Alison Krauss goes up against Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift at this year's CMAs

Alison Krauss is nominated for two CMAs, and she doesn’t even have big hair.

If you’re saying “Huh?" then you must not be a country music fan, because the Country Music Association's awards are bigger than Dolly Parton’s hair. (And you know the old saying: The higher the hair, the closer to God.) Alison Krauss is a singer/fiddler who’s been blazin’ some pretty fine trails since she burst on the bluegrass scene at the tender age of 14. Twenty Grammys later (and only in her 30s), she’s still kickin’ it and doing it as an independent. How twangin’ cool is that?

The CMA has nominated her for Female Vocalist of the Year (something she’s garnered three out of the last four years) and with Robert Plant for Musical Event of the Year. Yes, the Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. But we'll have to wait until Nov. 12 to see if she's won.

Other nominees in the female vocalist category include Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. I’m rooting for Krauss, although I wouldn’t cry if McBride won. I’d like to see Swift finish high school first.

On Nov. 11, the day before the awards show, Krauss will release a DVD featuring her band, Union Station, and several guests, including James Taylor and Brad Paisley. Krauss may be the only woman on the release — not that I have anything against honky tonkin’ men but hey, where are the ladies?

I’ll be glued to my TV screen in Nov. to see who wins. How about you?

Alison should win

I think she has the most beautyful voice I 've ever heard... and I heard a lot. And I think she is down to earth.

Alison Krauss & Robert Plant

OMG! If you haven't heard their album, "Raising Sand", at least download "Rich Woman." Listening to them sing "I've got a woman with plenty of money/She got the money and I got the honey/Called my honey late last night/She told me "Daddy, everything was alright/I don't have to worry 'cause she's real fine/I know my baby and she's all mine/She gives me Cadillac and diamond rigns/She told me 'Daddy, don't you worry about a thing'" is an aural experienced not to be missed. And yes, SHE is singing those lyrics, sans irony, just straight forward.

Apparently she's been asked about this, and her answer - that she didn't feel any need to mess with the lyrics the way they were written - only demostrates a fierce independent streak that is rare in today's country music scene.

I am not a country music person, I found out about this album via an interview on "Charlie Rose." But I do love good music and the more I learn about Ms. Krauss, the more I've come to love her music.

Also

Also, in "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" she kept the woman-directed lyrics intact, i.e. "Once I had myself a good woman/ but I just didn't treat her right" etc. It's quite nice hearing a woman sing that song.

I think one of the highlights of my musical life was seeing Plant and Krauss perform at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Krauss' voice is even more swoon-worthy live.

Krauss all the way!!

I saw her live a few years ago when she was here in Glasgow + she was absolutely AMAZING!!!! I've seen many bands/artists live (including Elton John, Gloria Estefan, The Eagles + Shania Twain to name but a few) and she was amoung the best!!

I also love Martina McBride, so I guess if either win I'll be happy, but I think I'd be slightly happier if it was Alison that won!!

NOT Country

The Krauss/Plant collaboration is not at all country in the traditional sense--if anything it's roots music or Americana... I hate that it gets branded country and then the scores of people who say "I like all music but country" won't listen to it!

A good omen

The first time I went to the house of my now-partner-of-eight-years, she put on an Alison Krauss CD and I knew I had a keeper. Actually, there was a lot more to it than that, but you know what I mean, right?

The songs that I have of

The songs that I have of hers like "Stay" and "Maybe" are SO sad -- but I love them!

IF Swift wins, let's hope McBride and Krauss don't pull a Faith Hill!

Do I know her from the Buffy soundtrack?

...or am I mixing her up with someone else?

I don't really care for country, but she does have a great voice.

No Mix Up

A couple of Krauss' tunes were featured on Buffy: 'It Doesn't Matter' in season two's 'When She was Bad' and 'That Kind of Love' in 'Entropy' from season six.

Alison Krauss at Red Rocks...

If anyone knows ANY thing about Red Rocks Amphitheater here in Colorado, you know or have heard that concerts held there are spectacular in every sense of the word.  Toss in a clear starry night, a violin, a mandolin, a guitar and a beautiful voice and you have Heaven.  I swear, it was Alison, a mandolin player, a guitar player, and there may have been one other guy playing keyboard(?).  Needless to say it was four people at most, standing on an oriental rug in the middle of the stage and it was THE BEST concert I have ever had the pleasure of attending.  This Krauss lover hopes she wins.

Best album of last year

Loads of music journalists in the UK pegged Raising Sand as the best Album of 2007.

I asked for it for Christmas and it still gets played more than my more recent purchases! I've recommended it to everyone I know. The concert in Cardiff was fantastic. You could see who was there for Robert and who was there for Alison, but she had won around all the Zepp fans by the end of the night with her talent.

And as others have said, it's not a country album. Roots / Americana / Old Rhythm & Blues / ballads it's not really defineable other than being gorgeous and good for reading the paper to, dinner party background, driving, cleaning the house...everything!

I made my girlfriend go and see Alison Krauss and the Union Station at the Hammersmith Apollo in London a few years ago and it converted her to country music for good, I am delighted to say!

I love Alison Krauss...

I love her music, still can't listen to it without my heart going into my throat.  It just has that effect.
