Casting the Queen of SoulIn a recent interview, Aretha Franklin spoke about casting dilemmas for the TV movie version of her autobiography, From These Roots.
Billy Dee Williams and Terrence Howard have committed to play her father and Smokey Robinson, but the role still up for grabs is Aretha herself. Depending on who you listen to, that is. Jennifer Hudson is rumored to be already cast, but Franklin says nothing is set yet. If it were up to her, she'd have several women play herself at different ages. (Hey, that sounds familiar. But I would really have something to say if they cast Cate Blanchett for this one.) Here's Franklin's short list:
I know, I know. Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia Barrino and Halle Berry? Which one of these is not like the other? But let's start with Hudson.
She's a logical choice. She's proven her ability to play a complicated, sympathetic character on screen, and her powerful, flexible voice could handle any vocal gymnastics required. She's already auditioned for Franklin, and the producers are pushing for her. Why wouldn't they, on the heels of Dreamgirls success and an Oscar? But there's always the possibility Hudson might lose out (again) to Fantasia.
I generally don't watch American Idol — I can't stomach public humiliation — but the one season I did catch was the third. And I have a confession to make. From the moment I heard her sing "Summertime," I was cheering for Barrino to win. Her distinctive voice has such personality that if you told me she was the reincarnation of a '30s era diva who stomped at the Savoy, I would believe it. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xnr92_fantasia-barrino-summertimelive_m... ">Fantasia Barrino - Summertime(live) Plus, she's got an in. She's already recorded a duet with the Queen herself, "Let Me Put You Up On Game," for Franklin's forthcoming duets album, Jewels in the Crown. And she seems to be holding her own in the Broadway version of The Color Purple. Assuming she can act (and I haven't seen her try), she could carry the role. However, singing ability is apparently not required. Halle Berry herself initiated contact about the project.
This may be the place to drop one more tidbit of information. The woman who plays Franklin doesn't necessarily need to sing:
Eh. As much as I admire Berry, and as much as I R-E-S-P-E-C-T Aretha Franklin's creative instincts (you knew that was coming), this prospect doesn't do it for me. Berry has played a singer, Zola Taylor of the Platters in Why Do Fools Fall in Love. (There was also that weird CD rumor last year.) And maybe she can rock the karaoke machine, who knows? I still stand by my judgment: It would be too bizarre to hear Franklin's voice while watching Berry. Just call me a literalist. In a role like this, I'd rather see a singer play a singer. And then sing. The delight of the entire project for me would be in hearing vocalists pay tribute to Franklin through her classics. The question remains, then. Who is worthy to carry Aretha Franklin's crown, if only for a made-for-TV movie? An obvious (well, to me) option for Franklin's 30's is Queen Latifah.
She's royalty already, we know she can act and sing, and since she's actually pushing 40, she could cover that stage of Franklin's life as well. I know, this is probably wishful thinking on my part, but do I even need to say how much more convincing she'd be than Halle Berry? Another no-brainer: Jennifer Holliday.
The original Effie has stage experience and the pipes, and at 46, she's perfectly suited to portray Franklin's adult years. Here's another (slightly random) reason to support her: She supports us. That's her onstage at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center's 33rd Anniversary and Auction. That's my own short wish list. Who else could we cast as the Queen of Soul? Part of me wants to see
Part of me wants to see Jennifer Hudson take this role (I think she's fabulous)...but the other part of me laments that it'll be one more impediment for audiences who want to hear her debut album, which I desperately want to hear.
I love Fantasia (as a fellow North Carolinian, I cheered her from the beginning of that season of AI) but I'm not sure I'd endorse her for a pure acting role, unless she's improved dramatically since she starred in her Lifetime biopic.
Too bad Lauryn Hill's gone batsh*t crazy.
Fantasia would definitely be the best choice!
But, must we turn everything into some sort of competition? Aretha Franklin makes a one sentence comment and it then gets turned into a debate over who would be b
Well, personally I think Fantasia would not only be the best choice but the best for the movie. However, sometimes the best doesn't always get it, sometimes the second best gets it because of politics.
Fantasia has gone to broadway in a tough lead role where she is required to ACT, sing, dance on stage over 2 hours straight 8 times a week.
She's knocked out the Box Office for TCP breaking the broadway theatre house record and TCP 8 week performance record the first week she performed (this is after TCP had ran on broadway for over a year and a half). Her presence made even more people race to see it then ever before.
She has gotten rave reviews, her reviews have been far better then the person who won the tony for the same role. They say that she has made the entire musical musical run better and make more sense. I have no doubt that had fantasia been the original Celie, it would not have only been nominated for "best musical" but it would have won. Fantasia has already had a tv biopic and it got HUGE viewership (19 million), so if they want viewers they'd go with Fantasia, if they want the best of the best in terms of performance, they will go with Fantasia.
If they want a person who's just going to go in a do a job good enough to get accolades for themselves, then they will go with someone else and have lower ratings .
BTW, Fantasia is the best performer of these people of Aretha songs. Check her out on Tribute to Aretha, no one other then Aretha herself can cover an Aretha song better.
BTW, their duet is straight FIRE. Their voices while they sound different (they should they are individuals) they have the exact same singing style. Jennifer is a belting woman and can't really do the type of singing that Aretha does with such ease.
I had to laugh when someone said they wouldn't endorse fantasia on acting. Are you kidding? She's survived on broadway to 100% RAVE reviews, if you survive there to rave reviews in a difficult leading role, doing a movie would be so easy in comparison. Some of us really need to read up on things before we speak. LOL
With that said. The best choice would be Fantasia for all the reasons noted above. But that doesn't mean she'll get it. so there is still hope for Jennifer (being second best).
