Ilene Chaiken won't give us what we wantWe were skeptical at first when Mama Chaiken revealed that the final season of The L Word would morph from a trashy lesbian soap opera with incoherent plotlines into a trashy lesbian murder mystery with incoherent plotlines. Initially, we clenched our fists in defiance and resisted, but eventually we accepted it. (Did we have a choice?) After all, there is a rumor going around that 2009 is the "year of change." And change is a good thing, right?
So as you already know, Jenny is sleeping with the fishes. A few viewers managed to warm up to Jenny's character in the last season, and they wait with bated breath to see who did the dastardly deed. Most viewers, however, fell to their knees in relief and thanked Lilith for doing away with the terminally psychotic Jenny. "Ding dong! The witch is dead!" they sang in glee. These viewers patiently tune in every week and endure unfortunate developments such as Max's new Unabomber-inspired look in order to discover the identity of the good doctor who lanced the festering boil on premium cable known as Jenny Schecter. The two camps may disagree on how they feel about Jenny, but they can agree on one thing: They want to know who killed her. That is, after all, the point of this season. Or not. As our good friend Suze Orman says:
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times reported that Mama Chaiken will leave us all in the dark about the identity of the killer:
Come on, Ilene. Don't you know that President Obama signed an executive order to outlaw torture? We gave you the benefit of the doubt and sat through Jenny's intolerable carnival montages. We twitched uncomfortably in our seats as we watched her meltdown leading to her stint stripping as "Miss Yeshiva Girl." We continued watching even after the unforgivable Sounder storyline. We suspended our disbelief when we witnessed the perpetually disheveled and bewildered Shane bag hottie after hottie after hottie, and then Jenny. Yes, lesbians are used to eating bitterness, but couldn't you have just thrown us a bone? Uh-oh — I think I'm hearing En Vogue again.
But I suppose you know that no matter what abominations you throw our way, we just can't quit you. Damn you, Ilene. Damn you. We'll be back next Sunday, as usual. Le sigh. |

you've got to be kidding me
no resolution, but alice in jail for The Farm? Is Ilene on crack? Is she trying to alienate every loyal viewer? This is just depressing. I want Season 5 Jenny back - more adorable glasses, more hot (fun, and HAPPY) scenes with Kate French, more hilarious antics!! Oh, and while we're working miracles, how about a good plot line for Helena, too? And um, bring back Carmen. Seriously.

dastardly
I'm kind of just at a loss..
I think she's confident in
haha
thats true. :P..
Well..
I don't know about everyone else, but I certainly watch the show for more than just Jenny....So I'm sticking around.
denial
I think I refuse to believe she'll actually do this to us. Didn't she say that the last couple episodes would feature viewer input?
And gawd, after last night I'm guessing that *anything* goes in this the final season. I get the distinct impression that we're in for a wild ride...!!
Chaiken is a hack (and I
Chaiken is a hack (and I use the term lightly, I'd use stronger words, but I'm biting my tongue) -- all she wants is a big payday for a big screen movie. Sorry IC, but last I looked, tLW would never been, never has been, SatC. -- It is a poor man's QaF, with lackluster storylines, the worst continuity on screen, stunt casting for the sake of stunt casting. Why the stellar Leisha Hailey was thinking when she said ''yes'' to doing your next show, confuses me. Good Luck, IC, you certainly won't be getting my hard earned dollar. Or my support.

"Ilene Chaiken won't give
"Ilene Chaiken won't give us what we want"
I find this especially interesting because last Spring Ilene and Showtime made such a huge deal out of asking for input from the fans about how they wanted the season to play out.
What the heck happened?? I actually feel really bad for the L-word folk because the show has become such a disaster.
If it gets better in the next few episodes i'll eat my words, but I honestly don't know how anything can be salvaged from this train wreck.
hate.
damn you, Ilene.
I curse you, vehemently.

