Papa Roach puts several lesbians to work in their new video

When a few AfterEllen.com readers tipped us off that the video for Papa Roach's latest single, "I Almost Told You That I Love You," contains a bunch of girls making out, my first reaction was "Papa Roach? They're still around?"

Papa Roach was part of the late '90s/early 00s nu-metal explosion that was ushered in by Korn and Limp Bizkit and was kept alive by bands like Linkin Park. Then, by the end of 2004 or so, the world got tired of hearing white dudes from California shriek-rap about their troubles with girls and not being loved by their parents, embracing instead eyeliner-wearing white dudes who shriek-wail earnestly yet cryptically about their troubles with girls and not being loved by their parents.

As emo became recycled and repackaged for mainstream audiences, nu-metal bands like Papa Roach faded from view. (OK, perhaps they haven't really gone anywhere and are still selling records, but for the past few years it was hard to see anything on MTV other than those boys falling out while panicking at the disco.)

But then, of course, after my moment of unplanned nostalgia, I searched for the video, sat back and cranked up the volume, because lesbians will sit through anything just to see ladies lock lips, and the last time I checked I was still a lesbian.

You can watch it on their site — and, just a warning, it's probably NSFW).

All I can say is wow. Singer Jacoby Shaddix has lost the pudgy skater look from the "Last Resort" days and looks like the L.A. rock scene threw up on him — but not necessarily in a bad way. Actually — dare I say it — he's looking a tad bit Shane lately. (Ducks.)

Additionally, Papa Roach's sound has become grittier, and instead of singing about wanting to off himself and growing up in a broken home,Shaddix sings about the following situation: After a session of especially hot sex, you are tempted to say "I love you," but then a light bulb in your head fortuitously switches on and stops you from dropping that chunk ofkryptonite on your lady lover with the superhero bedroom skills.

But then he continues: "I'm not the one that you want / not the one that you need / My love is like a f------g disease / You can give me your hand / you can make your demands / I'm the hardest f----r to please."

Oh please. We all know that the real reason he is thankful that he did not utter the three words of doom is that the girl would probably freak out and head for the hills, and the hot sex will end. All that passive-aggressive machismo doesn't fool me.

The video is dark, twisted, raw, sleazy, yet playful and sort of awesome. Everyone is either in a state of ecstasy (most likely brought on by doing ecstasy), and is engaged in couplings from the vanilla to the bizarre. The video also features extreme body modification techniques, and if you get squeamish easily, you might want to Google "suspension body modification" before deciding whether you want to see the video.

Here we have two furries (i.e. people who find pleasure engaging in sex acts while dressed as large muppets). The teddy bear and the bluebird are in the throes of passion; this gives a new twist to the phrase "doggy style."

And here we have Shaddix getting his bare bottom whipped by a dominatrix.

All right, Grace, you say. We came here to see the hot women kissing, not muppets "rubbing felt" and definitely not Shaddix's uncovered arse. Fine. Point taken.

Scenes of various women kissing each other appear sporadically in the video, probably to allow viewers to rest their eyes and see something pretty between the more grotesque and WTF scenes. Haven't we come a long way, ladies? It wasn't long ago when girl-on-girl smooching was used for shock value. Here, the kissing girls exist to soothe the viewers' bleeding eyes.

If you make it through the meat hook scene, be sure to watch the last thirty seconds or so for the very lesbionic ending. A Papa Roach video is probably the last place you'd expect to see a scene that lesbians can relate to, but trust me — it's classic.

    Suicide Girls, anyone?

Yay - Papa Roach is back with a decent single. Thanks for sharing!

I don't think they've stopped making music, but they weren't noticed much. And I actually like the video - thanks to a lot of tattooed ladies :)

Uh, yea, I would be one of those girls who'd run for the hills if anyone would say those three words to me. Does that make me less or more of a lesbian? ;)

    My friend actually showed me

My friend actually showed me the video a few months ago. He was like-hey your a lesbian, here watch this. Lol. The video is good but it goes kinda fast and I don't like the fact that it's sleazy-for-men action rather than sleazy-for-lesbian action. Not that Its expected it to be. Still a good watch.

