“X-files” comes to WonderCon

Last weekend at at WonderCon, a few lucky souls in San Francisco witnessed the trailer for the new X-Files movie. It remains to be seen if this is a movie that should happen — I am not a huge fan of the first — but catching a glimpse of it over at Cinematical.com, I'm sure I sat at my computer with an dorky fangirl grin on my face. Anticipation is sweet.

Retrocrush.com was on the scene to interview Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny afterward about the movie and their post-X-Files perspectives. Duchovny talks a lot (why am I not surprised?), but Anderson managed to get a few words in. Here are some highlights. And a snap judgment: Duchovny needs a haircut.

First, the news is that the movie will be a throwback to the beginning of the series; there will be mythology (as is hinted at in the trailer) but the film will be a standalone project for those who've never seen the series. And for those who stopped watching during the last two seasons, when even Annabeth Gish wasn't enough to compensate for Scully's annoyingly endless weeping.

No, Agent Reyes is not in the film. But she's pretty.

One question I found interesting: "Why is the show still relevant? Why are the characters still relevant? At the time it seemed like it was a very turn-of-the-century, millennial narrative."

ANDERSON: It'd be interesting to know, if we had started the series in 2008, what would have been happening. When they started it, there was something very timely about it. Whether it would take in this day and age, I have no idea. I think that all the elements that made it what it was contribute to why it was successful, and why people are interested in seeing more of it.

Let's see. A show about two people searching for personal and public truths, set in a time when people distrust the government's truth-telling capacity and wonder what dirty secrets might be hidden under official policies and sugar-coated rhetoric. Some things are just timeless.

On whether it is frustrating to be so highly identified with a character:

ANDERSON: There's certain times when my focus has been on different things. Like at a charity event on another continent. And that's all they want to talk about, they don't want to talk about the charity event. Yeah, that gets frustrating. Or when I'm trying to promote something else and 75 percent of the interview wants to go back to the series. It's frustrating, but it is what it is. I wouldn't have the choices to do the things I want to do today if it weren't for the series.

I do have a little sympathy for this. And when she does open her mouth, she has to be careful.

When asked about the experience of being at the panel and mingling with fans, both Anderson and Duchovny seem to have enjoyed the experience. I know, what else would they say? But it's sort of cute that they might even entertain the idea people wouldn't come out for the movie. I mean, I knew what was coming and I still sat through Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.

ANDERSON: It's a wonderful feeling to know that there's people out there who are going to show up and actually see this film when it comes out. Their enthusiasm and their desire to see it. I think that is rewarding, and a bit of a relief.

DUCHOVNY: It was always my hope that we would get to do one of these every 5 or 6 years. When I was getting off the television show I wasn't like "Screw the show, screw these characters, screw you!" I would love to keep doing it, if I could come back every now and then. I love working with Gillian, I love Chris. I love the characters. If we can pull that off, that'd be great. And if not? I'm perfectly happy with the amount of work we've done as Mulder and Scully, you know? (laughs) We've done a lot. So in a way, I felt that this was "win/win". If it continues on, then it's fantastic. If it goes away ... well, then we did a lot.

I can't imagine how the movie will play out, given the ending of the series. Will Scully and Mulder's son, whose lame story line disappeared from the final episodes, turn up? Will they pretend he never existed? Will they still be on the run? Will they be pursuing the truth? I hope the anticipation isn't the most thrilling part of the movie, but I'm there. Ain't It Cool News has a blow-by-blow of the WonderCon panel presentation if you want more.

    X Files 2...yes!

I can't stand the last two seasons but the first seven were so good, well 6&7 suffered a little bit, that I can't wait for the premier! Just the feeling I get from the cast it seems its going to be a good one. The time away from series probably has helped rather then hindered.

I know that I will be out there at the midnight showing. If I'm feeling really dorky I may wear a suit. :)

    The truth is out there...

