Danica Patrick takes a shower for a Super Bowl commercial

Danica Patrick. In a shower. With a hot blonde.

Coming out of your fantasies to your television set this Super Bowl Sunday. Yes, really.

The fetching race car champ who has been smoking boys on the racetrack will be steaming up the shower with a girl in a GoDaddy.com commercial.

Yes, I know we've been critical of Danica Patrick's appearances in some GoDaddy ads in the past, but the words "Danica Patrick. In a shower. With a hot blonde." have spawned certain thoughts, such as "homina homina homina" and "OMFG! SHOW ME NOW!!!" that have completely eviscerated my ability to make any sort of critical commentary on the matter.

And so I won't take up any more of your time. Let's just cut to commercial break.

The premise of this ad is that, once you buy a domain name at GoDaddy.com, you can make anything happen online, including getting Danica Patrick and another woman to shower together on your computer screen.

Sure, it sounds creepy, and yes, the people orchestrating the shower scene is a group of three young men, which makes the premise sound even creepier, but as I said earlier, I'm on "critical commentary break" today.

OK, perhaps the final scene was only suggestive of girl on girl playtime in the shower, but according to GoDaddy's site, a "Too Hot for TV Internet-Only" version is expected to be posted at GoDaddy's site at kickoff.

I am guessing that the "internet only" version will continue where the television version left off, and we might get to see some more of Danica Patrick and "Ms. Schmidt" in the shower.

    hmmm...

my gut reaction(and dont get me wrong..i like sexy women, but)..she needs to focus more on winning her car races than her marketing. It is hard enough for her to be taken seriously and to just keep on throwing fuel on the fire by continuing to market herself like this..just...sad.

    Go Daddy...

Is one of her sponsors! They help PAY for the race cars so that she CAN race. I happen to root for her in every race that I have seen her in. A very hot young lady!
    A P's picture

    not just one of her

not just one of her sponsors. Since Go Daddy became a sponsor of Danica's they have now also become a sponsor of her Team and a LOT of different aspect of the Indy Car series

Because of Danica they have become a huge sponors so Dancia definently needs to keep up these promos

    gato's picture

ok..you are not getting my point..

Just because they are her sponsor does NOT mean she has to get naked in their commercials. If she would win more races..she would have more sponsors knocking on her door. You don't see Jimmie Johnson or Dale Earnhardt Jr..getting naked in a shower for Penzoil. It is not helping society in taking female athletes and womens sports seriously if the athletes are continuously objectified. It is possible to be taken seriously and sexy without being sex object.

Why did I see this coming!!

Its so sad to say that unfortunately, I'm surprised when these strong, well-accomplished beautiful women DO NOT end up sending out the message that the only way to be sexy or beautiful is to take your clothes off and pose nude or semi-nude for the boy pubs!

Evolve ladies!! Sorry Grace, its hard to see past the negative messages, no matter how many women they throw in the shower with her...seriously!

    nods

yes i see your point. but today i couldn't bring myself to care enough to be critical. little nagging thoughts like, "um, the women on the screen are not autonomous and are being controlled by those dorky dudes" and "why is this accomplished woman marketing herself in this manner?" were sifting in and out of my head - not because i was honestly thinking those thoughts, but because i knew i was supposed to be thinking those thoughts. but those thoughts simply weren't as loud and insistent (or as true for that matter) as "LIKE OMG LIKE MAKE OUT ALREADY!!! Why'd you cut to black? Hello? I wanna see them make out!!!"

so i could either be "good" but phony or "bad" but honest. i chose the latter. the only explanation i have is that some days you're a good lesbian, and some days you just want to scream "LOLOLOL BOOBIES!!!!" today just happened to be a "bad lesbian" day. actually, i'm a bad lesbian most days, but usually i can muster up something thoughtful without being dishonest. today i just wanted to hop up and down and see naked girls in the shower without feeling guilty.

So, uh, HAPPY BAD LESBIAN FRIDAY!

    Marketing/Racing

Marketing and racing go hand in hand. As a marketing employee of an IndyCar team I know that you can't have one without the other, especially in today's economic world.

If she doesn't market herself or her team, she doesnt get the money to race the #7 motorola car in the IndyCar Series. She can't just focus on winning races and NOT on her sponsors. They are the reason she is here.

Yes, the ads are racy (no pun intended) but GoDaddy is marketing to men. I think people THINK too much about GoDaddy ads - how the heck else do you market domain names? And women aren't usually the ones purchasing them.

Now if she would focus more of her time with Motorola and not GoDaddy, we could probably see a less provocative side of Danica. She likes being a girl though and apparently Motorola hasn't given her much opportunity to do otherwise.

    I have to say -

I didn't see anything SOOO bad with the extended version on the web... if by having Danica and the blonde in towels on the bed in front of a laptop they consider this to be TOO HOT FOR TV... that's insane... we've seen worse on network tv lately.

However, this commercial did its job... because after seeing it... i went to godaddy.com to view the uncut version and then stayed to poke around the site.  Marketing complete.  :)

Although I agree with the majority that say this is really a cheap way to get advertising.  Because if it was a guy... they would have never been in the shower.

    So, Grace, it's ok for

So, Grace, it's ok for Patrick to sexualize herself when you personally find the ad titillating, but no so much when you don't enjoy the imagery? I'd rather see Patrick's skill on the racetrack than in a shower.

"Nature delights in diversity. Why don't humans?"

