Emily Blunt wants to be a gay iconThough much (OK, basically all) of the supposed "lesbian affair" between Emily Blunt and Mary Lynn Rajskub was cut out of Sunshine Cleaning, Blunt is still striving to be a gay icon.
In a recent interview, the 26-year-old English actress said: I'm going to become a gay icon. Have I ever flirted with that side? No, never, but I do remember girl crushes on other girls in your year group at school. There are these girls who are magnetic and beautiful and so cool. You just feel yourself shrink in their presence. Uh, yeah, that's called a straight-up crush, Emily. Regardless, she seems to be well on her way to gay icon status, if you ask me. Just look how close she gets with her co-stars. Remember her steamy Sapphic role in 2004's My Summer of Love? That's most likely what put her on most of our radars to begin with.
Then, she went on to earn a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress for her bitchy fashionista role in The Devil Wears Prada. Pretty gay-friendly, right — not to mention her torrid love/hate relationship with her co-star Anne Hathaway's character.
Also, she dated Michael Buble. That definitely had to win her over some gay men (or at least once they broke up). Most recently, she made an appearance on The Simpsons as Lisa's close, Heavenly Creatures-esqe BFF.
Emily has a lot of films in the works right now, including The Young Victoria, in which she stars as the, um, young Queen Victoria, the thriller Curiosity and she'll play Juliet in Gnomeo and Juliet. Shakespeare + gnomes = gay! Am I right?
What do you think of Emily Blunt's comment: Is she just trying to get the gays to pay attention? (Doesn't she know most of us already have been?) What does it take for someone to become a gay icon? Submitted by on June 30, 2009 - 4:00pm. |

She is stunning..
She is stunning.. absolutely stunning. And as someone who use to do housekeeping, now I have to see Sunshine Cleaning.

Um
I doubt she'll be a gay icon as she is neither gay nor a fantastic diva. Doesn't she have anything better to do that spout this nonsense. I thought Sunshine Cleaning looked good from the posters but thanks for letting me know it's watered down nonsense so I can avoid going to see that film.
Changing definition
At this rate my mother and
HaHa
....well at least your mom and dog are toooootaaallllly hot....
sorry, it was too easy and i'm too drunk.....
Funny
I'm sensing a bit of humor in her 'gay icon' comments, nonsense can be very effective in that regard. I'll take her comment as a declaration of alliance with the LGBT community. I'm all for it if she wants to be an advocate. No, her image may not necessarily warrant a commemorative drag queen, no, she may not be gay (despite the 'kind of gay' desire to be adored by gay people ) but , I think a third avenue toward her own star on the gay walk of fame is to use her public voice to be an outspoken advocate for gay rights and equality. So,step up Emily B.
Yes.
That's exactly how I read it. I don't think she's trying to be the next Divine Miss M, this is just her way of supporting the LGBT community. Not a very clear way, but I'll take support for our community no matter in what shape it manifests itself, thank you very much.
Well..
Lucy Lawless is widely accepted as a "gay icon" or "lesbian icon", and she's neither gay or a "fantastic diva", I don't think. She's extremely NOT diva-ish, in fact.
I don't really think those are the only criteria that allows one to be given such a title.
She seems pretty chilled and
I'm sure
I love Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt made the "gay icon" comment "self-mockingly" in this interview.
After reading the original article
Me too. I thought more
Exactly.
It sounds more as if it's said both in a self-deprecating manner, but also a subtle mocking of the reporter. She's played a lesbian twice, she's played a straight woman a helluva lot more times - so it's a silly comment from the reporter and from the image I've gotten off her she's got some smarts, enough to make a joke out of it at least.
"Arrange whatever pieces come your way."
Well she can be my gay icon
Well she can be my gay icon anyday ;)
Mwahxxx
yeah, I agree
Yeah, was going to say the
She was brilliant in
haha
She's got it...ok with me.
Totally loved her in 'Devil Wears Prada'. Did a lot of rewinding!
Given the right woman, she may fall into the 'bi' category. Straight women with girl crushes are so freakin'HOT. It's the way they look at you and they have a sexy touch. Drama or comedy, she is a great actress.
If Emily had only appeared on the L Word as a hot lesbian lover...BOOM, instant ICON. I could see her with Alice or Tina. Maybe next tv series, if THAT ever happens again!! Please God.
she's got those quirky but smooth qualities
Some people just automatically make it on to my it's cool you want to be an icon in the gay community list even though you're straight, and she's one..
it's not just the sexy Brit thing either, she's just pretty cool in my book.
I like the roles she plays, and she's got a bit of those quirky but smooth operator qualities like Zooey Deschanel or Ellen Page. The ability to deliver dry humor with nonchallance is sexycool and always scores points.
I just like to say Michael Buble:
Michael Buble. Michael Buble. Michael Buble. Now say it like George W.= "Michael Buble".
I absolutely love Emily Blunt. She stole the show for me in "The Devil Wears Prada".
I love that she is quoted as saying she wants to be the next gay icon. This is precisely the kind of humour necessary to promote all-inclusiveness.
ummmm I don't care what she
YES! Emily Blunt YES!
Oh yes
link to a great interview
Here's a recent interview with her in The Guardian. Intriguing. And with a stunning photo.

