Portia de Rossi plans to pen a memoir

According to the New York Observer, a memoir from Portia de Rossi is in the works. So, it looks like Ellen won't be the only published author in the power couple.

Apparently, a head of William Morris Endeavor has already begun sending out proposals from Portia to book editors, including a writing sample relating to her highly-publicized battle with anorexia, which was at its worst during her Ally McBeal days.

Obviously, this is exciting news, as most of us would be interested in learning more about Portia's life pre-Ellen (and, yeah, we want to know all about her life now, too). After all, she was voted No. 1 on this year's Hot 100. However, it's sort of nice to know that someone as high-profile as Portia has to actually put work into getting a book deal.

Even though we'd still probably read her just talking about her morning routines with her wife (breakfast? a workout? which paper do they read?), it'll be much more interesting to actually get to "know" Portia from her own words, rather than just hearsay. Like, how does she feel to be voted No. 1 on AfterEllen.com's Hot 100 list? Kidding! (Sort of.)

Her childhood, when she was still just Amanda Lee Rogers in Australia, is largely a mystery, as is her first marriage — to a man (documentary filmmaker Mel Metcalfe). OK, maybe we don't care so much about that last one. But, all jokes aside, a memoir from one of the most widely known and respected out lesbians can only be good, especially in terms of visibility for our community.

Also, Portia has mentioned her struggle with coming to terms with her sexuality, so her perspective on that, and being a young lesbian in the closet, will surely be helpful to young readers.

What would you be most interested to read about Portia's life?

........

I'd love to read about her when she was younger (being a gay teen and all about that.) and also about her experiences in hollywood and whether or not she was forced to keep quiet about her sexuality (if anyone knew). I'd like to know a little more about her, and like you said her past is a bit of a mystery, no one knows much about her younger days, so I'd love to read about that.

I'd personally love to read her memoir. I love her on Better Off Ted!! And btw I'm so glad it's coming back for another season! I was worried for a while there. It really is a good show and (obviously) I love Portia on it, the rest of the cast is awesome too! :)

=D !!!!!!!!!!

I absolutly love Portia de Rossi!!! (and Ellen of course!) I was hoping - dreaming - that she would do something like this! Wooo!

I would love to know more about her. She seems like an amazing person.

I'd love to read about her!

I'd love to read about her! Besides the fact that's she's married to Ellen and really sweet, I don't know much about her. It'd be nice to get some background information on the woman voted number 1 on AE's hot 100 (as you nicely stated about three times too many). ;)

sounds really cool, i would totally read that

You know you want to.
tnc's picture

well..

Looks more airbrushed than anything else. I don't care if she has had botox or not to be honest just as long as she doesn't go over board with it and end up changing her damn face.

I would love to see Portia write a memoir with several of chapters on the talented and gorgeous, Fran Gregorini, that she stupidly dumped for grandma.

Does Ellen not own a mirror or a grown woman's pair of shoes? She dresses like a 14 yr old boy.  Oy.

Leigh7's picture

Well...

...they do say it takes one to know one, so I can only imagine that someone who hasn't yet matured into a respectful adult would post such juvenile comments concerning Ellen.

Puberty's a bitch...kicks you in the ass like grandma's sneaker, doesn't it?  <w>

tnc's picture

aww

the Ellen fangirls are out in full force with their little boy sneakers probably their laces are untied too.

Old lady looks like a dude, and not a cute one either.

It's pretty pathetic when

It's pretty pathetic when you attack some celebrity for how she dresses when you don't even have your own picture up yourself. You do realize you don't know these people right? If you're a Portia fan, shouldn't you be happy that she's happy or is your self-esteem so low that you have to make stupid comebacks (if you could even call them that) to defend your bitching?

Oh, my shoes are tied, but thanks for caring. =)

tnc's picture

Honey, I could never compete

Honey, I could never compete with your bitching. You two have definitely mastered the lesbian stereotypes.

Little boy...

