Rachel Maddow makes her mark in Vogue

Rachel Maddow is "making her mark on cable news by keeping her cool when everyone else is losing theirs," says the January issue of Vogue. Yes, Vogue — the fashion magazine.

Of course, we weren't surprised when our Rachel (we can say that, right? It's not creepy, it's prideful, I swear) made it in the OUT 100 or on the cover of The Advocate; that's to be expected, given Maddow's rise to news superstardom this year. And now she's making her way into mainstream style magazines.

The Vogue feature on Maddow, Katie Couric and Campbell Brown, called "Shaping the News," was posted online today and features a fantastic photo of Maddow sporting — not the typical ridiculous Vogue-esque get-up some might have imagined — but her usual quirky glasses, snazzy suit and Converse sneakers.

This is, of course, one of the reasons she's so well-liked, and Vogue knows it, writing:

Her style of political discourse is a break from the shouting, point-counterpoint approach that dominates cable news, instead emphasizing her relentlessly cheerful, conscientiously concise opinions. "I'm trying to get people to agree with me," she says. "I am trying to say, 'Here's how I see the world.' Not everybody's going to agree with me. But I think that I make sense, and I would like you to think that I make sense, too, because I think that we can make sense of this world together, you and me, if" — and here she shifts into a fake TV announcer's voice — "you'll just follow along!"

This year, a feature story; next year, a cover model?

    It's nice to go outside the mainstream and pull someone in and introduce them to their demographic. I hope more of this comes in the future. Then some poor straight mamma or daddy can relax and realize their kid is not so weird or different after all. I'm speaking on terms of dressing differently or being a prodigy. Children prodigy, I think Rachel Maddow is a former of, get a lot of hell for being gifted.

    btw...her appeal is just as she says, she makes it about believing her. Which she does more than well...and speaks like a smart friend who knows more than you do. bravo RM..keep it real.

    I love Rachel Madoow so much.

    I work on her show as the lighting director every once in awhile, including tonight and the rest of the week!

    Sooo, if you watch her show this week and like the way she looks thats me on the other side!

    I must say that I didnt know Rachel till she appeared on here...then I started to watch her show and I must say wow. She is smart, funny, and cute. I really like her show..I watch it all the time now..love her.

    i heard about this shoot a while back and i prayed to jeebus that they wouldn't de-dyke her.might i say she wears jil sander very, very well. although i was hoping to see her in some thom browne--maybe for that cover story.

    You love her so hard, and with good reason.  We've moved on from trying to make a statement in magazines like Curve and Girls Like Us into Vogue.

    All I can say about Rachel is that she is a fresh face with views  on Cable news. I find myself laughing as she explains what we who voted for Change understand.  She is absolutely amazing.

    I was a big fan of her Air America radio show, and then she did a bunch of you tube posts about the primaries, and all I could think was "this woman needs to be on a news network".  Now it has happened, and I think she reaches a lot of viewers with her take on all things political and otherwise.  I am so glad that Kent Jones is back. He is a hoot.

    its beyond a gay thing. she simply connects. and she connects bc she is so freaking intelligent as well as charming.  they have a good line up over there on msnbc, and adding her was only right.  i was so proud to have an out lesbian discussing prop 8 on a station other than logo (uh no offense). she didnt have to censor her views. wtf. thats progress (even tho we fell backwards w the passing of prop 8).  even my mother cannot help but comment positively on ms maddow.  (smile)

    I actually was just commenting on this topic tonight when I was watching Rachel. I hate that she's so adorably butch in real life and on TV, she's all femme and wearing eyeshadow. I much prefer what she actually looks like, she's perfect.

    i love both looks! if she really is uncomfortable in her femmier look then i guess that makes me dislike it a bit and its sad she can't be herself, but most ppl smarten up for TV not just her.. anyways, i#m glad we get both looks

    She really does in my opinion.  Rachel is intelligent, well informed, articulate, confident and it doesn't hurt that she's is incredibly attractive.  She has the ability to draw in the audience and make you trust her.  Oh hell, my grandparents love her show, they tune in every night- heh, it was something I could talk to them about over Thanksgiving :)

    Is it weird for me to say that Rachel Maddow reminds me of an older version of myself?  xD

    I think I might have just a teensy crush on her now though (Doesn't everyone?)...  But she does actually look a bit like my girlfriend so it's not that creepy ^.^
