News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Denise Richards and other stars that are not lesbians

June might be Pride Month – a time where gays and lesbians everywhere pop out of doorways, alleyways, radiators and even closets to celebrate their gayness – but some celebrities, however, have instead decided to celebrate the declaration (or reaffirmation) of their heterosexuality. Retracting previous declarations of queerness isn't new (see, for example Keeley Hawes), and some of the following celebrities are happy to carry on that fine tradition.

1. Jenna Jameson is "totally hetero."

Due to an increased sense of political awareness, lesbians will not hesitate to intellectualize things that were never meant to be critically analyzed, such as porn. Porn is intended to bypass the area of the brain that is used for things like crunching numbers or discussing semiotics and is instead supposed to trigger the following reflexes: making your crotch tingle and eliciting the uncontrollable desire to hump something (or someone). However, porn is a sticky subject with some lesbians (and not in the literal sense).

Example:

College Me: Hey! Playboy is coming to our school to take naked pictures of our classmates! Ha ha ha!
Former College Roommate: Playboy coming to film at our school is disgusting. Porn is exploitative and hurts all women! It hurts you. It hurts me. In fact, I'm deeply hurt by your comment. I think you need to apologize to me.
College Me: Um, boobies?
Former College Roommate: [gives College Me the lesbian look of death] YOU DON'T GET IT! [Former College Roommate then launches into a soliloquy of why porn sucks and why College Me is a terrible unenlightened person.]
College Me: [Cowering] Don't hurt me! I promise never to make light of porn ever again! It is serious stuff deserving the utmost disdain!
Former College Roommate: Good. You are dismissed.

Well some promises were meant to be broken. (And this exchange is further proof that torture does not elicit honest confessions. Are you listening, Dick Cheney?)

When one hears the phrase "porn star" the name that most likely comes to mind is Jenna Jameson. Jameson has become a household name, even among those who have never seen any of her films. A few weeks ago, Jenna announced that she is not a lesbian and is in fact "totally hetero."

I think one of the big misconceptions everyone – even my friends – have of me is that I'm gay, but I am really not. I'm totally hetero.
Totally hetero? That's news. Take this excerpt from this article in Rolling Stone, for example:
Off-screen, she puts the number of women that she's slept with at 100, and men at 30. "I'm definitely bisexual, and there have been times in my life that I've been so bisexual it's sick," she says. "I love girls. I'll never not look at a girl and think, 'How do you think she tastes?'"

Totally hetero?

Or the following excerpt from this article in Paper magazine:

[S]he and her girlfriend Nikki Tyler, with whom she was living at the time, agreed to do a soft-core girl-on-girl film together. "Girl-on-girl was easy and natural. Then they offered me lots of money to do boy-girl." Jenna's first experience with straight porn was anything but hot. "The thing that turned me off was that he sweat on me. At the time, I was mostly gay. Women don't sweat on you. That grossed me out."

Totally hetero?

Maybe I'm just slow, but going on record saying that man sweat is icky and that you always wonder how a girl tastes may be the reason why this "misconception" exists.

Now, I do not personally know of any lesbians who are upset that Jenna Jameson has publicly declared her heterosexuality, but perhaps the 100 plus women that she bedded off-screen are scratching their heads in confusion.

2. Carly Simon announces that she is not gay.

Just last month Carly Simon told the Bay Area Reporter that she didn't think of herself as "not gay" and in fact, strongly implied that she has had same sex experiences.

Bay Area Reporter:I'm wondering if Cyndi called you and asked you to be a part of the True Colors tour, might you get involved?
Carly Simon: Well, the part that I could be involved in is the gay and lesbian part. The part that would be hard for me is to commit to a tour because I'm not very comfortable being on stage. But the part that would be easiest for me would be singing on behalf of all of us. I don't consider myself to be not gay.
BAR:Wow! Well, it's great to have you as part of the family.
Carly Simon: Thank you! I mean, I've enlarged all of my possibilities. There are a lot of extremely personal stories to tell about that, but we won't go into that right now. Let's just say that it just depends upon who I'm with.

Many wondered what these "extremely personal stories" were. How had she "enlarged all of [her] possibilities"?

Then, just a few days ago she denied those previously self-perpetuated rumors on the Howard Stern Show.

