"So You Think You Can Dance" mini-cap: the final 10 try to keep America's attention

Hold on to your chocolate bars ladies, it’s time for us to decide who goes and who stays. Last night was the first time that our voting decides, not the judges. It’s also the first time we’ll see everyone do a solo. And if that wasn’t enough, the couples are parting ways and getting new partners. No more Twitchington? (Let me pause now for a dramatic hand to my forehead.) It’ll be interesting to see how this goes. I’ve stocked up on premium dark chocolate so I’m ready.

First, the big news: Jessica is introduced. Solemnly she tells us that she’s got a couple of broken ribs so no dancing for her for four weeks. (She doesn’t say how it happened although some speculate it’s because Will dropped her.) Jessica can tour, though, so that’s good. The bad? We’ve got another week of Comfort, who’s taking her place. Now, I’d love to hang with Comfort ‘cause I think she’s fun but this isn’t So You Think You Can Hang Out with Jamie.

Lil’ C is the guest judge. I’m not always sure what he’s saying (he talks in circles) but he’s entertaining and I like the krump choreography he did for Kherington and Twitch last week.

Courtney and Joshua do a cool hip-hop number by Dave Scott where Courtney plays a kind of monster with Joshua as her Dr. Frankenstein. I love the characters and they dance it very well. Lil’ C thought Joshua killed it and Courtney was good. Murphy screamed something that made my cats run from the room. Lythgoe commented that he’d never seen Dr. Frankenstein spank his monster. (Well Nigel, obviously you’re going to the wrong parties.) He went on to say that Courtney wasn’t as good as Joshua. Well duh, she’s a contemporary dancer so she’s not going to hit as hard as Joshua.

Chelsie does a solo next. It’s always tough for the ballroom dancers to solo but she pulled it off, even dropping to the floor once.

Kherington and Mark glide through a country two-step choreographed by Ronnie DeBenedetta and a very pregnant Brandi Tobias. (It was lovely to see Brandi move. I’ll bet the baby was doing the backstroke in there.) It was a little too pretty and smooth even if Mark looked tres cute in his jeans and hat. Lil’ C didn’t love it, Murphy used her pouty sad face and Lythgoe commented that Kherington was really leading, not Mark. (And there’s a problem with that?)

Next, Gev does a great solo hip-hop routine.

Comfort and Twitch are paired for a smooth waltz that could’ve been smoother. Comfort is fabulous for someone who’s only been dancing for a few years, but she’s not top ten material. It was noted by all the judges that they didn’t have that floating illusion that’s so important in this dance form. Lythgoe said they looked choppy and I agree.

After Courtney does her solo contemporary presentation Cat Deeley playfully yells, “Come here, gorgeous!” and gives her a big hug. (Me next!)

Tice Diorio put together a Broadway routine for Katee and Will that’s pretty damn good and that’s saying a lot, considering how much I don’t love this genre. It’s animated, the characters are cute and the dancing is technically great. I love how they use the boat as a prop. They look adorable too, with Will in a bow tie and Katee dressed like Maryann from Gilligan’s Island. I could’ve done without Will ripping his shirt open at the end but hey, it’s Will and that’s what he does. The judges go on about the greatness of their pairing and for once, don’t pan Will’s partner.

Mark does a solo to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” with great acting and wonderful technique.

Chelsie and Gev dance a contemporary piece about a couple with a great yearning for each other. The choreography doesn’t excite me, frankly, but maybe I’m just missing Mia. The judges loved it with Murphy saying that they had amazing chemistry.

Comfort does a solo piece that’s not as technically proficient as the other dancers.

After a break, Twitch shows Comfort how it’s done. He’s got a giant “T” on his shirt and all he needs is Lois Lane and a cape and we’re good. I love how his personality comes through. I’ve gotta say that he’s coming out as one of my favorites. (Please don’t take my lesbian card.)

Ooh! Next is a rumba and I do love that dance style ‘cause it’s sexy and fiery and it makes me miss my girlfriend. (OK so that last part isn’t so good but you get the drift. I need more chocolate.) Courtney and Joshua tear it up. Lythgoe has to say that Joshua knows how to use his hips but also how to butch it up. Um, yeah.

Katee does her solo. Damn she’s cute. She could power a small city with that smile.

Kherington and Mark are back with a jazz routine. I missed seeing a story. The judges don’t love it either with Murphy saying that without a story, Mark is lost.