I'm a huge fan of "The X-Files", the show and the movie.  Can't wait to see what they do with the second film.  It is even more relevant today, with the Bush administration, all the lies in the media, and the secret societies.  The truth is indeed out there, if you have the time and the courage to look for it.

    Fingers Crossed!

Hope it's good, though it can't be any worse than season 9, so I'm not too worried! It's still beyond me how a show that started so brilliantly, got screwed up so badly!

    Guh

    Scully...in...glasses.

    *poof*

I just exploded in a little ball of joy.

I will never get over how hot she is in glasses, or how hot she is in general.  Gillian Anderson is basically the prettiest person ever.  For serious.

    I'll see it

No question that I'll go and see this movie because I loved the monster of the week eps of the X-Files, and that's what this movie is. They got all bogged down in the alien government cover-up conspiracy thing and it hurt the show, especially after the first movie because they'd written themselves into a corner of no return. I want to see Scully again, Gillian Anderson standing on boxes to approximate height in the shot with whathisname. It's just so good to have her being big brained and explaining the obvious in rational scientific empirical crap to him and him poo-pooing it. And then something from outside any plausibility creeping into fruition and sucking out somebody's liver. Every 36 years. I am so there that I'm having difficulty maintaining corporeal integrity right here.

    woohoo!

I am absolutely, positively giddy with anticipation over the X-Files movie. Yes, S8-9 sucked, but for 7 seasons I absolutely adored this show. I've started rewatching S1, and it's truly as good, if not better, than I remember. Scully is such an indelible, admirable character, particularly when you compare her with the female characters in shows like Cashmere Mafia (or, dare I say it, The L Word) who lack anything remotely approaching Scully's strength, intelligence and fierceness. Rewatching S1 all these years later, and seeing Scully now from an adult perspective (I'm roughly her S1 age right now, I guess) has made me realize how much the character has inspired me and been a role model to me for the kind of adult woman I want to be. At the very least she's the reason I love getting to wear a suit every day to work.

OMG I have every episode up until 8 (cuz 8 and 9 SUCKED) on VHS because i was nerdy and recorded them offa F/X. (Yeah that's right) So i was so stoked (while we're having throwback moments) about the new movie!! The first one was a bit of a dissappointment but as a loyal nerdy fan (who just replaced her DVD a week ago) i HAVE to see this one...me and my first girlfriend are still super nerdy over some X-Files. In fact, it's on RIGHT NOW. goodbye.

I don't like GA with long hair. Sorry but i'm not used to this.

I don't think Toechwood, as much as I like it, is up to X-Files-level greatness.

Where the F@CK have I been???

How did I miss this post??? LORD HOW COULD I???

I am a HUGE X-Files freak... I know all the chapters off by heart in both English and Spanish (I'm an insomniac!!!)...

And if there's someone to blame for season 8 and 9 that's Mr. David-I'm better than all this- Duchovny...

Indeed, thank you Mr. Duchovny for not wanting Ms. Anderson to get a raise after the first movie and be paid the exact same amount of money you had been earning the previous seasons...

Thank you Mr. Duchovny for thinking YOU were the only soul to the X-Files..Thank you for demanding more and more and more each season

Thank you for quittting and leaving the best thing you have ever done to become a second class actor on lame wannabe box office hits... (your ONLY redemption is Californication)...

Because, yeah... overall most episodes in season 8 and 9 were very poorly written but there are loads of others that are just about the same quality in previous seasons (I can give you tons of examples anytime)... thing is the interaction between Mulder and Scully is so amazing they could have just talked about the life cycle of the venus fly-trap and I would have been just as mesmerized...

The only problem with season 8 & 9 is that Mulder wasn't there... and when he was he was a stupid ass...

There were some pretty cool and scary episodes like "Roadrunners" and "Badlaa" (season 8), or "Daemonicus" and "Hellbound" (season 9)...

and yeah I agree... GET A HAIRCUT GILLIAN!!!
