"So You Think You Can Dance" mini-cap: look both ways

It’s week four of the finals and seeing what host Cat Deeley is wearing is almost as exciting as the dancing. This week she’s sporting a retro looking mini. Her hair is swept to the side like a '40s starlet. Sexy. In fact, that seems to be the theme for the night. Plenty of bare chested guys tonight and sexy long legged beauties (and I don’t mean Thayne) glide across my small screen.

Tonight joining the regular judges are hip-hop choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo.

Every couple is dancing twice, each time in a different style. It’s great to see how versatile everyone can be.

First up are Jessica and Will, doing a jive, a fast dance with a lot of leg shaking and goofy facial expressions. They do a death-defying lift where Jessica goes over the top of Will and through his legs — whoa! The Dumos and Lythgoe like most of what they saw but ballroom expert Murphy commented that Jessica placed her weight in “all the wrong places” while Will had it in “all the right places.” The negative comments about Jessica didn’t end there. Stop already. Will’s a great dancer but it seems that every week one or more judges will go on about him but chastise Jessica. She’s a beautiful dancer. You know what they said about Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire? Sure he was good but she did everything backwards and in heels. (Stick that in your ballet shoe and … oh never mind.)

Because their old partners were eliminated last week, Comfort and Thayne are now a couple. As they do their West Side Story-influenced Broadway routine, I think that it’s not a bad pairing, but I don’t believe Comfort is up to par. Even when she’s in her genre, hip-hop, she doesn’t deliver it like she should. I love her personality — she’s funny and lively — but this isn’t So You Think You Have a Personality. The Dumos liked their work and Murphy echoed that but Lythgoe blasted them saying that the piece was about pent up aggression and he didn’t see the intensity it required. I’ve gotta say I agree with him.

Kourtni and Matt do a soft-edged hip-hop presentation that doesn’t quite cut it. I blame the choreography. Lythgoe called it “hip-hop on sleeping pills.” Oh my god, I’m agreeing with him again. I’d better stock up on my meds.

Next are Chelsie and Mark, who do a Mandy Moore jazz choreography. The music repeats a line about kissing so there’s a lot of puckering up and damn if it isn’t cute. The judges like their chemistry. Murphy deadpans, “I hate to be a downer,” then screeches, “I just loved it!” I run for the ear plugs. My cats run for the ear plugs.

Kherington and Twitch do a fiery pasa double dressed as matadors with lots of cape swirling and fierce expressions. Lord have mercy, hose me off after that one. Kherington can snap a cape at me anytime. The judges comment on the slow build that Twitch does and wish that he’d brought it sooner. They have nothing but praise for Kherington with Napolean saying that she had that same look in her face that flamenco dancers have – the one that says “I could kick your butt.” Uh huh. Call me, Kherington, and we’ll play dress up.

Next my TV girlfriend Mia Michaels choreographs a contemporary piece for Katee and Joshua. I don’t know why Katee is wearing a huge bun on the top of her head — it’s distracting — but the dancing was freakin’ amazing, just bursting with angst and emotion. Hey, it’s Michaels, it’s what she does. When Deeley asked Joshua about the dance, he mumbled something about how there was so much more to dance with Mia. (The woman renders me speechless too, honey, I know what you mean.) Lythgoe says that they are one of the top couples to beat. I agree with Lythgoe again and head for my meds.

Here comes the segment of the show that I’ve rewound so many times I have it memorized. Courtney and Gev pop and lock through a hip hop routine dressed in matching over sized jerseys and caps. Not only does Courtney dance the crap out of this routine but, dare I say it? With that cute swagger and those clothes she’s looking butch in a yummy Shane kinda way, ya know? The judges love Courtney but don’t love Gev, with Murphy saying he didn’t hit it hard enough.

After the break, the couples return for their second dance. Jessica and Will slide through a lyrical jazz piece that is so sexy I need to be fanned. (Send Courtney over and make sure she’s wearing that baseball cap, ‘k?) Using a shirt as a prop, they tug and tumble over it and each other. Will’s not wearing a shirt but none of the straight female audience members mind. (And I’ll bet every gay boy watching has covered himself in honey and is purring “come get me, big boy.”) Tabitha compliments the couple on their nice lines. Napoleon has to criticize Jessica with “you’re holding Will down.” Oh stop, already. Murphy disagrees, screeching about something in 10,000 decibels. I think they’re back on the hot tamale train but my ear plugs filter out her voice range. I can see her mouth opening and closing in a big O.

