Major chains are taking the titty out of the "Itty Bitty Titty Committee"As you may already know, the film Itty Bitty Titty Committee was released on DVD last Tuesday. I missed the film while it was playing on the festival circuit, so last Friday, I decided to venture to the nearest Hollywood Video to purchase the DVD. I wasn't able to find the title on the floor, so I asked the sales clerk to search the store's inventory. After running a search on a computer, the sales clerk replied that there was no such title. He told me that the store carried a title called Itty Bitty Committee but not Itty Bitty Titty Committee. "No, that's not the one," I said. "The title of the film I’m looking for definitely has the word 'titty.'" He said the title Itty Bitty Committee was a new release and motioned for me to look at the computer screen. After taking a look, I realized the operative word in the title had been taken out. It turned out that all copies of the de-tittified title had already been sold, so I went to the nearest Blockbuster to rent the film.
Like Hollywood Video, Blockbuster also opted to offer the film without the word “titty,” at least in its brick and mortar stores. Oddly enough, as if the process of opening the box, taking out the DVD and playing said DVD were a strip tease, the label on the DVD contained half-censorship: Itty Bitty T**ty Committee.
And finally, after one inserts the DVD into the DVD player, one can finally see the uncensored title in full on the title screen.
I thought that this charade was completely absurd, so I did a bit of research on the de-tittifying of the packaging of the film. I found an explanation on Power Up!’s web site:
What is so horrifying about the word "titty" that caused two retailers to pass on selling the film altogether (even after being given the option of removing the word from the outside packaging)? Has our society not progressed past the point where a harmless slang term for a body part possessed by 50 percent of the population must be shielded from view? Are retailers afraid that some people may spontaneously combust out of distress or end up in a mental institution as a result of seeing the word “titty”? In addition to the fact that the words “itty bitty” are supposed to modify the word “titty” and not the word “committee” — and that without the word “titty,” the title makes absolutely no sense —-- removing the word “titty” from the title takes away from the central message in the film. The dominant theme in the film is that women should not be ashamed of their breasts, no matter how small they are. Women should not hide them; women should not augment them beyond recognition; instead, women should be proud of their breasts. Some retailers are apparently so ashamed of displaying a colloquialism for the word “breasts,” that they have removed the word entirely. In other words, they have sent out a message that breasts are inherently shameful. Talk about ironic. As Wolfe Films president Maria Lynn astutely pointed out, “You have [Saturday Night Live sketch] ‘Dick in a Box’ win an Emmy last year, and the word ‘titty’ is offensive.” What are your thoughts? Oh Americans and their sillyness.
This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.

Don't really see the problem
To be fair guys if its in a video store or a department store then kids have access and some parents might not want them repeating the word titty.Yes it seems a little silly to me as i'm originally from England where they wouldn't censor it but the US is a little sensitive about bad language so I accept this, and think even if it had been a straight movie it would still be censored. It's just great that it's getting a release in Blockbusters etc so more people have access to a this good movie.
It's the makers fault anyway for giving it a stupid, overly long and tenuiously linked title, they should have thought of this before they named it-I always hated the title, but I did get the full titled dvd version.
Reminds me of the days of
Reminds me of the days of the "V Monologues." Actually, I think censoring the word vagina was worse because it's such a clinical word, and "titty" is considered an offensive word by some people. But still, Itty Bitty Titty Committee is such a great title I hate to see it messed with.
So which retailers refused to sell the film altogether, even with the censored title? I don't think I'll be buying any DVDs from companies that are that prudish. Does one of them start with a Wal and end with a Mart by any chance?
All this ...
over one word?! Seems a bit OTT to me but if it means places will actually sell it I guess we will have to live with it....at least they didnt censor the front cover as well
:)
For the kids?
w-t-f??!!
this is ridiculous. really ridiculous.