Have I made love to a woman? No. Now, I have been 'come on' to, but I was too uptight. But I wish that I had. I think that I'm too old for that (now). I have a fantastic boyfriend now who's almost a woman.

Too old? Oh, come on, Carly. Age ain't nothing but a number.

Let's look at some of the lyrics from Carly Simon's most recognizable song, "You're So Vain," which is the anthem of all women who have dated narcissistic jerks.

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht / Your hat strategically dipped below one eye / Your scarf it was apricot / You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte / And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner / They'd be your partner, and... / You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you / You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you / Don't you? Don't You?

Does anyone else get lesbianish vibes from these lyrics? First, every lesbian has an ex that fits the profile. Second, who doesn't know of a lesbian with a vast collection of hats that she parades around in public like 80's rappers paraded around their gold chains? And third, take note of the use of the word "partner," which is non-gender specific.

Hat dipped below one eye? Cockiness? All the girls dreamed to be her partner? Who does that remind you of?

OK, that song was written in 1972 and was therefore not written about a certain Eva Torres who mysteriously disappeared from The L Word without a trace, but the jury is still out on Carly.

3. Denise Richards could "never do that!"

Denise Richards never declared herself to be queer, but she sure had a steamy scene with Neve Campbell in Wild Things, so I am going to throw her into the mix for my own prurient interest.

Just a couple of weeks ago, she announced, "No, I'd never do that - I love men!"

"That" is, of course, being a lesbian – you know, "those people."

Then she continued, "I admit I have a weakness for guys that have dark hair and are passionate in bed, what is wrong with that?"

Doth the lady protest too much? As much as I would like to start rumors for fun, let's be real. Anyone who has a chance to make out with Neve Campbell in a swimming pool...

...but then voluntarily goes for this...

...is probably not a lesbian.

Denise, darling. I hereby pronounce you 100% heterosexual. But Happy Pride anyway!

    Jenna is full of it

Jenna is saying this nonsense because she is head over heels in love with that meathead Tito Ortiz. That's all fine and good, but Jenna had several relationships off screen with women...SEVERAL! That desire that she had for women isn't going to go away, although she can suppress it.

Denise Richards is insane, so I am glad she's straight.

    Carly Simon-I don't care.

    bernie.'s picture

    Haha

Haha I loved the bit about Denise Richards. So true, so true :P

    Tina's picture

    Jenna is bi. FACT.

Although it doesn't disappointment me that Jenna "claims" she's straight, I highly doubt she's not into girls. I watched a show about her a while ago and she said that her first relationship with a woman was the best relationship she's ever been in. Maybe what she meant was that she's happy in the relationship that she's in right now which happens to be with a man.

As for Denise, I'm GLAD she's not gay. Let's just say that she's not a real "winner" in my book.

    Rachel19's picture

    I have Jenna´s

I have Jenna´s biography... If she says she is total hetero than her book is complete and utter bullshyte.

    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    I also have Jenna's book

so it is disappointing that she is saying the mess she is saying now. Oh well.
    Sheena's picture

I have no problem with ...

Denise Richards announcing her heterosexuality.  She can stay on that side of the fence and shout it to the world for all I care but, if Neve Campbell came out and said "No, I'd never do that!"  then my feelings would be hurt.

Funny. Wikipedia still has her listed as bi.

    Anywho.

Big loss to the LGBT community, I'm sure.

she works hard for the money

I have difficulty believing that Jenna Jameson's comments are the result of her new love life.  After all, the willingness to be with a man is an integral part of bisexuality.

People tend to forget, either because she's such a looming presence in the porn industry or because she's had so much work done (and not entirely to her benefit), that Jenna Jameson is 34.  Not old, but the end of the rope (or pole?) for a porn star / stripper.  I think she's desperate to maintain her appeal among her base.  And, let's be frank, straight men might not want to buy the movies of a woman who has openly carried out love affairs with other women.  It ruins the cable guy fantasy.

