Best geeky movies everThe perpetual list-makers over at listverse.com have posted a new list I found appealing to my geekish tendencies: the Top 20 Geek Movies of All Time. I was relieved to see that these were movies for geeks, among whom I count myself, and not about so-called geeks, which is a totally different beast. (And the appeal of which I just don't get. I was in a house this weekend where Superbad was playing, and I still feel like the inside of my head needs scrubbed.) The criteria for the list are a little hard to gauge, but there are a few things in common: space, or computers, or other sci-fi themes, or a combination of the above. Also, the 1980s spawned most of the geeky classics. One of my favorites made it: Short Circuit. Ah, Ally Sheedy circa 1986. My girlfriend says you look like somebody's mother here, but I say what's wrong with that? (Also, she was crushing on Sally Field in Places in the Heart, so I say her judgment may be questionable.)
A more recent film that made it was The Matrix. Again, I agree. The sequels were unwatchable, but I'll never forget seeing the fight sequences at the theater; this was a movie that changed the way movies are filmed. (Er, does saying that make me a geek?) Oh, and there was Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss).
Another good call: Serenity. I sort of think anything written by Joss Whedon qualifies for geekdom on that basis alone, and this one also has Jewel Staite, Summer Glau, Morena Baccarin, and Gina Torres fighting the good fight on the big screen. Enough said.
But the No. 1 film I just can't stomach: 2001: A Space Odyssey. I can't be the only geek who can't sit through that movie. And they've missed a few of my faves, so I'm opening the floor for nominations here. First, I'll put forward The Fifth Element. I don't think I've ever really figured out what's going on, but it's pretty, and it belongs on the list. Here's a geeky touch: a storyboard of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) .
And another nomination, because surely any film belongs that inspires people to dress, cross-dress and otherwise burst into spontaneous song in public venues: The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Yay for Geekdom!
Use the Forks Luke....
It's gotta be Star Wars ALL the way for me... it WAS my youth!
What's not to love?!
Princess Leia and that bagel hairstyle/gold bikini, Luke Skywalker and the Force, Han Solo and his Wookiee, C3PO and R2.....
I even bought Family Guy: Blue Harvest the other day (which was something of a disappointment - LESS focus on matching the film scene-for-scene, MORE interest in writing a FUNNY script next time please Seth!) not to mention I believed I could move things with the Force until I was 10 *cough* more like 31! *cough*. Plus there's all the versions I own on DVD/VHS, plus the novels, plus the merchandising......
Oh the merchandising!
Need I go on? ;-)
Star Wars made me the lesbian I am today!
or maybe it was Charlie's Angels/Cagney & Lacey....hmmm.....
The Sci-Fi Bard (proud owner of new Lego Luke Skywalker T Shirt)
A list that doesn't include Sneakers . . .
Is a list created by people who are just wannabe geeks! Not actual geeks.
Anyway, here's my two picks: Sneakers, and Real Genius.
Take that Lord of the Rings!
Sneakers!
Inconceiveable!
Foolish foolish me
Forgot to add:
Enemy Mine
Princess Bride
Krull
and, of course, the list wouldn't be complete without
Xanadu.
(However, true geeks only live for Star Wars and/or Star Trek. Anything else is just the Diet Pepsi of geekdom....)
love and kisses
The Sci-Fi Bard (about to watch ep 1 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles - YUM!)
p.s. 2001: A Space Odyssey is genius and anyone who thinks otherwise is "losing their mind..."
yep
Xanadu! haha, best movie
The original
Star Wars Triology, Star Trek II - IV, Tron and Explorers ... absolutely loved them as a kid and still a nice trip down memory lane.
And I second Rocky Horror, Princess Bride, Short Circuit and The Matrix.
speaking of Ally Sheedy
How about Wargames?
Ally Sheedy and a TRS-80. *sigh* Those were the days!
Yay Rocky!
Terminator movies
Tank Girl
Definitely a chick-geek movie.
