Portia de Rossi finally feels like sharing

Forget college basketball; March is all about Portia de Rossi.

The actress and (I'm pretty sure this goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway because it still makes me warm and fuzzy inside) wife of Ellen DeGeneres will be honored with the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award for her increasing outspokenness for equal rights. More and more, she is speaking her mind (and ours), like when she put The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck in her place on the subject of gay marriage.

Clearly, the public has taken notice. In addition to the HRC honor, de Rossi is also the March cover girl of The Advocate. The accompanying interview, titled "The Great de Rossi," features a typically candid de Rossi, discussing everything from starting out in Hollywood, being "half of the most famous gay couple in the world," and officially announcing her upcoming memoir (which I told you about in June, when rumors first began.)

The article is a great read, and will likely make you wish even more that Portia was your BFF. She comes off down to earth and totally unabashedly gay. Like "I'm here, I'm queer, get used to it," but more original — a far cry from when she first started out.

On being a hot new star, fresh from down under, Portia tells the magazine:

Oh, I’m Portia. I’m fresh and new to Hollywood. I just found myself in Ally McBeal. Now I’m in my underwear and sleeping with my boss even though I don’t want to portray women in the workplace that way. All of these things were tearing me apart. Plus — I was gay, did I mention?

It's funny to think there was a time Portia may not have been comfortable being out, as it doesn't seem possible for her to be any other way. She's clearly deserving of the HRC award for visibility by just being herself: a normal, seemingly well-adjusted celesbian who is no longer concerned about hurting her career to speak out for what's right.

She tells The Advocate, "Maybe by sharing my life, I can make people more aware of how important gay marriage is.”

And when asked if that is more important to her than acting she says:

Of course. Actors come and go. Characters come and go. TV shows come and go. While acting is entertaining, for me personally, it’s a little empty.

While I totally agree that everyone is entitled to his or her privacy, I must say it would be nice if more people, celebrities or otherwise, felt the same. Thanks for sharing, Portia.

Excellent!

This is great. She is so funny, and i'm glad that she's being open and just fun. Also, what else is great about this...is that on twitter the advocate's picture is the lovely face of Portia De Rossi. Haha, maybe now I won't get annoyed when they tweet so much.

How Long Will This Advocate Issue Of Portia Be On Newsstands?

I'm pretty much stuck in my apartment due to inclement crazy winter weather.  So how long will this issue of Portia will be on the newsstand? I won't get the issue until next week.

Will she remain gay after Ellen?

I don't want to waste your party, but I'm not sure she's gay but rather that she's just in a relationship with a gay woman. If it's no 2, that would be more honest to say it publicly.

I'm a bit skeptical... So many 'really' straight women fall for millionaire lesbian stars.

Some say love has no gender. I say it must be boring! LOL

See you!

English culture is basically homosexual in the sense that what the men really care about is the other men. Germaine Greer

Megan Rose Gedris's picture

Ugh.

So she's just chosen to be gay, then? She's really straight deep down inside, and we'll all see that when things don't go right with Ellen and she goes running back to men?

Ugh. I hear this enough from the religious right. Do I seriously have to hear this from the queer community, too?

..oh, I'm pretty sure that will continue.  <w>

Seriously I hate To Break It To You...

With your egotistical self. Portia is gay and has been in a relationship w/ another womyn b/f Ellen. I can't stand people like you who write off gorgeous and  fem womyn off as being gay.

So much for the love of all Lesbians uh?

Secondsex's picture

We'll see later...

That's all I'm saying.

You're not making sense

Why do you believe she isn't a lesbian?
Sarah from Chicago's picture

Are you an idiot?

Portia dated other women before Ellen (was in a well publicised committed relationship with Ringo Star's daughter for a while amongst others), she's spoken of the pressure to keep closeted for her career, about struggling to come out, and the pain of hiding her sexuality.

I mean, seriously, what your evidence for this? That she's femme? Because I gotta say, as a femme lesbian myself, I am really sick of having our sexualities doubted simply because we don't dress "like a lesbian should".

Not to mention, when Ellen and Portia started dating, Ellen was hardly on an upswing in her career.

god I love you!

Oh Sarah!  Your comments are always so spot-on and always so ballsy!
HorizonsEast's picture

Amen!

I was going to say something along those lines, and you took the words out of my mouth (er, rather, out of my typing hands, I guess).

One small nitpick: Francesca Gregorini (Portia's ex-girlfriend) is Ringo Starr's stepdaughter, not his actual daughter.  But, that's neither here nor there.  The larger point still stands: Portia is living proof that being 100% feminine and 100% lesbian are not mutually exclusive traits at all!

oliviabensonismywife's picture

Oh, Sarah!

A grrl after my own heart! =) I seriously adore your posts, even when I don't necessarily agree with you. However, in this case? I most definitely agree!

To Secondsex: You are such an arrogant, presumptious person. You do not know Portia de Rossi, yet you question what, by all evidence, has been a very painful & long process for her. Coming out is one of the hardest things to do for anyone, which you should know - unless you're "not really a lesbian?"