And if you look again at the comment, it's the idea of being thought of as gay that seems to bother her.  What may have once been a source great pride and pleasure in her youth, now seems to be something to sweep back into the closet as she grows older and into a less hot commodity within her industry.

    sexyseed's picture

    men love lesbians

I perform am in a band, and often wear skimpy outfits, and as soon as I step off stage the men swarm, and the first thing I tell all of them is that I am a lesbian. This tends to make them try even harder. They seem to find some sort of challenge in it. I used to just say I was in a relationship, but that didn't work, so I thought well if they knew that I totally wasn't interested maybe they would leave me alone. Turns out, "who'd a thunk?", straight men love lesbians. Remember it's their fantasty. So the idea that Jenna might be bi I would think would sell more videos. These men often think I'll let them participate in sex with me and my girlfriend. They don't care that I am in a committed relationship. The thought of lesbian sex is hot to them. Men buying porn are not thinking about if they could ever have a serious relationship with Jenna. They want to fulfill sexual fantasies. I'm sorry I don't see how saying I'm totally hetero helps her porn career at all. The cable guy walking in on two girls having sex and getiing to join in is a much hotter scenario.
    jerseygyrl1983's picture

    Clearly, men don't

Clearly, men don't fantasize about having relationships with porn stars and I never suggested that.

You're right; the comment she made is, ultimately, not helpful in any way. And we could all debate until we're red in the face about what she may have meant, but we'll probably never know. And, in lieu of other issues, it doesn't matter.

    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    Good post jerseygyrl

I guess I see what you are saying. But that book of hers didn't come out all that long ago, and she stated in the book how she was more into women than men. She was also married before she hooked up with Tito, and still carried on a relationship (not just sex either, an actual relationship) with a former Penthouse Pet. It could be in her old age (lol!), she wants the normalcy and comfort that heterosexuality brings. This is going to sound awful, but women like Jenna is why it's dangerous to involve yourself with a bi-sexual woman if you are a lesbian.
    jerseygyrl1983's picture

    Yeah, I do remember her

Yeah, I do remember her saying all those things.  I didn't read the book, but I do remember the E! True Hollywood Story (yes, I actually watched that series) she did to promote it...  I hope you didn't buy it.

Anyway, if queer women need a role model in the porn industry (I realize how oxymoronic that sounds, but I do support the presence of women in every aspect of making erotica), Nina Hartley is a far better choice.

Great photo of Stacey Dash, by the way!

    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    Stacey is sexy beyond

Stacey is sexy beyond belief. Nina Hartley is a little too old school for me. Jenna is no role model of mine, but I found her to be refreshingly unapologetic when it came to her porn fame. There are several genuine bisexual female porn stars but Jenna is the most well known. We shall see if and when she breaks up with Tito (who I can't stand, but that's only cuz I love Chuck Liddell!) if she changes her tune.
    Tina's picture

    Unfortunately...

This is why bi women have an unfair stereotype of not being trustworthy. If she's saying she's straight because it makes her feel safe, that's unfortunate.

    jackedup77's picture

    ouch

Are porn stars the voice of bisexuality these days?

    I hope not.

Anything she says is overshadowed by the fact that she's a porn star; And IMHO, not a valid representation of any group.

    Tina's picture

    NO.

I didn't say that Jenna represents all bisexuals. She's one bisexual who happens to be famous. I'm just saying that some people (mostly straight guys) think of bisexuals as bi in the sheets but straight on the streets if you will. Jenna doesn't help this stereotype. Yeah, this whole fantasy pleases the guy but what about the opposite side of the spectrum? What about the ladies who want a relationship but get turned down because the girl only dates men?

And like I said, Jenna isn't the voice of bisexuality. But what other mainstream celebrity is?

[EDIT]I apologize. I just thought of another mainstream celebrity that gives bisexuals a bad name: Tila Tequila.

    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    Like it or not

It is a valid representation of part of the bisexual group. Just because they happen to have sex on camera doesn't devalidate their opinion on things. There are hundreds upon hundreds of female porn stars or adult models who are genuinely bisexual. Most girl/girl porn is filmed for the male fantasy, but several of those stars date women off screen. I am not gonna list them all because it seems pointless.
    jackedup77's picture

    I don't know about that

Just like you don't trust bisexuals,  I don't really trust anyone who's getting paid to have sex.

A lot of these women create a personal persona to get fans to buy their stuff.  They'll give an interview telling about an all girl threesome they just had before they came to work; when nothing of the sort ever happened.

