"So You Think You Can Dance" mini-cap: Comfort gets eliminated, but not for long

The opening hip-hop choreography from last week's elimination episode of SYTYCD was by Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo and it is crazy good, with part of it done under low lights, glow-in-the-dark stripes illuminating the moves. After a big ending, Cat Deeley makes her grand entrance in a stunning little black dress that makes me forget to breathe.

We get right into it with two couples, Comfort and Thayne, and Katee and Joshua, being called to the floor. Well, duh. I tell my cats that it’s Comfort and Thayne who’ll have to “dance for their lives.” (I still giggle at that phrase. It’s not like they’re hooked up to IVs or anything. I’ll bet Mia is already choreographing that dance.) I’m right.

The second two couples called to the stage are Jessica and Will, and Chelsie and Mark. To my utter surprise it’s Jessica and Will. That sexy contemporary piece they did should be in some dance hall of fame but instead, they’ve been voted to the bottom three.

Kherington and Twitch are the final couple to be sent to the bottom three, with Courtney and Gev wiping their brows in relief.

Three dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater perform next. Their dramatic presentation garners a standing ovation from everyone, including the judges. It sure beats the Pussycat Dolls.

All six dancers in the bottom dance for their lives and it’s clear to me that Comfort is going home. Twitch does this ultra groovy mad conductor character that I’d love to see in a longer dance.

While the judges deliberate, Katy Perry performs “I Kissed a Girl.” (Darlin’, so have I and yep, I liked it too.) I would’ve enjoyed the performance more had it not been done to tracks. C’mon, the drums weren’t even miked and even though we could hear a female back-up singer, there were none present. Made me wonder if she was lip syncing too but that’s for another blog, another time.

When Comfort is told she’s going home, she doesn’t seem too upset. She says she’s only been dancing for two years. Wow. My opinion of her has gone up one hundred percent.

Then it’s time for the three guys to be told who’s leaving. Twitch is staying so it’s down to Will and Thayne. We first have to hear about the wonderfulness of Will. Yeah, yeah, and his mentor Debbie Allen is in the audience. I’m weary of all this Will worship. He’s great, sure, but so are the others. Anyway, we know it’s going to be Thayne. He looks sad but holds it together. I want to hug the boy. Deeley does that for me.

But after elimination, Jessica was injured somehow (it remains unexplained by producers) and Comfort will return in her place. Judge/producer Nigel Lythgoe has released a statement:

I would like to say how sorry I am that Jessica cannot continue dancing in the competition at the advice of her doctor. Her full recovery is paramount and will only come with rest. We are fortunate that Comfort has agreed to rejoin the competition and know that under the circumstances she has Jessica's full support.

So Comfort gets a second chance this week. Does she deserve it?

So excited to see the show tomorrow night! My favorite couples are going to be separated so I'll get to see who the REAL dancers are. Interesting that Jessica is quitting though. I wonder if Comfort will get voted off 2 weeks in a row lol

I'm so disappointed in Mia

I'm so disappointed in Mia Michaels. I have always only mildly tolerated her, but last week she was so unnecessarily nasty towards Jessica and has kept making similar comments about her to the press even after her injury (something about Jessica not being able to continue on the competition both for her physical and emotional weakness or some such nonsense) that at this point I would be immensely happy if she doesn't return as a judge for the rest of the season. Ugh. Jessica was never my favourite, but she was treated like crap by the judges for no reason other than to praise the "genius" that is Will, one of the harshest being Mia, and that just pisses me off, especially when Kherington got a pass for messing up the second half of her krump in a way the judges would have totally crucified Jessica if it had been her. I hate the blatant favouritism on this show. Can you tell I take this wayyy too personally? Heh.

On a more positive note, I'm so happy at least Chelsie and Katee made the Top 10. I hope they can draw enough votes for themselves on their own.

SPOILER

Jessica has been dancing with broken ribs for a couple weeks. For those few weeks she thought they were just cramps, but she couldn't take it anymore and went to the doctor and they didn't clear her to dance so she is not returning to the top 10.

It may have happened during the disco routine when the overpraised Will dropped her on her side.

It's Will's Fault!!!

Thanks for the info about Jessica. I was wondering what could be injured. If it really is the ribs, then I know exactly where it happened. Will dropped her on the one routine where she saved him in the end by putting her arm out to match his after he lost his balance for the final pose. When she went down for that helicopter spin on the floor, Will dropped her and she hit her side, hard. She's such a champ that she didn't show any pain and still carried him through the rest of the routine. I love her. I'm still convinced Debbie Allen has something to do with Jessica being off the show. Will is the most overrated dancer I've seen on SYTYCD. He doesn't compare to Blake or Danny, or even Benji, IMO. The judges have definite favorites. I also take this stuff too personally :)

Jessica

She hit pretty hard when he dropped her. But she soldiered on.

She was my favourite dancer, and its going to suck with her not being on the show anymore.

After the dancer introductions apparently she goes on stage and talks about the injury and then goes into the audience or something of that sort. I really hope Mia apologizes for what she said about her last week.

Mama Mia

Mia, in defense of herself, said she's just trying to bring out the absolute best in the dancers, but I think she's just being horrible.  And she calls herself "Mama Mia."  Hah!  Did you see the b-roll of her barking at the dancers from a few weeks ago?  I'll take Mary's shrill everything to another nasty comment by Meanie Mia.

Jessica... oh this was kinda

Jessica... oh this was kinda bound to happen.. either she quits... because, to me all the pressure's on her because it's so much to bear w/ this Will-worshiping as u mentioned... or she get's an "unexplainable" injury that will cut her off... but Comfort... c'mon, the gal's good... but whatever happend to Kourtney L... I thought she should've stayed, friggin Matt was the fault on that pairing. sheesh

What's with all the Will

What's with all the Will hate? He's an amazing dancer and hasn't been rude or nasty at all. I just don't get the negativity

It's not really directed at Will

The "Will Hate" is really just a manifestation of my (and possibly others') desire to defend Jessica, especially in light of the comments each week from the judges. I've said before that Will is a decent dancer. He's above average for this season, average when you think of all the great dancers the show has had in its four seasons. He doesn't compare to Blake, Danny, Travis, Pasha, etc., but he's fine. So, I don't really have a problem with Will.

The real problem is the reality-defying nonsense the judges seem to throw at Jessica after each performance she did with Will. We've mentioned on other posts how Jessica has saved mutliples routines from Will mistakes, only to have the judges then gush over Will's unparalleled greatness and perfection, and beauty, etc., while telling Jessica that she's barely better than a drunken cow with three legs. Whatever. It's very likely Jessica got her broken ribs when Will dropped her a few weeks ago. He mentally checked out of that dance after dropping her and she had to save him at the end of it.

Look at tonight's pas de deux with Katee. Will once again messed up in his spacing, holding Katee too close while spinning her. She slammed into his shoulder and it broke up the entire routine. Will looked baffled again for the rest of the routine. It was awkward to watch and I felt bad for them. But the judges then go on and praise them like it's the best thing they ever saw. Nigel finally mentioned the huge blunder, but swept it under the rug. That's just too much. Someone's trying to advance Will further than he deserves. That's why I'm bothered, at least. And I hate that it was at the expense of Jessica earlier.
