"So You Think You Can Dance": season overviewIt’s taken me this long to recoup from last week’s finale. I’m still out of breath from screaming. (Actually, I missed last week because I was at a women’s music festival, romping in the woods with a few thousand half naked women. I know, you feel sorry for me.) What a season, eh? From sexy Cat Deeley to great guests (Jordin Sparks) to lousy guests (take the Pussycat Dolls, please) and last but certainly not least, some out-of-this-world dancing. Someone fan me and pass the ice cream while I go over a few highlights. We started with auditions in six cities from the bad (Gold Inferno, anyone?) to the amazing (popper Robert Muraine, who bowed out of the finals). After a while, they morphed into one giant dancer but somehow, 20 finalists emerged from the wreckage, 10 girls (or “gulls” if you’re Cat) and 10 boys. They paired up and in the weeks afterward, danced everything from a waltz to hip-hop to jazz. Two new genres were introduced — Bollywood and a country two-step. The latter was weak, but the Bollywood dances, with their colorful costumes and fun moves, were a hit. I hope there’s more of that next season.
Regular judges Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe were always there with a rotating group of guests including my TV girlfriend Mia Micheals and the Dumos. I could’ve done without Toni Basil’s pontifications about dance but I think she was only on once. While Murphy’s million decibel screams were sometimes annoying, I got used to her, like living on a busy street and not hearing the honking. Besides, we need someone to get worked up, it certainly wasn’t Nigel.
There were some great guest dancers like the L.A. Ballet Company (who did a gorgeous pas de deux) and the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe. The choreographies were freakin’ amazing and even more amazing, the dancers learned so many genres in so little time. Usually it was successful although a few of the hip-hop dancers had trouble with the more formal ballroom dances. And speaking of ballroom dance, it was great that Chelsie lasted as long as she did. Ballroom dancers usually don’t have the versatility of the other dancers although my man Benji (season two winner) did a pretty damn good job. Then there was the weird bunny choreography. Yeah, I know it was oh-so-Cirque-du-Soleil but please, people, demonic bunnies? There were the expected eliminations, like Rayven, early in the finals but what about the Comfort debacle? I was ready to love her street smart self but it was clear she wasn’t on a par with the others. Still, she toughed it out, even staying longer than Chelsea. Then when Jessica was injured and she came back for two more weeks? Whoa.
The opening choreographies were cool. One of my favorites was the one where Nigel was tied up. There are too many wonderful couple dances to count but Chelsea and Mark’s about the workaholic guy put together by the Dumos is definitely a stand out. So was the sexy samba done by Katee and Joshua in the same episode. Both couples danced well together, as did Kherington and Twitch. And can you believe that Kherington was asked to go before Comfort?
Ooh! Don’t forget about that fiery pasa double by Kherington and Twitch, with the cape twirls and fierce expressions. I’m still dreaming about Kherington. She can play dress up with me anytime. The solos weren’t as memorable because they were so short and because most would’ve benefited from a good choreographer. However, I do remember Will’s great James Brown routine although a fat lot of good it did him since he was eliminated soon after. What a shock that was! It happened not long after we started voting and I’ll bet the public was tired of the tongue bath he got from the judges every week. After 60 million votes for the finale, Joshua was declared the winner. Good for him. It was rewarding to see a street dancer win and wasn’t it sweet that Twitch clearly supported him? No sour faces or bad losers here.
What were your highlights? Surprised at the winner? What are you anticipating for next season? I’m hoping for more soccer players (Kherington), less comments about masculinity (Can you hear me, Nigel?) and expanding the genres of dance (more Bollywood please). Eh
I wasn't into this season at all. The past two were so spectacular, this one really lacked. I didn't get into it. So, hopefully next year will be more exciting. Until then... I'm happy Joshua won. He deserved it.
Kherington *swoon*
I crushed on Kherington from her first audition. She had something special about her and I hope that's not the last we see from her.
