Dr. Phil attempts to recruit "fake bisexual" teensAfterEllen.com reader Emily M. tipped us off to a casting call for an upcoming show on Dr. Phil: "Teen Pretending To Be Bisexual?": Is your teenager rebelling by pretending to be bisexual? Has your teen pretended to be bisexual because he/she thinks it's cool? Or has your teenage daughter pretended to be bisexual to attract boys?
I know I am going to sound like an old bat, but after reading some of the other upcoming show topics for Dr. Phil, I find myself hankering for the old days, when teenagers used to rebel by sneaking out to smoke cigarettes and drink beer.
Take, for example, "Teen Getting Drunk from Hand Sanitizer?" Kids are wasting the first line of protection against the hamthrax by drinking the nation's supply of hand sanitizer? This activity must be stopped. After all, this is humanity's gravest hour. We should be guarding our supplies of Purell with assault rifles to protect us from the marauding sickly pigs, for crying out loud! But seriously — what ever happened to paying someone over 21 to buy alcohol? Then there's this: "Is Your Teen Using Deodorant to Start Fires?" Wow, in my day we just sort of struck matches and lit stuff on fire. Now, deodorant. Why didn't I think of that? Lighter fluid just seemed more obvious. (All right, kids. Don't play with matches or deodorant, mmmkay? Remember, arson is a crime.)
Finally, there is this topic: "Is Your Teen Snorting Smarties?" Listen, I got nothin'. So perhaps fake bisexual teens isn't the most outlandish parenting-related topic on this program, but really, what is the litmus test to determine whether a teen is pretending to be bisexual or is simply figuring out his or her sexuality? Perhaps he or she has already figured out his or her sexuality and is simply expressing it. Behaving outside of what society considers the norm may be perceived as an act of rebellion by (some) parents, and I can see some parents filling out that casting form in an effort to de-queer their teenaged children. What do you think of the upcoming show on bisexuality? |

Not promising
I think it's a pile of crock and probably going to end badly for any kids involved.
When a teen comes out as bi, at least where I am, they don't attract good attention or look cool. Everyone just raises their eyebrows and goes "Humph, some desperado trying to attract attention. They should just shut up and not reveal how confused they are."
It's because of these kinds of stereotypes about bis that I tried to convince myself, first that I was 100% straight, and then that I was 100% gay. Neither have made me happy.
People in my school snort
People in my school snort Smarties all the time. Usually its in our science class, the teacher never pays attention.
I never knew these Dr. (cough cough) Phil topics were so out there.

I can understand the
I can understand the snorting Smarties thing, but the deodorant? Like Grace said, matches do the trick just fine.
And Dr. Phil is just out to make parents paranoid and teenagers miserable. He really tears into some kids who don't deserve the public humiliation :/
Oh wow
Oh that's great...
Give parents an excuse to shrug off their kids’ sexualities by telling them it’s all a popularity stunt. Ahhhh progression! Thanks D-Bag Phil. On another note, the girl on the left is cute, she sort of looks like Zoey Deschanel…. And now I’m a letch ‘cause she’s a teeny bopper. Awesome.
She is cute :) And older
She is cute :)
And older than me, so yay; I'm not a letch
Believe it or not, I know
Believe it or not, I know people who were 'bisexual' to seem cool. They've snapped out of it now though. It was pretty ridiculous but I just thought I'd tell you it does happen. ha!
Go here for my view on all things lesbian: http://allthingslesbeau.blogspot.com
I remember them...
I've seen it too. In high school mostly, there were people who talked loudly about being bi but only ever dated the opposite sex.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, at least not on the level of drinking hand sanitizer.
Dr. Phil is a dumbass!
His show is lame, he is lame and hopefully Oprah is kicking herself for ever introducing him to the world!

Sorry for the gravity...
oh
.
I thought it was going to be about the barsexual chicks
Eww
Dr. Phil can be so tasteless.
I don't know about everyone else, but how many gay people do you know who were "bi" at some time? Sure, a lot of people identify as bisexual, but I think for many of us it was a transition. How fucking confusing would it be to be both going through this confusing time and then having your parents drag you on to national television to has it out some more? With a fakey like Dr. Phil??
On top of this, I have met a lot of conservative parents who strongly thought their sons or daughters were going through a "bisexual phase" that would, in time, phase out. And who watches Dr. Phil? I think a few mothers and fathers do. In fact, I'd say MANY mothers and fathers do.
Thanks for fueling that fire, Dr. Phil.
As if the "gay issue" is not being exploited enough on tv these days.
What A Joke.......
"Teen Pretending To Be Bisexual?"
"Teen Getting Drunk from Hand Sanitizer?"
"Is Your Teen Using Deodorant to Start Fires?"
"Is Your Teen Snorting Smarties?"
LOL! (I am dying laughing!) Are these really the upcoming topics for Dr.Phil's show?.... LOL! I was going to say an unpleasant remark about Dr. Phil, but these show topics are embarassing enough for him....What a joke he is! (I tried to refrain)