Next is a pas de deux with Katee and Will. (For those of you thinking “Huh?” it’s a type of ballet. In French it means “step of two.” Impressed I know that?) I won’t pretend to know anything about the genre but I can say that was pretty. In fact, Murphy said it was a “beautiful song, beautiful choreography and with two of the most beautiful dancers.” David Archuletta mangling “Imagine” is not my idea of a "beautiful song," but I have to agree on the other two points. (Archuletta almost won American Idol this year. I didn’t vote for him but then, I’m not a 13-year-old girl. Oh don’t get me started.)

Before Lythgoe commented on the pas de deux he said a few words about choreographer Desmond Richardson and his partner Dwight and how honored he was that they were on the show. First, I love that two men showed Katee and Will a dance but second, I wonder what kind of partners, you know? They looked like sweet swishy boys to me.

Joshua does a hard hitting hip-hop solo that I want to watch several times. He’s right up there with Twitch for me.

Chelsie and Gev finish off the evening with an explosive jive that’s joyful and fun. Lil’ C thought Chelsie outdid Gev but I think it was a close call.

Tonight’s show features three group routines, one of them choreographed by Mia Michaels. There’s also a mystery guest. Two dancers will be sent home. For the girls, it’s easy but for the guys? Yikes. It’ll be interesting to see if the public loves Will as much as the judges do. What do you think?

Gev, Katee and the DAC

I know I go on and on about Will and the obvious DAC conspiracy, but he did do a good job in his first routine. I noticed, however, that the judges almost totally ignored his routine-killing mistake in the pas de deux. He shoved Katee right into his shoulder and totally broke character after that. It felt more like a contemporary routine, but the choreography was fine. I do think Richardson is gay. I thought I read that somewhere. I'm so heartbroken about Jessica.

Gev is fast becoming my favorite guy on the show. I still love Joshua, and I think he's better overall, but Gev seems to be superior to Joshua in hip hop and possibly contemporary. Joshua is actually a great ballroom dancer. I'd love to see him do a samba with Chelsie. Gev's contemporary last night was one of his best routines on the show and his solo was the best of last night IMO.

Katee is my favorite now for the girls (since Jessica is gone). Chelsie might be a little better than Katee, but there's something about her personality that puts me off a little bit. I always thought she hated Mark a little bit, and then of course suspected that it's because Mark is gay. Chelsie is from the ballroom world, where most of the guys are straight, so maybe she was looking for a guy who would be into her. She really didn't seem to love Gev either, though, so who knows. Maybe she's just uppity.

Will's gaffe

Nigel did comment on Will's mistake, but he attributed it to both of them.  He said something to the effect that without the mistake, the routine would have been perfect, and now they have something to strive for (a routine without errors).  Or something like that.

I do think Chelsie is on the uppity side!  I had wondered if it was just being partnered with Mark, who I was also convinced that she didn't like, but after last night, I think she's just snobby or sumfin. ;)

I think it's great that both Josh and Gev are quite good in other genres.  Twitch and Kherington showed off that outside of their genres, they're probably not as good as the other dancers.  She's still a QT Pie!

My question about Jessica and Comfort is this: Do both dancers dance in the Top 10 tour?  Because even though Jessica is out on a medical, Comfort's in there performing.  And if she earns her spot by surviving the Voting Audience, doesn't she deserve a slot on the tour?

Alternate?

They might make Comfort an alternate. If she happens to make it any further (if she doesn't get voted off tonight) it would kinda suck being in top 10 on the show but not being able to tour.

2-step

As a cowgirl I know a little something about 2-step, and last night's version of it was really bad. The parts of the routine that for me would have been the hardest/impossible, such as lifts, were the only parts they really got right, as far as I could tell. I was so excited that they were adding 2-step to the repertoire. I hope the poor performance doesn't mean it has made its first and last appearance on the show. More country dancing!

Didn't Desmond Richardson say something about how the pas de deux is not about a man and woman but just about love--something like that? I was doing laundry and only half paying attention, but my ears perked up because it sounded vaguely non-heteronormative, which is sort of rare for the show, and I looked up and saw two guys dancing together. Then talk of their being "partners"... My homometer was definitely buzzing.

futuristic hip hop

i think you forgot about twitch and comfort's second routine, which was far superior to their first.

Still love my Kherington

Still love my Kherington but Chelsie is growing on me too...or maybe her legs? lol I was kind of disappointed with the dances last night, most of them weren't very good but maybe I should cut them some slack since they're all new partners. I also thought Will ripping his shirt open was really unnecessary...but Mary didn't apparently! I still don't see him as a 'genius' dancer either...

