The ladies of LollapaloozaConfession: I live in Chicago and have yet to go to Lollapalooza. It's true. Maybe because I go to enough shows in climate-controlled venues all year long, I've never felt the need to subject myself to the extreme heat of the virtually shadeless Grant Park in August. But this year's intiial line-up, which was just announced, is making me consider risking the inevitable sunburn and dehydration. At least for a day. Yeah Yeah Yeahs playing Lollapalooza Some of the bigger bands headlining this year's fest, which will take place August 7 - 9 include some '90s favorites like the Beastie Boys, Jane's Addiction, Tool and Depeche Mode and plenty of (more relevant) bands like Kings of Leon, The Killers, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend and a bunch of other dudes — as usual. While there may be an obviously uneven male-to-female musician ratio with the lineup thus far, the ladies already involved are what I'm most excited about. (I mean, obviously.) Santigold Surprisingly, Santogold didn't play Lolla last year. Strange, since she were basically everywhere I turned last summer (songs on commercials, like the one for Bud Light Lime, her face on the Converse ads, etc.). But she'll make up for it this year, under her new moniker (which I think is better, anyway, since her name is Santi.) Lykke Li Is it just me, or do a lot of really great things come from Sweden? I think so. And 23-year-old dance-pop artist Lykke Li is certainly no exception. Her debut album, Youth Novels, came out last year and she's been all over the place ever since. Haven't heard her? I recommend "I'm Good, I'm Gone," "Little Bit," and "Tonight." Well, and the rest of the album. Neko Case The alt-country singer-songwriter (and one-time Chicago resident) is fresh off the release of her third album, Middle Cyclone, which was No. 3 on the Billboard charts its first week. Her throaty alto voice will certainly draw Crystal Castles Sure, there's a guy in the Canadian electro duo Crystal Castles, but for me, it's all about Alice Glass. Sure, the Atari sound chip they're known for is great and everything, but it's Glass' singing (or screaming?) makes this group interesting. It'll be interesting to see what she does at Lolla, as the band's set was ended at last year's Glastonbury Festival when she climbed a speaker. My kind of girl. Bat for Lashes Brighton-based singer Natasha Khan just released her second album, Two Suns, and her single "Daniel" has been everywhere it seems, lately. While she's often compared to Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bat for Lashes has a sound all her own: eccentric-folk-meets-ethereal-pop. Ida Maria I like a girl who can be honest. And when I first heard Ida Maria's new single, "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked," I figured it didn't get any more honest than that. The Norwegian punk rocker, who debut album, Fortress Round My Heart, came out this year, is known for her rowdy live show antics. A true punk-rocker. There's also a Hercules and Love Affair DJ set, and more performers to be announced as the three-date festival draws near. Is there anyone missing that you thought would book some stage time at this year's Lolla? Do you make the trips to any of the bigger summer fests? Submitted by on April 21, 2009 - 4:00pm. |

I really want to go this
I really want to go this year. I've already started the process of begging my parents.

Oh man, I'd LOVE to make
Oh man, I'd LOVE to make this Lollapalooza. I mean, YYYs, Santigold and Lykke Li all at the same show? Really great female artists and other groups I love (MSTRKRFT, Vampire Weekend...)
Lolla always has an amazing
Lolla always has an amazing lineup and this year is no different. Unfortunately I'm no where near, but I like summer festivals. However, sometimes it's harder to appreciate and really take in more intimate music on large outdoor stages - people like Lykke Li and Neko Case are infinitely better in small venues. If any of these great artists are close to you GO CHECK 'EM OUT! Amazing stuff.
Lallo is quite...
I live in Chicago, and felt the same way you did until two years ago. When I heard M.I.A., the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and countless other bands I loved were going to be there, I got the weekend pass. I sooo wasn't prepared the first day I went. As you explained, it was hot, I was dehydrated every ten minutes (exaggerating), people kept running into me...I was so annoyed. The next two days, I came well prepared. I took an unbrella, sun block, sun glasses, two big bottles of water (which I froze and let melt during the event- this will keep it cold for a while), and had a schedule made of where the acts were playing and at what time. Also, if you don't want to get crushed, stay in the back. I was front row for the performances, and people kept trying to shove us into the rail so they could get our spots. (you need an attitude as well)
Lalla is quite an experience and can be overwhelming. Besides all of this, I had the best time of my life and will be there this year. (well prepared)

Lollapalooza>>
It's a pretty tight line-up, however...
As a diehard Jane's fan, I take issue with the insinuation that Jane's is not relavant. KOL is an OK live band and TVOTR is def. cool (TK and VW do nothing for me) but they do not hold a candle to the mighty Jane's as a live band. No matter how much time has pased (in this case- almost 20 years for the original line up) they are STILL better than bands half their age.
Bow down to the mighty Jane's!!
I've got the hots for Perry Farrell
double post. boooooooo.
ugh! why the hell do i live
i can honestly say...
Ooohhh, I love...
Natasha Khan
OMFG
I want to go soooooo bad this year I've never gone and I've always wanted to go. If Santigold, Crystal Castles, Bat for Lashes, Depeche Mode, and Vampire Weekend are there I'M IN THERE.

I live in Chicago too
and I haven't been to Lollapalooza
i'd be jealous...
but luckily summer months bring tons of amazing shows, even in toronto.
i love alice glass, and i completely love crystal castles, but i get sick of their crybaby bullshit at live shows -- cancelling, walking off, audio problems with their own technicians, the whole 'our opening band stole our pedal', etc. i've been witness to a couple of these, and was/am not impressed.
i was initally confused by santogold's 'santigold' name change. when i started seeing it everywhere i was like 'um, is everyone misspelling it or have i been misspelling it this whole time?'. good to know the reasoning behind it.
i'm incredibly jealous that i haven't/won't see H&LA, even if just for a dj set. but i'm cheered up by the fact i'm seeing bat for lashes on saturday! woo! love natasha.
looks like a pretty solid lineup though. if i were in the area i would def be going.
