"Heroes" debuts Claire's lesbian love interest at Comic-ConIn a case of life imitating art, reports of the Heroes lesbian storyline have shifted and morphed more times than Sylar. Initially it was announced that Rachel Melvin of Days of Our Lives would play Claire's love interest in Season 4, but over the weekend, it was revealed that Madeline Zima would play Gretchen, Claire's college roommate and fling. Zima's last role was Mia Cross, the jailbait vixen who seduces David Duchovny's character Hank Moody in Californication.
An extended Season 4 teaser trailer debuted at Comic-Con this past weekend, and although it hasn't been released as of the time of publication of this post, here is an amateur video of the trailer. (Want to see the Claire/Gretchen kissing scene? Don't blink at 4:47.) OK, you were probably distracted by Ali Larter's naked shoulders and back right before the kiss, so I made a screenshot.
Hooking up with your roommate isn't the brightest of moves, but then again, neither is attempting to hijack a plane to save your buddies. Are you looking forward to Claire's storyline this season, or are you even more psyched that Ali Larter's character Tracy Strauss survived Denko's attack and will return to kill a lot of people while wearing very little? |

Wow...
Wow... I'd never thought I'd be looking forward to Heroes

I don't have much faith
that this will be anything more than fanboy titillation. They're not going to give her a real relationship, c'mon! It'll probably be saved up for sweeps week or some nonsense.
This is not so much a slam on Heroes as it is on broadcast TV.
I agree...
...this looks more like a ratings grabbing scheme than a real story line where Claire can explore her sexuality and such. I wonder how long before this 'love interest' either dies, or all of a sudden Claire realizes that oh, she's straight after all, and it was just a short moment of confusion.
"Come fly away with me, right in the land of eternity"
Word. It's clearly gonna
Word.
It's clearly gonna be all fanservicey. There's no way they'd make a char like Claire on a show like Heroes gay or bi with a proper storyline.
NBC fail all.
possibly her roommate has powers?
You know in Elektra the person who kisses people then they die...what if her roommate is like that and they're just playing the kiss off as a real kiss for ratings?
I'm putting my money on that scenario.
Dang it...now I have to watch Heroes AGAIN
4:48 mark
I love how the girls in the
I love how the girls in the audience screamed and went ''Woo!'' when they saw the kiss! XD
I haven't watched Heroes since the beginning of season 2 so I'm not even sure what the hell is going on anymore but I'm pretty sure this 'lesbian love interest' of Claire's is going to be just for ratings and the straight male audience. I will admit though, I'll probably end up watching it just to see what happens between the two girls.
:)
agreed!
i am so with you on this one. hayden is so attractive that i am willing to at least scroll through the heroes episodes when they are posted online and just stop at her scenes
damn it...
im gonna have to catch up on Heroes to know what the hell is going on..lol
BTW love how excited the comic-con peeps get!
Definitely...
...a ratings grabbing scene. A quote from a Comic Con panel:
"Though they share a kiss, Madeline Zima and Hayden Panettiere's characters won't have a lesbian relationship according to show creator Tim Kring."
This won't be enough to save Heroes from the cesspool into which it has sank. Oh well, I will watch it anyway!
That shut me up
awesome
i don't care whos playing gretchen as long as these two have a real relationship cause lord knows claire hasn't had luck with men
Madeline Zima
She will always be Gracie Sheffield to me from The Nanny
back even further
To me she will always be the little girl from "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle"
OMFG
I can't wait! This is gonna be so hot...oh, be still my heart!
"Hooking up with your roommate isn't the brightest of moves, but then again, neither is attempting to hijack a plane to save your buddies." - Hilarious!
NO.
I'm dismayed by this development.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Lost in Translation
Referring to this --- "Though they share a kiss, Madeline Zima and Hayden Panettiere's characters won't have a lesbian relationship according to show creator Tim Kring."
Kring did not say that. Instead he made an ambiguous statement that could have been just as much about the kiss not being about titillation. I recommend watching the panel because before I figured it was exploitation. After I wasn't so sure and it seemed if he was downplaying so the full situation would be unknown.
Its all for ratings such a
I say we ignore the idea
Yeah exactly, Heroes has
Yeah exactly, Heroes has never been relationship-driven, one ends up dying or killing the other, etc. :P
Too Late
This is way too late to be anything decent. The writing on Heroes has gone from bad to worse since season 2. The fact that Syler is still around is proof that this season will be just as terrible as the others.
If they really wanted to do a lesbian story with Claire (which they've been toying with since forever) they missed their chance at Claire/Elle which is honesty the only pairing I saw that would have the slightest potential just because Hayden has amazing chemistry with Kristen.
Leave it to Heroes to be the master of hindsight. Everything post season 1 has been them trying to fix things and just making it worse in the process. Bleh.
where's the "Like" button?
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Hot, but....
when i heard about this story i tried to start watching season 2.... i couldn't, i just can't do it!
i'll watch this season even if i don't know what the heck is going on....
oh, and the bunch of girls in the audience made me laugh, for a second it seemed they didn't know what to say (or scream lol) and then they went like WOOW! hahaha
A thought
The plotline has not been played out yet. The decision around whether the plotline is sheer exploitation or well done should wait until then. Granted this is not the same complaining as television forums -- where the comments barely disguise homophobia with their comments about why this type of plot will suck. I've been around a long time. I've seen each major show with a lesbian relationship called pandering, exploitative, an attempt at getting bigger ratings, obviously done for men, etc. by those boards. Many viewers -- particularly superhero shows -- just have an agenda - a disgust at same sex relationships between women hidden in any manner they can pull over someone gullible's eyes. They ask for diversity but if a woman thinks of a romance with a woman - it is pandering. Our worries are different. It is about not being transitory or gimmicky because we want fair represenation. It is about ourselves not being exploited. Therefore our agenda cannot be preconcieved. Our processes have to be based on the end result.
