"Entertainment Weekly" nails its list of The Top 24 Tomboys

EW.com put out a list of its 24 favorite TV/movie tomboys today, and I must say: it's pretty gay. Well, technically there's only Gina Gershon's Bound character, Corky, that was officially gay, but the rest are ones we just know weren't that into guys. (Sure, Juno, Michael Cera may have knocked you up, but you're so not fooling us.)

Some other totally gay standouts on the list: Nancy McKeon's Jo from The Facts of Life. She was basically the epitome of a tomboy: she rode a motorcycle, had the leather jacket/ponytail combo and was a mechanic. The fact that she wound up at an all-girls boarding school did not help the lesbian speculation.

Lori Petty's Kit in A League of Their Own makes the list, but let's face it: many of Lori Petty's characters fit right in as well (hello, Tank Girl, Prey for Rock 'n Roll, etc.) However, Kit was endearing in an innocent, girls-can-totally-play-baseball kind of way. Plus her fastball certainly gives her some more tomboy credibility.

I may have mentioned my love of Sara Gilbert as Darlene on Roseanne recently, so I was pretty glad to see she made the list. Surprised? No way. Remember the time Darlene went dress shopping and how awkward she looked? Could have had something to do with Gilbert, herself, sure, but Darlene was the ultimate tomboy, only with long, ridiculously curly hair. Tomboy is more than a look — it's an attitude, and Darlene had plenty of that.

Kit isn't the only athlete to be considered a favorite tomboy character. Parminder Nagra's Jess in Bend It Like Beckham is right up there with her. You may think trying to win over Jonathan Rhys Meyers would disqualify one from the running, but Jess did go off and secretly join a women's soccer team, and we all know about women's soccer.

The list also includes notable boyish girls like Mary Stuart Masterson as Watts the bad-ass drummer in Some Kind of Wonderful and Soleil Moon Frye's Punky Brewster (aka my first girl-crush).

But the ultimate, ultra tomboy included is none other than Joyce Hyser's Terry from Just One of the Guys. You can't really beat the wannabe journalist in drag for this spot. She cut her hair, bound her chest, chugged beer and dated girls. Basically, she was awesome.

Check out the rest of the list and share your favorites. Who should be included? I must say, I have a problem with Ally Sheedy in High Art not being included. EW must not be up on their lesbian movies.

Xena

I've been a little angry at EW lately because they've been consistently leaving Xena off of their lists (Butt kicking babes with no Xena?  A lot of the butt kicking babes on that list wouldn't be around without Xena).  When I first saw this list, I was trying to figure out if I would be mad if Xena wasn't on it.  She's about as butch as you can get (and even dresses up as a guy and looks good doin' it), but she runs around in a miniskirt. As mentioned in the article, tomboy is an attitude though and I think that Xena definitely qualifies.  In some ways, however, Xena defies categorization so I decided to forgive them for their oversight.

I think it's weird to call

I think it's weird to call a fully grown woman, like over 30, a tomboy, so I wasn't looking for Xena. But they didn't put her on the list of butt kickers? Really? She is the original, definitive butt-kicking babe.

I went looking for Peppermint Patty and Jo March, and they were both there. The only major omission I can think of is another Mary Stuart Masterson character--Idgie from Fried Green Tomatoes.

i love PJ from my boys. she's the best :) and peppermint patty is the best peanut character ever!

OMG

Joygasm!  On all accounts.

A League of Their Own is my all time favorite movie (I have the entire movie memorized line for line), and I completely agree with them choosing Kit.

Heh Jo from the Facts of Life- another of my all time favorites and it's because of Jo's character.  I own season's 1-3 and have been waiting impatiently for season 4 (hopefully it will come out).  Roseanne is my second favorite sitcom ever, ahem, Darlene is the reason for that.

I love Bend it Like Beckham, I've seen it countless times.  EW hit these choices on the head.  I was a tomboy as a kid, now I'm a 25 year old tomboy :P

"...but Jess did go off and secretly join a women's soccer team, and we all know about women's soccer."

hahahahha, if only it was a little more true. my team is probably the straightest group of girls on the planet. great.

Yeah

Same with my softball team! Where are all the gay girls in these so called stereotypically "gay" sports I'd like to know! I call shenanigans!

Ahh... I see the F&ck-up Fairy has visited us again.

Just One of the Guys!!!

I LOOOOVVE that movie! I recently rediscovered it on youtube and watched the whole thing.

It is so much queerer and more awesome than I think it was intended to be. Love it.

A drag to be a slave to the male sex drive

Watts from Some Kind Of Wonderful is one of my favorite characters of all time. I remember being 13 years old and thinking she was so much hotter than Amanda Jones.

"Have you ever seen a girl with a drumstick shoved up her nose?"

My new crush is Ziva David from NCIS. She kind of qualifies as a tomboy doesn't she?

My favourite of all time is Randy Dean.

I can't stop smiling when I'm watching Laurel Holloman in 'TITAOTGIL' :)))

Samantha in Who's the Boss

I thought she was awesome as a kid.  She even had the perfect name...Sam.  Of course, she eventually grew up and wasn't nearly as cool, but Alyssa Milano will always have a special place in my heart ;).

No Idgie?!