    Ugh, how repulsive. The g/g

Ugh, how repulsive. The g/g kissing was nice but it's sooo not worth having to watch all of the graphic bdsm added on to it and listening to the nonsensical lyrics the lead singer is spewing out. I'm so tired of dudes singing about blowjobs and using women for sex already. Machismo really is getting old. And the fact that all of these other sexual taboos are going on in the video, I think that it just portrays lesbianism as though it were in the same category and turns it into a sleezy male fantasy which doesn't help the community at all. I actually was kinda into papa roach but this new single just dosn't do it to me.

    Last 30 seconds

Loved the ending...I didn't bother watching the rest of it (suspension body modification? no thanks), but thought that the ending was great.

    not too bad

I like that it actually acknowledges lesbian relationships.  It's not just chicks making out, there is actually the connection between the two women at the end.  It's a step, a small one, but still a step.

    Not worth it

Was the final frame "twist" worth sitting through this BS?  No.

I kind of liked the video

Okay, now I kind of feel like a sick perv or something, because I actually kind of enjoyed the video. Don't get me wrong, I'm not jumping in line to be suspended to the ceiling by the skin on my back, but still... I liked it and the song too.

    Papa Roach

I'm a fan of Papa Roach, this isn't their first time putting lesbians in their videos such as Getting Away with Murder at http://paparoach.com/media/videos/101/270
In that video it's just two chicks making out, but I think this one is a better representation just because hell, there was so much diversity that the couples just fit in. You had a few straight couples, a few lesbian couples, furries, BDSM, and just overall captured the wide-range feeling of "sex" in song form lmao.
I also want to note how cool it was of them to feature different body types of women too. (There were some uber skinny ones, medium ones, and some larger body types as well).
I like them better when they're more themselves in this grundgy theme, instead of more poppy-rock like what they did with Scars.
I have this song on my ipod, and will buy the album

    O, Papa Roach...

I've liked ONE single of theirs since 2004: Getting Away With Murder...

And everyone was losing their minds over Scars on that record but I never got into it, never heard a song that really made me want to buy a record.

And this video is crazy, but I'm still at a loss for words about the end! It's great and really unexpected that the most real thing, the actual point of the song would be portrayed by lesbians in that way....and also like you were saying the lesbians were a way to ease off the crazy stuff, none of the crazy sexual things involved lesbians..

    This was...

...really awesome, in my opinion. I liked the feel of the video. Well...except for the body suspension.  I really like the song, and it's nice to see Papa Roach coming out with something new.

    Papa Roach

Papa Roach are a band whose videos I will watch all the way through a couple of time (not a favourite though).

I feel like it is a video that would not serve well to over analyze, so I am trying not to do so.

I ilked it. But then again I have always kind of wanted to try suspension. . .

    -loved that line

And the girls were definitely the step away from the pure raunch going on.

    Sold Out

Come on, this single is plus one drum machine, minus one distorted guitar riff away from being a cheesey rock single to being a cheesey R'n'B single. I wonder who they bought it from?

    bwahaha

i dont think any of us were actually listening to the song so no harm done to my ears

no matter what they do, i

no matter what they do, i will always associate papa roach with something sleazy and gross. because that's what they are.

their sound is completey unoriginal. and the video was like watching a recap of an episode of 'a shot at love with tila tequila' set to bad music.

    just... bad.

    emileezer's picture

    Fun Fact...

I used to work with Jacoby's step dad Bill......  Totally normal guy.

    the girls were hot

i like the twist in the end. as for their music and style? soften the music a lil bit and make it a lil more pop bam! Good Charlotte!

i still prefer the old Papa Roach...after Infest they sort of became commercialized (same as linkin park and korn) imo..
