Wanda Sykes is one of The Advocate's People of the YearEach year, The Advocate names its People of the Year, “a handful of names that made headlines, made a difference, or simply made us talk.” They just released a couple of names as a teaser and one of them is actress and comedian Wanda Sykes.
Sykes has always been an outspoken supporter of gay rights. Having previously kept her sexuality private, Sykes http://www.afterellen.com/people/2008/11/wanda-sykes-comes-out “>came out at a rally in Las Vegas after California Proposition 8 was passed. She cited the passing of Proposition 8 as the catalyst behind her decision to come out: We took a huge leap forward and then got dragged 12 feet back. I felt like I was being attacked, personally attacked — our community was attacked… Now, I gotta get in their face. I'm proud to be a woman. I'm proud to be a black woman, and I'm proud to be gay. It is a refreshing sign that not all magazines that tout themselves as serving the gay and — ahem — lesbian community have been suffering from a cognitive disconnect. (Yes, we're still mad about this.)
But it looks like The Advocate's list will be much more substantial and inclusive. At least, it is a good start. Who do you expect to see on the People of the Year list? Submitted by on December 3, 2008 - 1:30pm. |

Maddow and Hildebrand
It's so great to see a woman of color represent on the People of the Year list. Her decision to come out publicly and loudly is going to have a great impact in a lot of communities.
As for who I'd like to see on the list, I think, obviously Rachel Maddow's at the top of my list. I also hope they recognize Steve Hildebrand, an out gay man who served as national deputy director of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. He was the genius behind Obama's ground game and definitely deserves recognition.

wanda sykes and rachel
wanda sykes and rachel maddow are THE women of the year that immediately come to mind imo.
I was hoping more closeted or not out, loud and proud gay-brities would come out especially after wanda did.

Congrats to Wanda Sykes I agree it's soooooooooooooo nice to see a person of color espeically a womyn of color whose a lesbian and is out and is proud.
I want to respond to pecola's statement: "I also hope they recognize Steve Hildebrand, an out gay man who served as national deputy director of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. He was the genius behind Obama's ground game and definitely deserves recognition. "
Really, Barack appointed an openly gay man as a national deputy director. So proud of him. He's def heaven sent. On that note, I heard there's a lesbian appointed to his cabinet or he will appoint an open lesbian womyn to his cabinet. Any truth to this? Anybody?
The Short List
It's sort of true--she's on Obama's short list.
He's considering Mary Beth Maxwell, an out lesbian, to lead the Labor Department. She's the founding executive director of American Rights at Work and seems to be a consensus choice among labor organizations. David Bonior, a former Congressman and strong labor advocate from Michigan, was being considered for the post, but he's throwing his support to Maxwell. As far as I know, the only other name on the short list is Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas.
Just to show how inept LGBT advocacy organizations are: the HRC sent a letter to Obama last week pushing Rep. Linda Sanchez (CA-39) for the Labor job. Today, they sent another letter to the president-elect promoting Maxwell's candidacy. Think anyone's going to listen to them.

The Advocate
Definitely Rachel Maddow. She's made it cool to be smart.
I'm happy for Wanda Sykes, too. I think it's great that she took a stand.

Happy lucky go joy
I'm so glad that she came out!!!! This is what the community needs, EVERYONE OUT!
I mean, some people have their reasons to stay in the closet for a while, but when you look at our history and at the way things have been, we have to take a stand and come out in order to gain our true freedom...
(that didn't make sense, did it?)