There are also hundreds upon hundreds of female porn stars who are 'gay for pay'.  And they make everyone think they love women when they don't.  I'd go so far to say that most of the women in porn are 'gay for pay'.

There are a lot of female porn stars who only do scenes with other women.  People would think that's because they love women.  When really, they have a boyfriend/husband who won't let them perform with men (or the woman doesn't want to do men out of respect for her relationship). To them, having sex with women is harmless because they really don't like women.

I watch porn, a lot of porn, and I've become a bit cynical about the art and the artists.  I don't think anything porn stars say or do is based in reality.  I don't think porn stars have a healthy outlook on sex or life in general. So I don't think their opinions are valid.

In response to: "This is going to sound awful, but women like Jenna is why it's dangerous to involve yourself with a bi-sexual woman if you are a lesbian."

I'd say no, women like Jenna show why it's dangerous to involve yourself with a porn star.

    7OF9's picture

    LMAO!!!!

"I watch porn, a lot of porn..." gee, how do you you feel about porn, jackedup77?
    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    Yeah

I also watch a lot of porn and you aren't saying anything that I didn't already know. Yes, there are several women who are gay for pay...a lot of the Vivid girls would fall into that category. But then are those who do date women off screen (Jenna Haze comes to mind, among others). Porn stars are no different than actors, it's just their craft involves fucking...and I don't trust much of anything that comes out of actress' mouths, either.

Who really cares what a porn star  (not that there's anything wrong with being a porn star. I'm a big fan.) or Carly frickin' Simon have to say about anything?? They are both kind of notoriously bat-sh*t crazy, anyway. (And like I wanna think about Carly getting it on with some chick in '73 or something. Yikes.)

If Jenna is straight, how come she only "worked with women" for

If Jenna Jameson is straight, how come she only "worked with women" onscreen for years, despite the fact that women in porn get paid less to work with women than men?

Then again, I always throught it strange that she seemed to have much better taste in women than men (Jenny McCarthy, Nikki Tyler, Charlize Theron, Josie Moran), but the guys she officially dated were so......yuck (Marilyn Manson, Tito, her ugly straight husband Jay Grdina).

Re the comment about Jenna's behavior being a reason for lesbians to not get involved with bi women, judging all of us by Jenna Jameson, is like judging straight women by Pamela Anderson

    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    I made the comment

and I stand by it. We can't sit up here and act like bi-sexual women don't do what Jenna is currently doing. I am not judging all bi women by what Jenna Jameson, the porn star is doing, but merely of what Jenna Jameson, the now "totally hetero" person is doing. It's a very real risk that lesbians take by getting involved with women like this. Proceed with caution, I always say.

    edit: Jenna date Josie Maran?

    brackishtea's picture

    *bangs head on desk*

    *bleeds*

We can beat this issue to death but the point is she has a right/choice to NOT date a "bi" woman who seems to be in denial or on the fence. Please, this is not about every bi woman who walks on the planet, nor she judges women as Jenna F-ing Jameson as a reference, that would be a disservice. Anyway, I throw caution to the wind!!! Kidding, but yea she's stickin' to it, and there ain't nothing to it! (Seriously it's Jenna Jameson lol)

    Amy M's picture

    Jenna and Josie

Jenna and Josie Moran both say they slept with each other.

And what about the risk lesbians take dating lesbians who dump them for other women? Or for the fact that a fair number of women declare themselves lesbians and then turn out not to be years later. Or the fact that if lesbians refuse to date any bi women on the entire planet no matter how attractive/interesting/ intelligent/whatever we are, we're forced to date men so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Great comment. Often, the only way to get lesbians to date us is to lie and say we're lesbians and not bi's, and I've never been okay with that as an option. And of course, we still get accused of preferring men, even though they are the only ones who will date bi's. Who woulda thought that straight men would be more open minded than many lesbian women?

    babyface30's picture

    HEY!!! Kima

Just because Jenna is a lying hypocrite doesn't mean decent bisexual women like me deny our sexuality and forget we ever liked women-that's an unfair extremely STEREOTYPICAL post.

I could care less if Denise is hetro I always thought she was anyway.I would have had Charlie (when he was younger) or Neve.

I do find it annoying when straight celeb's say their bi when their not then take the statement back it just makes us look like we liars who can't make up our minds.Ladies if your straight say your straight and if your bi fine say your bi but please don't say it for publicity your just hurting the image of genuine bisexual women.