THE real ? is WHY are they not willing to carry this film
"Despite some retailer concerns — two chains that are regular Wolfe customers are passing completely on the film"
So wolfe goes through all this trouble to please these MEN and they still won't carry this feminist lesbian COMEDY. WHY???????????
that is the real question...
ALSO has anyone noticed they all carry QUEER AS FOLK
and where I grew up "Queer" was a bad word and it was a MEAN WORD TO!
this is about much more that the word TITTY>>>>>>>>>>>>
DEAR BLOCKBUSTER:
I WANT MY TITTY BACK!
Ugh.
Itty Bitty Breast Committe
this is a little off topic but i actually do like the sound of 'itty bitty breast committee'. it has a nice ring haha.
on a more serious note, i think this censorship is rediculous. it's basic anatomy. it's just a silly word. get over yourselves, you strict CEO's. this is not what is causing all those kids to be messed up.
I don't know about anyone
I don't know about anyone else but we started the 'Itty Bitty Titty Committee' at my school when I was around ten years old. We were the IBTC. That was over 20 years ago so I would think that today's kids would be even more worldly if judging by the television programs and movies they watch and the music they listen to on a regular basis.
Also, am I wrong, or do many families with children take them to Hooters? I know they at the very least drive by that restaurant on a regular basis. That's okay, though?
Censorship sucks.
So "titty" is such a
So "titty" is such a horribly offensive word that it is completely removed from the title of a film, but a film called "Dick" is perfectly suitable for retailers to proudly display on their shelves. I don't care if the film is about Nixon, that just makes it doubly offensive!
And what about "Jackass," or does the simple fact that some viewers might, in the off chance that they grew up on a freakin farm, take this to mean donkey?
Since when does what we choose to watch or allow our children to see dictate what can be carried in stores? Drugstores have condoms hung right next to cough drops and candy, and small vibrators are now advertised in magazines and on billboards. Anyone seen an ad for lube on the side of a bus lately? Taking one word out of a title that needs it for simple clarification will not shield this country's youth any more than re-forming ice pops into a less suggestive shape. Kids are going to be around much worse things in their lives, so a simple slang word to refer to a part of human anatomy should be the least of their parents' worries!
"It might make Elizabeth Hasselbeck cry, but we're gonna do it." - Tina Fey
As the article mentions,
As the article mentions, and as a member commented above...it's fine for films to be called dick huh, or songs to have dick in the title.
Thing is, it all seems to stem from the fact female anatomy seems to be considered as more vulgar than male anatomy. Another example of the double standard that exists is the C word. I mean, what's the worst swear word you can say? Yeah, it also happens to be slang for a part of the female anatomy...but slang for the male genitalia are considered just jokey and a bit rude rather than highly offensive.
My favourite word is c***t for this very fact, because female genitalia isn't offensive to me *nods*
It's about time people stopped considering women as more offensive than men, as that's the message this puts across to me.
It's also pretty stupid that some stores won't sell this even if the cover has been censored. Smacks of puritan ignorance, and fear of women and equality.

they could've gone about this differently
they could've still carried the DVD with the full title included but not put it on shelves. if u wanted the film then u would've just had to ask someone who works behind the registers. it's not like people wouldn't have known about the film cuz w/e advertising they did would still be around ie. on the web, etc.
this is some fine stupidity imo. oy....

TITTY TITTIES TITS TITTY
Was Knocked Up censored?
Was Booty Call?
Was Dick?
I am sure there are many others I could list-
Couldn't all these film titles be considered offensive?
Obviously if you are releasing a mainstream film you don't have any rules...or maybe because of the content of the film and the fact that power-up put it out and it was made by women it is unfairly scrutinized and censored... It just makes me sick, how many will object to a movie portraying strong women.
The term itty bitty titty committee has been around since the 1970's, BUT the difference is the film isn't portraying it as an insult! If this film were insulting women, making fun of us or putting us in "our place"- would there be an objection?
They should have stuck a censored sticker over the word titty.
That's dumb. Changing the
That's dumb. Changing the name of "F*cking Amal" (aka "Show Me Love" in the US, I think, right?) was somewhat understandable, even if I thought it was lame (particularly because "Show Me Love" is a dumb title), but "titty"? Really?
For what it's worth, though, Blockbuster censors a lot of its films, not just its titles.
I really loathe the general habit of changing titles, though. I still don't get why "Sorcerer's Stone" is better than "Philosopher's Stone." And one of my favourite films is SUPPOSED to be called "Atarnajuat: The Fast Runner," but in this country? It's just "The Fast Runner." What's REALLY dumb about that is that it conceals the fact that the damn movie isn't even in English, it's in Inuktitut.
well i get why they change
well i get why they change the name of most foreign films. for one, a title helps to tell you something about the film and usually it's what peaks your interest in the movie. so a foreign film would have to be translated so that those of us in the U.S. would know what it's called. now the movie show me love...that definately makes sense. it's a sweedish film and thus the title is in sweedish... Fucking is an entirely different word in sweedish than it is in english. so yeah. that had to be translated immediately.