Great reference!
And, why does Ilene hate us? Why?!
I will always love Jenny. At the very least, she deserves justice. This whole story is probably bull anyway. Jenny probably killed herself or it was an accident and blah, blah, blah.
I heart Leisha but, I really hope The Farm doesn't get picked up. Ilene doesn't deserve it.

bit of a spoiler...
I agree!
And the Crazy Train rolls on...
IC just continues to baffle me... What other show has the creator in the promos? I assumed it was to showcase the real lesbian behind the Lesbian Show. I'm sure her enormous ego played a role too.
What disturbs me is that some of the total freakishness of the show can be put down to the desire to entertain enough people to keep this "groundbreaking drama" on the air - but isn't she supposed to be all about doing it for the visiblity of all the lesbians out there in the world? That's the line we've been given to swallow on a regular basis. The Little Lesbian Show that could...
Meanwhile its the actors - of whom many are straight - were the ones fighting to keep this ever crazier gay show from flying off the rails. Just listen to some of the actors commentaries and interviews and its obvious that most of the time the cast is asking the same questions as the audience... WTF????!!!!!
If IC is all about making a statement to the world with the L Word I am struggling to figure out what it is. She has got to be kidding that there is no resolution. No wonder there was a few wry remarks coming from the likes of J Beals about how they wrapped it up - or didn't. After putting the cast and crew through 6 years of fighting to make this acid trip believeble and "real" they didn't even give them the resolution of a wrap party... that had to come in part from the fans at a convention halfway around the world.
My L Word is Lost... but wait they did that show already.
SPECIAL NOTE: viewers of the show should begin the new season drinking game now (instead of Kit's GIRRRL) try one with a double shot everytime someone says "you're dead meat, Jenny Schecter... just dead meat". I foresee many a drunken evening in our futures being that there are only 6 shows left and alot more characters to piss off.

TOTALLY lol...they have said
We need more lesbian shows
If only we had more lesbian TV shows, we wouldn't have to watch this one...
I wonder if I made the only lesbian TV show around if I'd be this arrogant too.

As disappointing as it is,
seriously?
Wow. That is so annoying! Come on, Ilene!! Grrrrrrrrrrrr
When words leave off, music begins. ~Heinrich Heine
I'm not surprised that they
I'm not surprised that they won't reveal who the killer is, but I'm very surprised that Ilene chooses to say this not even half way into the season. She's spoiling her own show! That's just dumb. And an L word movie? How the hell is that supposed to work if they're doing the spin off??
Well, I don't know why I expected logic from Ilene. So, leave out the ending just so you can get a movie deal? That's fucked.
In other words, there is no murderer
In other words, there is no murderer. All we've got is one dead character and a sure-fire way to focus all of the attention on the least deserving person - Ilene.
This, as with the last 3 series have confirmed, for me, that 'The L Word' really has nothing to do with anyone but the actors. They're the ones who carried the show and made it watchable despite a plethora of horrendous creative decisions, some particularly average writing and the rampant ego of its creator. They deserved better.Mama Chaiken's been smokin'
Mama Chaiken's been smokin' somn fierce...
Seriously, whatEVER. At this point I'm just in for the crazyass ride and don't really expect anything spectacular, just a lot of crazy. And hopefully no carny people :P
Hypocrites
I love how everyone got so mad at being given too much information about Season 6 and now everyone is all pissed at not getting enough information.
I've come to the conclusion that it's IMPOSSIBLE to please the readers here when it comes to the L Word. I think I'm actually one of the few people here who love the show, has always loved the show, and still loves the show.
In some of the comments people are talking about Chaiken holding out for a movie deal. Why wouldn't lesbians support a possibility of a main stream lesbian movie? All people ever do here is bitch about lesbians not being represented enough. Well, the second the inclination of a rumor of a possible lesbian movie by Chaiken is uttered and how do people react? Everyone dumps on it! What a bunch of hypocrites!
Sometimes I think I missed the "You have to hate Ilene Chaiken" memo. Is there something wretched this woman did to someone and I don't know about it? I am so confused as to why she is so disliked here. Feel free to fill me in on what I'm supposed to hate because apparently I'm just a clueless fan.
This season is a bit like a
This season is a bit like a friend starting to tell you something and then going "oh, well, um, nevermind," after they got you so invested in the story. Of course it's Chaiken's choice but for most viewers this is an issue.
I'm glad you enjoy the show so much, but many viewers just hate the twists and I think that's permitted. It sucks when your favorite character dies or has random personality lapses. This stuff happens in most shows but it is a bigger issues for most AE readers as this show is a commonality for many of us and one of the only current representations of lesbians on TV.
Also, I don't quite think it's hypocritial for people to bemoan the lack of lesbian representation and then not trust someone who wants to provide some if they don't trust their past work. I am with you though in being a fan and enjoying much of The L Word's soaptasticness, but I think that it makes sense that people get so riled up.
chill pill
I think we all need to take a chill pill too :)
I happen to like the show. As previously stated, I think the problem lies in the lack of representation, but the key is to remember that the show is NOT REAL LIFE. I think a lot of people expect it to represent their real life, but one show cannot represent EVERYONE or EVERY story. This show happens to be about one small group and never guaranteed to play out in a certain way. Sure it may be a little crazy, but I find it entertaining. Hey it is more believable than Grey's Anatomy.
Tell Denny's ghost to save me a seat on the crazy train!
The extent to which I hate this woman
I don't think there has ever been a T.V. show that has ever pissed me off so much. How the hell can she not tell us who fing killed Jenny? Jesus Christ. I think she loves screwing us over. How the f does she not feel compelled to tell us? Yes the show is about the fing characters, so if our beloved characters get killed, I think the only nice thing she could do is at least fing tell us who killed them!
Its not impossible to please the viewers. In fact it is quite simple. Okay she gave us more information than we wanted in the beginning, but then the whole promotion for the 6th season is : Oooo someone is getting killed. Even on fing Showtime there is a poll asking us who we think the killer is. Wouldn't it just be the obvious conclusion the they will reveal to us who the killer is?
I hate her. I really do. I don't care if she gave us this show, she may have given it to us, but she certainly ruined the possibility of what it could have been. I'm so mad.
Seeking a satisfying ending
I seldom bad-mouth other writers, but she is really, really bad. The least she can do is give us a satisfying ending.

