Sixteen songs better than Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl"

Everyone has their list. Here’s mine — and no, it’s not a list of best make-out songs. Rather, it’s a list of songs that empower me — and maybe you — with clear woman-loving lyrics.

1. “I Kissed a Girl” — Jill Sobule. According to a recent article in Performing Songwriter, she really did kiss a girl. I love this bouncy singalong, and I love that it got so much airplay. Frankly, I just love Jill Sobule. I want to take her home and make her tuna casserole.

2. “Amazon” — Maxine Feldman. She called herself an out, proud, Jewish butch back when queer bars were raided on a regular basis. Her affirming songs and funny stage manner were a breath of fresh air. Nedra Johnson does a more modern version of the song that kicks major booty.

3. “Boinked (the Bride)” — Ember Swift. I love funny tunes and this one makes me burst into giggles every time.

4. “Ode to a Gym Teacher” — Meg Christian (pictured below with Cris Williamson). Who didn’t fall in love with their gym teacher? Oh, biceps!

5. “A Woman’s Love” — Alix Dobkin. She has so many out lesbian tunes and this is my favorite. I heard Therese Edell do this at one of my first women’s music concerts. Oh that sexy alto voice!

6. “Drive” — Melissa Ferrick. You knew I was going to include this one, right? You have to hear it live. If you’re not lusting after women before you hear it, you will afterward. (Hey, we do recruit.)

7. “32 Lines” — Sophie B. Hawkins. “I’ll lead you home / to Provincetown.” You sure can.

8. “If It Isn’t Her” — Ani DiFranco. I probably rewound this tape (yes, it was that long ago) a million times to hear this song. “I have been playing too many of those boy-girl games / she says honey you are safe here / this is a girl-girl thing.”

9. “Yes I Am” — Melissa Etheridge. The lyrics are a bit vague, “Yes you are ..." (Cute? Sexy?). But given the timing of this song (not long after she publicly came out), it’s damn clear enough for me. This is one you want to crank up on the way home from your mother’s after she’s asked yet again, “Dating any nice boys?”

10. “I Spent My Last Ten Dollars” — Two Nice Girls. “My life was so much simpler when I was sober and queer.” Ain’t that the truth?

11.“Romeo and Juliet” — Indigo Girls. I know they didn’t write it, but in their capable hands it’s a 10 on the lesbian scale.

12. “Prove It On Me Blues” — Ma Rainey. A blues shouter popular in the '20s and '30s, she was married to a man but made no secret of her love for women: “Went out last night with a crowd of my friends / They must have been women ’cause I don’t like no men.”

13. “Sweet Woman” — Cris Williamson. Older readers would beat me with an organic carrot if I didn’t include this one. All right, so I love it too.

14. “Radical” — Catie Curtis. It’s a sweet anthem, perfect for when you need a gentle reminder of who we are.

15. “Imagine My Surprise” — Holly Near. We were surprised and delighted when this performer of women’s music claimed her love for a woman.

16. “Every Woman” — Sweet Honey in the Rock. “Every woman who ever loved a woman / you ought to stand up and call her name.” Amen!

There are a few that almost made the list, like “Young James Dean” by Girlyman, “Sway of Her Hips” performed by Teresa Trull and Barbara Higbie, “Let the Rainbow Shine” by Judy Small, “Leaping Lesbians” performed by Sue Fink and Teresa Trull’s “Woman Loving Woman.”

I know this list is lacking so fill me in, OK? What are your favorite lesbian songs, and why?

Ok, I know it's not a gay song per se (lyrics seem fitting tho!), but Jann Arden's lyrically unchanged cover of You Don't Know Me just makes me swoon. But to break my heart? Quarterflash's Valerie.

This is the bit where I

This is the bit where I confess that I don't listen to, like, any women at all, isn't it? I grew up identified with the male rocker, so I just twist those songs, like for example Bruce Springsteen's "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" ("Windows are for cheaters, chimneys for the poor/closets are for hangers, winners use the door") or Billy Joel's "Only The Good Die Young" (yes, "come out" is a useful pair of words.) With that standard, Tori Amos's cover of "I'm On Fire" is the closest I can get.

I'm kind of surprised I even recognized any of yours there ("Romeo and Juliet" will always be an Indigo Girls song to me. So will "Tangled Up In Blue." And my Holly Near song of choice is "Perfect Night.")