So they can include MSM's Watts, but not Idgie Threadgoode? I thought she was the ultimate 'tomboy'
Natazzz's picture

Watts

Oh Watts. *Sigh* She will always be my favourite tomboy.

When I first saw Some kind of wonderful, I wanted to learn how to play the drums too. And wear boys' boxer shorts.

Have to agree...

with MANY of the comments on the EW site - what, no Starbuck?!?  She's SUCH a tomboy, even if she is a little slutty.  :)  Also agree that Idgie is a glaring omission.  Not a bad list, though.  Happy to see Jo there.  I remember watching the episode of Facts of Life, when it originally aired, where she makes her first appearance.  *swoon*  I will even confess that I read Blaire/Jo femslash now and then.  But don't tell anyone.

Ditto on Starbuck. She had way more attitude than Punky Brewster

Jodie Foster and Kristy McNichol

No tomboy list is complete without them.

moony's picture

Yes, indeed..

Jodie Foster in the original Freaky Friday.  She stirred my very young self in ways I did not understand.  In fact, Annabel may be my root.  ;)

Ironically, Lindsay Lohan

Ironically, Lindsay Lohan who acted in the remake of Freaky Friday is also gay. haha.

What about Christina Ricci

What about Christina Ricci character in "Now And Then"? She bound her breasts, wore flannel and got into fights. Total tomboy.

Rosie O' Donnel!

And ironically enough, Rosie O' Donnel played the grown up version of Christina Ricci's character!....
Brutal_Romance's picture

and

and that was a really cruel move from the director, i almost flung something at my TV when i was a kid and Christian Ricci grew up to be O'Donnel. WHY OH WHY?!
Zbornak's picture

Jo and Punky? AWESOME!

Two of my favorite fictional tomboys made the list! That totally made my day considering that besides Dorothy "Tootie" Ramsey, Denise Huxtable, and Diane Chambers, Punky was my T.V rolemodel growing up and Jo was part of my favorite "should have been a couple" paring on T.V(Blair was the other half).

What's the definition of a tomoby?

how is megan fox a tomboy? is it cuz she fixed a car? that's hardly enough to qualify in my book.

But i totally agree with a handful of those characters.

Oh, Watts.

When I was reading this on EW last night, I was clicking and waiting for Watts to appear every next slide. I'm so glad we have non-sporty tomboys - sport is not the only thing that makes a girl a tomboy!

Michie87's picture

yeeeah Juno and Masterson

yeeeah Juno and Masterson HAD to be there!- I love love love Some Kind of Wonderful only because shes there ^^. She rawcks it!, it would have been better if she had ended up fallin in love with another girl but hell, Watts was just amazing and as Chatelaine said, is always good to see a non sporty tomboy :D>. Whos with me? Kristen Stewart could have been there too?..she looks like she might be one too, kindsa like Paige, they walk the same, and their wardrobe of preference screams out tomboy all over. Or again, is it me daydreaming?.

happykt's picture

I can't believe they left off Jodi Foster!!!

I'm the same age as Jodi Foster and even as a young girl I recognized her as a very cool tomboy.  In almost all of the films where Jodi starred in (as young girl) she played a tough, smart, confident, smart non-girlie girl who didn't mind getting dirty, wearing pants, and just being super cool.  Freaky Friday epitomizes Jodi Foster at her tomboyish best.  Paper Moon, Candleshoe, and The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane are also good examples where she played a tough, and not very girlie. Jodi assumed her 'grown up' tough girl persona in The Brave One.

And to me Xena isn't butch but a macho femme (as coined in the L Word.)  Butch is defined in several online dictionaries as a woman who is markedly masculine in appearance, which Xena ain't (imho).

Sandra Bullock

Watts, oh Watts. Sigh.

Yeah, and what's with leaving out Idgie Threadgoode?

My other picks: Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality, Angelina Jolie in Hackers, Cynthia Nixon in SATC, and Tina Fey in 30 Rock.

Brutal_Romance's picture

DARLENE!!!

Im just glad Darlene made the list, she was officialy my first girl-crush at the age of 5 or 6, couldnt have enough of her. she can be a gentelman one moment, a greek goddess the next. *sigh*

and ofcourse, Christian Ricci is forgotten you guys, from the movie "Now and Then?", I couldnt control the flutters in my stomach when she was on.

i gues long-haired tomboys are the the best really, according to my personal opinion that is.

faithless88's picture

definately ziva david, ncis

i have to totally agree with collettelala ziva david is definately a tomboy. and a damn sexy one too. lol. any girl who can scare the likes of the hardened criminals and qsychotic killers had to qualify as a tomboy. i mean the girl does kick arse.

also think that Missy Peregrym as Hayley Graham in 'Stick it' was definately a tomboy even if she did end up wearing the skin tight liatards (which she looked very hot in i must say)

EW comments

for anyone who read the comments at the EW site -- can we all join together to open a paypall account for Joseph so we can help him buy back his sense of humor?  cuz it's either that or we'll read about him (or her, who knows these things for sure) opening fire in a fast food restaurant pretty soon.

Jeannette's picture

Idgie and Roberta

Idgie Threadgoode, another Masterson role, NEEDS to be on this list -- another gay character, even if the movie directors tried to make it covert.  Roberta, Christina Ricci's character in Now and Then, also needs to be on this list!
