Lady Gaga straps it on for "Q" magazine

Lady Gaga is currently gracing the cover of the UK’s Q Magazine wearing spider-like gloves, tight black pants, and a curious bulge that has the blogosphere buzzing.

Gaga's pop persona first served up consumer-friendly danceable tunes and quirky videos featuring scenesters bopping around in various house parties and eventually revealed itself to be much more complex and subversive, so it's not a surprise that the Q cover shoot is more than what (initially) meets the eye.

The much talked-about accessory does not jump out at you — it makes a subtle appearance. The first thing you notice is that she is topless, and it looks like a straightforward and oh-so-done-before sexy photo shoot of any young female pop star — with an Edward Scissorhands twist.

The second thing you notice is that she is wearing pants, because it is a detour from the norm.

Then, if your eyes happen to fall on the grey smudge on her right thigh, you might conclude that it is camera glare, but if you look a bit longer, you will see that she is packing, as she would put it, a disco stick, or — if I want to be more blatant — a p-p-p-poker. What appears to be just another cover shot of yet another pop tart staring blankly at the camera reveals itself to be deliciously subversive and cheeky. It’s contradictory. It’s meta. It’s Gaga. Is that a “f--k me” look she’s giving? Au contraire. The whole package says, “F--k you.”

But to whom?

In the interview, Gaga reveals that she wore a strap-on to the shoot to address rumors about her perceived gender. We’ve all come across rumors on the internet that Lady Gaga has a penis, and as you know, everything you read on the internet is true. After all, the internet told us about the untimely demise of Miley Cyrus, and the internet also memorialized the day that Kanye West supposedly started walking with Jesus. Imagine if the internet were around when the rumors about Richard Gere’s gerbil fetish started circulating. He wouldn’t be allowed within ten feet of a pet store or a research facility.

Some celebrities take the route of denying such rumors. Other simply say, “No comment.” But Lady Gaga decided to take the ball and run with it, no pun intended. She told the magazine, "We all know that one of the biggest talking points of the year was that I have a d--k, so why not give them what they want? I want to wear a d--k strapped to my vagina. ... This is not out of nowhere, right? I want to comment on that in a beautiful, artistic way. How I wanna show it. And I want to call this piece 'Lady Gaga Dies Hard.'”

And this is why we love us some Gaga. When people attacked her with disparaging remarks about her gender, she simply reappropriated them — along with a visual aid — and threw it back in their faces to demonstrate the absurdity of those remarks.

She then uses the rampant gossip as to whether she has male genitalia as an example of how the public perceives gender stereotypes:

If a guy says, "Oh I f----ed all these chicks this week," there’s a high-five and giggling. But when a woman does that and it's publicized or she is open about her sexuality or she’s free or liberated, it’s, "Oh, well, she must have a d--k."

Justice, Gaga style, has been served.

Gotta love it!

I love the subtle (or maybe not subtle) intersection of gender politics and pop culture. It gives me a lot to think about when digesting the image of Lady Gaga donning a strap-on. It is so symbolic that to have a penis there is power and penetration. Granted she wore it due the rumors of her sex being questioned, it is symbolic for me (I’m projecting) that as her rise to fame and power/influence of a audio landscape of irregular beats, costume, her aesthetic and her sensibilities of being eccentric. What I love about this image is that she saying “so the fuck what!” that if she had a penis she would still be fabulous, she would still be a whole person not “half-man, half-woman.” Saying a woman is some how “too masculine” is a silencing tactic to degrade assertive women. It makes some women revert to stereotypical habits of what a heteronormative society deems as feminine (silent, submissive, etc.). The ploy of reversing genitalia to a person of (perceived) gender/sex to dehumanize is nothing new but the ways to do it are becoming more covert and coded. I like the fact that Lady Gaga takes in on (literally) to show there is no shame; she puts it out there for all who look closely to see. This picture and what she has done made a lot of statements on gender, transgender and sex. Gender is (hopefully) going under a period of (de)construction, in this I hope people are free to do whatever the hell they want.