    Grace Chu's picture

she seems to be having fun

she seems to be having fun with her sexy image. and looking at the ad again, the overall tone is pretty goofy. anyway, what is worse, admitting that one finds the ad to be titillating (which was her intent imho)... or telling danica patrick that she should not exercise her free will in appearing in such ads? anyway, i realize that the sexualization of women in advertising is a touchy subject, and women themselves don't always agree on this subject. the subject is complicated even more when you have lesbians discussing it, because guess what... lesbians are sexually attracted to women, so we're constantly looking at these images and experiencing conflicting messages, like "hey that's hot" and then "wait... should i have said that? should i feel guilty?" and then "how does this affect attitudes towards women in general?" and then "whoa. but that's hot!" and then "hm, i better not admit that. people will think less of me," and then "but... hot!"

today, "whoa, that's hot" won out. maybe monday the angel that fell asleep on my shoulder will have awakened and smacked me across the face, but not today! :)

    Happy Bad Lesbian Friday

    Happy Bad Lesbian Friday indeed!

They say you need to pray if you want to go to heaven, but they don't tell you what to say when your whole life has gone to hell.

    Nothing's picture

    I think it's wonderful

that a woman can be beautiful and sexy and play a sport that has always been dominated by men.  In the 80s women had to prove they could play a man's game, so they dressed in severe suits, wore their collars up to their chins, and passed on anything that might smack of femininity.  We've come a long way baby.  The fact that this beautiful woman has a sponsor that's paying her a lot of money, just the way all the men do, and she isn't afraid to be sexy, is to her credit.  You go girl.  Oh, and by the way Danica, you are so hot!
    Tea&Toast's picture

    my two pence

I watched the ad and knew I should of been thinking about "how it protrays women in a bad way" etc, but then I thought, "I really don't care cos she's hot and in a shower, and oh look, there's another hot women in the shower too! yay!" I personally think it's not such a bad thing anyway. Women in sport usually get stereotyped as always being butch, masculine and definately not sexy. Whenever I tell people I play basketball and football, they don't believe me cos I'm not butch and quite girly. So the fact that Danika is hot, and an awseome sports star is great cos it goes against that stereotype and shows the ignorant people of the world that women who play sports can be sexy and feminine too. Plus, like I said, she's hot. So er, yeah :) *goes to re-watch advert*

Nuthin Wrong In Expressing Lesbian Badness

Grace Chu I'm with you all the way girl! Rock on to Lesbian Badness. You're not the only one who feels ya. Danica = hot womyn + shower= hotness.

If my hot race car  Danica doesn't mind, I don't mind. Besides who says she didn't enjoy doing the shower scene with another womyn? Hmmm?

I'm not feeling the promo pic of her in the yellow car though.

    This whole commercial is

This whole commercial is lost on me, because as much as I wish I thought Danica Patrick is good looking, I just don't see it. There's just something that makes her icky. Oh well. Go Daddy isn't exactly known for it's classy commercials.

    WorldHarmony's picture

Nope, I can't go along with

Nope, I can't go along with the "marketing is part of racing" view to excuse the use of Danica Patrick as a sex object.  This goes much deeper than that.  GoDaddy consistently treats women as brainless sex objects. Just because racing is a male-oriented sport doesn't mean that sponsors should belittle female drivers.

Here's GoDaddy's commercial featuring Dale Earnhardt Jr. .  He's fully dressed in his racing gear and in a businesslike manner advertises GoDaddy's features, connecting them to the strength and speed required of a skilled racer.

Here's a GoDaddy commercial featuring our Danica Patrick.  No effort is made to connect her racing skills to the features of GoDaddy. Instead, we are treated to a view of her unzipping a skintight bodysuit in order to tease a roomful of people with the possibility of viewing her exposed breasts. And no, it doesn't excuse anything that they have a few women in the crowd of ogglers.

Here's a GoDaddy commercial featuring a woman whose tanktop threatens to pop off and expose her ample breasts. Sound familiar? Again, no connection is made between her "skills" (she's portrayed as a bimbo) and GoDaddy's features.

All right, there actually is an ad with Patrick where she makes a connection between her skills as a racer and the features of GoDaddy.  How does this compare to Earnhardt's ad?   All I have to say is thank God it was banned.

Sponsorship in the world of NASCAR and car racing in general is a fascinating topic (well, maybe you have to be a sociologist like me to feel that way).  But it's important to understand that the loyalty of fans towards car race sponsors is extreme, and the influence that such ads have on car race fans is significant.  And since most car race enthusiasts are male, do you really think the distinctive portrayal of women as sex objects vs. the portrayal of men as strong, skilled racers is lost upon these guys? I do not.

Patrick is a RACER and should be respected as such, but yes, it is her right to allow herself to be portrayed as a sex object.  I'm just sorry that she chose to go that route.

    Your right

The full version makes more sense and is a better commercial but you can see why they just cut it off leaving the men's imagination to take over.....typical

    Full ad screenshots

Danica Patrick and Ms. Schmidt, upon realizing that they are being puppeteered by a lame version of Michael Sera and his two lamer buddies, turn the tables on them. Danica and the blonde pop out of the computer screen, and the three stooges pop into Danica Patrick's computer screen. Danica and the blonde make the boys slap each other and spray each other with a fire extinguisher. Final line spoken by Danica: "Sorry boys. With my domain name and website from GoDaddy.com, we're in control!"

    All's well that ends well.;)

    nice

great post (and rebuttal!), grace. honestly, not that offensive. danica is a super talented driver, and godaddy is a huge sponsor. sure, the fact that she's gorgeous helps her, but why shouldnt it? the full ad is pretty funny, and even the short version is only mildly offensive. it's the super bowl, after all. consider the demographic. if godaddy wanted to air its ads on sunday nights on shotime, theyd make the three boys hot college girls. but the super bowl? consider the audience. danica is hot, and this ad, while admittedly short of creative and brilliant, is still pretty amusing.