So are you trying to act
quacker phil
what about a show about teen girls who flaunt their sexuality just to get attention from boys? because that's all these girls are really doing...no different than teen virgins dressing "sexy" and acting dumb in order to get boys' attention.
it's not the "bisexuality" that's the issue but the attention-seeking part; seeking attention based on your idea of yourself as nothing but a sex object.
marketing opportunity
Smarties?!
Are we talking about the candy-coated chocolate that they sell here in Canada or are Smarties something different in the U.S. because I am thoroughly confused. Why would anyone want to snort chocolate?
On the topic of faking bisexuality and Dr. Phil trying to sort these kids out: it all seems a little too But I'm a Cheerleader for me. Just sayin'.
US smarties are Rockets here
Haha. Rockets makes so
wouldn't have been nice to
I was so thinkng chocolate
LMAO WOW. Okay so my good
LMAO WOW. Okay so my good old Catholic high school can account for the last two.
Examples:
1. A guy got suspended for using an Axe deo as a fire torch in the guys gym change room which resulted in a fire alarm and forcing us into the winter cold and snow. They later forced him to apologize to the student body via morning announcements.
2. In religion class, two guys decided to crush rockets (candies) and sniffed the powered right there in class. [okay so I wikipedia'd it and in the States you guys call them smarties.... Smarties, by Nestle, in Canada are something else.]
I find that Dr. Phil has just lost ideas for topics to talk about. Kids are kids, if they act out, they'll act out. It's part of growing up and learning. I mean I once brought vodka in a water bottle to school and I turned out just fine. lol. Okay, fine I've gone to couple of classes (in university) kinda drunk/tipsy after a stop at the campus pub, but at that point you know you're responsible for your actions.
so stupid
Fantastic
Just what we need... more media support for the idea that straight is "normal" and "moral" and same-sex attraction is "acting out." Thank you Dr. Phil. What would we do without you?
I mean, I've seen girls do this before, but it's not the end of the world. No reason to give the rest of us a bad name by attempting to "fix it" on television.
My college roommate's friends used to light deodorant on fire. I remember one of them prancing across the room pretending he was holding the Olympic torch. He dropped it on the floor and had to stomp it out and then he didn't do it as often anymore.
Oh, freshman year...
Well, judging from all the
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with exploring your sexuality, but in some cases, youth do see bisexuality as being “cool” and deliberately decide to use the label even though they know they are very straight, and most of the time, they refuse to date (or having anything to do with) the same gender. It’s all talk, no walk. Frankly, I think it’s alarming, because it dives into stereotypes real bisexuals are trying SO HARD to overcome, and it just adds to their struggle.
I have a feeling I am going to be flamed for this post, but I suppose it’s just one of those things you have to experience to really understand?
Like I said, there’s nothing wrong with exploring one’s sexuality, and I’m *definitely not* one of those bisexual-hating lesbians, but when people honestly KNOW who they are and only use a label for attention, all it does is end up hurting those around them. And, because of it, we get things like this: Dr. Phil doing a show about it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with someone exploring the “fake bisexuality” concept, but my main concern is that I know for a fact it won’t be done right. Which, as someone said above, will only perpetuate the dismissal of real gay/bisexual kids out there who are trying to come out but whose parents and friends will ignore as going through a “fad” or “phase.” Or, in the end, delve deeper into the false idea that being gay is a choice, and we can be “cured.”
Just thought I would share my opinion.

agree fully!
I agree with you . I am
I agree with you .
I am 17 an currently in my second last year at high school, and I'm out to almost all of my high school. The amount of times I have seen or had girls pretend to be bisexual just to get guys to notice them (because really how many guys don't look when two girls are kissing?) is way to high.
no flame from me
I agree Bianca it happens all the time, i guess my only concern is that they are asking parents to bring their fake kids on the show, when maybe they aren't fake. It would be relevant if they were simply getting the fake kids to go on and admit they are being fake.
wow i said fake a lot
I second that..
I haven't been in high school for a decade, yet I remember some, but not often girls especially pretending to be bi for attention. I have noticed the trend has increased just by still going to college(I will graduate someday) ...all the freshman kind of echo with the recent high school trends.
This kind of thing is exactly why Bi's get a bad wrap. It would be nice if Dr.
PillPhil could address this issue with integrity. However I am doubting the ability of this Doc-whom by the way was barred from practicing psych by the board and has never had his license reinstated.curious about doc phil a shhhh-it is here http://jonathanturley.org/2008/01/18/dr-phil-charged-with-practicing-without-a-license-in-britney-spears-stunt/
Never been a fan of this
Never been a fan of this guy - think Oprah made a big mistake with that one...but alas and alack.
So he could team up and create a show with O'Reily - "Does your teenager pretend to be bi to join lesbian gangs?"
huh why are people
huh
why are people snorting chocolate? pretty sure ud have to have a HUGE nose to get those things up!
haha i start fires with deo all the time, but then again im a pyro
I don't understand..
Why would anybody "pretend" to be bi-sexual to rebel against his/her parents? I mean I am a pretty rebellious person myself..I could rebel by drinking,fighting-arguing with them or refusing to do things they tell me to do but I'd never sc**w a person of a gender I'm not attracted to!!! In fact I wouldn't even do that do gain their approval!

Thats Just What I was thinking!
rockets....
....we call them rockets....american smarties are basically a pixie stick in solid form...so remember all those times you basically ate a tube of sugar, now imagine snorting that....the only people who do that are kids who don't know someone who can sell them pot....
Maybe they are just fake!
I can't believe all the people who are criticizing Dr Phil over this. This website has written its own article trashing fake bisexuals and that was fine but a straight guy does it (I've never seen the show but I assume he's straight, is he?) and suddenly his The Great Oppressor crushing the spirits of young, impressionable "confused" teens!!
I think its time we admit that there is a difference between a kid working out their sexuality (and identity) and fake bisexuals. Who do exist. Come on! We've all met them!
Yeah, but this is about
I'm sorry, no. If anyone's
