Supergirl to land in "Smallville"Twenty-two-year-old Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort will join Smallville's cast as Supergirl, Clark's cousin, for the show's seventh season.
I, for one, think this is a great idea. Smallville has (mostly) managed to remain interesting (though the Lex/Lana/Clark arc is tired, tired, tired), but many a TV show I love has faltered as seasons progress. Maybe it's the actors getting sick of each other. Maybe it's the writers struggling to keep things fresh when so many story lines have played out. But the fact is, so many great shows hit a seventh-inning slump. (Yes, I mean you, Gilmore Girls and Buffy! The seventh season of The X-Files was an exception, but we all know what happened after that.) And who better to pinch hit than a pretty new superhero?
If you compare her to the DC Comics Supergirl incarnation, Vandervoot certainly has the looks to please even the most die-hard comic fans, though I can't speak to her talents.
Some of you fans of The N may have seen her in her biggest role to this point, Sadie from Instant Star, and she's earned her fantasy/sci-fi creds with short appearances in Goosebumps, The Dresden Files, and Mutant X. But I've managed to miss all of those. IMDb, however, reports that Vandervoot has a second degree black belt in karate, which ought to help her kick ass on and off the set.
(Caution – season seven story arc spoilers ahead.) Kara, aka Supergirl, appears in the season premiere and will play a major role. Born on Krypton, she possesses all of Clark's powers plus one – the ability to fly. Although the show's co-creator credits Vandervoot herself with "a combination of beauty, intelligence, a certain warmth, and great attitude," he promises that her on-screen alter ego won't be so friendly:
I sincerely hope we don't have angsty temper tantrums on the way, but that this means we might have a sexy, sassy Supergirl to cause a little trouble. Unfortunately, more entertaining trouble like, say, seducing Lois Lane, will have to wait for fan fiction. Rumor has it that Kara may find romance with Jimmy Olsen. At least we can look forward to a super smackdown. Probably maybe.

Woohoo! Supergirl!!! I'm
Woohoo! Supergirl!!! I'm actually pretty excited to hear about this, and I think it's a rather good bit of casting on the part of the Smallville producers. I've seen a few episodes of Instant Star, and she's not a terrible actress. Maybe I'll actually start to watch the show again this season.

Smallville Rocks!
Agreed. Almost completely.
agree
If it turns out that Chloe is gone for good I'll be extremely pissed off. Her and Lois are the best characters. If that is her power than that sucks.
Oh and I hope that Lana is finally gone, Clark needs to finally move on.
don't worry for chloe
i have it on good authority that chloe and lana (tho i could do without her) will be back next season. i actually thought her power was kinda cool but very impracticle. i have heard that michael rossenbaum (lex) is leaving the show but i'm not sure if that is after the next season or if last season was his last i don't know how they can have superman without lex luthor,

Supergirl
I was very excited when I first heard she was coming into Smallville.
Loved her entrance into Superman-Batman, her modern day incarnation is rocking so they will do her justice (no pun intended :-P)
She looks the part, can't wait to see her kick some tail, maybe thats how Clark gets rid of Bizzaro....and maybe she can finally teach Clark how to fly...though that contradicts that lame 'no tights no flights' line :-(
Looks good!
Hmmm...
I'm interested to see what they do with this character.
She does appear to look the part.
Have you ever noticed that during the most intimate scenes...the characters on "Smallville" seem to have "extra sparkle" in their eyes? Is it a camera trick? I've especially noticed that with Lana...
Oh
I thought Erin Kelly was playing SuperGirl.
I'm all about
Another new toy to take focus away from Clark
I could be excited about this turn of events but I'm not. It's just more reason to have Clark and Lex as supporting characters in their own show.
MASSIVE SEASON SIX SPOILERS COMING (because I have to get it off my chest)!
They have turned Superman into a man who kisses someone else's pregnant wife!? WTF is that?! Six seasons into this show and Clark is in exactly the same place as he started, mooning after Lana. Where's the progress?
Now Supergirl is arriving to teach Clark how to fly. How WRONG is that sentence? They really are determined to make him the p*ssiest Superman ever, why else would they be humiliating him like this?
At the end of last season Lana said to Clark "I can't believe I ever loved you" then went on to lie, put her "best" friend in peril by locking her in a freezer, attempted to blackmail Lionel and Lex's Doctor, snooped through her husbands files, cheated on her husband (by kissing Clark) whilst "pregnant", and to top it all off didn't really die, yet still she comes out of it smelling of pink roses. She makes me sick.
Clark is 20 now and should be training (as he promised in Fallout) but no. Now he's gotta moon over Lana (even though she's not really dead), look after his (younger!) cousin and look like a massive lameass because she has full control over her powers, help Chloe with her 'powers' that appeared out of her ass it goes on...
I LOVE what this show could have been but it has bitterly disapointed me time and time again. I SO wish it was different and actually did what it says on the box ie. Smallville - a show about a young Superman. But story lines revolving around one of the greatest hero (Supes) / villian (Lex Luthor) stories ever, it's sadly not. Adding new characters will simply take the story even further away from it's original premise and it's what the producers and writers do best.
It hurts to see what this show has turned into... *heads back to the corner to weep*
sex with Supergirl
yep, it's DC
laura vandervoort is
laura vandervoort is freaking hot.
she is an okay actress on "instant star" which is one of my favorite shows.
go her! maybe i'll actually watch smallville this year.
<3 maddy boom.

supergirl -- k.o.d.
has smallville really been on for seven seasons already? wow.
this vandervoot girl is really cute and she sounds like she can kick ass and all. but any time supergirl is introduced into a series or is given her own starring vehicle after a particularly successful superman run (i.e., helen slater -- upon whom i had a massive little-girl crush on in the '80s. she's so pretty!), it's the kiss of death! this must mean that the show's writers must be desperately grappling for any new kind of story-line at this point. supergirl is a great idea and all, and her powers are comparable to superman's in every way -- but her character just never seems to work out in any of the mediums that she's been used in. . . . which is sad, because her character has soo much potential.
