Kristen Stewart to shine in "Twilight"

Or perhaps that should be "to glow in the moonlight." The protagonist is, after all, a human in love with a vampire. For those of you not familiar with the series, Twilight will follow in the footsteps of the Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia franchises in attempting to turn a bestselling young adult fantasy series into a multimillion-dollar cinematic spectacle. Kristen Stewart will star as Bella Swan, one half of the starstruck lovers.

She's done some growing up since playing Jodie Foster's daughter in Panic Room.

I've never read the Twilight series, which is a recent phenomenon (the first book came out in 2005), but here's the premise, according to MTV.com. Teenage girl Bella falls for what she thinks is a normal boy, but finds herself in an abnormal situation: The object of her affections is a vampire. But not just any vampire, according to Stewart:

“He's so good and he's so soulful and he's just not a liar — you can feel pain from him. The cool thing about the story is that it's a seemingly wonderful fantasy — let's fall in love with vampires and live forever — but it's so much harder than that. Imagine living forever. Living one life is hard enough.”

If you were paying attention to TV in the 1990s, you've got to be thinking the same thing I am. Is the author of this series paying royalties to Joss Whedon?

But no; in an interview posted on Amazon.com, Stephenie Meyer says she's never seen an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hmm. The vampire-with-a-soul bit must be universal. You can catch a clip of Meyer being interviewed here.

There's already talk about turning the movie into a series, should it be successful, and the casting is certainly aimed at fans of fantasy franchises. Set to co-star is Robert Pattinson, of Cedric Diggory fame. But the script is already causing consternation among purist fans of the series over at the MTV.com movie blog. (I have sympathy. Don't get me started on Harry Potter adaptations.) In one scene created for the movie, Stewart says,

“He throws me over his back, right before he's going to tell me that he's a vampire, and then he runs over the treetops. And we're going to be in real treetops; we're not just going to CGI it. We actually get to go up there, and that's what I'm stoked on.”

So does that mean anything to you? Does this movie have a shot at success? Any fans of the series around here? Let us know what you think.

    Not Just You

I saw the picture before I read the heading and thought, "Wow, Michelle Ryan looks young."

    Nope.

It's not just you. When i first saw that picture, i thought it was an article about the demise of Bionic Woman.

    Okay -

Sounds to me like the CBS series Moonlight - isn't that a human girl falling for a male vampire.  I've never watched Buffy, but I thought that was also the case with Buffy and Angel.

I think it's been done - that's some pretty big shoe to fill to try and do it again!!

    CourtneyDax's picture

    Not that related.

Even though all of these stories have the whole "Girl meets Vampire Boy" plot, what makes them all different is the real important point.

I've seen all of the Moonlight, Buffy, etc. shows and they all take vampires in a different way. In Buffy, souls are delt with as a part of your body. Vampires loose their soul but can get it back through magic.   In Moonlight and Twilight, vampires aren't delt with as if they had souls. They're just bad people who bite and naturally loose their concience.

All of these stories take the vampire lore in their own way and I personally(being an avid fan of all of these things) don't string any connection to them.

    My daughter got the books

My daughter got the books for Christmas and as fan of the vampire genre I gave them a shot. They are definitley written for teens but I didn't mind them. As a die hard Buffy fan I can say that they are not in the same class as far as intelligence or appeal. Being as the books also involve werewolves I found more similarities to Underworld and the Anita Blake novels than I did Buffy.

I'll watch the movie but it will take a lot more maturity for me to enjoy this as a series.

    I agree Sass Angel..........

I raided my younger cousins books when I was visiting on Vacation, came across this series and read the first two...I agree they're for a younger audience but I too liked them!!  They didn't remind me of Buffy at all, but I did however think of Underworld as you did, mainly because of the Werewolves.  I would hope they would do the books justice, don't get me wrong they are NO Buffy but they're still good books for a younger audience and if done right could make a good movie that I would see!!!

I couldnt be a bigger fan

I couldnt be a bigger fan of Buffy.  Huge. For years.

When my friend got me twilight two years ago for christmas I was like "ehhh, I dont like vampire stories" because nothing will ever beat buffy.  When I finally sat down to read it.... well lets skip ahead to the part where I have all three books, all signed by stephenie meyer and I have never once thought that Buffy and Twilight are similar.  Stephenie Meyer has created a completely different world with different rules and ideas.  I dont know why people seem to always try and compare. Buffy wasnt the first vampire story and probably wasnt the first story about a good vampire.

This vampires dont have "souls" in fact.. the main character doesnt believe he has a soul at all....  The "good" vampires in this series are BAD.... they just decide to be good.  They dont dust, and they dont die in sunlight (in fact, they shimmer!) and the whole I suck your blood you suck mine thing doesnt happen.. its venom in the bite. Anyway, couldnt be more different from Joss Whedons Buffy. (I do think that Stephenie Meyer is lying when she says she has never seen an episode because her sister is a huge fan...but she certainly didnt rip off any storylines... in fact... the story came from a dream she had)

I LOVE Kristen Stewart and she was who I had in mind when I read the book. I think that the movie should be really good despite some of the changes.

For anyone that is interested in the vampire mythology or the books they should visit twilightlexicon.com. (MTV really just accidentally stumbled upon the popularity of the book...... they dont really know anything about it) ;)

     *steps off soapbox*
    whoops. hehe  :)

The scary thing is.. I'm a completely non-obsessive fan compared to most of them!

