Joan Jett gets named the greatest female electric guitaristThe new documentary It Might Get Loud, which is now in theaters, celebrates some of the most famous electric guitarists. Featuring Jack White, Jimmy Page and U2's The Edge, the music doc is, not surprisingly completely lacking of women. In response to this so-typical-it's-ridiculous boys club, Elle magazine compiled a list of 12 Greatest Female Electric Guitarists. While 12 seems like a drop in the bucket compared to all the male musicians who are consistently over-praised, this list of often under-rated women is nice to see, especially since it's not in a music magazine — you know, because Rolling Stone's Women in Rock issues tend to be more insulting than inspiring. Even more exciting about Elle's list is its queer friendliness. Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein makes the cut, while Joan Jett tops it.
Of the legendary rocker, Elle says:
Speaking of The Runaways (which was previously referred to as Cherry Bomb), Jett herself recently expressed her excitement over the film in an interview with Billboard.com: It reinforces my love for the band and the fact I think it was an extremely important band, regardless of our level of success in America. It just reinforces my love of the whole time and of the band and what we did and how it was implausible and improbable at the same time. On Kristen Stewart's dedication to the role, Jett said: Kristen was so into it, into the whole vibe of doing this. I think she felt a weight and a responsibility to interpret it correctly. She was really serious about it and was watching me and asking me all sorts of question, from speech aspects to watching my body language, watching where I stood, watching my guitar playing. She really worked hard to get it right.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jett is working on a new greatest hits album for next year that may also include new material she's been working on. Are you psyched for The Runaways film? What about Elle's list — who is missing? Submitted by on August 28, 2009 - 12:00pm. |

I'm a little bummed that it
I'm a little bummed that it was mostly a rock 'n' roll list. Deborah Cox, who plays mostly blues, is a phenomenal guitarist. She really got me into blues. I feel like the list should have been more eclectic.
I was never a mess. I was just faking it.
so excited!

Can't say I'm not impressed...
you're right about Feist
watch this performance of it, from 2.55 onwards...

Excellent
What a great clip. Thanks for sharing. There's so much to love about Feist...
She gave one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I love it when a girl with a guitar can both wield and axe AND actually give a bit of banter with the audience.
I'm glad that Kelley Deal
I'm glad that Kelley Deal has snuck in there - and I KNOW she's an identical twin - but they really should have researched the picture better - that's Kim!
Where's Bonnie Raitt? PJ Harvey? And Tanya Donnelly should be in there too.
Good call...
MIA

I can't wait for the movie!
I can't wait for the movie! Although I don't know who I'll see it with... none of my friends listen to the Runaways =(

SO psyched for the Runaways.
I am the only one...
..who is offended by the very existence of this list? What in heaven's name has gender to do with playing guitar? Is it a physically challenging activity, like tennis? I've been playing for a long time, and while I wouldn't make anyone's "greatest" list, I never found physical strength to be a factor.
I do understand that some feel that women have received short shift in the open lists - perhaps Elle would have done better to compose a list they feel would have been more fair, including women. But to print a segregated list only contributes to the feeling that women aren't quite ready to - how to put it - play with the big boys, and brings a little of the feeling of Dr. Johnson's walking dog....
Anyway, Joan Jett? She's wonderful, but hardly for her guitar playing, which - does what it needs to do.
PJ Harvey, now, could have been on any list. Underrated player.
I agree
Lita Ford? Are they
Lita Ford? Are they serious?
Unfortunately look through any guitar mag and you'll see the sad lack of women featured anytime, regardless of the playing style.
My 2 cents...give me Linda Perry any day.
Kaki King
Exactly
She is amazing and there is no one to compare to her.
If I could have a fraction of fraction of her talent I would be in Guitar Heaven!
Matt's world you just live in it!
ELECTRIC!
Master of all guitars
O yeah!
I haven't seen the list, is Kaki King really not on there?!?
If I dared to make a list Carrie Brownstein, Kaki King and Mary Timony would most definitely rank pretty friggin high!

A New Joan Jett Album
I'm stoked. I'm glad she's gettin' her props where it is due. I can't wait for a new album to drop.
I got request can you please interview Doria Roberts if you hadn't. If you had, I don't recall. Some out celebs get way too much attention on this site.
Orianthi
I read about her sometime last year, I think. I was pretty impressed to see her play. Good skills.
Oh, Jennifer Batten. I attended a clinic half a life time ago. I knew then I wasn't cut out to be a soloist (when it comes to guitar playing). Pretty rad.
And I agree on including Nancy Wilson :)

I can't believe the list missed
How?
Shoulda had Kaia Wilson on
The Butchies
interesting.......
unfortunatly , they focus solely on the electric players.....for , i feel , if you throw an electric into Emily;s hands (indigo girls ) she'd give lita ford and the others listed a good run for the money......
i'm also wondering why Joan Jett is on the list at all......she's a rythm guitar player.....not a lead. but ,hey , what do i know.....
given
Absolutely
Bonnie Raitt at the very least--Nancy Wilson.
and it is offensive about a list being for women (as someone here said), yet this has always been the case that women were not even considered serious or exceptional guitar players (it's a male ego territorial thing). I guess they don't even consider acoustic guitar? Of course, it is nonsense, but the reality is this whole thing stems from women (historically) being held back from certain gender restricted pursuits such as published writings, art, music, and then later when women broke that barrier, female bands or individual performers were not taken seriously (like they are "new" to it by male standards).
I remember Wynonna Judd (another fantastic guitarist and vocalist) talking about this in a recorded commentary with greats like Emmy Lou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt and Roseanne Cash. Most women got their break from the country western/rock/pop crossover genre. And then there were the few rock and roll women that are the icons we think of, but it was always hard for them too.
The eternal Vixen
The movie!!!
I can't wait to see the movie!!!
Joan Jett and the blackhearts was my very first concert! She was incredible! She was in Mtl last year but I couldn't make it... Stoopid work...
Kristen Stewart seems like a really good choice. She looks like she'll be able to bring out the rawness that is Joan Jett.
Kaki
BOOYAH!
thats great enough said.
My list
mmm Joan!
yep she can rock that guitar and looks damn sexy at it. I would've included Kathleen Hanna; and although her "weapon" of choice is not the electric but I would've also included on the list, Melissa Etheridge... she is damn good at it.
Mmm that Nancy Wilson is so sexy.

Joan Jett
Joan Jett is awesome, I agree to some extent. Although Chrissie Hynde should be up there.