...how ironic that he should mention himself in his own post.

Then again, it's to be expected from someone so...small.

First, when you're a billionaire, then you can rip on Ellen DeGeneres; second, Ellen is an amazing person whose most likely been through a lot more than you have and third, Portia loves her so suck it. =)

Leigh7: virtual high five!

RainbowSheep's picture

Well said, Cassidy!

I agree. Ellen is awesome and I'd totally marry her in a heartbeat! Portia lucked out with Ellen, let's not lie. They're a great couple.

^_^

Ellen is just so amazing! She's really a role model to me, not just because she's gay and I would love to get to know more about Portia because she must be awesome too otherwise Ellen wouldn't have married her. =p

Leigh7's picture

Well...

...would you like a virtual high five in return, or should we both just virtually slap him instead..?    <w>

Cassidy's picture

lol

Can't we do both? :D
Leigh7's picture

I guess we could..

...he'd probably enjoy that too, of course.

He seems to like older women...  <w>

RE: TNC

Your comments need to be within the AfterEllen guidelines and you're near crossing the line.  So no, you can't post whatever you like.

Of course, you are welcome to your own opinions but they need to be presented in a non-offensive manner.  It's rather odd you would make such comments considering this is a bisexual/lesbian site and our demographic includes both butch and androgynous women.  If you do not find them attractive that's fine, but keep it to yourself please.  There's no need to be insulting.

You can view the posting rules from the link in my signature.

Thanks.

Enough

Let's end these personal attacks now please.  I'm sure our readers would rather read discussions on the article itself and not off-topic arguing between members.

loveing Portia

I think its great she's going to be published (hoping!) I sure will be buying it when its comes out. Love PORTIA!
demoiselle cyan's picture

Portia Portia Portia...

Let us see what she has to say, since every time Ellen and her are on a red carpet or whatever... Ellen does all the talking.. it seems every time she opens her mouth, Ellen cuts her... I think it may be interesting, (although the coming out part may be super helpful and mega interesting) not as interesting as Melissa Etheridge's, for example.. ha that was a great one. Can't wait for it to come out.

A bit off topic

This might seem kind of random, but I was scrolling down and in the first picture of Ellen and Portia, if you cut off their heads and just see their legs Ellens foot looks like a star. It just pops out. I thought that was kinda awesome. Like she was about to break out into a dance.

Yes!

Yes!  The prospect of reading a memoir by Portia is really exciting!

I bought the K. Chenoweth book the day it came out and it's in the front of my bookshelf for another read because I laughed so much while reading it.  I suspect Portia's book will get the same treatment.

Of Course!

I would certainly read it. The main reason I would though would be hopes of her writing about her childhood. I currently live (and always have lived) in the Australian town where Portia grew up. Its such a small and sometimes dingy place that the fact that she managed to somewhat escape it and get where she is today amazes me.
RainbowSheep's picture

Would Alex Hedison read it?

I've always wondered what Alex Hedison and Francesca Gregorini (Ellen and Portia's exes) think when they see how much the world loves E and P? Does Alex sit there fuming, drawing a knife across the wedding pictures in People magazine? I'd love to know how exactly those relationships ended, as E and P were serious very quickly. And what about Anne Heche? What would happen if she suddenly starred in a massively popular TV series? Could Ellen be the ONLY TV host not to interview her? Oh the dynamics of Hollywood relationships!

Advocate Interview

ellen and portia have both said numerous times that they had known and liked each other for a few years before they finally decided to officially get together. their relationship seemed sudden, but it wasn't, really.

here's a good interview with portia on that (and other things): http://www.advocate.com/issue_story_ektid20037.asp

Well......

I'd like to hear about her struggles with coming to accept her sexuality and being closeted, and maybe even her anorexia struggles, but her first marriage? And ally mcbeal days? Not so much, to tell the truth. However, no doubt I'll read it, just to see! Who knows? Maybe it'll be an interesting tale. :)