I've got -- I often think Suzanne Vega, but I can't think of any song names. Uhhh... "ultimate hyphen" Claudia Christian broke my mind recently with this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeP7c0QaokY

Does that count? No? Thought not. So far as entertainment goes, I'm a very bad lesbian indeed. :-( [insert cheesy pickup line here]

oooh more lists!

what about dar williams? "iowa" for one...

and while "drive" is classic, id have to go with some other m ferrick songs. "one night stand" is awesome - and totally reminds me of what it's like hooking up with straight girls...

above all, though, id say "both hands" takes the cake. is there a song that is more sexy / sad all at the same time??? didnt think so.

Hannah's picture

Iowa

Interestingly enough, there had been a lot of speculation about whether or not Dar was gay, and she kinda liked that, because she wanted her music to speak to everyone. She has said in interviews that when she wrote "Iowa" she thought, "Well, now everyone will figure out I'm straight." Instead, everyone thinks of it as the most lesbian song she's written.

Moral of the story? Never underestimate the power of the gay googles!

"If it isn't Her" just started playing on my ITunes shuffle. I love that song. I do not know many of the other songs but a may check a couple of them out. Personally I have been listening to a lot of Hunter Valentine lately.

So many!

I guess I'd have to say "I Got You" by Kaia Wilson, on her latest solo album (y'know the super hot frontwoman from The Butchies and guitarist in team dresch?!) because of these lyrics: "12 years old lookin' at shirts, I'm 13 I'm looking at skirts, I'm looking at girls they're not looking at me. I'm pretty sure I'll be forever lonely" :/ tis sad *sigh*

Katy Perry is so sexist

I'd be glad to listen to any of these women ahead of Perry. Her songs seem so sexist to me its disgusting. Take her latest one, equating women to emotionally unstable, almost bipolar people. Ugh.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

All You Got - Tegan and Sara

Here the lights fall just as hard a bit softer in the stall
It's not really wrong it's not really right
I'm wide awake
She's upfront upshot upstart up in every case
The kind of girl that whispers
Thank god for you

Ooh yeah, all you got is me
Ooh yeah, all you'll need is me

Her confusion is in the night that I stumbled
It's in the morning that I
That I struggled
Because I start to forget but she will always remember
The kind of girl who laughs and says
Get up off your knees

Ooh yeah all you'll need is me
Ooh yeah all you'll want is me (2x)

So you come, so you go
Tell me how hard how fast
Baby tell me how high I must go
Tell me what you want
Tell me what you need
Tell me how hard how fast
Baby tell me how high I must go
Tell me how high I must go

"Pretty Baby"

Stars live in the evening
But the very young need the sun, uh-huh
Pretty baby, you look so heavenly
A neo-nebular from under the sun
I was forming, some say I had my chance
The boys were falling like an avalanche

Ya ya baby
La Dolce Vita is a magic dance
No-one was listening
Pretty baby, un petite ingenue
A teenage starlet, I fell in love with you

You, you with the comb
You look OK in every way (every way)
Ah, I should have known
You'd look at me and look away (and look away - oh)

Pretty baby, you look so heavenly
A neo-nebular from under the sun
Eyes that tell me incense and peppermints
Your looks are larger than life, long live innocence
Petite ingenue, I fell in love with you
Pretty baby, I fell in love with you, whoah oh
Pretty baby, oh oh
Pretty baby, whoah oh, I fell in love with you

"Sunday Girl"

I know a girl from a lonely street
Cold as ice cream but still as sweet
Dry your eyes Sunday girl
Hey, I saw your guy with a different girl
Looks like he's in another world
Run and hide Sunday girl

Hurry up, hurry up and wait
I say awake all week and still I wait
I got the blues, please come see
What your loving means to me

She can't catch up with the working crowd
The weekend mood and she's feeling proud
Live in dreams Sunday girl

Baby, I would like to go out tonight
If I go with you my folks'll get uptight
Stay at home Sunday girl

Hey, I saw your guy with a different girl
Looks like he's in another world
Run and hide Sunday girl

When I saw you again in the summertime
If your love was as sweet as mine
I could be Sunday's girl

Hurry up, hurry up and wait
I say awake all week and still I wait
I got the blues, please come see
What your loving means to me

I got the blues

(Based on the old poem)

Monday's child is fair of face.
Tuesday's child is full of grace.
Wednesday's child is full of woe.
Thursday's child has far to go.
Friday's child is loving and giving.
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Suzanne Vega's "Stockings," anything by Phranc

Anything by Phranc - "Amazons," "M-A-R-T-I-N-A"

Luscious Jackson - "Ladyfingers"

Suzanne Vega - "Stockings"
Do you know where friendship ends
and passion does begin?
It's between the binding of
her stockings and her skin.