Metropolis is incredible--if you haven't seen it, watch it!...the whole thing. :)
Tank Girl
Best. Movie. Ever.
Metropolis was really great too. I'd also add The Princess Bride and Children of the Corn.
Oh, and Hackers. Angelina with short hair and...wait, what else happened in that movie?
Contact
extra terrestrials, futuristic technology, and hey, it's even got Jodie Foster. i knew i liked that movie for a reason.
Rocky Horror
Rocky horror is one of my all time favorites, short circuit wa samazing too one from when i was a kid is batterys not included :D
If Things Get Too Real, Promise To Take Me Somewhere Else
Heh
Heh, I was just taking a break on my LotR marathon (I know, I know.. Break on a marathon, I'm weak.)
Right, geeky movies. Won't repeat anything that's been mentioned, here are a few others on my list:
Tomb Raider - Based on a computer game, Angelina Jolie being a badass, riddles = lots of geeky goodness.
Minority Report - Just because of those invisible mid-air multi-touchpad like keyboards/displays.
And then there's stuff like Memento which isn't really a geeky movie as such, but it requires an at least somewhat damaged person to understand and/or enjoy the head-spinning, mind-boggling development of the movie. And geeks usually fall well within the "damaged" category.
- Fox
Lord of the Rings
Is the uber geeky-est movie ever! I love it! Hee.
Ally Sheedy
WarGames
Tron!
I haven't seen it in years, but I remember it blowing my wee baby mind. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, this scene probably says enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3ODe9mqoDE
I assume the videogame came after and I remember trying (and failing miserably) to play it. Very hard game! Very cool, crazy movie.
Oops, I see it was sort of included on the list. Sort of. And I think it's supposed to be TRON. Sheesh.
Do I get kicked out of geekdom if I say that I only recently saw Bladerunner and was wildly bored and creeped out? Maybe a lot of it was because I can't stand to watch Sean Young...
Of course, Star Wars and LotR are at the top of the list. I'd also maybe include Indiana Jones in there although that's not sooo geeky.
Um, and yes, Trinity in The Matrix. Wow.
I love TRON. It's my all
I love TRON. It's my all time favorite movie. I wore my VHS copy out, bought a DVD copy, then bought the 20th Anniversary DVD as soon as it hit the shelves. I even own the soundtrack (geek factor = high).
The original arcade game came out the same year as the movie (1982), and can still be found in a few old school arcades or in the various Disney arcades at the theme parks. There was a sequel game in '83 that was called Discs of Tron, and then the Tron 2.0 that came out in '04, which was the FPS set in the Tron universe.
It should totally be included as more than just a "bonus," though. The awesomess that is TRON know no bounds.
2001
You're not the only one. I fall asleep within 5 mintues of watching it. Every. Single. Time. I tried at least 5 times, it never failed.
I also have that problem with another perennial favourite of such lists: Brazil. I can't even say I don't like it, it just has the same magical effect of putting me straight to sleep.
I'm an Alien girl myself. Maybe this explains that...
Galaxy Quest must qualify both as a movie for and about geeks.
Ok... I confess, I also watch Red Sonia eveytime it's on. I know. I'm weak. And Ladyhawke. And Willow (no, not that one, the other one, the movie). And of course Excalibur.
Pity criteria are space and sci-fi... Anything with Ray Harryhausen's name attached to it would qualify too (if we admit LOTR, we must remember Jason and The Argonauts).
I also own a dvd of Vegas In Space.
I loooove the rocky horror
I loooove the rocky horror picture show. the cast who i loved to see every 1st saturday of the month just had their last showing cuz the theater decided not to have the showings anymore....booooo!!!

Ghost in the Shell. It was
Ghost in the Shell. It was cool like The Matrix before there was technology to make a live action movie that cool.
I agree that the Matrix sequels sucked pretty badly, but I thought The Animatrix was awesome, especially The Second Renaissance.
I think Terminator or T2 should be on there, too, and I think TRON should actually get a number not just be a bonus.