To Clarify
I think you missed my point: there's a difference between a practiced singer being successful in a musical and a practiced singer being success in a movie.
Evidence #1: Fantasia in "The Color Purple" versus Fantasia in "Life is not a Fairy Tale" (here's the review of the biopic from Hollywood Reporter)
Evidence #2: Beyonce in "Dreamgirls" versus Beyonce in everything else she's been in
Honestly, I'm not even sure that Jennifer Hudson can pull it off, but I think her casting in "Winged Creatures" and the new "Sex in the City" movie suggests that she might have some real acting chops.
Fantasia has recieved rave
The Queen
I so agree with having Queen Latifah play Aretha, she has a great singing voice and she can act which is a plus.
I also think Jennifer Hudson would be a great choice too, she does have a good singing range and its similar to Aretha (but nobody could be greater then Aretha)
Marrion: Now, tell me what do you see?
Kel: Two lovers in a passionate embrace
Kath:...Two dead sticks
much as I love fantasia
Let's Not
What I think
If Aretha wants different people to portray her in different stages of her life, all three above could still play her. I think having someone portray her in her different stages of her career is a good choice because Aretha wasn't always the size she is now. Give or take a few pounds in her earlier years, Halle could play her in the beginning. BUT would Halle be convincing playing a 14yr old? It may be a challenge. Personally I think an unknown should be chosen with big hollywood names in supporting roles.
Everyone is saying well get Jennifer Hudson. She has fans and all, but not that much. I mean how much of her fanbase contributed to movie ticket sales? Dreamgirls to be as hyped as it was, wasn't the blockbuster it was hyped up to be. They made their money back with the release of the DVD. Also lets face it....Jennifer won that oscar for her singing and not her acting. I also don't think her name will draw people to the box office either. But alas we shall see just how good her "acting" is when winged creatures and now sex in the city comes out.
Fantasia on the other hand has proven that she can be a box office draw. Her lifetime movie LINAF garnered 19 million viewers over the weekend it premiered. That was more than Dreamgirls opening weekend might I add. Also for someone who filmed a tv movie in two weeks and with no acting coach to work with her in dept and taking cues from debbie allen while directing the movie, I say she did a fairly decent job as a first time actress. Let not forget her starring role in broadway's the color purple to which sinc Fantasia first made the announcment that she was joining the show, she sold $10 million in advanced ticket sales and the weekly sales up until now has been consistently between 700k-1 million. Broadway is extremely difficult than doing a movie. You can't yell out CUT and let me do it again, you have to just keep it moving. The show must go on, on broadway whether you mess up or not. Lastly Aretha has always endorsed Fantasia since American Idol. Aretha even referred to Fantasia as her child. Fantasia also played a young Aretha on the short lived NBC tv show American Dreams. Lets not forget that tribute that was given in Aretha's honor and Fantasia sang her heart out on baby I love you sounding like an exact replica of Aretha. Their musical style is very similar and if Tasia was chosen as the lead, I'll be happy for her and if not, then my second choice would be Queen Latifah. Whomever plays the part will be lipsynching to Aretha's music anyways and at the same time have to look convincing and we already know how great Fantasia connects to whatever she sings.
Here is a side by side comparison of baby I love you with Aretha and Fantasia.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf45k2rZd2A you can also search youtube for Tasia's tribute performance of this song as well. The similarities are uncanny if I must say.
They Need An Unknown
I think that if Fantasia or Jennifer gets the part of the young Aretha (20s-30s), they should do their own singing...and both are capable. If a straight actress who can't sing gets the part, then Aretha's voice MUST be used.
As I said before, I'm banking on an unknown girl that can sing and act her butt off. I also think that Aretha should reveal more in the movie than she did in the book. We learned nothing we didn't know in FROM THESE ROOTS. Franklin is so secretive.
Agreed
oooh I dunno
My gurl Tasia!
Absolutely No on Latifah!
In the first place, she's too old to play Aretha Franklin. The movie will probably consentrate on Aretha's heyday as a superstar, with brief parts covering her teen years. If you go back and look at pictures of Aretha when she was 18, she was very attractive, slim and very lady-like. Latifah's too "butch" to play The Queen. On stage was something different, Aretha turned into a stone, shouting gospel-influence diva.
I've always contended that there's an unknown out there that could play Aretha. Jennifer Hudson would have to lose some weight, Fantasia Barrino just doesn't look the part, though she certainly could sing it. Halle Berry has the acting chops and could sync Franklin's voice, but not "Dana Owens."
Aretha has announced so many projects that never reached fruition, I won't hold my breath for this one.

I'm late to the game, but...
"apollo's blog: But there's always the possibility Hudson might lose out (again) to Fantasia. " .
Jennifer lost out to Fantasia on American Idol, but then, Fantasia lost out to Jennifer in 'Dreamgirls'! Fantaisa' people were pushing for her also. So you could have left the "again" part out of it, especially since she want a few different people to play her. I really didn't care for Fantasia's 'Summertime' - but I Loved her version of 'You Were Always On My Mind' - brilliant! (I guess that's different strokes for different folks) :)
Aretha loves her some Fantasia (just like Patti LaBelle loves her some Jennifer)...and that may be the reason Fantasia get the part.
Jennifer, Fantasia, Halle and Queen Latifa - they are so very different. There is no rhyme or reason for Aretha selections, especially for Halle. I personally believe that Aretha would really like to play herself and wished she looked like Halle. :)