I saw Suzanne Vega perform "Stockings" live, and she really played it up.

This next one's not overtly gay, but these are the lyrics I came out to ~

Sarah McLachlan - "Elsewhere"
Mother can't you see I've got
to live my life the way I feel is right for me
might not be right for you but it's right for me...
I believe...
I believe
this is heaven to no one else but me
and I'll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
if I choose to
would you try to understand it

There are also a lot of "men's" songs covered by women without changing the lyrics.

Joan Osborne - "Brick House"
She's a brick house
She's mighty mighty just lettin' it all hang out
A brick house
The lady's stacked and that's a fact
I ain't holding nothing back

Joan Osborne - "Spooky"
I get confused, 'cause I don't know where I stand,
And then you smile, and hold my hand.
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you.

Melissa Etheridge - "Maggie Mae"

Chantal Kreviazuk - "Always a Woman"

Tori Amos - "Angie"

Indigo Girls - "Tangled Up in Blue"

Sheryl Crow - "Squeeze Box"
Just to hear Sheryl singing, "She goes in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out." It's almost good as all those sounds she makes when singing Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Mak'er."

Alanis Morissette - "King of Pain"

Indigo Girls & Ani DiFranco - "Ramblin' Round"

Ani DiFranco & Aimee Mann - "When Doves Cry"

And the most lesbian song ever - leave it to Meg Christian to combine relationships and politics.

Meg Christian - "Look Within"

Favorite lines:

I'm waiting for the revolution
For the President to have a spiritual transfusion
I'm looking for the holy ghost
And for you to say you love me the most
...
I'm waiting for my shell to crack
For Mother Nature to take all her Adam's back
...
I'm waiting for the mad hatter
For Jerry Falwell's head on a silver platter
I'm waiting for an end to war
And for The Millionaire to knock on my door
...
And I'm waiting for you to get your s**t together

Stockings live

That's why I said I saw her play it live - she was playing to the audience, which happened to have a lot of lesbians in it. I can't remember exactly what she said beforehand, but she encouraged us to re-interpret it. I guess you had to be there, see how she sang it.

Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover - Sophie B. Hawkins

Les Femmes - Yelle

maybe I'm just a big ol' Buffy geek but... Under Your Spell - Amber Benson

Both Hands; Two Little Girls - bot by Ani DiFranco

I haven't heard a lot of the songs mentioned, but I do like Romeo and Juliet and I Kissed a Girl (Sobule of course). And Tegan and Sara and Ani DiFranco are always winners in my book.

Bif Naked!

Bif Naked was one of the first queer artists I ever listened to, and I remember the elation that washed over me as I heard a woman plainly singing about another woman. "Everything" is so awesome:

my mother gave me one more reason not to call you on the phone
she told me chase girls like that all your life, you will wind up alone
I guess I just would like to take you out for a cappuccino
you refuse my advances once again -- I can't hear one more "no"

I wish you would get over him
I'll change your mind about everything

when I wink at you, you always turn the other cheek
I drilled a hole in the girls' showers so that at you I could peek
I'd love to get you naked and throw you in the back of my dad's car
I hear that if I get to third base with you, it won’t be too far

I wish you would get over him
I'll change your mind about everything

as I grow older I feel better about me and myself
I swear I never, ever once wished I was anybody else
I'd like to tell you I think you should come up and see me sometime
I know that I could possibly make it the best time of your life

I wish you would get over him
I'll change your mind about everything

Oh I love this list! Ma Rainey....

I was thinking, when I saw the list that I hoped it had Ma Rainey, she grew up in the same town as me, which has always been super conservative and I just think she is soo cool for being out back in those times. But I wanted to add that she had a lesbian sex party that the cops raided once, and when she was running away, she fell down a flight of stairs completely naked! She was arrested and her friend, another famous blues singer, bailed her out, and all was well.