Watching the Olympics this week, I find myself thinking the broadcasts could be improved by the addition of Mary Murphy doing commentary and Cat Deeley doing some of the sidebar pieces (like the strange foods bit the other night). Can't you just imagine Mary Murphy blowing out Bob Costas' eardrums? ;)

Hey, Jamie...
great
This season was the only season i've watched and i gotta admit that it was great, i loved it. I'm really glad that Joshua won, congrats 2 him. TJ
Yay, someone masculine won!
I totally agree about solos. Why don't they have choreographed solos? And why are solos so short? I know the dancers can learn only so much in a week, but they could cut down on the group numbers, or something.
My pros and cons for the season:
Pros:
1. The dancers. Those kids are so talented and cute and worked so hard. I enjoyed them all.
2. Mark. He was probably my favorite personality-wise this season. He really owned his "quirkiness" and didn't pretend that he liked being in an all-girls dance school.
3. That tall girl who looked like Uma Thurman. I forget her name, but I'll never forget how gorgeous she is and what a great dancer she is. If they had a decent choreographer for tall girls, and the judges hadn't been biased against her, I think she could have gone a lot further.
4. The new choreographer Sonya (sp?). I think the reasons are obvious.
5. The finale. I have very little that is positive to say about the judges, but I really enjoyed them in the finale. I liked that Mary Murphy danced and Nigel danced and did choreography. The judges on the panel seemed very relaxed and were clearly having a great time. It was fun to watch. Mia Michaels looked totally hot. And Debbie Allen was hilarious with her impression of Lil' C. Also in the finale I enjoyed seeing a lot of old faces from SYTYCDs past. Missed Sabra, though.
6. Cat Deely.
Cons:
1. The judges: Self-aggrandizing, obnoxious, they have random criteria and pimp their favorites too much. Half of them seem like they are on drugs, or else they are just incoherent naturally. A few who really rubbed me the wrong way: Mary Murphy is the most annoying person on the planet, but at least she's not mean like Mia. I hate how that Adam guy uses the show to promote himself and other big wigs in the audience, though at least he really gays up the place when he is there. I can't think of anything redeeming to say about that woman who said "street" every other word while she was judging.
2. Homophobia. It seemed to die out a little toward the end of the season, though. I think Nigel must have been getting a lot of complaints about his obsession with masculinity. I wonder if he got the irony of his "Five Guys Named Moe" piece.
3. The judges kissing up to Will and the mean treatment of Jessica. The judges couldn't stop talking about Will, even after he was gone. Also, the way Will only half-heartedly stuck up for his partner. The treatment of Jessica sucked.
4. The girl-girl dance. Katee and Courtney were totally ripped off. How are they supposed to be competitive when they're given a frou-frou little routine that's just a lot of prancing around? Grrr. This one dance was symptomatic of the way the girls are treated on this show in general.
5. Though I enjoyed most of them, no particular dances really stood out for me this season. I guess my favorite was the Mark/Courtney cabaret dance. The "door" dance was quite memorable, but mostly because it was a neat gimmick and well-acted, not so much because I was wowed by the dancing.
I agree
I agree with everything you said. I was especially dissapointed with the girl-girl dance in the finale. Tyce Dioria (sp?) is usually a really good choreographer. After that dance I knew both girls would be out first.
I also didn't like the judges this year. Mia has always been tough, but this year she was just plain mean sometimes. I've never liked Adam, but I just fast forwarded through his comments and name dropping.
I think this year started off slow just like all of the other years, but the final episode was really good. I liked that they gave us updates on some of the past contestents. I also really enjoyed the recaps, and hope Jaime does them for the next season.
I'd love to write recaps
I'd love to write recaps again next year. Thanks, darlin'. :)
The best season yet!
This was definetely the best season ive ever seen! though the beginning was a bit off hand it gained so much emotion as it went. I loved the contestants, there was sooooo much good talent it was just amazing to see it all. The coregraphies and the diversity of dancee genres was amazing as well, the bollywood was my first love, I do hope they put it up in next season as well, also , those traditional dances freom other countries, it was all very contructive. There was no rivalry at all in this season was very peaceful, Ihope this is an example for the seasons to come.
