Celia's lesbian storyline is dead in the water on "Weeds"

Warning: Possible spoilers ahead!

The torrid affair between Celia and Raylene on Weeds, like all things on that show, has gone to pot. I had predicted that Celia, whose addictive personality is rivaled only by Pete Doherty's, would become addicted to strap-on sex, since she never stops talking about it in Episode 11. Unfortunately — or fortunately for our delicate eyes — the lesbian storyline looks like it is about as dead as Pilar.

In the season finale, Celia, after tying Doug up in a storage unit, waxes poetic about kissing ladies but then declares, "Oh, who am I kidding. I need dick."

However, where there is no overt lesbian storyline, there is always Plan B: Subtext!

The real story here is Celia's obsession with Nancy. Celia, despite her outward disdain for Nancy, has always followed Nancy around like a puppy. Over the course of five seasons, Celia has attempted to wriggle into Nancy's circle but was never allowed to eat with the cool kids in the high school lunchroom.

In Episode 12 of Season 5, Celia finally decides to take matters into her own hands and "out-Nancy Nancy," even going so far as to dye her hair brown and start, as her daughter Isabelle puts it, "dressing like a prostitute."

And she didn't even have to use her stash of You're Pretty cosmetics to do it.

In the season finale, while Nancy is occupied with the thorny task of getting Guillermo to assassinate megabitch Pilar, Celia assembles Nancy's old pot dealing team — Doug, Dean and Sanjay — and formally enters into the entreprenurial world of drug dealing. Celia's transformation into Nancy has become complete.

So who else thinks that Celia has it bad for Nancy? Let's see a show of hands.

    I don't know, I think Celia

I don't know, I think Celia just thinks

that Nancy is awesome, I don't think

she wants to sleep with her. Besides,

Nancy is too cool for Celia.

Weeds is not good with the gays

Not that I'm at all surprised, but I think the way they handled the "lesbian storyline" --which was neither lesbian nor a real storyline--was pathetic. Why even go there if they weren't going to follow through in some way? So lame. All the gay characters/storylines on this show have been completely stereotypical and desexualizing. Sanjay was saddled with a baby immediately after coming out and has never had an on-screen boyfriend. They obviously made the DEA agent gay just so the death of his partner would have a bigger impact--then they killed off both of them. Isabelle is a good character, but she's never had a girlfriend. Her being gay is talked about but has never played into the story at all. Then they spend a whole episode talking about strap-on sex only to have it go nowhere and show nothing of the relationship. For a show that wants to be edgy, or whatever, it certainly doesn't seem to be comfortable with the gay.

    I'm disappointed to know

I'm disappointed to know better than the writers of the show that Celia doesn't, in fact, "need that". She's been attracted to girls ever since the beginning of the show, that's SO obvious!

    Missed chance...with Isabelle.

The Celia plotline was a waste.  What bugs me is that they have a lesbian character on the show in Isabelle.  They introduce a possible love interest for her (the girl that sings the Huskeroo jingle).  Then nothing.  That was sad to see.  Good last episode made up somewhat for weak season.

    Actually...

The whole theme of the final episode is men being weaker than women.  Nancy's husband is clearly only a puppet in master Pilar's plans to govern the city; Celia has gained so much power and along with it comes a female lover rather than male.  Andy runs out on Audra in a moment of need.  The show is so driven by its plot that honestly the fact that they haven't "Represented" lesbian and gay characters enough is simply NOT true.  This is a show that airs for around 5 hours of television each year, and they have had PLENTY of representation of LGBT characters.  So they aren't perfect? Guess what, the straight characters are far from "accurate" representations as well.  Also, think about the fact that you can't change your orientation.  Sure, you can go with a guy and kiss him but I bet at the end of the day if you're a lesbian you're gonna be saying "Who am I kidding, I need pussy!"  This is what brings about Celia's rampage.  While she may have had some sort of affection for Nancy, I believe its more of a need for a female role model in her life.  In the early seasons she wanted to be Nancy's friend so much, but Nancy kept too many secrets from her, and then ended up betraying her in the worst way.  In alot of ways, Celia simply wanted to be as powerful as Nancy.  Nancy takes what she wants when she wants it and Celia just isn't that strong, as mean as she is.

I loved this season of Weeds and I can't wait for next year.  Peace ladies.

    what a bummer

i was really into weeds first and second season, seriously the only reason why i rented the dvd's was because of isabelle, but seeing how she doesn't even get to have a gf in the whole damn show sucks now... sigh, i was hoping this edgy show would add some charm to it by giving the gay community a chance... no more weeds for me :(

    My favourite part...

of Celia becoming Nancy was her drinking the coffee drinks. That was priceless.

    Subtext Scmubtext I feel that

The writers never intended Celia to copntinue her lesbian thing, they will go on titllating us with Celia obssessing over Nancy until they work ut a way to connect them sexually if only temporarily. This seems to be the direction Celia has been going in ever since Nancy pretended they were lovers in order to save Celia from being executed a couple of years ago.

    Big Gay Weeds

While Celia is obviously a little crazed when it comes to Nancy, most of the characters on Weeds are the same way - I see Celia being more obsessed with success and power, and in her mind Nancy is the embodiment of that. Go figure.

Personally, I am incredibly glad the big-gay-Celia storyline only went so far as her describing having sex with Raylene, and never us having to see it, because there is not enough brain bleach in the world for me to erase that image.

As for Weeds and LGBT stuffs: Weeds is a show full of beautifully, tragically flawed characters that each week draws a line of good taste, and then spends its time desperately trying to beat that line to a bloodied pulp with small animals and babies. They handle us homos they way the handle everything else - with laughter, bemusement and lovingly bad taste.