We will not know until it is done. Plenty of smart, well written shows have depicted crass, horrid representations of lesbianism and bisexuality. Plenty of crappy or lesser shows -- Fastlane and Starved come to mind -- have given sharp, respectful representations of lesbianim and bisexuality. We do not know where Heroes will go. Right now, they are downplaying it's seriousness. It is not the first show to do that. Right now it is promoting a kiss -- shows that ended up showing respect did that -- publicity departments don't offer up what the end result will be.
So let's just wait. We can attack the representation if it is transitory or fails. For now, we do not know. Instead we are allowing ourselves to be as close minded as many on these television forums. If one thinks that most of those fans whining are really concerned about lesbian representation not being well done -- that is almost certainly mistaken. We are. So lets see how it is done before we dismiss it.
by this logic...
...i can wet my hand and touch an electrical socket because even though it's been scientifically established that it'll shock me, I haven't seen it yet, therefore, I ought to do it and see what happens. xP
I respectfully disagree with your assertion... this is a desperate ploy for the creators to get some ratings boosted. Why not Hiro and Ando finally realizing they're more than just friends? Heck, they've been friends long enough, and Hiro totally strikes me as a bottom (next to big butchy Ando... or hell, Hiro and Peter! That'd be cute!).
...but Nooooo... they choose the hot AND young (ugh, I already got a bad taste in my mouth) Hayden.
Btw, after watching "A Bug's Life," I can't even begin to fathom how people can find Hayden hot. Dood, it's friggin' DOT!!!
...sorry, off-tangent. My point: this "twist" has "exploitation" and "sweeps" written all over it. They might as well have presented this at C-C as a "girls gone wild" ad.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
I agree with
Ediana on this one. All we've seen so far is a few clips. We have no background knowledge to base our decision on. I personally did not get a girls-gone-wild vibe at all. In terms of who they chose to be gay/ experiment, isn't Milo V. hot and young too? So, they had other options, perhaps options you think would have been better. Maybe Hiro and Ando are really just friends. The point is, I don't see this as malicious plot device in any way, but merely a choice made by the writers to bring something new to Claire's character.
There is no harm in being open-minded, and it's certainly not comparable to electrocuting yourself. We can't "scientifically" establish that this is a sweeps exploitation any more than we can establish that it's not. Perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to judge.
Milo V is
32, and by Hollywood standards, "ripe." :P
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
True, haha. I didn't look
oh Claire.
I've watched Hero's from the beginning, Claire started to get on my nerves towards the end, maybe now she'll get back on my good side. ;]
Look, I don't care if this
[NBC Execs] "We gotta viewer
[NBC Execs] "We gotta viewer signed up! It worked! Now multiply that by 1,000,000,000,000,000! Baaaaaaank!"
xD
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
I've been watching Heroes
then your comment is
then your comment is misleading.
*hmpf*
xD
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
how so? I don't care if
how so? I don't care if it's a random hookup, I just want to see Claire kiss a girl because I find her hot - so that is shallow on my part.
Besides it's not like they're advertising this on TV, heeey Lesbian kissing on Heroes in S4. The only place I've heard this is here on AE, so if anything, AE is also responsible for their lil 'scheme' at teh ratings omg
blub
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
No!
NO! It was supposed to be ELLE and CLAIRE! not whoever and claire!! whatever .. i stopped watching it when elle died
i stopped watching heroes
Comparison does not work
QU33R,
That is not cogent reasoning. It sure has nothing to do with logic. Comparing what one's opinion of a work in an artistic medium will* be to a factual consequence from a physical action is weak to say the least. I would think you would realize that the comparison is not apt when you state "scientifically established" for the physical action you describe.
As for why not the others, considering Claire's storyline always has been constructed around a young person discovering and then hiding their identity, it would be the best one to go with. The combination of Claire going to college while trying to hide who she is combined with a plotline of one discovering their sexual identity practically writes itself. It sounds like you are making an argument based on those who love male/male slash. I think that kind of argument, which is not based in what would make the most sense in terms of subtext becoming text, is one founded in a disdain for female/female sexuality. Now I doubt you feel that or whoever you have conversed with at Heroes fan boards would come out and say that. However what other argument could a want for male/male and not for female/female come from when the female/female in this specific case makes far, far more sense in terms of adding to the themes of the show while still being grounded in believability (and a 19 year old girl who has only dated boys coming to terms with sexual feelings for women in college does happen quite a bit).
Maybe you will be right. Maybe it will be exploitation. The thing is you cannot know until it plays it out. I think you may be in for a surprise. I could be wrong. We will see.
*That "will" should be a "may" as it should always be when one has not experienced something in an artistic medium. To truly be able to judge a film, tv show, painting, etc. you have to experience it. It doesn't mean we can't say something looks like it will be junk and skip it because of it. It just means that ultimately our opinion on the media is uninformed (no matter what consensus is reached).
lol
deal.
:)
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
You should write for AE.
want to try it
So between this and the
Apparently

Don't matter
Don't matter if it's a full blown relationship or not. Just thought it was hawt. Just something for the fanfic universe... ;)