    Why does this piss me

off so much.  It's one thing that it seemed like Moonlight was biting from Buffy, but for this movie  to bring that whole vampire with a soul storyline again, irks me.  As you've probably guessed i'm a die hard, or as I like to say crazy estatic Buffy fanantic, and one of the biggest appeals to the show besides the obvious good writing and willow was that it was centered around this doomed Romeo and Juliet romance that help make the show what it was.  To say that one has never watched the show is fine but you can not tell me that a person hasn't heard of it in passing especially when writing on a subject, vampires, that requires some kind of research.  Type in "vampire" anywhere and I most definetly sure you'll come across the Great Almighty Joss.  Pay some Respect! Nough Said!

    The vampires actually dont

The vampires actually dont have (or not have) souls. They are bad just  like any other vampire but deciding to be good. So its not a total rip off

    vampire lore

katie's right, the vampire lore created by the author of these books isn't even remotely similar to the vampire lore in the whedon world. these vampires, for example, are nearly impossible to kill and aren't harmed by sunlight or crosses.

so, i guess both have storylines where not all the vampires kill humans and the classic human/vampire love thing (but many other stories have used that, for example, blood ties), but that's about where the similarities end.

    Jesus_Lover1991's picture

    actually

yes it is true that if you type vampire in on any search engine you will prolly get buffy but..... she didnt do reaserch really it all came to her in a dream. and she just typed it out and them put it all together. not just that she could have typed in vampire and saw buffy but realized it was a tv show and not looked at anything. so you cant really say that she is deff. ripping off because she may not be. Also the whole story of a vampire with a soul or wanted a soul has been around long before buffy its just not very well known. Now I too am a die hard buffy fan. But before i watched buffy I did know about the vampire with a soul. And then i was into buffy. So yea. ^_^

it's not a buffy rip off...

I'm a buffy and angel fan and an anne rice fan, and the "Twilight" books are doing their own thing really. The idea of taking a nonhuman character and humanizing them to a large degree, including making them regret their more nonhuman qualities, is nothing new. Buffy didn't invent that approach, neither did Anne Rice.

I don't find the twilight series derivative in any blantant way, but all these story lines revolve around the "pinocchio" idea of a character wanting to be a "real boy" or else another character wanting to be nonhuman. And all those desires revolve around the fact that two beings from different worlds fell for eachother.

If anything, I think Twilight resembles "Roswell" MUCH more than Buffy. And the movie is going to be great-Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are perfectly cast!

they are just so nicely written and well... i just like them.

a movie about the books could be fascinating, but i don't think pattison is the right choice. as for kristen, i go for it ;-)

Twilight movie? not yay. NOT YAY

My friend is obsessed with this series and made me read all three. I HATED them.

For those who have no idea, the storyline is about as stereotypically heterosexual as you can get. The relationship between Bella and Edward (the vampire) is completely unbalanced. He has all the power to make decisions, keeps secrets from her and is ridiculously overprotective.

Somehow, the majority of males that Bella makes friends with fall in love with her. The only reason I kept reading was some vain hope that Alice (Edward's foster sister) would turn out to be gay. So far no luck.

Comparing this to Buffy is an insult to Joss Whedon.

    well

i respect your opinion but not everyone has to be gay. I mean dont get me wrong i have no problem with people being gay or anything like that but to hate a book because they not is wrong in its own right. And as for Edward he only did those things because he loved her and when he saw that it was hurting her he told her he would never do it again and he let her go with jacob even though he know jacob was going to tell her he loved her. Edward put up with all of jacobs crap because he loved Bella so much and he yes was be over pertective sometimes but he apolagized and they both moved on. and they love each other more than ever now.

    I'm on the fence.

I adore Buffy more than I can say (I'm actually doing a complete series marathon at the moment -- I just hit season four!), and I enjoy the Twilight series. Still, it's like comparing apples and oranges; Buffy manages to make commentary on social issues and people in general in a very witty manner, whereas the Twilight books are simply well-written vampire/werewolf stories with some original ideas. I guess the Twilight series is sort of like Buffy during the high school years...but still, not really.

Anyway, I'm going to wait to pass judgment on the movie Twilight and all casting associated until I see it. I'm more interested in the adaptation of New Moon anyway, considering that's my favorite story in the series. However, I will say that I chortled when I heard about Robert Pattinson's casting (I've been deep in Harry Potter fandom for years, so that's why), and Kristen Stewart doesn't really do anything for me at this point. They might surprise me, though.

re: perceived gender roles in twilight with the lead couple

I don't think the relationship between the human Bella and vampire Edward can be applied to real world circumstances. It's not gender based when Edward does things that are a sorta wacked in the relationship-its based on more on his gf's humanity and thus vulnerability to the supernatural forces around her.

He goes overboard in his protective issues at first, but he learns that he can't act like that or else he will ruin his relationship. Also, the vampire Edward is also dealing with issues of differing sensibilities-he's from 1917-his need to learn how to get out of that timeframe is part of the process of him and bella negotiating their love.

I think attempting to psychologize these characters in real world ways is sorta missing the point-cause their world iis inhabited by vampires and werewolves, unlike ours.
