La Roux’s Elly Jackson refutes lesbian rumors

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news to all you hopeful music fans, but Elly Jackson, the adorable androgynous singer of British electro-pop duo La Roux is, in fact, not gay. It’s hard to wrap your head around, I know.

But, you know, there are plenty of cute women out there who seem like they just have to be gay, and aren’t, no matter how bad we want them on our team. Tilda Swinton, for example, is so straight she has two male lovers. Coincidentally, 21-year-old Jackson sort of looks a bit like a young Swinton, doesn’t she?

And then there’s Alicia Keys, Mariska Hargitay, and Ellen Page, some of the most popular (reportedly) straight women we just can’t stop hoping will wind up gay.

Ellen Page never said anything about her sexuality either way, and didn’t have a boyfriend anyone knew about (besides Ben Foster, rumored for a second, years ago), and she put up with her overly-adoring fans labeling her a lesbian due to their own wishful thinking. (I’m not saying I’m not guilty of this.)

Now that La Roux is topping charts with their singles “In For The Kill” and “Bulletproof,” Elly Jackson is dealing with the fact that her fans are so convinced she’s a lesbian, they’re throwing their bras onstage while she performs. Awkward.

While the singer is not surprised to have a large gay fanbase, she told Heat magazine:

It’s the fact that they think I want their bras — that’s what’s weird about it. One girl in Toronto stood there for ages with her boobs out. Everyone just thinks I’m a raging lesbian and I want to see everyone’s boobs. Sorry, I’m not.

Even if she was gay, I’m sure it’d still be completely bizarre to have topless fans standing in front of you while you play. I wonder if Tegan and Sara have to deal with this. Annoying catcalls, sure, but I’ve never noticed crazed topless fans at their show — maybe I’m just at the wrong ones.

While she maintains she’s not a gay lady, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see her (and bandmate Ben Langmaid) live.

Jackson says, “I don’t care who comes to the gigs or who likes the music, as long as it’s for the music and not because they fancy you. That’s a s–t reason to come to a gig.”

Right, so keep your bras one, ladies. It’ll be easier to dance.

La Roux’s latest single, “I’m Not Your Toy,” was released yesterday. Just because the lyrics say “This is not another girl meets boy” doesn’t mean she’s saying it’s a girl meets girl. Perhaps they should consider a remix: “I’m Not Your Gay.”
