Is a "Roseanne" remake in the works?

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a huge fan of Roseanne — and not just because of Sara Gilbert. (Though I really did have a soft spot for Darlene in junior high, and had no idea why. Go figure.)

When the show ended its nine-year run in 1997, a little piece of me died. No longer could I laugh at the comedic struggles of a middle class family. Life seemed too easy. People around me were, for the most part, functional and normal. In other words, boring.

But, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Roseanne Barr is about to grace us all with her presence on primetime again. That should be exciting, but honestly, I have mixed feelings about this. It's pretty unlikely that a new comedy can even come close to competing with the genius that was the blue-collar, mid-American family.

And I worry that they're going to try too hard to make it Roseanne 2.0. Already, Barr is teaming up with one of the Roseanne producers, Caryn Mandabach. The details, thus far, are that they are working on "a family comedy in which [Barr] would play the matriarch." Uh-oh.

A couple of differences that give this new show some hope are Arrested Development's Jim Vallely's involvement (he's writing the script) and that it's likely going to be on Fox, not ABC. So, there's that.

I'll definitely give Roseanne's new show a shot. But I have a feeling I'll be sticking with the original show's reruns. I mean, I just this year decided I was OK with the whole two Beckys thing.

Okay, personally I want to be excited about what they could come up with, but it seems like anything smart that comes on the air lately doesn't last long so they might resort to slapstick jokes that you can laugh at without thinking first.  Which would be alienating to anyone who actually has any expectations about this so... I'm just gonna cross my fingers and hope for the best... I mean, this could either be a light at the end of the tee-vee tunnel or a huge pit covered with debris that you fall into and sit sullenly at the bottom of wondering why you ever ventured down the path of hope in the first place...

So true!

I got all 9 seasons, but I'm also skeptical about it. I mean it's more than 10 years after the original show, too long for a show to ever become the same thing again. I'm hoping for the best though, I really liked the show.

Did any other tv shows do this? Make a comeback after more than a decade? I know movies can suck harder the more sequels/remakes there will be, with a few exceptions.

Roseanne was an amazing show... there's no way it'll ever be done justice, but there's always that glimmer of possibility...

hehe, and they had great characters too-everyone who has ever known me has compared me to Darlene...

Even BEFORE they knew I was gay.

hahaha, and yeah... sequels have a tendency to suck... Note "Land Before Time 67292: The Tired Plotline Changes Scenery"..........

This could turn out one of two ways

Very, very good or really really  bad.  I do mean that whole heartedly.  The worst thing she could do is make a rip off of her own show.  The best thing she could shoot for is something radically different.  (It can be radically different even if the bones are the same.)  But I fear for this because she's gotten weird in her old age and there's still a massive ego to combat.  Anyone else notice the incredibly large heads in hollywood lately?  Larger than normal?  And the bigger they get, the weirder they are...

So true...

And inspiration comes in spurts... even if it's good it'll be good in a completely different way...

Would give it a shot

I loved the show, so I would be willing to give a 2.0 version a shot.  Although, this time they would have to make the Darlene character gay - I'm sure if they did a "where are they now", Darlene would have ditched David for some cute, smart businesswoman who was able to keep her in line.

i really really hope it happens!!

roseanne is one of the only shows i watch anymore, besides reality tv. sitcoms are not good anymore. if she can make a relevant show that caters again to issues that interest we the viewers, i am so down. i love love roseanne!! the show i mean.

Liz I feel the same way

Liz I feel the same way with the exception of 30 rock I have no sitcom I feel I want to watch every week.

Arrested development was an amazing show and it got cancelled!I never did get the chance to watch it throughly before it was cancelled.Considering fox was the network it was on it was likely the victim of constant poorly advertised timeslot changes.

I think what is missing for most sitcoms is actors/actresses that play well off of each other.

Well... If Bill Cosby can do it...

I'll give the 'New' Roseanne a shot. I loved the show but I got into it near the end and caught up in syndication. I tend to be the black cloud of good TV. Everytime I get into a show, it is usually late in the game, and it gets cancelled within 2 seasons. I'm hoping to break the cycle with NCIS and House.

But Bill Cosby was able to pull it off. After 'The Cosby Show' ended in '92, he tried his hand again with 'Cosby' and that lasted about 4 years--95 episodes to be exact (I had never seen it--wish I had with Madeline Kahn). Hell, he even got Phylicia Rashad to play his wife again!

Roseanne Barr is a control freak so I think she would have a pretty good handle on it and not let it fall prey and become like the crap we are offered now.

It has been a long time since we had a good and funny family based sitcom (not saying family entertainment). It died along with Roseanne and Married With Children. It's time for Roseanne to step up and show everyone what good TV actually is.

no!

Roseanne was one of the best shows on television ever! I hope they don't try and spoil its memory by trying to remake such a memorable tv show of the 90's. I think the themes in the show still hold relevant today (as in family struggles to pay bills/keep jobs) so if anything just buy the dvd's, lol.

I'll give it a shot...

I don't know about this whole idea. It kind of sounds like a recipe for disaster. I have always been completely in love with the original show but maybe they should just leave well enough alone. I will definantly give it a shot because i guess you never know, it could be a huge hit.