Oh don't forget the Murmurs- Genius. Its such a super cute song! Don't we all love those kind of freaky girls from time to time.

The Homo Song!!

Most definitely THE HOMO SONG BY MARA LEVI

http://www.myspace.com/maralevi

Dear old Mrs. So and So,
I thought I'd call and let you know
Your daughter is a big HOMO
And she's lying next to me

She came here of her own volition
No doubt wasting her tuition
Still it's true and now you're wishin'
She weren't here with me

She's been acting out this way
Since long before the fateful day
I brought her home so she could stay
Lying next to me

No matter how you sulk and fret
It's only girls that make her wet
And since it's true, well you can bet
She's lying next to me

Dear old Mr.. So and So,
I thought I'd call and let you know
Your daughter is a big HOMO
And she's lying next to me

She loves you still, she always will
But you can't fix her with a pill
Or try to take away the thrill
Of lying next to me

She wants your love and your respect
But if you push, she'll push right back
'Cause she's got friends and you've got JACK
If you don't let her be

For the apple of your eye
There must be something you can try
'Cause I can't stand to see her cry
Lying next to me

Dear old Mrs. So and So,
Just call her up and let her know
She can be a big HOMO
And you'll still love her so.

I think she pretends to be a man during the song, because she sings with a very low voice.

Catherine De Barra
You've murdered my thinking
I gave you my heart
You left the thing stinking
I'd shake from your spell
If it weren't for my drinking
The wind bites more bitter
With each light of morning

I envy the road
The ground you tread under
I envy the wind
Your hair riding over
I envy the pillow
Your head rests and slumbers
I envy to murderous
Envy your lover

'Til the light shines on me
I damn to hell every second you breath
'Til the light shines on me
I damn to hell every second you breath

I envy the road
The ground you tread under
I envy the wind
Your hair riding over
I envy the pillow
Your head rests and slumbers
I envy to murderous
Envy your lover

'Til the light shines on me
I damn to hell every second you breath
'Til the light shines on me
I damn to hell every second you breath

For your eyes smiling
For your mouth singing
With time I'd have won you
Oh my Catherine
With time I'd have won you
With wile I'd have won you

Dicke Weiber und Roulette by Zweitfrau

The video speaks volumes in terms of imagery! (just watch the first seconds, and you know what I mean)

The lyrics too:

..Ich geh als Mädchen mit Mädchen ins Bett...

..Und denk an schicke Weiber, dicke Weiber und Roulette...

(which roughly translates as:)

...as a girl I sleep with girls...

...and think about sophisticated girls, big girls and roulette...

History Lesson

Back in the 1970s when I first came out there was a woman named Anita Bryant, a spokesperson for Florida orange juice, who went on an anti-gay campaign of her own devising.  Olivia Records, whose artist roster included many of the artists on this list, put out a compilation album called "Lesbian Concentrate" as sort of a spoof on Ms. Bryant's orange juice endorsement.

My friends and I had our first exposure to music actually written, recorded and sung to US in this album.  Meg Christian, Cris Williamson, Teresa Trull, Holly Near et al. became our icons, OUR artists.  It made me very happy and nostalgic to see them included in this list.

I'd also add "I Want You" from Melissa Etheridge's first album (in fact, I'd replace "Yes I Am" with this track) to your list.  All the quaking, maddening passion in that song still gets to me the same way as it did over two decades ago when I first saw her perform it live.  I heard Melissa Ferrick's "Drive" for the first time yesterday and it effected me the same way.

Thank God for women who make music for other women!

Lots of good tunes here (especially M. Ndegeocello!), but I'm always surprised there's not more Doria love on AfterEllen.  Hard to pick one thing of hers, but in terms of out-and-proudness, I've gotta go with "Iguana":

Andb one of the best lines ever, which just has to be heard live to fully appreciate:

Not a lesbian song as such but you should check out Black is the Colour by Cara Dillon.

"Black is the colour of my true love's hair. Her lips are like a rose so fair..." etc.

It might be an existing folk song and she hasn't changed the pronouns and/or it may have been written by a man but I don't really care when I'm listening to it. Its a gorgeous song.

And btw, where on earth can I get a copy of Sheryl Crow's Squeeze Box? I saw her perform it on a UK chat show years ago and loved it but I don't think its ever been released.