Incorrect.
What? Fucking Åmål IS an English title! Fucking means just that - fucking. Åmål is the name of a town, thus it is of course in Swedish, since there is no way to translate a town's name.
take back the titty
i never knew titty was considered so offensive or vulgar. i just thought it was a silly term everyone used. i guess i can see how blockbuster may feel the need to censor some titles, for the sake of parents and all the kids (though i don't think titty should be censored, that's ridiculous)....but i am disappointed in retailers, especially borders, who felt the need to delete the word. i think elle girl raised a good point...what about the movie jackass? i tried to google to see if it was censored and couldn't find anything. i think i'll go to my local borders and blockbuster tomorrow to see. i'm sure i've seen much more "vulgar/dirty/etc" titles there than titty. jackass i would think would be more cause for alarm for parents than titty.
i say we start a campaign against these retailers. we could protest outside of borders, topless of course, and yell things like "don't be shi**y, honor the titty!" and our chests emblazoned with phrases like "titty is pretty"... anyone game?
seriously though, i think this is ridiculous. but i was laughing out loud the way Grace wrote Oddly enough, as if the process of opening the box, taking out the DVD and playing said DVD were a strip tease, the label on the DVD contained half-censorship: Itty Bitty T**ty Committee.
that is too funny.
Dick wouldn't be censored
Dick wouldn't be censored b/c it's a nickname for Richard. How they got Dick from Richard I dont know, nor would I ever call someone that.
America, while we are better than some, still has a long way to go
Oh for Goodness Sake!
yes. it was quite
yes. it was quite enjoyable. and this is coming from someone who is about as far as "rad fem" as one can get. :)
i was prepared to hate it, but the film was funny, sharp, endearing and had great energy. and the soundtracked rocked.
wtf
Too vulgar or too pro terrorist
Wolfe video which is a gay fiilm distributor offered the packaging options so maybe some of the blame for this belongs on the gay commercial community's doorstep.
Second, it is possible some reluctance to stock the film has to do with its PRO TERRORIST TACTICS n the post 911 era.
REVOLT!
I work at blockbuster! and I
I love Blockbuster but..
I love Blockbuster but, honestly. I once went to rent "A Room With a View" and they had classified it as NC17, a rating they no longer even carry. I was astonished and when checking it out it was like checking out a porn film for the staff. This is a Merchant and Ivory film so I was clueless as to the classification (given to it by the store I believe, with a big red sticker, it couldn't have ever been released that way by the studios). So there is a very, very brief scene where the young strip and jump into a lake, there is perhaps a second of full frontal male nudity and that's it...
Chains like this do in part dictate what the studios release because they want to gain in rentals. It's so hard to release movies intended for adults. I'm not talking about porn, but even a movie like "When Night is Falling" had to be released without a rating so as to not get the NC-17 rating. Yet it's so easy to find the recent flood of torture pon rmovies like "Hostel" and "Captivity".
direct action
I vote that we all strip down and walk into our local video store and (inspired by one of the posts above) demand that "We want our Titties back!". That'll make 'em sit up and listen.
Meanwhile, I'm STILL bloody waiting for my copy of the dvd to arrive from Amazon!! I know Australia seems a long way away, but last time I did the trip it took less than a day to fly here. (Please don't tell me that when Amazon refers to "international shipping" it really does mean ships are involved...)
Not Only But Also
Amazon!!
Could've waited a little longer and supported your poor little struggling Aussie G&L Bookshop!
And we're dedicating a whole window to it...Titty's out and proud! :D

idc that there's censorship. here in effin NEBRASKA they have itty bitty "titty" committee. wow. that's amazing. here in NEBRASKA. the state with the most rigorous anti-gay marraige/civil union laws in the us, we not only have a copy, but it also says titty. wow.
gracias for the lack of censorship.
i want my movie to say titty goddamnit!
love and lust make fools of us all, but where would we be without them?