As a femme lesbian myself, it infuriates and frustrates me when people assume that I'm "not really gay" or "must be going through a phase" or something eqaully ridiculous. My sexuality is who I am, my very identity in that aspect of my life. The way I dress, my make-up, hair & accessories are important to me, but fashion has nothing whatsoever to do with my sexual orientation.

You need to check yourself.

Alliesaurus's picture

To Echo the other posters

Do you have anything to support that assertion other than the nebulous idea that Portia de Rossi "seems" straight to you? I'm skeptical as to whether or not you have anything concrete on which to base your claims.

While you're more than welcome to remain incredulous of others' sexuality, you are, in effect, denying a part of who they are. We do a great disrespect to others when we do so. I am sure most of us have experienced something of the sort before, and I don't see why you feel the need to do it to others.

well said!

portia is cool!

I don't think Portia is gay just for Ellen. Being a lesbian had been hinted at long before they got together.

She's been very open about being Gay. I don't think she would go so far as getting invloved in political views, if she wasn't. Why bother?

My personal opinion is that she's gay, and from her interviews she seems like a down to earth person and from the way she speaks about how men don't believe she's gay coz shes femme makes me think she really is gay.

I like her and I love that she's Ellens wife too!!

I've had a crush on Portia

I've had a crush on Portia for so long now. She is a truly beautiful woman and looks great in these photos. I also get warm fuzzy feelings too whenever I say "wife" or "married" when talking about Portia or Ellen.

Portia is amazing. I loved her in Arrested Development, I love her in Better off Ted, and I adore her and Ellen as a couple.

Happiness

I've been loving Portia this last year and a half, she's getting more and more assertive and comfortable and it just makes her sexier and more fantastic.... LOL

And clearly she and Ellen are excellent for one another, they are both so smiley around one another and looking fabulously wonderful and adorable as apparent in the above picture!

Portia

There is something in Portia that I don't like. The same thing happened to me with Anne Heche. And we all know the end of the love story of Ellen and her. I don't trust Portia.

I don't care if she is

I don't care if she is straight or gay, I just love her since the Ally Mcbeal series.

But, I am still hoping that she is not acting in her relationship with Ellen, that she really love her. She meant, from her heart, when she said I love my wife.

Portia is oh so beautiful and oh so very, very gay

I, too, first fell in love with Portia on Ally (and Lucy Lu) and was thrilled when she finally came out.  As a person who stayed closeted for the majority of my adult life and not famous-I totally get it.  I wouldn't classify myself as "femme" but I definitely get a lot of unwanted attention from men and people who don't believe I'm gay because I don't "look" gay.

Bravo for her being a consistant out-spoken lesbian activist.  She puts a pretty little face to something that most people still don't understand anything about.  I realize that she doesn't represent all of us physically but she does so vocally with class, poise, and assertion.

maddness!!!

I don't know if some of you actually read what you write b4 you submit it cuz everybody knows Portia was gay long b4 Ellen and in fact when they met I think they were either both in relationships or one was and the other wasn't or something like that. Point being she's a flaming card carrying, flag waving lezzy [as we like 2 say in the Caribbean] and just because Ellen's ex was a flag warmer does not mean Portia is one as well. And last but not least, Portia is one of the few openly fem celesbians out there so don't dare give her grief. Celebrate her don't insult her... article was fab thanks for the link..

The Cover

The cover shot is absolutely gorgeous. Like wall-poster worthy. I don't think it could have been any better.

And for anyone denying her sexuality - get over your self-hating stereotypes, please.

That last picture

The last picture in this post is adorable! They are so cute together.
Thlayli's picture

very beautiful

I never really "got" Portia's looks when she was on Ally McBeal...something about the way they were doing her eyebrows. But with this more natural look, she is truly a breathtaking woman. Also glad to see her taking a more active role in things, as she is the "other half" of an important and inspirational couple.

As far as the exchange generated by Secondsex, the perception that a beautiful, femme woman "can't possibly be really gay" still seems to be rampant out there, and it's distressing. I would have thought there were enough out-beautiful-femmes by now that people would start getting a clue. It's a shame, and it must be particularly frustrating for our more feminine sisters.

Symetta's picture

Beautiful!!!

I love Portia and & Ellen, I am so happy that she came out and is not affraid, I feel some how connected to them b/c my other half and I got married during the same week in the same place in San Francisco and we are all legal now!!!

Still fell bad for those who want to and can't............

Be honest to yourself!!!

HorizonsEast's picture

I am very impressed . . .

. . . with the interview.  Portia is so well-spoken on the issues, and refreshingly honest without being narcissistic and crass the way most celebrities are.  Going beyond the issue of being gay, on which she is obviously an excellent spokesperson, Portia also demonstrates the fact that being well-known is neither a reason nor an excuse to behave like a middle-schooler.  Contrast her mature and insightful comments with the recent closed-minded, self-centered nastiness spewed forth by the likes of, say, John Mayer.  With unfiltered malarkey being the stock-in-trade of celebrity interviews, we're very lucky to have an example of that incredibly rare breed known as a class act on our side!

mm can't wait

Uff I can't wait to read her memoir. Although I have to admit that I also thought that she wasn't really gay.. for some reason... but whatever... I mean I guess it was hard for her to be closeted.. good for her for being outspoken.
