Scarlett Johansson is the latest Marilyn Monroe impersonator

Ads for Dolce & Gabbana's new cosmetics line were released today, featuring Scarlett Johansson as Marilyn Monroe reincarnate. Sexy? Sure. Original? Not so much. It's no surprise that people are so fond of replicating Monroe's iconic look — but aren't any celebrities notable enough to just pose as themselves?

In a recent statement, Stefana Gabbana said of ScarJo:

Scarlett is sure of herself. She’s a beautiful girl, but she’s really easy going. She is very Dolce & Gabbana.

Right, so dress her up as someone else to push your rose-scented lipstick. Makes sense.

To her credit, Scarlett is of course not the only one who's gotten her Marilyn on recently. Lindsay Lohan recreated "The Last Sitting" with Bert Stern, the original photographer who shot Marilyn in 1962, for New York Magazine last year.

Ironically, Lohan said she was envious of ScarJo in the February issue of Interview:

...I work just as hard as any other actress around my age, like Scarlett Johansson, but I just don't get the opportunities that they get because people are so distracted by the mess that I created in my life.

At least she did Marilyn first — but not before several other beautiful women have donned the classic blonde-lady look. Stars like Anna Nicole Smith, Mira Sorvino, Kylie Minogue, Drew Barrymore and Melissa George have all taken a turn at achieving the iconic look.

How do you feel about Scarlett as Marilyn? Can she pull it off better than the rest?

I kinda looked at Anna

I kinda looked at Anna Nicole Smith's life as one giant Marilyn Monroe impersonation, and I think she pulled it off great. Granted, being like Marilyn isn't necessarily a positive thing.

I think that Scarlett looks

I think that Scarlett looks a lot like Marilyn aryway and although Marilyn had alot of drama in her life (and death) I think that type (not the drug part) of woman is very attractive and needful in a world where everyone is a size zero. I think although it is not original per se having a woman with curves and taking inspiration from a glamourous period like that is positive and I think she has mastered it very well

...and X-tina.

When I saw The Black Dalia a few years back, Scarlett's look (the red lips, blonde hair) really stood out to me, and I remember thinking that she looked a lot like Marilyn. It was tame, though -- slacks as opposed to lingerie. It was a look that left more to the imagination. I liked it.

I think Cameron Diaz is a celebrity who could pull of the yellow roses look, spot-on.

I really wasn't a big fan of the NY Mag photos of LiLo, though. That look just seems a little forced and unnatural, in my opinion.

No one else should be Marilyn, BUT Marilyn.

Marilyn Monroe was such an icon, and still is, so of course people are going to want to duplicate that. Am I saying they should? Absolutely not. Are people seriously out of ideas? Things go away and then they come back again. Create something new, I say!

Madonna

Does it make me old that the Marilyn impersonator I always think of first is Madonna in the video for Material Girl?  I'm surprised that didn't get a mention.  I never even saw half of the others, thank goodness.

Well, she does a better job than some of ther others...

...but I agree with Akaisha. The only woman who can really pull of that unique look is Marilyn. Why can't people find someone new to copy? Or better yet, think of something original! Use your *Imaginaaaation* kudos to anyone who got that reference...

Spongebob

The episode where Spongebob orders a huge tv in the mail and when it arrives he tosses the tv so he and Patrick can play in the box the tv came in. Squidward hears all these realistic sounds (like helicopters and avalanches) coming from the box and Spongebob tells him he and Patrick are just using their 'imaginaaations' and he makes a big rainbow with his hands. It's pretty awesome.

That is an amazing episode.

My favorite Spongebob episode is when Spongebob doesn't know he's a wanted criminal. At the end, Patrick tells Spongebob where the criminal is so Spongebob can run away. Spongebob proceeds to run from himself for a few minutes. Priceless.

My favorite is

when Patrick and Spongebob 'borrow' a balloon because Mr. Krabs told them it was ok to borrow things, but only if you bring them back before they're missed. Then the balloon pops, and they freak out and run away. Hilarity ensues.

Thumbs up

I think she pulls the "look" off very well.

While I don't find it appealing, I will say that it's not derivative. I think that that is what you're actually trying to get at with this Marilyn thing. It's ok to be influenced by something, but you're expected to bring something fresh to the table. I think that ScarJo did. Sure, Marilyn's been done to death, and then some, even for her, but ScarJo seems to be still representative of herself.

I love it

Scarlett looks beautiful, she really has the classic femininity of Marilyn's era - if it's derivative, I don't really care, it's a classic look (which was worn by more than just Marilyn at the time) and i don't mind how many times I see it.

Strangely, though my usual 'type' are ladies like Shane or Joan Jett, I find this look strangely alluring...

My first huge lesbian crush was on Gwen Stefani, who made the platinum blonde and red lipstick look her own. Personally I think the recent spate of celebrities modelling the same look also owes something to Gwen, who's been doing it for years!

I never listen to things they say, cos what you hear gets in your way (Joan Jett)

Love Scarlett...

Scarlett Johansson is so beautiful...she can look super glamourous but she's still very natural and down-to-earth. And she looks very much like Marilyn Monroe in this picture...gorgeous. Although the Marilyn Monroe-impersonation thing is getting a little tired...

My Favourite Marilyn

is this old lady who walks around Queen Street Mall in Brisbane (Australia) who believes that she is Miss Munroe. She has the full make-up, hair, outfits and the voice. She spends most of her time looking bewildered and flirting with young boys

Was Marilyn really the first to do this look?

Or is she just the most memorable.

I am a fan of Gwen Stefani's use of the look. Once I read in a magazine that Gwen was just stealing Madonna's look I was so infuriated by the stupidity of that comment.

As for Scarlett I think she has been working the Marilyn look for a while. She has the more classic actress looks instead of the modern skinny look that is popular now.

True Dolce & Gabbana are not being original with this advert. But if them being original is the awful pyjama look that was featured in the latest vogue then i think maybe unoriginal is a better thing.

she was more...one of the originals

Actually Marilyn Monroe wasnt the first, she actually admitted being inspired by Jayne Mansfield. Jayne was one of the original blonde bomb shells....