Personally, I like 2001, but I can get why people don't.
this was a movie that
this was a movie that changed the way movies are filmed. (Er, does saying that make me a geek?)
No way! It's true, damnitt.
I don't think Reloaded was so bad, by the way. The fight scenes are so well-choreographed and... well, COOL! I'm not a fan of action movies or anything like that, but when The Matrix or Reloaded is on telly I can't tear my eyes away.
Is Rocky Horror really a "geek" film? (I guess I'm a geek then.) Even though it's a B-movie, it's an important film for a lot of people, especially for queer kids coming out. I mean, when you're queer and in high school, there are only so many places you can go at midnight to enjoy drag, debauchery and the company of other queers.

rocky horror
Not all of my friends
Not all of my friends turned out queer, but we were definitely geeks. We used to hang out in the computer room after school. LOL! *smacks forehead*

Monty Python!
I can't believe that Monty Python and the search for the holy grail is not on either list. That is a Geek Staple, you have to at least be able to quote one line from from that movie to qualify for geek where i'm at.
But as for top geek movies- i'll name 3 that I believe should have been on the list
Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail
Princess Bride
Army of Darkness
oh yeah
LoL You have to be able to
LoL You have to be able to quote at least one line from Monty Python to be COOL where I'm at.
"Nothing makes one so vain as being told one is a sinner."
~ Oscar Wilde
I'm glad someone understands
Army of Darkness!
Oh lord, yes. I'm trying to
I forgot about about sex ed with John Cleese
Now, did I or did I not... do... vaginal... juices?!
Oh, the Latin grammar bit was always a favourite of mine because I studied Latin in high school. That scene more or less summed up how our classes went; our teacher was a complete bastard! LoL
The part when the centurian threatens to cut Brian's throat when he guesses "dative" is especially funny. It's sort of an inside joke: Usually whenever Latin students don't know in what case a word should be, they guess dative! It's one of those universal dumb-Latin-student mistakes.
"Nothing makes one so vain as being told one is a sinner."
~ Oscar Wilde
Oh! And, also...
Did you realise that the woman who plays John Cleese's wife in that sex ed scene was Patricia Quinn, aka Magenta from Rocky Horror? Clash of the geeky fandoms!

Johnny 5 is Alive!
Loved Short Circuit and the sequel too.
How about 'Batteries Not Included" a real sweet movie.
Close Encounters
Coccoon
Do they qualify as Geeky?
Was Carrie Ann Moss channeling her inner Keanu? Reminds me of Matrix.
Trinity turned me gay
Seriously. If I have a root, she's it.
Gaaaaaaaaaah!
VARIOUS GEEKS
Cocaine Cowboys
Geekity Geeks
I am "drawn" to the comic/graphic novel/video game movies:
Batman, Spider Man, Superman, Sin City, 300, Resident Evil, Fifth Element, Tank Girl, Tomb Raider, V for Vendetta and Punisher (to name a few).
Of course the Bourne series, The Matrix, LOTR, the original Star Wars triology, and Terminator/Terminator 2 are some of the best movies.
I know there are more that I am forgetting....movies that I am sure I own. Oh well, it's not like I'm getting graded or am I?
"It's mercy, compassion, and forgiveness I lack; not rationality." Kill Bill Vol 1
aww damn
now i'm gonna have to go and watch the matrix again bc it's in my head! it's taking over! arrrgh. i was soooo obsessed with that movie when it came out like crazy!
and the rocky horror picture show....classic! one of my all time faves ;)
~*~Alice: Thank god you're here we're totally outnumbered. Bette: What do you mean? Alice: Straight people. Bette: Oh, Jesus.~*~
What about Alex Rogan and Centauri?
Geeky?
Hmmm, I've seen 15 of these....the ones I am missing are Akira, Pi, Office Space, Metropolis, and Brazil. I've seen parts of Metropolis and Brazil though.