Comfort and Thayne do a smooth waltz. Comfort looks a bit uncertain. The judges aren’t sure about this with comments ranging from “really enjoyed” to “felt a bit phony.”

Kourtni and Matt deliver a sexy mambo with some complicated lifts. The reaction from the judges is mixed with Napoleon telling Matt he needed to get “down and grindy” to Murphy who said she “didn’t believe the chemistry.” Lythgoe wanted Matt to be “butcher.” Let the boy be his swishy self. Geez.

A suave foxtrot is presented by Chelsie and Mark. She’s a ballroom dancer so she’s in her element. It’s harder for Mark but he pulls it off. Murphy and Lythgoe have a little spat about how good they are. Lythgoe gets the last word by telling Murphy to lower it three decibels. (Hey! Has he been reading my blog?)

Twitch and Kherington dance a choreography by Micheals that centers around a bed and rose petals. It matches the song by John Mayer and hot damn, it’s good. The judges go on about it, as well they should, with Tabitha saying “awesome” about 47.5 times. She’s talking about the dancing but I’m sure she doesn’t mind looking at a shirtless Twitch. Lythgoe says that years ago he could jump on a bed like that. Too much information, dude.

Second season winner cutie-pie Benji Schwimmer choreographs a West Coast swing number for Katee and Joshua. They dance it well although the weird blues song is distracting and it’s a little too much Benji, using some of his signature moves. I love the guy but making Katee and Joshua do two-person cartwheels just doesn’t work. The ending is awesome, though, with Katee catapulting Joshua across the stage with a hip thrust. It’s amazing how much ground he flies over. The judges love the performance with Murphy yelling “whoo hoo!”

Courtney and Gev have never been in the bottom three and here they prove why, with a fast Broadway routine. It’s cute and has a lot of “wow-gosh-golly” kinds of acting but that’s what the piece calls for. For the most part the judges liked it, complimenting their characters but Lythgoe wanted Courtney’s round kicks to be stronger.

At the very end of the show they always show all of the dancers on stage doing their thing while the credits roll. I like to watch this part because their true personalities emerge and I’m especially glad I’m still watching ‘cause I catch Kherington and Chelsie leading each other around the floor. Hot damn, two women! It’s clear they like each other and they’re so adorable.

So what do you think? I’ll bet Comfort and Thayne are headed home next. Will is definitely safe, given the tongue bath he always gets. They’d better keep Kherington or I’ll have to start drinking.

Tonight, one guy and one girl goes home. One Republic is performing. Murphy will be screaming. I’ll be wearing industrial strength ear plugs.

Courtney and Gev..

Courtney and Gev are my favorite pairing. Courtney was GREAT in the hip hop routine, I was disappointed in Gev, though. Gev does hip hop so he should have been fantastic but he was not. Courtney is so cute!! I wasn't pay close attention to their second performance to comment.

Joshua is a decent dancer, so is Will.

HallyB's picture

I Love Courtney and Gev!

I'm so there with you on Courtney and Gev. I think they're so cute together! I think Gev was fine on the hip hop, but I think people remember his sick breaking skills from the auditions and were expecting fireworks. The routine didn't really call for his particular skills, plus Courtney was totally into it and hitting harder, and she was so unexpected. I thought he was fine, though. Did you see Gev's breaking solo on the results show? Ridiculous. I wonder if Courtney and Gev are a couple in real life. They would be so perfect! My favorite couple on the show, though, is still Joshua and Katee, despite the awful Benji routine they did. Yikes, that one didn't work at all.

Kourtni and Matt

I think these two are headed home. They have been in the bottom every single week and they're headed there again this week. I think america is telling the judges to get rid of them and they cant ignore it another week. Kourtni usually has amazing solos but I don't think thats gonna help this week... they've been down there wayyyy too long now, but as long as Chelcie's there, I'm good.

Oh Mary

So I'm not the only one who thinks Mary should shut up. Ever notice her terrible metaphors too? Sorry I'm a little geeky haha but she's said some pretty horrendous ones. I think last night said said "The passion is my fever" or something weird like that.

Poor Jessica! They just keep picking on her and she's equally as good as Will I find. I STILL don't see anything special about him at all. I was so glad when Mary actually complimented Jessica though.

My top 4 easily is Katee, Joshua, Twitch and Kherington! Maybe Mark and Chelsie as an honourable mention. I'm so in love with Twitchington though. Kherington was HOT in their first dance. She is DEF. a pretty face, no doubt about it. I wouldn't mind dancing with her every week : )

All the Mia routines were

All the Mia routines were great this week. The dance Jessica and Will did with the shirt was amazing.