Is it just me, or is the show becoming more and more sexual...I mean especially the comments Nigel makes sometimes? It's really funny but he's starting to sound like a dirty old man lol It's like when he made the comment last week about Chelsie wearing her outfit in the kitchen...I got a laugh out of that.

Anyways, I think Mark and Comfort are gonna go tonight but who knows...anything can happen. Eek!

lol

Oh bernie, didn't you know that Nigel has been sounding liking a dirty old man for going on four seasons now? ;)

Eek

Eek, I have a feeling Kherington only stayed so long because people were voting for Twitch...
Penny Winterr's picture

I got it all wrong

I was convinced it was going to be Mark and Comfort that were elliminated.  Gev and Kherington.  Wow.  Didn't see that coming at all.
damemoderne's picture

NOOOOO

I live in Seattle and I haven't seen the show yet! Gah, I knew I should have stayed away from this blog. :(
Caveblonde's picture

Seriously?

I'm completely suprised too. I thought for sure it would Comfort. She seems like a sweet girl, but I dont' think her dancing has been up to par at all. I thought it would be close between Mark and Gev, but I thought Gev had been winning over the crowd lately. Disappointed...

What???

If you haven't watched the results show yet STOP READING.....

I can't believe Comfort got more votes than Kherington. I do agree with you Bernie though that Kherington was probably getting votes because of Twitch. But Comfort really....she's not a good dancer, even in her own genre. I'm still suprised that she made it to the top 20 at all.

Anywho, I loved the Pas De Deux routine by Will and Katee. That was probably my favorite routine (technically).

Melissa Hsu's picture

Nooo..(spoiler included)

Gev is gone. Gev and Courtney were my favorite pairing.  Oh, well.  Courtney, I will still watch the show to see you.

Sweet holy $*@%

Can I just express to you how HOT Courtney was in that first routine she and Joshua did?? I was always more of a Chelsie fan, and I still am, but GOOD GODS, Courtney had me fanning myself...

Honestly sad to see Kherington go. And Comfort needs to go. She needed to go a while back. >:/

whitetank's picture

*fans self* too

Aj Yes oh god Courtney was smokin hot in the rhumba. Yeow. When they did that bend thing where courtney's leg was between joshua's legs (sorry don't know the term!), that was so unbelievably hot, I didn't know what to do with myself.

But my favorite still is KATEE. She's not just a technically good dancer but she's also honest and genuine and just plain adorable. Gosh when she dances, she makes me melt :)

My beloved Kherington! I was so stunned last night. A lot of people said Kherington was 'just a pretty face' but not to be biased but I actually thought she could dance. What a waste.
Jessi's picture

I am also sad to see....

Kherington gone aswell. At lease Chelsie is still their. I think she will win the whole thing. I also like even though I cant think of her name the mix Chinese/American girl (well i think she is half Chinese) And for the guys I think Twitch or Joshua has a chance.

Unclear Winner for Me

Last season it was clear to me that Sabra or Neil would win.  With the Australian show, it had to be Jack or Kate.

But I have no idea who's going to win this one. If I have to go out on a limb now, I'll say Katee.

I'm looking forward to seeing the different pairings.  We'll really see who's good enough in the coming weeks.

ALibraOfHerOwn's picture

I'm really hoping

the winner will be Katee:) She's just a wonderful dancer and she's the best among the girls imo, to be honest the guys are so much more better than girls this season, I'm thinking one of Joshua,Twitch or Will is going to win,as much as I love Will, if one of the guys wins it I'm hoping it will be Joshua or Twitch because they both are so adorable, lol.  And I was not surprised to see Kherington go, yes she was really good the first 2 weeks but she didn't get any better in fact she just got worse in the last 2 weeks, she danced tired and last night it seemed like she didn't even care anymore, I mean her solo was really bad. Although I still think she is a better dancer then Comfort, Comfort just tried harder last night, her hip-hop routine was definitely one of the best. And dancing with Twitch definitely worked for her:) But I'm really really hoping Katee will win the competition, she just lights up the stage and she's great in every dance she does, she didn't mess up even in one dance so far,  yeah there was a minor mistake last night but still, she's so much better than the rest of the girls:)

Comfort on Tour

After the top 10 were chosen it was announced on stage (after the cameras were off) that Thayne and Comfort would be touring also.  I guess that they usually take 12-14 people.
