UK's "Survivors" remake features bisexual character

A character on the BBC mini-series Survivors was revealed to play for our team this week — now let's hope she doesn't die.

Not to be confused with the CBS reality show Survivor, this UK program is a remake of Terry Nation's novel-inspired 1970s hit series about a flu epidemic that wipes out almost the entire human race.

As the tagline goes: "One virus, millions dead, a few survivors." So uplifting.

However, this new incarnation set in the present day is way more hip, as Anya the cute doctor (played by Affinity's Zoe Tapper) brought up her girlfriend for the first time on last night's episode. Unfortunately, it was in reference to her girlfriend having just died from the bloody flu. (Thanks for the tip, talkingguineapig!)

Anya, who is doing her best to help flu victims who have fallen ill, says she's been with men before so wasn't sure what she "was," but had fallen in love with her friend, Jenny (Freema Agyeman), who died in the first episode. Oddly, the scenes they'd shared together depicted them as friends, and nothing more.

Anya and Jenny

The last part of the mini-series airs next Tuesday on the BBC, so UK readers will be able to find out if Anya has any more to say on her relationship with Jenny, such as why she didn't act like she loved her when she was dying in the hospital of the flu. That sort of seems like the time when you couldn't care less about who knows about your bisexuality, wouldn't you say? Also, will Anya herself survive?

yeah i've been watching

yeah i've been watching this AVIDLY mainly for Zoe Tapper
and i think it's great they have a bisexual character
but i really don't like her relationship with other character Tom
fingers crossed it doesnt develop

and they depicted them as friends as they were former lovers (on a side note i thought it was Pat, Jenny's room mate who she fell in love with but from the flash backs of Jenny i guess not.. hm)

anyway so now i have the world most humungus crush on Zoe Tapper and for any UK people, Affinity is airing on ITV at 9pm 28th December :D
I managed to find it online last night and have to say it really got under my skin
her perfomance is incredible
honestly, everyone watch it!!!

Does anyone know if this is repeated? I just got back from uni in America and want to catch up on the shows here in the UK.

DR ANYA!

i love this woman. zoe tapper is a fantastic actress..she appeared briefly in Hex during Season 1 as one of roxannes friends.

i also hope the relationship with tom does not progress into anything further..i originally thought she was gay..but i guess not. and whatever any time she is on screen is a good time :)

maybe her ex can come back from the dead and stir things up...you never know...

I forgot about Hex!

Ah yes, Hex...I knew I'd seen her in something else before.  (As we are *still* waiting for Affinity to be shown over here!)

Survivors has been a bit hit and miss for me, but her character has kept it interesting, along with Abby, Julie Graham's character.  I've been a fan of hers since the days of At Home With The Braithwaites :D

That's interesting. Freema

That's interesting. Freema Agyeman, playing Jenny, played queer again recently in 'Little Dorrit' as Tattycorum.  *thumbs up*

Patricia

I thought that her girlfriend was Patricia, from episode 1. Anya asked Jenny for a minute alone with Patricia and when Jenny left she kissed Patricia goodbye on the forehead.

Pat

I too thought her girlfriend was Pat not Jenny. Especially with the kiss on the forehead in ep 1. BTW I actually tipped off AE about this a couple of weeks ago...

same here

i too took it that Pat was her girlfriend, not Jenny.

although i am now confused!! as i recorded the show on tuesday (it's on at the same time as csi miami) i actually watched it last night, and don't remember seeing any flashbacks, as someone above mentioned.

i have since recorded over it, so will have to go online to have a look see!!

if next week is the last episode, i assume there will be another series?

i'm actually surprised that it's taken this long for this to be picked up, it was obvious from the first episode that she was gay, or at least, in her own words, in love with a woman.

edit: okay, i remember the flashbacks now, lol! i thought the flashbacks mentioned were at the same time as when she admitted to Abby about her girlfriend, so got confused.

the first episode is still available online, so i guess it can be watched again, to confirm exactly who it is that's her girlfriend!

Jenny Collins was bi?

Well, I'll tell you there was absolutely no indication of such.

At least I didn't see or hear it.

I haven't watched past the first episode yet, though they are still sitting in the box waiting for me.

I love Freema, looking forward to seeing her in the UK Law & Order.