And yesssss I loved Joshua since the beginning, he was good at everything, he had it coming and very well deserved!! :D
Apples and Oranges
I love dance in general and this show in particular. There were so many memorable numbers. Most of the dancers grew as each week progressed.
While I was pleased to see Joshua win, it could easily have been anyone of four dancers for me. Because the dancers shine in different ways, picking a winner is a lot like choosing between apples and oranges. I thought Courtney (not sure of the spelling) was the most improved. She partnered so well with the others. Joshua, Katee and Will were brilliant dancers. Twitch was also great depending on the choreography. I thought Joshua and Katee were the most versatile. Throught the few seasons that I've been watching I think Mia Michaels provides the most dramatic and beautiful choreography.
I do wish Nigel would get over his homophobia against the more feminine male dancers.
One thing I have noticed on a variety of dance shows is that judges tend to be brutal in their critiques of most dancers when they're saying something negative. It seems to go with the territory. Their emotions seem rather extreme. If they like you they love you, if there's one thing they don't like it comes across as borderline hatred. Well the arts in general are high energy and high emotions.
I can't wait for the next season.
much respect although aside
Mia Michaels...
Her in that white suit on part two of the finale made me utter the words...
"Damn, I can't wait for ten years from now when my crushes on 40-something women won't be so weird."
Mama Mia
Season 4...
This season was somewhat entertaining overall. There were some really great dance routines and dancers. But for me, I had enjoyed the other seasons more such as season 2 with Benji and Donyelle (my favorite couple on SYTYCD so far), with Courtney and Gev being second.
I wanted to see what happened to Sabre, the winner of Season 3. I did enjoy seeing the other dancers from the previous seasons, it was very entertaining. Also I really enjoyed Mary Murphy dancing, she looked great! She has a nice body for dancing especially her legs. One choreography I did not like by a great choreographer was Mia Michaels' last four contestants dancing together. I did not understand it even though there were some great movements in the routine.
Does anyone remember the teenager from this season's auditions who lied about his age the previous season's auditions? Stated he was 18 when he was 15 years old at the time. I felt he was a gorgeous dancer (meaning his movements were fantastic, he knew how to move), I really hope he auditions again and makes it on the show.
It's not "just" the judges who are homophobic
Jason Coleman, the lead judge on the Australian version of the show also made comments to Rhys (an out male dancer) about being more "blokey" and to Demi (an out b-girl) about how hot she looked in heels and a dress.
The dancing field is very rigid and standardized. These judges have a lot of work to do to overcome the traditionality of the sex roles portrayed.
I found the two same-sex partnerings bothersome on this year's finale. The girls fluffy piece compared to the men's Russian dance-battling/posturing. Bleah.
In all fairness, last year featured Lacey and Sabra being a mother and daughter pair of foxes (literally), and Danny and Neil battling it out. I won't be surprised when next year we get more of the same familiar sex roles. Personally I'd love to see Jason Gilkerson choreograph the two women in the top 4 doing a smoldering Argentine tango. That would make my YEAR.
same-sex dances
I'm with you on the girl-girl tango! Barring something that awesome, though, at least give them something with a little athleticism and real dancing and emotion in it. I have not been a big fan of any of the girl-girl dances on the show, but at least the foxes one had an emotion behind it other than being "girly." 99.9% of the dances on this show are about heterosexual love/sexuality, so I'm always happy to see a dance that shows any other aspect of the human experience.
I rolled my eyes so hard when they said Twitch and Joshua would be battling each other. Again!!?? Talk about unoriginal. And the girls would have looked so much better doing that Russian routine anyway. Let the girls battle. However, Twitch and Joshua were two of the only guys in the competition who wouldn't look good prancing around with parasols.
Tangos
Yes...love that idea. Maybe we should start a write-in campaign for female-to-female tangos. They have been done on Broadway.
I agree about the female pairing this season. The women are capable of much more challenging and dramatic choreography. Being feminine does not have to mean being weak.
Chelsea
From the beggining I really thought Chelsea was going to win