I wouldn't mind dancing with Kherington every week, too. And a few others as well. :P

Lord Help Me

Ohmyohmyohmy! I fainted last night watching Kherington dressed as a toredora.  Heaven help me but that woman was soooo sexy.  I watched that scene again this morning before I was off to work.  Big mistake.  She's all I thought about today.

I enjoyed Mia's routines, thought they were well danced.  The hiphop routines still bore me.  I do like a lyrical hiphop--I just need something I can hang an emotional hat on, so to speak and hiphop just does nothing for me.

I also think Katee & Joshua,  Twitchington, and Mark & Chelsie are the ones to beat.

And I love how we're seeing more of Cat's personality.  She's starting to open up and get personal with the dancers, just with little one liners, and it's cute.  She's cute.

Mia Michaels

I love reading your recaps because I feel the same about Mia. She is amazing and has this weird draw. I cant explain it to my girlfriend who thinks Im crazy but I just love her. I would bow at her feet if she would let me....lol.

Great Recap!

Love this show

Okay, first off, I have to say for the 1000th time ... I love this show.

Let's see -- Chelsie and Mark have emerged as my favorite couple thus far.  They dance so well together and they just click.

Both of Mia Michaels' routines were incredibly choreographed and performed.  Wow.

Agreed -- Kherington was hot in both performances as was Courtney in the hip hop routine.  Wow, did she nail it!!!  Jessica just can't catch a break.  Everyone is so enamored with Will that they're totally overlooking her and it's a shame.  Once they start switching partners, I think she'll do well.

I love Comfort's personality as well, but if she, Thayne, Kourtni or Matt go home, I won't be upset.

I noticed Chelsie dancing with Cat Deeley last week and this week with Kherington first then Cat again.  I like.  =P

St. Louis Sucks....

for many, many reasons, but last night the network that carries that show blanked out on cable last night. They couldn't get their crap together until there was only 30 minutes left and at that point I couldn't watch. TsC

katee and joshua rocks!

as we'll probably get this season next year where i'm from, i've been relying on youtube just to be able to catch up on one of my favorite shows.

i agree that twitch and kherington(where'd that name come from?!) are one of the strongest couples on the show but the contemporary piece that mia michaels did for katee and joshua confirmed for me, that they are the ones to beat. OMG! i really felt that piece to the core. it's not just about the dancing, it's the way they performed and, as tabitha pointed out, the way they commanded the stage and captured the audience's attention. amazing!

also loved courtney in the hip-hop routine. she had the attitude, man!

"it's a space thing"

sydneyB's picture

I. Cannot. Believe. Comfort. is. still...

in the freaking competition. Seriously?!?!? She is just no where near as good as Courtni L. Matt I expected to go but Courtni? Arrggghhhh!!! She better go home next week...

And Courtney and Gev's solos were crazy sick. When Gev came out of his flip I was just like holy shite!

HallyB's picture

Could Gev be better than Hok?

I agree with you about Comfort. I thought she was better this week, but her solos are lame and Kourtni was more deserving of staying this week. If Jessica goes before Comfort, I'm calling the cops.

I totally loved Gev's solo. I was kind of glad he was in the bottom 3 just so I could see him do his thing. He's sick! He reminds me of Hok, how he seems to defy gravity. I actually think he might be better than Hok, which is saying a lot.

BTW, did you see the popper (anyone know his name?) from the auditions doing his thing on the results show? Other than Blake's final solo from season one, and Danny's final solo from last season, that was the finest solo performance I've ever seen on the show.

bernie.'s picture

I'm surprised Thayne is

I'm surprised Thayne is still there haha. His smile still creeps me out. But I was not surprised to see Kourtni and Matt go, even though I loved them. I'm not surprised if the judges had already made up their minds before the solos who was going since they have both been in the bottom 3 like every week.

I think Comfort should've gone too. Her solos suck! She's just doing a bunch of waves and I didn't see what was so special but I guess the judges liked her this week.

God I love this show....and Kherington hehe <3

I Was Pleased With the Results

I thought it was the right choice to have Matt and Kourtni go.  I'm no fan of Comfort's, but M&K just have done nothing for me at all.

I was dead shocked with Cat pulling a fast one at the outset.  You could see the look of horror and relief that Twitch had on his face.  She was laughing so hard.  Haha. She's such a QT!

I'm so eager for next week's show already.  I'm sooooo the junkie!