Oh so true and very well

Oh so true and very well said.  It's about time that mainstream media addressed the issue of gender and its presumptions.  However, while some may interpret Gaga's gesture as one of defiance, it is also one that reaffirms stereotypes of power; namely, a chick with power is a chick with a dick.  I personally view gender itself as a problematic concept because at the same time that it classifies, it stratifies.  It is never neutral, that is, objectively bifurcating people into respective categories of male and female, without further judgements about their place in society.  It would be interesting to live in a post-gender world however.  So many people are attached to the concept (as oppressive as it is) in much the same way that they're attached to their sexuality and race that I think its deconstruction would be met with a lot of opposition.  Without gender there is no sexuality and therefore no lesbians, in the strict sense of the word.  Now how interesting would that be for a community like AE?
Soulslayer's picture

Sex and gender are two

Sex and gender are two different things though. So there would still be the biological sex, which is what sexual orientation is "measured" on. There could still be communities built upon s.o., but the mental male/female dichotomy and limitations on gender expression wouldn't exist anymore.
Squaircle's picture

That's a tempting

That's a tempting conclusion, but it's important to remember that as things stand, gender is mapped onto biological sex, although the two can be separated.  That is why being a "woman" runs much deeper than biological morphology, it is also indicative of gender expression.  A test of this fact would be transgendered individuals.  To change your morphological sex does not necessarily lead to a change in your gender expression and vice versa. So you can have a woman who identifies as lesbian in a partnership with an FTM trans individual.  And such labels can be legitimized be the claim that she is attracted to the gender of her partner, which is completely legit.  The case of intersex takes the case even further, namely you can have someone expressing the gender or either male or female, but in truth being neither, in the strict sense of the word.  But we would not commonly deny this person their chosen gender expression just because it does not match their sex organs. In fact, when I look for a woman, the her sexual morphology is not the only significant factor, there's also the gender component.  It is only because gender and sex are so closely linked in today's society that we tend to believe that physical morphology is what determines a lesbian.  But sexual organs, in and of itself has little social significance.  It is the role that we assign to it through gender that isolates it as a significant classifying category in society, unlike that of being right-handed or blue eyed.  And a deconstruction of gender and allowance for diversity in expression in both men and women would invariably affect our definition of sexuality and the validity of such concepts in the first place

And remember that sexual organs is not what you see when you become attracted to a woman.  You see her gender.  You see the way she dresses, the way she carries herself, hair, make up, body shape,etc... These are all expressions of gender, not sex.  So it would also be possible that with a deconstruction of gender, many more males and female would converge on their physical appearances too, although not all.  So it would also be possible that the person you are looking at when you think you are being attracted by a woman, is not a woman at all, but a person of some other gender expression, or as we call it in our two gender society, a "genderqueer".

Lady GaGa is beyond amazing!  She's brilliant.  Her head is planted firmly on her beautiful shoulders (and great body).

I became a big fan when I heard her speak in an interview. She's focused, smart and there's great talent behind all her glitter. She's not some fluke...she's real and wildly interesting and she's here to stay.

This Lady has balls and is not afraid of anyone.

I find her fascinating! And, the best part is, she loves her fans!

Damn, I never cared about any celebrity. I mean, I love me some Johnny Depp and I want to get in Yvonne Strahovski's pants, sure, but Lady Gaga?

I want the f***ing world to carry her to Heaven, give her name to a star, hell!, give her a f***ing constellation.

Lady Gaga is the best thing that has happened to a worn-out, sick and repetitive industry. To a sick world, actually.

If I could save you the pain, I would, GodGa.

Go Gaga

What's funny to me is that the whole fashion industry, the magazines, the pop-music industry, all those people that are usually so quick to make fun of everyone who's even a little different, all of them are lapping up everything Lady Gaga does. But by the time they've caught on and everyone starts doing it, she's already doing something totally new which makes them all gasp in awe again.

She is brilliant. I absolutely love her.
