Beyoncé plays Etta James

Filming commenced this month, the first images are out, and here's the proof; Beyoncé really is playing Etta James in the upcoming Cadillac Records. This film is not a biopic of James (though that's not a bad idea), but a chronicle of the fortunes of Chicago record label Chess Records and its musicians. The cast includes Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess and Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters.

So here's a look at Beyoncé and the original.

And here's the first image off the set.

Even though this is not a biopic, the casting, you can imagine, is a topic for fairly ugly debate (even NPR had a blogger roundtable partially devoted to it). I do wonder about the wisdom of the role as a career move, at least for the negative press it's generating, including the inevitable references to the supposed Beyoncé/Jennifer Hudson rivalry following Hudson's Oscar win for Dreamgirls. And much (annoying) speculation about whether Beyoncé will be gaining weight or wearing prosthetics to look more like James. Can I take this moment to say that the young Etta James was no Twiggy, but she was certainly not fat?

She was, however, a complex person who, shall we say, tried a lot of things in her life. Or, as PageSix reports, she said of herself: “"Oh my god, she [Beyoncé] is going to have a hill to climb, because Etta James ain't been no angel!" Beyoncé doesn't quite fit that mold, Etta explained:

"I wasn't as bourgie as she is, she's bourgeois. She knows how to be a lady, she's like a model. I wasn't like that ... I smoked in the bathroom in school, I was kinda arrogant, so those are some of the things I would want to tell her."

No word (that I could find) about how/if the movie will treat James' addiction to heroin. Or if the movie will touch on her rumored affairs with women. But the possibility of such scenes is what really has people questioning the casting. Well, that and the idea that Beyonce might perform that little number “At Last.” Here's a nifty version with a slide show of vintage pictures of James across a few decades:

I'm withholding judgment on the casting for the moment. While I can think of singers who remind me more of James, and I personally wish the role had gone to one of the many talented African-American actresses (not singers) in Hollywood who never have enough roles anyway, I didn't think Beyoncé sucked in Dreamgirls. (I may be in the minority on that.) And if it's true that James may have a little hand in coaching Beyoncé on the vocals, well. The chance to work with Etta herself? You can't blame her for wanting the role.

Was there no one else available?

Sorry to sound harsh, but I don't see why Beyonce was chosen to play Etta James. Maybe I'm a bit biased because I,personally, don't like Beyonce's voice or acting ability. Also, Beyonce is NOTHING like Etta James (not even in looks). (Do I smell a marketing ploy by using her?)

I guess I'll just wait for the movie to come out to put my foot in my mouth. Btw, thanks for the clip of At last.

    slide show?

I can't seem to find a play button for the slide show. All I see is a black square that does nothing when I click on it. Would love to see the picutres of Etta. And no offense to Beyoncé, she's quite likeable, but she really hasn't evidenced the vocal power required to pull off an impersonation of Etta James. Hope it won't be an "All I Could Do Was Cry," kind of performance.

"Baby, What You Want Me To Do"...

I agree. Beyonce, really? Muahahaha. Thank God it's not a biopic. I mean, really. That's about like Denzel Washington playing James Brown. I think I'd cry.

...and all was well, and the world smiled.

    "I'd Rather Go Blind"

But be careful, the Den-zealots will find you! :) Great song choice. Loooove her version and Elvis', too. Oh, yeah, she'll never be able to touch her.

    annoyed

why the fuck has beyonce been playing some of the juciest roles available to black actresses in the past few years? she's not a good actress and i don't think she can portray a vegetable, let alone etta james. hopefully if they ever do a biopic, they'll find someone who can do etta justice.

    I know that's right

Yes Beyonce. And please stay the hell away from all Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Donna Summers, Tammy Terrell, Minnie Ripperton scripts in the future.  Leave well enough alone and enjoy your time being remembered as Deena!  Shooo

I just can't see it. Etta

I just can't see it. Etta James is a deeply layered, complex woman and Beyonce is all surface, with more surface underneath. Which, unfortunately, shows in her 'acting'.

    Jeffery Wright as Muddy Waters!

Am I the only one who thinks that alone could save the movie?   I don't hate Beyonce, but don't love her either, so I'm relatively ambivalent about her casting.  But Jeffery Wright as Muddy Waters?  I'm so there.

    I won't hold my breath

I kind like beyonce but her acting is NOT her calling.she's a pop star and verrry good at what she does so she should stick to her day job.

they should have found someone who can play a musician as well as jamie fox played raycharles

and other actors who have successfully played musicians in the past.

i'll check it out tho to see if i'm wrong about her.......

but i won't hold my breath

    Sanitized Etta.

The minute I read the headline...the concern it raised is a cleaned up verson of Etta's life to suit the acting ability and/or persona of Beyonce.

I enjoy Beyonce and Destiny's Child music...but this sounds like stunt casting to me.

    Poor Bey...

She want's to be a 'movie star' so badly.  But playing Etta 'Miss Peaches' James is not for her.  I think Jennifer Hudson would be more suited for the part then she would be.

Maybe she should think of a Diana Ross movie, that would be best suited to her voice.

I also thought Beyonce did a very good job in 'Dreamgirls'.