I only own 6 on DVD... Hackers (AJ, of course I own it), Star Wars (I have em' all, not just the IV, V, and V1), The Matrix (I own the other two as well, but this gets more viewing), Serenity (I own the original DVD release and the more recent 2 disc edition....Love me some Joss Whedon), Lord of the Rings (Yep, but just the 2 disc versions, didn't pony up for the massive editions), and Spaceballs (I actually prefer Qalaxy Quest as a sci-fi parody)
I need to pick up Blade Runner, Alien Quadrilogy, Planet of the Apes (Charleton Heston of course!), Repo Man, Wargames, The Star Trek films, and Short Circuit for my collection though.
Some others in my collection that might make an AE list of geeky movies...Evil Dead I and II along with Army of Darkness, Back to the Future, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yes the movie....good campy fun), D.E.B.S. (for us lesbian geek grrls), Excalibur (80's fantasy geekness), The Fifth Element, Frank Miller's Sin City, Galaxy Quest, Ghostbusters, Highlander, Tomb Raider movies (AJ of course), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (I hung with folks who knew every line, myself included), Princess Bride, Red Dawn (the movie even geeks don't admit to liking it, but watch it every time its on), Resident Evil movies, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Showgirls (Geeky only for us grrls who want the Gena Gershon lesbian trilogy on DVD), Shrek movies (just for the parodys of other movies), Sneakers, Stargate, Terminator movies, Spinal Tap (yes, I was a geeky metal chick back in the day...), and UHF (geeky, but you have to be a Weird Al fan)
Of course there should be a seperate list for geeky tv shows like these from my collection....The 4400, Alias, Angel, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, Charmed, Cleopatra 2525, Dark Angel, Dead Like Me, Eureka, Farscape, La Femme Nikita, Firefly, Heroes, Hex, Highlander, Lost, Numbers, Roswell, Space 1999, Veronica Mars, and Xena....sheesh, thats over 80 seperate tv boxes in my collection....just on the geeky stuff.
Guess that makes me a DVD geek too. No wonder I am always wanting more space....:)
LEXX - The Dark Zone
should be mentioned in that row of geeky and bizarre space movies/shows ...

In Defense of The Matrix Sequels
Come on now. Let's be reasonable you rabble-rouser you. Yes, they suffered from some gaps in logic and some cheesy dialogue. (I don't have an excuse for why the resistance didn't build body armor into the battlesuits at the end). But...the ideaology behind the series, the grade-A action sequences, the latex jumpsuits, and the presence of both Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett put them leagues ahead of most franchises.
Perhaps when cruelly compared to the watershed moment that was the original Matrix, the sequels shine less brightly, but I enjoyed a mini marathon recently of all thre films and learned to appreciate the trilogy as a whole. I suggest everyone on this list do the same! This thread is to celebrate all that is good about geekdom after all. What better way to nerd up your Saturday?
Burly Brawl forever!!!!
Hey the Matrix sequels
Hey the Matrix sequels weren't too bad. Two words: Jada Pinkett. And still Carrie Moss.
I looooved Repo Man. Aliens, yep, yep. Bladerunner, oh, THAT is the geek movie par exellence! Just as well Tron was there as a bonus. I can't believe they included Hackers! Such tripe. I totally love me some Serenity. That's a fantastic pic of all the women in this post!
But where is Terminator II? (And Linda Hamilton's biceps?) I totally second the Tank Girl suggestion. And then there's Strange Days. Angela Bassett is ripped and kicking arse! I also second The Fifth Element and the Rocky Horror (although when I first saw it, there was no such things as computers at school, so I think I was the only aficionado to turn out to be a techie. The others were "just" queer.)
Oh, and yes to The Princess Bride. It's not just geeks who love it, but I think anyone with geek pretentions has to.
Hackers...
I have to disagree on the hackers front. I absolutely love the movie - dated compu-torment and all.. This one gets my vote!
My Fav..
Little movie that came out in 1997 called Cube. It's a mix of Sci-Fi, Horror and math. Geek extreme.
Pessimism is just another word for pattern recognition.
what about Harry Potter?
what about Harry Potter? i'm a huge HP fan. the books, the movies, the merch...all of it.