Comments in context
I think it's really important when quoting an article that the comments be in context, and as presented here they are not. What it seems to have led to is a number of people taking a jab at Emily Blunt for something she hasn't even said.
The paragraphs in question, taken straight from the Guardian interview at http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/jun/21/emily-blunt-interview are:
"Sunshine Cleaning, out this week, is a classic of the indie genre: funny, affecting and featuring the requisite whimsical child drop-out who thinks he can speak to heaven through a car radio. The storyline also sees Blunt's character, Norah, becoming emotionally entangled with a lesbian. I point out that this is the second time, after My Summer of Love, that Blunt has played the focus of same-sex adulation.
"Yes, I'm going to become a gay icon," she says self-mockingly. "Have I ever flirted with that side? No, never [but] I do remember girl crushes on other girls in your year group [at school]. There are these girls who are magnetic and beautiful and sooo cool. You just feel yourself shrink in their presence. I absolutely remember how powerful 16-, 17-year-old girls can be. I look at them now - my little sister is 18 - and they do seem very grown-up. And taller - I mean what is that? My brother is 6ft 4ins now. They all seem to be that tall."
For those who have been put off seeing Sunshine Cleaning because of the supposedly cut lesbian content, do yourself a favour and go see it anyway. It's a fantastic movie, with fantastic acting particularly by Blunt and Amy Adams and also by Mary Lynn Rajskub and the entire supporting cast. The relationship between Blunt's character and Rajskub's character is sweet and tender and complex and really nicely portrayed, even without any overt lesbianism and Adams and Blunt have an amazing sister dynamic going on.
Credit where credit is due, Blunt has already starred in the lesbian movie My Summer of Love, so she doesn't appear to be one to shy away from lesbian content, so taking one short sentence out of context and using that to label her with any kind of anti-lesbian or lesbian-popularity-train sentiment is far too harsh.
who wouldn't want to be a gay icon?
As Sandrah Oh said on Go! on CBC Radio 1 the other day (I'm paraphrasing), gays (as a subcultural group) have discriminating tastes and high standards--but if you meet them, we're intensely loyal.
And isn't that what every artist wants? to meet and exceed high standards and have a group of loyal and devoted fans?
I don't think there's anything wrong with that statement, I don't think she's pandering, but more importantly, I also just don't think it's that interesting. Get in line, Emily.
I'm thinking she's thinking
I don't know about the
I don't know about the whole icon thing... but I love her anyway.
"we've got to live no matter how many skies have fallen"
uh, whatever
i love her whether or not she wants to be a gay icon.
Gay icon? Really?
She is so hot she can be
She is so hot she can be whatever she wants. I remember watching My Summer of Love, and the scene in the bed where they flash to her eyes... so gorgeous. And the silhouette type stance at the window... with her accent. I mean that movie is awful, but she is worth the watch twenty times over.
Yeah she had me at castrated... or catatonic.
All in favor..
emily blunt
I love her
don't worry emily, in my book you ARE a gay icon :)
Sunshine Cleanung was wonderful and you seem to be very cool. Everything's perfect :)
Mehhh
I still think she has a long way to becooming a gay icon but she has definately done some good roles like My Summer of Love and the Jane Austen Book Club. I think she'll just have to stop stressing about becoming a gay icon and just be a good actress with diverse roles and the gay community will hopefully give her the attention she deserves. Also I really loved her comment about My Summer of Love:
"Whether they like to admit it or not; everyones got a bit of Tamsin in them."
"It's in transition."
LOVE HER
I must say, she was
I must say, she was gorgeous in sunshine cleaning. I watched it with my girlfriend, and we were both like: oh she gotta be gay. The tiny tiny scene where there was just the slight hint that, yes, she is gay (the character I mean) was enough for the movie. Don't get me wrong, I love gay scenes, obviously. However, it was not the point of the movie. I thought it was rather cool that they just put it in there, as her being a normal person (apart from the crime scene clean up thing, lol) who happens to be gay.
Anyways, I was just gonna say that I think she's rather cool. I don't think she's all that pretty..but she has this thing over her that makes her very interesting. And the clothing style used in Sunshine Cleaning for her character suites her very well!
I just don't know what she wants to do as a 'gay icon'. Is she just gonna do her regular stuff, and then throw a comment in there like: oh yeah, also. Love the gays!
She doesn't even really know what we're all about. She wants to be a gay icon, but she compares 'us' with her crushes she had on girls in her class just because they were cool and she was not. I think that's a rather weird comparison...

Know that it won't do me wrong. Need it like my favorite song.
O EMILY
Shes had my heart since i first saw her :)
Emily + Anne
I'm Sure They're Taking Applications
I'm sure there's probably one or two spots left for gay icons. A person just needs the right credentials; a pretty gay haircut, sensible shoe wearer, and have or own a vagina. I think with time and possible converting to lesbianism, Ms Blunt will do us proud!

But you won't even try"

Emily Blunt!!!
I loveeed her on that movie, My Summer Of Love... but what a biatch for leading on poor "Mona" poor thing fell heavy for her... Hahahaha when Mona was choking her underwater... priceless... hahaha I hope she becomes a super gay icon... soooo gay on gay on....

Sunshine Cleaning
I just caught Sunshine Cleaning this evening and it was awesome. Both Emily Blunt and Amy Adams protrayed their characters so well that I was touched watching them. It is a truly fantastic movie.
And if Emily Blunt wants to be a gay icon, why not? And if she's gay friendly, even better! Especially when she is not one to shy away from gay roles.
PS: her dressing in Sunshine Cleaning was wow.. totally gay for me :))) I liked that her relationship with "Lynn" in the movie was so subtle. Too bad most scenes got cut out though, but still great!
She's got it!
She was sooooooo convincing in My Summer of Love
I can't believe people are
I can't believe people are complaining about her wanting to be a gay icon. OMG She is supporting the community go save the hate and whiny stuff for those against GLBT people.
Since when and why are icons limited to "divas" and gays? STFU
well
i really like Emily Blunt and I dont think she's doing anything wrong or inappropriate by wanting to be a gay icon. She seems really lovely so I'm just gonna see how this all plays out.
:)
Ra Ra Ra
She gets my vote!!!!