All right I am actually one
Wow...what is the point of a
"The show is about
"The show is about character and relationships, and I used this story to deeply explore those relationships."
That is a vile and odious lie. Ilene Chaiken does absolutely no such thing, unless by "deeply explore" she means "barely establish then frak around with."
At the risk of actually defending Ilene ...
OK so, I've been as frustrated with TLW as anyone else, but I don't understand why everyone is so upset about this.
I for one think it's one of the few good ideas Ms. Chaiken has had regarding the show.
No matter who she would have chosen to be the killer it would have been predictable and blah. Let's face it.
Plus I did NOT want to watch a season of whodunit on TLW because it would have been a trainwreck and horrendously executed. The last time I checked that seemed to be the prevailing notion on here, so what's changed? How come everyone is now crying foul that the L Word won't be a drawn out game of lesbian clue?
I'm no Chaiken fan, but you guys gotta let up on her sometimes. Yikes!
I think the actual anger is about...
Hi!!!
Like you said I don't think many of us want Lesbian Clue on this final season. But if the storyline is already there I think you have to close it, don't you think?
I mean, we know Jenny is already dead (unless this is Dallas??) so someone must have killed her. If you don't have the intention of resolve the mystery why create it in the first place??
Personally, I think this season we have returned to the Twilight Zone again, so I am preparing myself for any eventuality...maybe they all killed Jenny?? (a la Murder At The Orient Express??)
Here's a Thought
You know what I think, That in some crazy way jenny Isn't really dead. For all you know with jenny being in the whole movie business with tina, their just making another movie and it just so happens that all of them are in it as actors. cause the movie lez girls got stolen from them so they decided to do one on their own and did some whole sha-bam of a movie and IC is just showing the part of a movie as the ending when really. in the end they live happily ever after. the end!! but think about really?.. you think that could happen. and all IC is doing is just making you sit threw all of it ?
and another the part .. the spin off. they probly thought "alice was soo good at acting, insted of being on the view or w/e she decieds to be an actress and the whole jail thing is just another movie..
BUT THATS JUST ME GUESSING.
ps. i suck at spelling
I'm leaning towards that idea
too that Jenny isn't dead at all. Why would they bring a wet, dead uncovered body thru someone's livingroom when the death happened outside in a swimming pool.
they would have examined and worked on the body outside and pronounced her at the poolside, put her in a body bag and taken her thru the gate to the awaiting ME truck or ambulance. There's noway they would bring a dead body thru the house like that and everyone sitting around like "who done it". I think maybe, just maybe, Jenny is not dead at all, but I guess only time will tell...
Mucho Clever
This is likely a clever marketing plot to get viewers to watch the spin-off. Promises might be made as to finding out the identity of the killer in The Farm, rather than on a show that is breathing its last, final gasps.