    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    Stereotypes exist for a reason

Because sometimes the shoe does fit. I am not saying don't date a bisexual girl (I would prefer not to), just think very carefully about what you are getting into when you do.
    Tina's picture

    Exactly.

"I do find it annoying when straight celeb's say their bi when their not then take the statement back it just makes us look like we liars who can't make up our minds.Ladies if your straight say your straight and if your bi fine say your bi but please don't say it for publicity your just hurting the image of genuine bisexual women."

EXACTLY. Disagree if you want but celebrities are very influential. There are not a lot of famous mainstream bisexuals but when you think of the more famous ones (Tila and Jenna come to mind), it's easy to see why bisexuals have a bad rep. People are going to look at these girls and think negative things about bi women in general. It sucks that the bisexual community is represented in the media by these two women but this is why I find it completely understandable for some lesbians to be a bit cautious when it comes to bisexuals. Just my two cents.

    brackishtea's picture

It's not about you you you you YOUUU or is it?

This brings up an interesting point: it's not about me, you, or my chucks, it's an unpopular opinion.

If you a bisexual woman are not like or similar to Jenna Jameson, then you are fine, I don't think she is talking about you. Life would and is better off thinking that if your name or your likeness or identity is not the topic, then don't worry about it.

This is regarding to Kima's comment, what I read was "This is going to sound awful, but women like Jenna is why it's dangerous to involve yourself with a bi-sexual woman if you are a lesbian". I saw Like Jenna, are any of you lovely bi women in this website like Jenna? No? Well you have nothing to worry about! I would throw caution to the wind when I "approach" you on these forums.

Denise will come around....oh she will, her and Natalie Portman....I'll be waiting.

    jackedup77's picture

    You didn't see this coming?

Of course this was going to turn into a
"don't trust bisexuals" vs. "don't judge bisexuals" thread.

Whenever someone brings up women flip flopping about their sexuality, someone has to make a comment about bisexuals.  Then all the bisexuals have to go on defense.

    BTW, the lesbian started it....
    brackishtea's picture

I saw it a mile away!!!!

Yea I figured a lesbian would start it and then all the bisexual and bisexual-friendly lesbians (lol) will come in to their defense. It's silly really, I personally have nothing against bisexuals, just the ones or anyone for that fact that is in some form of denial.

Anyway how are you doing these days?

    jackedup77's picture

    How am I doing

I feel like grade A shit.

    How YOU doin'?

    babyface30's picture

I could be a secret porn star lol

I just don't think it's a good idea to call any bisexual even a porn star it's not helpful and just encourages biphobia. And there are so many stereotypes about lesbians that sometimes might be true but you shouldn't encourage them as they get applied to all.

As for Denise if she's straight let her stay straight i'm not gonna waste my time wishing some straight girl was bi,i'll go for the genuine bisexual and lesbian women thanks lol.

    Dr. Gloria Nathan's picture

    Jessica Biel is another one

She made some statement declaring to anybody who would listen to her that she's not a lesbian. Of course, her behavior in the past has suggested Jessica is a big ol liar.

Didn't Queen Latifah proudly say in VIBE magazine a few years back, that she is, and I quote "not a dyke!" SMH.

    babyface30's picture

    Erm

Jessica is dating Justin Timberlake so I doubt she's a lesbian,bi possibly but definitely not a lesbian.

Queen Latifah hasn't come out so it's all speculation about her sexuality-I mean I totally think she is a lesbian but we don't know for sure.

    Amy M's picture

    Jenna Jameson's opinion on JustinTimberlake

From one of the articles quoted above, Jenna Jameson's opinion on Justin Timberlake:

"I'll settle for Justin [Timberlake]. Isn't he hot? Every man I know loves to hate him. He's talented and cute and has a good personality. So they all say, 'Oh he's gay.' Of course, Justin [Sterling] says that about every guy I like."

Unlike the rest of us, when Jenna lets it be known that she would be willing to take some cute famous person home, it's not unheard of for them to take her up on the offer. "I doubt Justin will respond," she says. But here comes the shout out: "He needs to have me in a video. It would prove he's completely heterosexual. I'd even do it for free. Because, you know, I'm a giver."
