak is good...but I'm thinking more along the lines of the monkey from Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Did you see his death scene after he ate that fig?  The tears....right down my face.  Oscar worthy.

You can forget that monkey from Friends.  He's a total hack.

Hopeless_Savage's picture

Had to happen eventually

Back in the earlier days, Brian K always used to say that if it was made into a series or movie, he'd always imagined Topher Grace in the role. So who knows, the man himself must get the last word after all :-P

Avid Fan very over excited

I've been a huge fan of Y The Last man for a long time.

I could not be more excited about a movie and I really really hope this isn't going to be only rumours and never come to anything.

I'm hoping for a great director too, any ideas?

It needs a brilliant cinematographor, someone with a real vision of the details within the world of Y.

badger2619's picture

I'm not excited about this

I'm not excited about this at all. This comic is genius and film treatment wouldn't do it justice. The story is too complex to cram into 90 minutes. I was hopeful when it was rumored earlier this year that HBO was picking it up b/c it can work in a series treatment. As for casting? It'd be easier to go with unknowns.

serials

Yes, I agree that a serial on HBO or something would be MUCH better.  I mean, it's already in digestable form and pretty much storybooked.   I do love that Ellsworth is scripting it, though.  I could imagine some awful hacks turning it from the dystopian gender examination that it is, back into the stupid fantasy that most men think it's supposed to be.

That said:

Michelle Krusiec or Vivian Wu- Dr. Mann

Ryan Gosling- Yorick

Taraji P Henson- 355

Claire Forlani or Kate Beckinsdale- Hero

Elizabeth Banks or Kate Bosworth - Beth (the flight attendant)

billypilgrim's picture

Y ask why

There is no question that the only way to do the comic series justice is as a series on HBO or Showtime. I would seriously doubt they could pull off the plot in even three movies, One would be catastrophic (Remember, Remember the travesty of V for Vendetta!). If I had my dream director it would be the person who is working on Dexter (on Showtime), yet since can't get 'em how about the director of Robot Stories.

My dream cast (with a dose of reality):

Yorick: I agree with Ryan Gosling, but (sigh) he'd never commit, so... I like Chris Marquette (Alpha Dog, Fanboys) or Justin Long.

355: HAS to be Tracie Thoms (Deathblow, RENT) or N'Bushe Wright (Dead Presidents)

Dr. Allison Mann: Emily Liu (Boston Legal) or Marie Matiko both beautiful AND intelligent.

Beth: Evan Rachel Wood (Down in the Valley) or Piper Perabo

Hero: Mia Kirshner or Katherine Moenning first choice, but since they are commited to L word let's go with Rhona Mitra (Gideon Crossing)

Rose: Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill) or Rose Byrne (Sunshine) both Australian

Senator Brown: Joan Allen (Bourne Ultimatium)

Alter: Tse'elon: Naama Schendar (Close to Home)

Ninja/Dr. Mann's 'bodyguard': Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill) or Anne Suzuki

Dr. Mann: (Father): John Koyama (Only the Brave)

Dr. Mann: (Mother) HAS to be Tamlyn Tomita (The Eye, Joy Luck Club, Robot Stories)

Captain Kilina: HAS to be Shannyn Sossamon (Wriscutters) or Tia Carrere

Of course I could go on! Anyone want to recommend me for casting?

I love Y! I can't believe

I love Y! I can't believe anyone hasn't thought of this one, but when I first started reading it, my dream casting for Dr. Mann would have to be Lucy Liu. I mean....come on. Although, I will agree with those saying that a movie wouldn't do the comics justice. If it were a TV series, though, either anime or live-action, I would be so totally all over it.

I've just finished reading

I've just finished reading "Y: The Last Man", and want to quickly gush about it - it's the best comic ever! Definitely my favourite. I'd recommend it to anyone. Especially if you're not really into comics.

Anyhow, it seems word is that the plan of action for a "Y" film is for it to be in a trilogy, which makes sense to me - there's no way all the material would fit into a standard feaure-length film, as people have said. Not without loads of stuff getting left out, anyway - which would definitely suck.

I've no idea about who should be cast, I'm still putting thought into that one, but the rumour is that Shia LaBeouf will play Yorick. Hmm, I'm not sure how well that would work...

Whatever happens, I hope the film is a success and I look forward to hearing more about it (I read somewhere they were hoping for a 2009 release?). It will be interesting to see the storylines play out in the film format.