I agree with you completely
I think that Ilene has already pushed aside the L Word and her main focus is getting the viewers to transition over to The Farm. She doesn't have to make any scheme for me, because although I greatly dislike Chaiken (and her ideas of the jail setting. I mean wtf?), I am in love with Leisha. She doesn't really care how TLW is sent off, she just cares on making the next show successful. I don't think that gives her the right though.
I think that proves her to be a lazy writer (or its just more proof of her being a lazy writer). She could do both if she tried, and brought forth a little creativity. She could make the show end correctly, with the true L Word fans satisfied, giving us the idea that hey, maybe the farm wont be so bad to look into. I think that we, as fans of TLW, have a right to be critical of her work, and we are in no way hypocritical of being angry at her for the crappy writing she has provided.
I guess this is the first
I guess this is the first thing I happen to agree since casting Rachel Shelley. Whatever the reason is that they chose to go this route, I can't yet judge since we haven't seen the whole season yet. But I seriously hope and am now glad that they won't tell us who did it. Cause really, if it were someone from the core group or supporting cast, it would totally ruin the whole thing. I wouldn't want to watch reruns and think "OMG how can X kill Jenny?" or "Y, would you just kill her already!!".
But I was hoping to see some forward/rewind shots/scenes ala Damages, but guess that was too much to ask for. Lucy!
Come on Ilene . . .
I imagine this getssung a lot around the L Word set:
These people around here wear beaten-down eyes
Sunk in smoke-dried faces
They're so resigned to what their fate is
But not us, no, not us
We are far too young and clever . . .
Am I glad I stopped watching this show long ago...
Boy, am I glad I stopped watching TLW long ago at the end of season two. Especially after hearing about Dana and various other comments. I'm just passing the show by for five minutes to see Lucy Lawless as a cop - other than that, I wonder wtf Ilene has been doing to what once was a great show.
My opinion....
I know we're all mad at IC, me included. She's made some crappy moves and obviously loves to see us squirm, but... can we move on?
Honestly...its been filmed, its currently airing and there isn't anything we can do.
I know I could just not read these, but when I see the L Word..I click on it, and lately I've been pretty dissapointed with the posts. :/
Well I guess it's fitting
What. the. heck are you guys complaining about
First of all Shane and Jenny?! Seriously? Carmen was written out and the best they can do is Jenny?? Smh
Second at the risk of ppl rolling their eyes at me or running their hands over their faces in disbelief, what. the. heck. are you guys complaining about? You should know by now that there is a 90% chance of your fave show not going the way you hoped. Writers, like IC, don’t think about how we are going to respond to their story, they just want the opportunity to tell it (relatively speaking, since the studio has the final say, which, come to think of, it is probably what happened here, hmmm, let’s give IC the benefit of the doubt before bashing her huh. I mean isn’t Tina having that problem?). In a world where mainstream television writes about a gay character only to have them written out or have barely a storyline or no gay character at all shouldn’t we give IC a break and appreciate that we do have a show to look at.
Don’t get me wrong I totally agree with some of you that tLW could have a taken a different road however since the most I have written is a page and not hundreds of pages for the past 6 yrs I won’t be to quick to point out the faults in the show, for I am truly pleased that IC wrote it and that Showtime accepted it, because it could have easily ended up nowhere. For it is MY opinion that tLW is one of the best shows on tv. You see I’m a gay girl living in a straight world (where we can’t be open for fear of being ‘ bashed’) and quite frankly getting f*cking tired of it. So whatever ‘gayness” comes my way good or bad I appreciate it because from where I’m sitting there isn’t a gay show or even a gay movie that has the caliber which is that of tLW, for this is only the beginning of ‘gay tv’ it’s only going to get a lot better from here and I for one can’t wait and hope it doesn’t take another lifetime to do so.
Round we go
After the last five seasons, not revealing the murderer is pretty much what I would expect.
I'm not sure iif this is just a case of an ego going unchecked, but it seems like a slap in the face of fans who just wanted a show to call our own. TLW starts in Canada tomorrow night; I'm debating whether I'll tune in or just keep updated on the show with the recaps here.
Maybe the spin-off, if it gets picked up, will learn from TLW mistakes.
"That which you believe becomes your world."
LOL! I love it. This is the
EZ Girl
While that damned theme song and echoing (thank God they got rid of that) annoys me to no end, I will admit that hiring a decent scorer is one thing that Chaiken did right. Often, the musical choices for the show have supplemented scenes that would've been considered mediocre otherwise, completely saving the show from its bad writing.
Example: 6.02. El Perro Del Mar's "From the Valley to the Stars" totally saved the final scene from being a bigger WTF than it already was.
Too bad BETTY had to use the show as a publicity platform in the second and third season. That kinda ruined it.

fantastic article
this must have been one of the best written installments i have ever read on after ellen, and there are lots of them around here as everybody knows. some passages reminded me of some of alison bechdel's loveliest lines in her dykes to watch out for.
as to solving the mystery or not -- when have i stopped caring? argh.