SYTYCD

I absolutley love this show. I've been watching it since its second season and I think this season is the best. There are so many memorable dances already. My favorite style of dance is contemporary and I thought Twitch and Kherington's routine by Mia Michaels was so beautiful. They are definately my favorite couple. I think Kherington and Chelsie are the best dancers; they dance with passion.

I can't wait until later in the season when there will be girl/girl pairs dancing.

These are my favorite dance routines:

LOVED

chelsie and kherington at the end of the show! i agree that they're both the best dancers but i can't pick a favorite
HappyMedium's picture

I know!

That was so hot. I hope they get paired together later in the season if they make it that far. I'm wishing upon a star that this season the girl/girl pairings will get better routines than the previous seasons. The choreographers are telling beautiful, romantic stories in the routines they are creating for the boy/girl couples and I just wish we can see that when it comes time to switch up the couples and have the girls dancing together.

Who am I kidding... we will never see that. :(

SiLLySyd's picture

Genius!

I do like that idea.  I don't want to see any of that mother and daughter fox ballony that Wade Robson choreographed last year for Sabra and Lacey.  I didn't get it and neither did the judges.  Girl to Girl romance makes good TV anyway, Fox should know that!
HallyB's picture

Worst routine ever...

I love Wade Robson's stuff (like Ramalama Bang Bang from season 2), but that fox thing was one fo the worst routines I've ever seen anywhere. Yeah, I don't think we'll ever see a girl/girl dance number of a romantice nature. This show is the most hetero-centric show I've ever seen. They even use code words, like macho or masculine, meaning straight. Feminine, for, yep, straight. I don't think Comfort is gay, but they don't seem to like her butch style of dress very much. Whatever. I oddly don't mind the male/female dynamic they stick to. It usually works from a dancing aspect, I think, with their different strengths complementing each other. I actually would not like to see a girl/girl or guy/guy waltz, for example. It just doesn't seem like it would work. Maybe I've been socialized!
danes38's picture

waltz

i'm with you on how it may seem weird for a waltz routine but I for one would love to see a girl/girl mia michaels routine. preferrably with kherrington and chelsey ofcourse :)

SUPER SYTYCD FREAK

I can't dance, yet I can't get enough of this show!

So far this season I like Joshua and Katee, and Mark and Chelsie (more so Mark for his qwerkiness).  I'm rooting for the 12 feet of dancing (Kourtni & Matt) just because they're so tall, but I don't think they're gonna make it very far =\

Also, I think anyone who gets Mia Michaels for choreographer is lucky because it will most likely secure them from bottom 3 couples.

I can't wait for the tour already!!!!

PS....someone needs to take the host our of her heels.  She's makes everyone besides the twin towers look so small. Awkward...

SiLLySyd's picture

Doh!

I totally forgot to get the recap for Thursday's results.  So much for being a SYTYCD super freak lol.  So disregard my comments about the 12 feet of dancing. Sadness!

Further Proof of the Conspiracy

OK, I know I mentioned this before, but I have to say it again. I can't stand Tabitha and Napoleon. I hate her more than him, but I'd love to lose the pair and have them hire Supple, a choreographer from London who worked SYTYCD Australia and did amazing routines.

That said, this week just confirms in my own mind that the producers of the show have some evil, closed-door agreement with Debbie Allen to do all they can to make Will look good. They've decided to tear down Jessica, who is in my opinion, one of the loveliest dancers on the show, to help Will. Jessica has grace to spare and seems willing to do amazing moves, like the flip jump, through his legs thing she did this week. Plus, she covers Will's mistakes, and he makes tons of them. I never really react to a TV show with an outward display of emotion, but I caught myself yelling at the TV when Napolean said Jessica is holding Will down. I may have cussed a little. It's such garbage. Will is good, but is far from the best male dancer on the show. I think Joshua, Mark, Gev, Thane and Twitch are all better. Will seems too unsure when he's not doing contemporary. I'm getting mad now just thinking about it. Damn Debbie Allen...

Back Off Jamie...

Mia is my girlfriend so you just need to back off! LOL

Ugh she is so amazing I have the biggest crush on her...If I saw her just walking down the street I would not be attracted to her...But her choreography and talent just makes her sooooo HOT!

Will and Jessica

Best performance for me this week was the lyrical jazz routine that Will and Jessica danced to.  I was never interested in them until that performance.  I loved the way they used the shirt as part of their routine.  When Will kicked the shirt from underneath Jessica, talk about timing.  This performance showed me what excellent dancers those two are and that that deserve to continue on in the show.  I do love Joshua and Katie.  And also Chelsea and Mark of course, their perfomances have been flawless.
