Rachel Maddow makes the "Elle" It List

It's no secret that most of us here at AfterEllen.com think Rachel Maddow is one of the smartest, funniest, most interesting people in media (and really, the whole lesbian thing is just a bonus). And it's not shocking that many of us think she has amazing, not-trying-too hard style.

What is a bit shocking, perhaps, is that Elle magazine agrees.

Rachel Maddow is included among 27 hot celebs on The It List 2009, Elle's second annual personal style awards.

Calling Maddow the "media master," Elle writes (under the hot photo of Rachel in suspenders):

Bucking the status quo, the TV anchor understands the appeal of simplicity, wearing just a brush of mascara, a clean pixie cut, and understated Jil Sander suits.

Thank you, Elle, for recognizing something we've been pretty into over the last year. And, while they don't include her off-show style of button down western shirts, jeans, sneakers and geek-chic glasses, it's nice to see some representation in a typically straight, ultra-femme publication.

Some other fashionistas who made the list are Kristen Stewart for her "inflections of ’90s grunge and Twilight-ish vampire-chic," Rihanna for her "daring mix of masculine tailoring and street-style flash," and, not at all surprisingly, Lady GaGa, for basically wearing crazy ensembles everywhere she goes or, as Elle suggests, being the new Madonna.

The actress we all love to hate/hate to love, Megan Fox, and musician M.I.A. also made the cut.

Check out the rest of who Elle thinks was the most fashionable this year and let us know what you think: Is anyone missing or does it not really matter because you stopped reading after you saw Rachel Maddow's photo?

Yes

I have posted the picture on the celebrity board.  And, um, wow, yes, I still don't care about the rest of the article or the magazine.  Yumness.  She's hot.

(I really, really need to find a lady friend.)

In complete agreeance with

In complete agreeance with you. I'm kind of tempted to print it out and put it on my wall.

Also, loving the Jarvis profile pic. He's one of those guys I'm praying some drag king would do a tribute to, because I would pounce in a moment. The list also includes Elvis Costello and David Byrne.

Potarded's picture

I'd totally do

A drag impersonation of jarvis cocker if I could do him any justice, :D.  I'm too big boobed and dark skinned for it.

She is such a hot woman; funny, smart and beautiful!

Finally

Finally something in AfterEllen's distasteful daily Rachel Maddow political indoctrination report I can agree with--and do it wholeheartedly!!!
sloane's picture

distasteful would be having

distasteful would be having daily commentary about a racist, homophobic, sexist, classist f**k like rush limbaugh, glenn beck, or bill o'reilly, although i'm sure you wouldn't have a problem with it. afterellen is trying to educate people through rachel maddow because she has educational, insightful, TRUTHFUL, AND PROGRESSIVE (not regressive, like many faux noose programs) information on her show. you should check rachel's show and the afterellen daily blog on it sometime, so you'd have something more truthful to call her show then political indoctrination.
GrrrlRomeo's picture

Yeah, women should just shut up and look hot.

Typical, Becky. If you just wanted to look at pretty pictures of women and not be subjected to their ideas and opinions, they have sites for that.

Is "indoctrination" the new conservative buzzword? The funny thing is, no one is saying not to debate the issues...except for conservatives. Calling people socialist, communist and accusing them of "political indoctrination" is intended to stifle debate. And demanding that certain opinions not be on the site is certainly intended to stifle debate.

But back on topic, this is an awesome photo of a whole person. Someone who reached success because of her brains and talent for expressing her opinion....without which this photo would not exist.

rachel looks hot and i'm

rachel looks hot and i'm happy that they not only included a lesbian, but a non-gender conforming one.  one who's also extremely intelligent and never loses an arguement or debate (that makes her even hotter). she's so cute and i'm happy for her visibility and success.

Putting on my geeky fangirl hat...

Maddow doesn't have a "pixie cut"! It's a butch hairdo. Deal with it, Elle! But it is great to have that sort of magazine recognise her.

And Becky C., I know people have been criticising you a lot, but I do respect you for standing up for what you believe in. I've said before that I do agree with you on principle, just not entirely on politics. As much as I disagree with you often on the latter, I would probably be doing exactly the same thing if I was on the other side of political fence.

agreed

She doesn't have a pixie cut. I hate when people try to rope all short haired lesbians into a "pixie cut" description. UGH.

sorry, comparing slavery to

sorry, comparing slavery to the right to get married will never earn becky c. any respect in my book. i'm black and a lesbian. my ancestors were slaves, not me and certainly not becky c.. yes i am disenfranchised, but i would never compare any civil rights struggle i'm going through now to what they went through, particularly not to make some asinine political point. for anyone to diminish slavery in any way is outrageous and despicable. her commentary is disgusting, uneducated, partisan hyperbole.  she's like the republican fools who want to call obama a nazi over healthcare reforms. it's like, how dare you?
